I wanted to try more cheesesteaks, so I decided to get food from here. I went here on a Friday for an early dinner. I ordered the Jay's Favorite for to-go. The Jay's Favorite was good, but a bit messy mainly because of the amount of toppings inside (not a bad thing though)! The food also wasn't that hot, which I usually prefer it to be hotter. Just had lunch at Jay's. I think I must have been the first order of the day cuz I got there about 10mins after they opened. I Had the go-to, mushroom and cheese, no onions, small fries. I laid off the side of whiz today. Since I was there first, the food came out right away! Nice and hot. The register lady was nice. Usually they have tables outside but maybe it's not warm enough today. The food: fries were hot and crispy. The sandwich: nice and cheezy, almost too salty, but good. I'm vegetarian and finding a delicious sandwich place can be hard if you don't know where to go. Jay's Cheesesteak makes amazing vegetarian sandwiches! Definitely come if you're hungry bc I could only finish half of my sandwich! The portions are really big. I had a Seitan Sandwich with pesto and mushrooms and it was so flavorful! My boyfriend got the SF Giants cheesesteak and he was super impressed. The bread was the right texture (not too dry or soggy), great flavors, and the perfect hot sandwich. The place is very small! We came with a group of 10+ and we pretty much took up the whole space. The servers were nice and were able to serve us quickly considering how many people and one cook, probably 4 sandwiches and some sides at a time. I use to go to Jays Cheesesteaks great service until one day. I went in for a cheesesteak and mozzarella sticks as I was waiting, I noticed they were making chicken tenders using a frozen brand from a grocery store they said don't tell the manager makes me wonder what else are they doing back there. They said they had ran out not mention it used to come on a nice baguette, roll perfectly toasted they changed it to some kind of pretzel. Top roll in the heart of the mission. They should keep it original. Always when you put your order in pretty sure it's the owner kind of looks like Vin Diesel always trying to up the sale when you clearly said your order when you called or walk in Now I remember they were using Tyson tenders frozen brand from the store.‍ if I wanted that, I could do that at home. I think they do fine cheese-steaks but never order a Patty Melt there! They toasted (not grilled) the sourdough bread (not rye) they added tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and red onion (not grilled onion) and the cheese was not even melted. I was finally able to stop by this wonderful establishment before they had to close due to the lease and less customers. I was greeted by the owner Jay who was warm and friendly to me and everyone who stopped by. As it was the second to the last day, they had less stock available which is understandable. I ordered the hangover steak with fries and mushrooms. It was outstanding! The chefs made it as perfect as possible. If Jay reopens another cheesesteak, I will be there for his fixings. My family and I hosted a Super Bowl party, and since the Eagles were playing, we wanted to serve Philly cheesesteaks. Instead of making the meat myself, I figured I would order enough for 12. I called several of SF's highest-rated cheesesteak spots, and Jay's was the easiest to work with and most reasonably priced. Guests were happy. We were happy. The meat was delicious. I really love this little spot! It's a nice little hole in the wall type place and the food is amazing! When I used to work in the city I would visit this little place often for my street burger type fix. I love how they put the shredded lettuce on your burger and how they have hot peppers on the side that you can snag when you pick up your order. It reminds me of a SoCal spot I used to love growing up. I call it a little burger joint. So it's cash only at this establishment but everything is fairly priced so you don't need too much cash! What I like about jays is it's consistency. No matter what I know when I come here my food is going to be good! There are plenty of places in the mission but to be honest the other spots that serve burgers are over priced and not as delicious. You could easily spend $20 in the mission for a burger but at jays you can get a burger fries and a drink less than $20! I come here whenever I'm in town and in the mood for a good burger. read more

The food was really good but the atmosphere was strange and the service just ok. I had a Beyond Meat Vegetarian Cheesesteak with grilled onions, cheese, pickles, mustard, and mayo. It was really good. Lots of flavor, didn't miss the meat. The way the mustard, mayo, and cheese blended together created a fantastic sauce. The pickles were an accident but they added to the flavor nicely. Giant side of deep fried tater tots were also quite good. Bordering on heavy but very tasty. Only 4* because the experience itself was kind of weird... They were busy, so the service was rushed... like they were just sort of putting up with me. No ETA for the food when I ordered and apparently they had some large orders ahead of me so I waited probably 15 minutes without any clue how long it would be. And I asked for side sauces and they didn't give them to me. Plus the crowd was sort of weird. Someone was hanging out at a table inside with a full size sledge hammer. In 2004, the original (?) Jay's Cheesesteak may have scored three stars because its Divisadero cousin (owned and run by the real-life brother of the owner of Jay's Cheesesteak) was larger, had better places to sit, and gave you bigger portions of everything. Jay's Cheesesteak #2 (RIP) also cared deeply about the differences among its seitan varieties. At Jay's on 21st Street, a pizza seitan often tastes suspiciously like a plain seitan, and the seitan-variant pricing is similarly suspect. If you haven't noticed, it's not 2004 anymore. Many of my most beloved places to eat in San Francisco are long gone, including Jay's Cheesesteak #2. After that sad closure, I would sometimes order delivery from this Jay's, but it was never the same. It's so far away from my place that it just wouldn't taste the same, and it would just make me sadder if I ordered too often, so I stopped. Then about halfway through COVID, I realized that parking in the Mish probably wasn't as bad as usual, and what do you know? I was right! So about every three weeks or so, I'd find a parking spot within a block or two of Jay's on 21st Street, order a seitan sandwich, and be back enjoying it in my living room right quick. As time dragged on, parking became more difficult, not just near Jay's, but also near my place. So delivering Jay's to myself isn't as easy or rewarding as it used to be, but tradition is tradition, and the seitan sandwiches are still delightful, even if they're not as good as they were at Jay's #2 in 2004. And probably the best part, the very thing that saves it all for me, is that this Jay's still has its OG Sirron Norris mural on its wall. The horrible people who took over the former Jay's #2 storefront on Divis promptly painted over both SN murals, including I Fell in Love with a Girl on Fell Street. Heathens, I tell you, heathens. Don't come for the atmosphere. Come for the seitan. If you see me waiting for my pizza or teriyaki seitan, ask me about the glory days of Jay's #2 on Divis. I can still do a pretty good, "Hello, Jay's!" impression. read more

Not for Philly purists, so just admit that and get over yourself. However, in terms of a warm shaved meat sandwich, this was delicious! I'd take this over boring cold cold cuts any day! The SF Giant Cheesesteak w/ Cheez Whiz: Fresh beef and cured beef (i.e. pastrami) play off each other unexpectedly well. Dare I say it's the perfect balance of saltiness since all pastrami would be way too intense and all fresh beef wouldn't be that salty? I opted for cheez whiz and got a generous portion nicely distributed throughout the cooked meat and onions. They also added a little mustard to the bun, which was a fun addition to enhance the pastrami side of things. The bread was fluffy and crispy at the same time. A really filling sandwich, so you could probably split this with someone else or save half for later. Waffle Fries: Love the shape, so much more fun than stick fries. There seemed to be a lot "seasoned fry" type of coating cooked out, which was decent. What's really nice is to dip these in the two sauces by the counter. One seemed creamy and garlicky while the other seemed creamy and spicy. read more
