Another great show by James McMurtry and The Martial Law Review. McMurtry is the ultimate American Storyteller. His band also just happens to rock. Texas singer-songwriter BettySoo, frequently tours, performs, and shares stages as a collaborative partner and guest with James McMurtry. She is an incredible artist who tells personal and accessible stories through her music. If you plan to see a show at The Chapel, be sure to have dinner Curio which is connected to The Chapel. Service is excellent. The food is creative and reasonably priced. And if you eat at Curio, you will get early access to the show. Matt says plan to attend a show at The Chapel soon. My first time here at this venue as my drumming group was performing in the Zumbi Festival. Parking can be a hassle as I car pooled with a friend and we drive around and finally decided to park in a paid parking lot near Duggan's Mortuary. The venue is spacious with a small stage and upstairs behind the stage are a couple of dressing rooms, a bathroom, and an area for refreshments. Since our group was performing second, we got one of the dressing rooms so that was comfortable and the promoter provided snacks and drinks to all the performers. Lights onstage were bright and warm. There's a small bar in the back of the venue and everyone seemed to have a good time! And the bathrooms on the first floor are very clean and is attached to the restaurant next door called Curios. read more

I often think of The Chapel as Cosa Nostra. No, I'm not in the mafia, and no, The Chapel does not remind me of organized crime in any way, but it does feel like "our thing," the we in "our" originally being my brother and I because I saw a few shows here with him, but then "our thing" became my thing. So I guess I think of The Chapel as Cosa Mia. I had never seen a show here before I moved to the Mission, and I haven't seen once since I moved away from the Mission, so at the moment, The Chapel represents not only a sometimes magical musical venue but also a specific, important, and beloved part of my life. I believe I have seen four or five concerts here. When I saw my most recent one in November 2024, I still lived in the Mission, and I was excited to see Kate Nash. Lo and behold, when I arrived, I saw that Skating Polly was the opener. I love Skating Polly! And I had no idea they were touring, let alone that I already had tickets to their show. So I was mesmerized by Skating Polly's live antics and then hypnotized by Kate Nash's live antics. But those are only two of the many acts I've seen here. I used to think upstairs was the place to be, but you have to arrive very early to snag one of the very few upstairs seats. It is a nice view, and you're close to a bar, but I've had the best luck on the floor toward the very right and very front. They often cordon off a section up there to stack some of the bands' equipment, so it seems like an awkward place to stand, but it's really not. You're really close to the stage, and you can lean against the wall without worrying about people trying to get past you, because there's nowhere to go from there. One of the most beautiful things about living close to here was being able to eat on Valencia Street right before a show. No need to plan too far ahead, and it's always a quick walk to The Chapel. Even better, I've never even stepped foot in their restroom, because I lived a couple of blocks away. There's nothing quite like the feeling of using your own bathroom after being surrounded by a bunch of drunk people whom you know are going to foul up the closest public restroom before you use it. I'm definitely coming back, but it won't be the same without living nearby. Still, it's one of my favorite SF concert venues. The sound is pretty good, and the stage is raised enough--finally!--that it doesn't matter than there are tall people standing in front of you. Don't waste your time looking for parking--although it's not that bad. Just take either the 14-Mission or the 49 Van Ness/Mission, or take BART. It's about equidistant from the 16th Street and 24th Street BART stations, so pick your public-transit poison. read more

Here for the dB's!! Great dinner at Curio (Cobb Salad with fried chicken strips - excellent!). If you let them know you're here for a show, they get you setup with your show wristband while you're eating, so it's easy to just head in to show when the doors open. My first visit and a great time overall. I really enjoyed having a more intimate atmosphere when attending The Paper Kites concert. Since it was standing room only and given the limited space, I was perhaps 15 feet from the stage ( no need to be in the front row). I had a fairly clear view and the rest of crowd was behaving decently except perhaps the couple who figured they could jam their way through ( yes, we get that you're special) Other than that, no incidences which I appreciate. Definitely a place to check out. read more

A mid-sized performance venue that the SF Mission can be proud of as it hosts an impressive array of bands, diverse musical genres and crowned with a splendid lil' marquee sign bright enough to sway attention. located between 18th & 19th Street and on Valencia, just around the way from the 16th Bart Station and about a half mile walk from the 24th St Bart hub as there are tons of taquerias nearby + plenty of other types of food joints to grab a meal. finding a parking spot close by can be hit or miss so public transit's recommended. the last 3 shows i've seen here was an incredible mix and highlighted by the soulful R&B trio Thee Marloes from Indonesia, SoCal's dynamic synth/goth/electro-rockers Cold Cave and one of my all time favorite live performances in La Lom (Los Angeles League of Musicians). there's never been any sound issues that i've picked up and the sight lines from most every angle in the place allows good discernment of the elevated stage. SF's own Flamin' Groovies were here just a few years back and even that show was great with their loyal fans coming out in droves. whoever's booking the artists for them deserves a raise. read more

Visited the Chapel for a concert this past weekend, and I think this might be the most affordable music venue in SF. We watched an artist named Kate Nash, and there wasn't much of a line when we arrived so we got in really quick. Upon entering they had a couple of merch tables set up. They have a small bar downstairs and a bar upstairs. We ordered two topo Chico hard seltzers and the total was $13 something, which is usually the cost of one at most music venues. The concert/show itself was great. It wasn't super packed, so finding a spot was easy and we never felt squished inside. The music/sound system was great and the stage is so close that it makes for a very intimate setting. Overall, glad I can finally cross off the chapel off my venue list, and wouldn't hesitate to go to another show here. read more

The Chapel is one of those intimate music venues you have check out at least once. From the high 40-foot arched ceilings to the awesome acoustics and lighting, it truly made the show so worth driving up an hour for from South Bay. Of course, the artist we went to see (Cian Ducrot on 9/27/23) was phenomenal, and this place definitely elevated his performance even more! It's kind of fun and spooky to know that The Chapel was originally a mortuary in 1914, and has rumors of being haunted! Thank goodness we were there with hundreds of other people, but it still felt a little creepy knowing that spirits were potentially hanging out amongst us listening to Cian's incredible voice too... Just Google it and you'll find a lot of articles about ghost stories and strange occurrences at night. Big shout out to the 2 guys checking bags & IDs while we waited in line out front. They were about the nicest people we've ever encountered at a music venue. The girl who scanned our tickets on my phone was also super nice! Hopefully another artist or band we want to see will play here soon, because we definitely wanna come back! read more

The Chapel is a fantastic venue nestled in the Mission district located at Valencia between 18th and 19th. We came to watch Brume and enjoyed catching a bite at Curio ahead of the show, which is attached to the bar and the stage. The show was set for all ages. We were stoked to bring our son to catch a local band, which is such a great spot. Checking in was a little clunky since we came through from the restaurant, but everyone was quick to get us checked in and on our way into the venue towards the stage. The sound was great, and we made our way to the front and settled in for a great show. read more

The venue has an attached restaurant called Curios. Service was excellent there. The hand off to the show was disorganized. No one told us we had a window of time to be let in early to the music venue so they made us walk back outside to get in line even though we had a meal at the restaurant. The door guy didn't know what he was doing. Things seemed a bit confusing. Although the security was a lovely human and very warm. Once inside we made our way upstairs to find the limited seating. It took them awhile to get the video feed showing upstairs. Their seating options didn't make a lot of sense and the lay out couldn't figure out if they wanted to be standing room only or seated upstairs. Luckily the chapel ceilings and the sound system saved the moment. Most of the attendees were all music lovers of all ages, some dressed up or down. Very elective group. I will consider coming back. read more

I like the spot. The show was good. Real quaint inside and they got a good sound system. Their ADA accommodations though...not so great. It's a nice idea to put someone with limited mobility close to the restrooms. But if you're also placing someone with limited mobility directly in front of the stage, it's probably not going to be a good time for them. Or the people around them who will definitely trample that person trying to get a good close up of the performers & then think what that might lead to... 3 stars for now. read more

My Girl friend, best friend and I visited the Chapel on Valentine's Day for a concert. We decided at the door to upgrade to seats as opposed to standing and they charged us double for seats that didn't exist because they were sold out. We didn't make a big deal about it as we did end up finding a place to sit upstairs that would have otherwise been free if we hadn't upgraded. Instead we paid double. At the entrance as the employee at the door is putting the wristbands on. He puts a wristband on me and leaves both my GF and friend standing there with their wrist extended as he turns away to speak to an underage friend of his who he was trying to get in the club with out ID. My GF, tired of waiting asks him if we can have our wristbands and he then lets out a grunt of discontent for being interrupted and slaps the wristbands on my guests. Determined to have a good time regardless of the treatment, we continue and try to enjoy our evening. My GF and I have recently met and started dating and it being V Day and all, we were affectionate with one another and engaged in several kisses. At some point we got up and went to the restroom to use the facilities. As we were coming out a man grabs my GF by the wrist and writes a huge black X on her forearm totally against her will. We were both in shock and asked him what his problem was as she was trying to jerk her arm away. We then realized it was the same guy from the door with the wrist bands. He said we were offending people and that we were being cut off from drinking. I can understand the X if we had truly been being disruptive, but the correct way is to give the patron the choice to willingly sport the X or leave. Not grab someone and force it on them. We had only a couple of glasses of wine and the bartender was friendly and had no issue with us. This person proceeded to call others security guards as back up like we were some kind of menace. Not that we wanted to stay after this, of course we wanted to leave and never return but he deemed adequate to have us led out by security. It is needless to say we will never ever return to this establishment and will warn as many people possible especially the gay community about our horrendous experience. read more

There is a lot to like about the Chapel. It's an attractive and intimately sized room. The booking is eclectic. The staff is nice. It's well located (although parking sucks in the mission) so maybe take BAR, MUNI or UBER. All that said, I've been to two shows there in the last week and the sound for each of them pretty much sucked. In each case the mix was such, that one or two instruments dominated. It was really hard to hear the vocals. It was two different sound men, so perhaps the problem is in the system. There are two flying line arrays on each side and some lower fill monitors also on the side but not pointed towards the center. So maybe they need to figure out a center fill component. In any case, if left feeling like I got less than the full show, because I couldn't really hear the vocals and other elements of the band. read more

This place is a VIBE. The club is actually an old chapel, and the architecture is still in tact. There are places to sit down, which is really nice, and lots of bars to choose from so you are not sitting waiting for a while at any particular one. We went to the Chappell Roan night and it was fantastic. The music was great, and everyone got really into the theme. The drink prices weren't that bad as well. Pretty nice venue, they have PAs upstairs so you can hear the music very well. The bathrooms are close by just through the side door left of the stage and are easily accessible. What an absolutely fun place to see a concert! While we were having drinks at the Beauty Bar, Yolie screams, "We're going to a concert!" I'm like, Mmmmkay. Y: It's at the Chapel?? Me: Oh, that's just around the corner.... Kismit? I think so. We were pretty much hanging out in the Mission, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. But I had no idea who we were seeing....King Choosey? DJ Exile? What did I get myself into??? We walked in, great lobby with coat check. Small bar inside. Chairs set up audience style, high tables and chairs, and a balcony area. We set up camp audience right. One of the opening bands started and they were great! Latin music with beats to dance to. I wondered why no one was dancing because it was the kind of music that makes you want to! But we were joined by a great group of women. The next band was reggae, again what a great band! I'm sorry I can't remember the names because there was much drink involved. And then as I was watching them it happened...this girl walked in front of my view... M: Korina? K: OMG...WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? M: WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? K: I'M 23 NOW Boy time flies! She is a former student of mine, newspaper editor-in-chief to be exact. What a small world! She is finishing school at SFU. The reggae band played some really great music and of course, a small mosh pit started. I went in for fun, and was gently pushed at one point, all just fun! And then the headliner came out...well, come to find out King Choosey and I are related through friendship. At the end of the concert, we just bypassed the line that was waiting to speak to him, and obnoxiously just grabbed him to say hello. We also spoke with DJ Exile, and promised to see them at a party the following week. Yes, that's why we can walk up to him like a boss. The Chapel is great! The staff was rude, the space was way oversold and filled, and worst of all, the sound was ABYSMAL. They had multiple sound issues throughout the opening act, and the main act (Stars) sounded awful. I've seen them live twice before so I know it wasn't them. The vocals were muddy and too quiet, compared to the drums and bass which were at maximum volume and kept causing feedback. Don't often leave reviews, but man the acoustics in this place are seriously shot. I've seen several bands here that I've seen at other venues as well and the sound system here is noticeably bad. Usually not too picky about this stuff but their speakers suck. You would think the place would naturally have good acoustics with the vaulted ceiling too.
