This is my first time using Cheap Squad's services and they did an excellent job fixing my laptop screen. I've been using an older ASUS laptop for work, but eventually the screen stopped working all together. It still displayed if I plugged an AVI cable to a separate monitor, but that meant I couldn't travel with it. Since I knew it still functioned I decided to drop it off here to see if it was worth even it to get it repaired. After a quick convo with one of the techs here I was sold on the price point for the repair and it was actually quite a bit cheaper than I had expected. It took a few days, but I got a phone call from them once the repair was finished and it looked brand new! I've been using it for the past couple days now and so far it's working wonderfully. They took my computer, and called back within the next couple of days saying the problem was fixed and I should come into the store to retrieve it. For nearly 2.5 months after upgrading my PC with a new Mobo, GPU, CPU, RAM and SSD + 2TB HD (installed on my own except for the CPU)...it would constantly crash upon bootup and/or during normal use or gaming. So finally the decision was made to take it for a diagnosis and The Cheap Squad was my ending choice. The place where I bought the parts had decent prices however they would have charged for merely finding out the problem. Location was easy to find but parking kind of a pain due to carrying my massive tower from my car to the shop. After my workout I checked in with Jose, told him the problems I was aware of and took off. Few days later I was told the HD was bad and a Windows repair was in process and that I would get a call back. No more than 30 minutes later I got a call from "Gary" (estimated guess I had my headset on) who informed me the HD was indeed bad and a simple removal of it plus a fresh Windows install on the SSD should fix the crashing. I asked how much they would charge to fix it and was told the amount, but he reassured me I was capable of fixing it and would save money. So I got home and did exactly what was suggested and not a single crash whereas it would have crashed at least 4-6 times in 10 minutes. What led me to 5 Stars was the initial courtesy, the proven expertise having solved my problems, and the fact that I wasn't pressured nor asked if they should do the repair for me. It was an extremely easy fix for being such a troublesome issue and it didn't cost me a penny. For me that is great customer service and I will happily bring my business here for my upcoming tower upgrade and any future work I can't handle on my own. read more

Their 5 star review holds pretty true. I walked away very impressed with how helpful they were and decided to dust off my inactive yelp account and leave them a review they deserved. Half a year ago, my laptop had a hardware malfunction and I needed a quick fix. I found these guys on yelp and gave them a call explaining the problem with my trackpad. They told me to bring it in and gave me a free diagnostics. It's been a while so I don't remember the pricing exactly, but most of it was the part they ordered. The service fee was pretty cheap. I also knew how much a replacement trackpad would have cost me by doing my own googling so they gave me the real price without overcharging. When I got my laptop back, it wouldn't charge. Brought it back their place and it suddenly decided to work. It decided to work at home as well. Weird. This is in no way their fault but it's relevant because fast forward to today: my charger stopped working again. I tried every outlet in my house. No luck. I brought it in and tried their outlet. It works. Brought it home. It works again. What in the world? Maybe they have some kind of magic touch. Still, the guy at the front was more than helpful and still provided me with a validation for my parking without charging me for anything. He told me to go ahead and come back if I had any issues. The place can be easy to miss so you have to look carefully. It's pretty clean and organized on the inside. They'll call you once whatever you dropped off is ready to be picked up. Well - I stupidly cracked the screen on my laptop (closed the lid while a mouse was on the keyboard) and felt I would probably have to write it off. Looked around on Yelp, and saw that The Cheap Squad had a lot of very favorable write ups, so I decided to bring it to them for a repair estimate. I got a quote that I felt was very reasonable, and decided to have them go ahead and do the work. Their policy is if they can't fix your electronic equipment, there is no charge. Now - this laptop has a very large screen, so I realized it would be a while before they could get one in on order. Anyway - I got my machine back today, new screen looks great, and they even returned my old one. Extraordinary Customer Service! My laptop died while I was on vacation. I got an appointment shortly after returning. After determining that the motherboard was dead, the team agreed to take my data off the hard drive and load it onto a stick for me the same day. When they let me know it was ready, they said, "Don't park. Just come to the loading zone and we'll bring everything out to you." It was pouring rain that night in San Jose. What a blessing! The only trouble? I had to adjust my check to an amount $60 less than what I was originally quoted for a diagnosis. I'm delighted and would not hesitate to use their service again. Top marks hereI I trundled downtown to their shop on 2nd St. I was greeted by the same guy I talked with on the phone, Jeremy, a very enthusiastic and amicable guy for sure. I knew the customer service here was going to be great and was not disappointed. They ended up happily taking in my YLOD'd PS3 and a bricked Asus laptop I had. The PS3 was 'reflowed' and fixed in a couple of days, excellent work and it's now totally clean inside (bonus, and a good maintenance idea if you've had one of these for years). The laptop required diagnosis and they determined it's the motherboard, even taking the time to show me the readout on the multimeter demonstrating where the power stopped flowing through the board itself. They didn't even charge me for the laptop diag as there was no fix, and the PS3 was only $80 to repair (WAY cheaper than a new one as you no-doubt already know). If I get the motivation to fix it, I need only source a new motherboard for the laptop and drop it off to them -- I know I don't need to worry about the quality of their work. Excellent customer service, great attitude, and +1 karma for these guys who are making a great business for themselves. Much obliged! read more

I have not written a review for a store/restaurant in a truly long time. But Cheap Squad warrants one. Not only is the service they provide, fast and reliable, they are courteous and explain their services to ease the customer into working things out with them. I know my fair share of electronic repairs and what not, but I've almost no clue as to how I'd fix a console. I brought in my PS3 (which had a red blinking light of death), and Javier (one of the technicians) and Cheap Squad were able to fix it within days. Walking/biking distance for anyone living in Downtown San Jose, this neighborhood repair shop is a good sight for sore eyes. Appreciate all the help folks! My laptop keyboard was only partially working - numbers were working but letters and characters were not so I couldn't even login to the laptop. And, of course, the Asus website was down so I couldn't do the usual research I prefer to do to solve problems myself. I didn't feel like trying to open the case and mess with the keyboard, either, at the risk of making the problem worse. I found Cheap Squad through Yelp reviews and decided to give them a shot. Both young men I dealt with during drop off and pick up were cordial and polite. Jose took in the laptop and got me in and out quickly. The young man who was there for pick up was equally efficient. They got the laptop repaired in the time quoted and it works just fine, now. They charged me only the base repair price repair. I highly recommend these guys. The Cheap Squad is wonderfully wonderful! This wasn't my first experience with them, but this recent one was something special. So I dropped my laptop, broke the display, bent the casing, and some of the keys didn't work...not my best moment. I took it to the Geek Squad (they were closer to me at the time) and my god - they said it would cost $1300 AND a 2 week wait! My laptop is not even worth that much. Jesse was a great help to me -- he assisted me with diagnosing the problem and after a couple of hours was able to recommend a variety of options moving forward. I walked in and dropped off my laptop which had a dc jack problem. They said they can diagnose and be sure, then order and install the part. They called me to confirm ordering the part and that it might not be a guaranteed fix. Within a week (this wasn't a rush job), I had my computer back. It works great and haven't had any problems. Their standard labor charge is quite expensive for my taste, but I definitely felt more confident of their service and skill than some of the other shops or stores I've been to that seem to advertise computer repair as a side business. I'll gladly return and pay it again if I have another issue that I can't fix myself. These guys actually can figure out your computer problems and fix them. Unlike places which are a complete joke and bill you for unnecessary or incorrect repairs (looking at you BB Geek Squad), The Cheap Squad got the job done with no fuss. Expect to pay around $150 (or more depending on if you need new parts ordered), but know they'll get you up and running if it's possible to do so. read more

Awesome! I emailed The Cheap Squad asking about our PS3 not playing bluray discs. I received a response back within an hour or so with possible solutions - on par with everything I've looked up online (we were going to try to fix it ourselves but after hearing about their policy; Free Diagnostics-No fix, NO CHARGE, thought it'd be best to save us the time and energy). Brought it in and dropped it off on a Thursday afternoon ... told me they had everything in stock, and received a call less than 2 hours later saying it was ready for pick up. Parking can be validated across the street and payment and pickup was easy (paid and can have your receipt sent by text or email). Everything is working great and it's back to normal. Plus we have 90 days incase any issues/problems arise! We definitely saved time, money and a new PS3! read more

I would give this place TEN STARS if I could. Really great experience with this repair shop. My laptop was not charging and they opened it to check the hard drive. They said some piece was probably the problem. They went through the trouble of ordering that part for me, and promised to not charge me a penny if it didn't work. Not even for the labor! In the end, they were correct. I got my laptop fixed and a 60 (or 90, don't remember) day warranty from them in case it breaks again. They'll even do the initial check up to see what the problem is FOR FREE. Plus, did I mention that they validate parking? Really worth going to for your device's needs. Only downside is that it took two weeks to get the job done. Including the initial check up, waiting for the part to come in, and final testings. Still worth going to though! read more

I discovered this wonderful place on Yelp and sure enough it is amazing. Jeremy is a gem of a guy. I am a college prof whose hard drive had crashed and I was in a total mess for I had to teach on Monday. I called and explained my predicament. Jeremy worked on it all day Saturday, came in early to work on it Sunday ( which was way beyond what I had expected) and was able to recover my data, place it on another computer and have me ready and going for my class on Monday. I never expected such dedication to customers. Not only is he utterly professional and reasonable, he is kind, understanding and sympathetic to his customer's needs- a trait you will hardly find in any Bay area businessman. Hats off to him. I brought in my last "fat" gen PS3 with a bum disc drive. The last blu-ray it ever played was Saving Private Ryan. Guess it got too real to handle? I brought it in to Daniel who got in touch with his video game guy on a Wednesday. He had one laying around and was able to install and turn it around to me by Friday. 100 bucks.. i know it's a triple digit repair and half the price of a new model these days, but it's the last fatgen PS3 dude! When I was recommended to check out this place for the Red Rings of Death on my 360, I was a little hesitant... i mean, The Cheap Squad? That just reeks of sketchy... Good thing the name refers to their price and not their quality. I basically brought in my whole 360 (which I had dismantled and tried to repair myself, but to no avail) and was told that they'd give me a call back in 24 to 48 hours. About two days later, I received a call from one of the members letting me know the situation... Unfortunately, due to my attempts at self-repair, I had cut part of the tracers for the system and it was permanently ko'd. He let me know to just drop by the shop and pick it up when I get the chance. So, what's with the five stars if my 360 didn't even get fixed? Simply because their service is superb. Not only were they personal and quick, but the nicest part is that the inspection is for free. Also, they don't charge if they're unable to fix anything. Very nice! I'll definitely consider coming back here if I have any other trouble with electronics. read more

Right downtown San Jose so if you work in the area you can just walk on over. I know nothing about computers - except maybe how to turn them on and surf the internet, which is probably why I picked up a nasty virus. I always start with thanking Yelp. Can't be helped. And I'm not a poet. So, I have an all in one Vaio, sort of a heavy big screen computer that I have passed on to my wife once I obtained my first Mac (yay!) As fate would have it, the Vaio died of loneliness and I searched for a good shop to take it to. I found The Cheap Squad. First of all, I like their guarantee. Fix it or you don't pay. The problem was a CPU fan quit spinning (dust, dirt?) and the computer sensing this would not boot. They had a 100.00 starting inspection fee (for this particular computer) which, if you ever tired to take one of these apart, is worth it. Then if they can fix it for little labor - there's not much more, if anything of a charge. Sure enough, they blew it out, unstuck the fan and off to the races. Except the fan was near death, and died soon afterwards (2 weeks) - probably of shock that it was so clean. This is why you want to come here first. They were so good to take it back, and open it up again, and replace the fan this time (they were only trying to help me save money the first time by the way), and I agreed ahead of time to pay at least a nominal fee for the labor and the fan. Charge was minimal, and I still feel sort of guilty as they were only trying to help me with the first service. That kind of conscientious work is so hard to come by. The hard part really is opening the case of the VAIO. I'm gong no where else for my computer repair, period. I have 3 machines, so it's likely I'll see them again sometime. Meanwhile my best friend's college daughter just had her laptop go down (water damage in her backpack from a leaky bottle !!!) so I'm sending him to the Cheap Squad on Monday. The hits keep coming. I took my lap top to the Cheap squad to have the monitor replaced, after having dropped it off at the Staples Tech Desk first and being quoted the incorrect price then requoted an insanely higher price to do the work - and it was going to take 4 days for the work to be completed. After looking at the reviews on Yelp and calling around, I took the lap top to the Cheap Squad, dropped it off, and was told it should be ready within 48 hours. I ran an errand and on the way home, the tech called me and told me that my lap top was ready to be picked up ... needless to say, I was a happy customer! I then found an old computer that I wanted rebuilt for my children to use, took it to the Cheap Squad, the computer was ready the next day ... additionally, the guy carried the computer to my car for me. My custom built Gaming PC decided one day not to boot up. It was a situation that I hadn't seen before but never the less I started trouble shooting. Couldn't discover the problem and needed some folks with better resources. After reviewing a couple of places I cam across The Cheap Squad and decided to try them out. First off, the customer service was fantastic. Very nice, respectful and wanting to get it right. Here is the best part though, they tell you the pricing up front and it is much better than a lot of places. The best is that they do diagnosis for free and only charge if they have to fix something. Of course you want to know if they fixed my PC. Yes, they got it running again. They spent 2 days trouble shooting (it is a custom build and its about 4 years old so its not as easy as diagnosing say a Dell.) They narrowed it down to a couple of things and laid those out for me. They also noted a thing or two I did wrong when I built it 4 years ago (They were very diplomatic in pointing it out which my ego appreciated). Bottom line, they were able to tell me that my PC was running again. At that point I had a working PC and my cost was zero. I asked how much it would be for them to do a couple of things that they recommended and the cost was very reasonable so had them do it. The way I was treated and the success of delivering my PC back working will get them more work from me in the future. I have already started recommending them to folks that ask me for a good spot to get a repair. These Guys are GREAT!! They where very friendly and they got the job done in a very timely manner. I gave them my daughters XBox to fix because it kept freezing when turning on the machine. This has been a issue since the first month of purchasing it. I sent out the machine 2 times to Xbox for them to fix. I had to pay for shipping each time and they kept the machine 3 months at a time and never fixed the problem. Unfortunately, the old computer had to be put to rest since the power supply was completely dead. On a good note, I really appreciated that Cheap Squad was able to still transfer all of my personal info from my old computer onto a thumb drive. Very professional and nice staff. Their policy is pretty strait forward and simple: if they can't fix it, you don't pay anything. They also offer free diagnosis.
