The Motown Philly is my favorite! It's full of flavor, I love mushrooms. When you take a bite it's full of flavors! The bread does get moist but that's to be expected so get some napkins. The steak fries are crunchy and soft inside. Perfect balance. The combo comes with a drink and fries. Everyone was nice and they did not mess up our order! The shop is clean and welcoming. Philadelphia birthed the San Francisco Warriors who now are the Golden State Warriors which still play in San Francisco. Inside you find a shrine dedicated to San Francisco sports history from Niners to Giants players. San Francisco has always been about sports and like Philadelphia has loyal sports fans ( the old Veterans Stadium for the Philadelphia Eagles had their own jail inside). I came and got a cheese steak with provolone cheese. The civil war among Philly cheese steak eaters is cheese whiz or provolone. I prefer cheese whiz in general because of the nacho cheese texture. I come here for the provolone on my cheese steak here. The bread was fresh and they put plenty cuts of meat and it has the right amount of provolone. As the Oakland sports teams deserted Oakland now San Francisco is left to pick up the pieces . San Francisco sports teams are now being rebranded under the banner " The Bay" . I still consider San Francisco Giants and 49ers to be San Francisco teams simple and plain. I will not call them the Niners from Frisco ( the Dallas Cowboys headquarters and football practice facility is in Frisco, Texas). I stopped by before a Dr. Appt across the street at 11:25 am on a Tuesday. I waited five minutes just to order and when finally got to order they charged me for a large steak fries instead of a regular. I even said it twice cause he asked twice. But still got it wrong. I'm guessing a lot of people don't look at the receipt or get it printed so this is an easy way for the cashiers to make an extra buck on orders. I am so sorry to report that my experience was not good. First off, the cashier gave me a dirty look for wanting to order something. Very unwelcoming. I was trying to place my order but I couldn't understand a single word he was saying. He was mumbling so bad and gave me an attitude that I didn't understand him. I even apologized and said I had a hard time understanding. I wanted to tell him to enunciate his words but I thought, maybe he had a speech impediment and said nothing. I asked him about the loyalty card and he acted like I was crazy. Finally, the cook said that I had to download the app. When I got home, I couldn't read the writing on the wrapper. I got a Western and when I unwrapped it, I thought, where's the onion ring? Oh, is it that slimy thing? Yep. The roll felt like it had been microwaved because it had rock hard edges. I did not taste a single drop of BBQ sauce either. My friend gave me a bite of the Detroit and it was much better, just a little too salty for me. On the other hand, it was clean inside. This place used to be good years ago. No where near it now. I'd say it's a disgrace to call this a Philly Cheesesteak. They should change the name to West Coast or SF mincemeat sliders. It's an embarrassment to the real Philly cheesesteaks. Barely enough meat in the sandwich and it was bland, not enough seasoning. You order at the counter and listen for them to call your name. There is no service. They used to have bottles of Tabasco out in the dining area but now they give out packets of hot sauce. They have a large tv for customers to watch while eating in the decent sized dining room. Parking is not good. If there aren't parking spaces in the front, keep going. I asked on the phone if they would honor my loyalty cards. The person transfered me to the manager who first told me no, they don't take the cards anymore and is based on the phone number. I asked if she would be able to honor the cards or transfer it to my number since there is no expiration date. she told me to come in to see and talk to in person. I arrived to the store only to be told that she would not honor the loyalty cards. The other sraff were laughing speaking in thier language. Then, she was rude and condisendingly stating that "It has been 2-3 years ago that it changed. No! I can not give you anything!". I asked why didn't she just tell me on the phone she would not honor it? She said "I want to tell you face to face!" I have 20 stamps on 3 cards and could not eat the Philly cheese steaks for a period of time for health reasons. But, now that I am healthier, I missed the Philly cheese steak sandwiches and wanted to enjoy them again. But, now with the horrible treatment I recieved I am not sure I will ever patronize this establishment again! This is a horrible way to treat a previously loyal customer who wants to eat that fatty unhealthy garbage again. Welp, we've come here a handful of times because my son loves cheesesteaks, but tonight is the second time out of about five times that he has gotten severe stomach pain after eating here. The first time it happened, he vomited multiple times. We didn't come back for a couple years. Super disappointed that it's happened again. I had many a Philly cheesesteak when I lived in SE Pennsylvania. The Cheese Steak Shop served up a good approximation of the hometown pride though the bread lacked body but had a good chew. The beef was more chipped than sliced but nicely gooey with provolone cheese. They went a little over-the-top with hot & sweet peppers. Unless you're a member of the swim or track team and burning calories like a furnace, this fat-tastic delight of a sandwich should be reserved for an occasional indulgence. Excuse this right off the bat because I have a love hate relationship with San Francisco...so don't take any negative comments as being especially bad. But, I see San Francisco for what it is...a great and fascinating city suffering from a crushing weight of people struggling to exist in a crowded and diametrically opposed economic class status. So...upon first entering this place...I was surprised at how relatively clean and "newish" it appeared. From the outside, like much of San Francisco's businesses (in average persons areas) it looks run down and old. However, not the case here. So score a star simply for that. Upon hitting the counter to order...friendly staff that actually looked engaged versus the typical overworked, underpaid working posture and matching attitude many places have. Score a second star for that. Now to the food...and I'll keep it simple. The sandwich is skimpy on the meat and the frys could have been a few fries more. However, the meat in the sandwich was very tasty...the onions wonderfully caramelized and tasty! Also, the bread...excellent, crusty enough to have body and hold up to the juxiness of a cheesesteak...yet soft enough to easily bite through and not too dense that it was dry. So great bread. 2 stars for that. And...while I said the meat was skimpy...compared to Cheesesteaks out East...it turned out to be a much more filling Sandwich than I expected...and the portion of fries, actually perfect. I left feeling full without needing to immediately fall into a food coma. Again, as this is San Francisco...I won't give a 5th Star...no easy parking, cramped spaces, and generally restrooms are non-existant to hidden secrets. If you're a cheesesteak fan...this place doesn't deliver the Philly experience but is close enough to easily satisfy that craving.
