    cheese steak and steak fries
    Max E.

This spot is an oldie but goodie! I used to live in San Francisco many years ago, and The Cheese Steak Shop was always a must-stop for me back then. On our recent visit, I wanted my wife to experience their cheesesteak for herself. Parking is street parking only, so good luck -- you'll probably have to circle the block a few times before finding a spot. The place itself is small, with just a handful of tables, but it's the food you come for, not the ambiance. What made their cheesesteak stand out for me years ago were the sweet peppers. Unfortunately, they no longer use the same brand (they used to have San-Del sweet pepper strips in sweet brine). Now they use hot cherry peppers that appear to be canned specifically for them. It's not quite the same as I remember, but still good enough that I'd come back. My wife and I both had the original cheesesteak, and you can't leave without getting their steak fries -- they're a must. We enjoyed our meal, and I'd definitely stop by again if parking's available. This place has been around forever, and for good reason. Give it a try if you're in the neighborhood. Prices are standard for San Francisco.

I always like cheesesteak hoagies. Lucky I found one around the corner from a job. I'm doing. The service was good, but they messed up a few orders that we ordered, but it was OK. They made it up.

Feels like a chain, in the spirit of Jimmy John's. But also everything is made fresh to order, so has that local feel too. Was quite impressed by how tasty the cheese steak was! Classic Philly Cheese Steak w/ American Cheese, Onions, Hot Peppers, Sweet Peppers: I kinda thought a classic was just cheez whiz and steak, but I rolled with with their definition. Seemed like a lot going on when I got it, but it ended up being kind of amazing together. American Cheese (or cheese product) is still a lot meltier and fattier than real cheese, so it's got that cheez whiz mouthfeel. The onions were integrated into the steak, so added flavor without disrupting the texture. The peppers added a nice zing, but didn't dominate. Also, loved the chewy bread. I got the king size and had leftovers, it amazing tasted just as good the next day. Steak Fries w/ Guylic Spice: I don't see thick steak fries often, but they are a fun departure from the typical thinner variety. Nice crispy edges and soft mush inside. The guylic spice seemed like garlic pepper salt and added a nice flavor without overpowering.

Hoagies are amazing! Steak is juicy! Peppers add the perfect amount of heat. Staff knows what they're doing, very polite & friendly. Clean tables, clean bathroom. I definitely recommend the Hoagie w extra peppers I will definitely come back.

Motown Philly - has Sliced Mushrooms - size Regular (Half) and regular steak fries .

The Motown Philly is my favorite! It's full of flavor, I love mushrooms. When you take a bite it's full of flavors! The bread does get moist but that's to be expected so get some napkins. The steak fries are crunchy and soft inside. Perfect balance. The combo comes with a drink and fries. Everyone was nice and they did not mess up our order! The shop is clean and welcoming. I love the SF Niners and Giants decor. I highly recommend this spot if you're craving a cheesesteak!

BOY HAS THE SIZE OF THE SANDWICHES CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?!?! Don't get it misconstrued, it's not BAD in terms of flavor. However, the portion is definitely not worth the price, nor is the wait. Staff are always friendly tho and the decor in this place is filled with Bay Area history.

It's the legendary and still San Francisco Forty Niners ( Never Frisco Niners unless you are a Cowboys fan)
    Juan V.

Philadelphia birthed the San Francisco Warriors who now are the Golden State Warriors which still play in San Francisco. Inside you find a shrine dedicated to San Francisco sports history from Niners to Giants players. San Francisco has always been about sports and like Philadelphia has loyal sports fans ( the old Veterans Stadium for the Philadelphia Eagles had their own jail inside). I came and got a cheese steak with provolone cheese. The civil war among Philly cheese steak eaters is cheese whiz or provolone. I prefer cheese whiz in general because of the nacho cheese texture. I come here for the provolone on my cheese steak here. The bread was fresh and they put plenty cuts of meat and it has the right amount of provolone. As the Oakland sports teams deserted Oakland now San Francisco is left to pick up the pieces . San Francisco sports teams are now being rebranded under the banner " The Bay" . I still consider San Francisco Giants and 49ers to be San Francisco teams simple and plain. I will not call them the Niners from Frisco ( the Dallas Cowboys headquarters and football practice facility is in Frisco, Texas). Come here for cheesesteaks where they chop the steak and add provolone cheese on the bottom and they add sauce on top San Francisco sports fan make a stop at The Cheese Steak Shop where they don't drop the ball on quality of cheese steaks because they don't serve slop

I stopped by before a Dr. Appt across the street at 11:25 am on a Tuesday. I waited five minutes just to order and when finally got to order they charged me for a large steak fries instead of a regular. I even said it twice cause he asked twice. But still got it wrong. I'm guessing a lot of people don't look at the receipt or get it printed so this is an easy way for the cashiers to make an extra buck on orders. They were helping other customers so didn't want to get back in line and wait.

Missing onion rings in this western Philly I order. Barely any provolone cheese. Super disappointed
    Tim C.

Order the western Philly and there was no onion rings in it like the menu description said. Feels like I got ripped off.

Micheal the gentleman who took our order was pretty entertaining. Told a few jokes while helping us. We ordered the sizzling pig , steak fries and a salad. Yum.

The Cheesesteak Shop is divine. Sure it's a heart attack on a plate, probably has your annual recommended amount of sodium hit in a single serving, and could possibly cause violent, explosive, episodes in the bathroom hours after eating, but I don't care. This is my go to spot to eat, if I'm happy, sad, troubled. Definition of comfort food. Bring a wet wipe for your hands because you'll be dripping grease.

Best cheesesteaks in the bay. Need one say more? So much better and more reliable than all the fufu gourmet sandwich places popping up.

Do you guys also sell the jar of peppers displayed behind the counter? If you do what's the cost?

There used to be a Philly cheese steak sandwich place in san Francisco I used to go to as a kid in early 80s..it was on divisadaro...place was decked out with Philly gear. Is that where this place got the idea?

But when you want a sandwich that only tastes like its ingredients, Irving Subs is the spot. Their Dutch crunch is famous for being fresh and actually crunchy. Their lettuce is shredded but fresh and crispy. The salt content is just enough to bring out the flavors. And the overall composition of their sandwiches are very well proportioned. You're not getting skimped, but you're also not biting into a mouthful of a packet of deli meat. They definitely know what they are doing. Double pastrami, horseradish, havarti, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, and pepperoncini. A lot going on, and it all came together. The horseradish and havarti gave it enough personality to stand apart from a standard pastrami sandwich, and the garlicky mayo tied everything together. The one casualty of DoorDash was sogginess by the time it arrived. That's not a knock on the sandwich, it's just the reality of ordering something like this for delivery. At $14.50 it's a hearty sandwich at a fair price. I'd recommend it, but eat in.

The fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and quality bread make for a simple but perfectly executed sandwich, and the avocado addition makes it even better. The service is always friendly and efficient, whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch or taking your time looking through the shop. The atmosphere has that classic Italian deli feel -- casual, welcoming, and full of character. I also love that it's more than just a sandwich shop; the deli includes an Italian market with imported products, specialty items, and other treats that make it fun to browse while you're there. They also have multiple locations throughout San Francisco, which makes it convenient when you're craving a great Italian sandwich. The biggest downside is the price. Limoncello is definitely on the expensive side for a sandwich, especially if you add extras, so it's more of an occasional treat than an everyday lunch spot. But the quality of the ingredients and the overall experience keep me coming back. A great neighborhood deli for anyone looking for a fresh Italian sandwich, friendly service, and a little taste of Italy in the city.
