    Politically Correct (half eaten, sorry!)
    Shannon Z.

Locally owned and they have parking. Everything is fresh, the service is reasonably fairly fast. The interior has bench seating and counter level seating. The "Politically Correct" is a solid vegetarian sandwich. I generally have negative feelings about mustard, and I prefer my sandwiches cold, however Pop's has converted me to accepting these.

    Lancelotti

Pop's is deceptive because it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside the sandwiches deliver. I know this because I was two bites into my second half of my Lancelotti before I remembered to grab a pic. They took a few minutes longer than I expectd, but you can't rush art. The bread is a standout, crispy, fluffy, chewy, phenomenal. Everything tastes fresh and high quality (okay the tomato left something to be desired but it's January and they can't change the seasons). The ratios are all just right. Just a winner all around. I didn't need to eat the second half but I did have to. Pro Tip: grab em to go and head up the road to Fort Funston for a little picnic and a walkabout. Can't be beat.

Used for over $100 ? Frisco pricing ?

The late Sacramento-born author Herb Caen of the book " Don't call it Frisco" has a sandwich. Don't call it Frisco has been a long debated since I was a kid playing kickball at the school yard and it's quite controversial among natives in San Francisco today. This debate question has been here before me and it will be still be around decades later( beating a dead horse) . I didn't come here to debate or bark about what San Francisco should be called in 2024( in my opinion is that you call it what you want, it's all the same). I am here to see if the namesake "Herb tribute " sandwich is as consistent as I last remembered it. Stepping inside of Pops Sandwiches store brings me back to the Candlestick days of both San Francisco 49ers and the SF Giants. It was cool to see SF Giants legend "The Hac-man "( he is not a cybersecurity threat but a pitchers threat) Jeffrey Leonard autograph memorabilia on the wall. The pictures on the wall at Pops suspends and transports me back in time. Now the Herb Caen sandwich has meatballs, provolone cheese and marinara sauce. It's a well balanced sandwich on daily fresh baked bread without any overwhelming ingredients along with a good savory sauce. Maybe better than I remembered it. Very consistent. Other sandwich namesakes include the " Blazing Saddles", "Politically Correct ",Twin Peaks", " The Wharf" and "The Dons". I recommend ordering is the "1 Flap Down" sandwich. As Pops Sandwiches website describes it as "This is a symphony of flavors". For what's it worth get the sandwich at Pops called "The Wharf" The Twin Peaks, whatever you call San Francisco it's still my place of birth

    Meatball Sandwich

Ordered 3 sandwiches to go from Pop's and not only was it ready on time, but it was also placed on top of the toaster which kept them warm (because while Pop's was on time, I was not...) which was much appreciated! Upon unwrapping the goods at home, I was delighted to find that the sandwiches were generously stacked but also not too saucy/wet which makes for soggy bread (and no one likes that). We split all the sandwiches such that everyone got to try a little of each and I have to say that the Lancelotti was my favorite! Not only did it combine some of my favorite meats (mortaaaaadella and salami) but it also included artichoke hearts which to me is *chef's kiss* on my any sandwich. I also really enjoyed the meatball sandwich. The meatballs were so tender and juicy and the marinara sauce was just enough to hug every crevice without soaking the sandwich. As for the Greek, there was nothing bad about it but also nothing particular that stood out. I think a shake of red vinegar would have given this sandwich the extra oomph it needed. All in all, prices at Pop's is super fair and the sandwich is a good size. It'll fill you up but it won't paralyze you compared to some other places. I definitely would come back to Pop's and I'm almost sorry for not discovering this joint until now!

My 6-year-old actually suggested we come here since it's just a block from his school. He built his own veggie sandwich, and I went with the Lancelotti--it seemed to be the crowd favorite based on Yelp reviews. The sandwiches we got were solid--simple, tasty, no complaints. The two employees working were also super friendly, which made the experience even better. Good vibes always go a long way.

The Lancelotti - Salami, Ham, Mortadella, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Mustard, Mayo, Onion, Pepperoncini, Artichoke, Special Dressing

To be perfectly honest, I didn't really know what to expect the first time I walked into Pop's Sandwich Shop. While I had passed by a handful of times over the years, I had never even stopped to look through the window to see what the place looked like inside. Yet, despite not having any expectations, my experiences here have still been such a pleasant surprise! Now, maybe it's because of its quiet, quaint location, but the one thing that I did assume (somewhat incorrectly) about Pop's was that their menu of sandwiches were more "classic" - roast beef, hot pastrami, turkey, meatballs, etc. However, while a lot of those staples make an appearance, many have a slight twist on them. Others are entirely unique (Greek Sandwich, combinations with artichoke, etc). In all, they have about two dozen different options to choose from, along with the typical option to build your own sandwich. Admittedly, none of them jumped off the page as the singular "MUST TRY" sandwich, but there were quite a few whose descriptions were rather intriguing (yet I unknowingly managed to get two that were very similar to each other...).. -- THE LANCELOTTI - Salami, Ham, Mortadella, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Mustard, Mayo, Onion, Pepperoncini, Artichoke, Special Dressing...$10.98 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/pops-sandwich-shop-san-francisco?select=JMlxZuBFrLeyETAZ0qY4hA) I didn't get it as listed on the menu (held the artichokes - just sounded better without it), but what I had was pretty decent. The sandwich was toasted nicely, there was a fair amount of all three meats, and it wasn't drowning in dressing. -- "FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT" - Spicy Coppa, Salami, Pepper Jack Cheese, Mustard, Mayonnaise, Pepperoncini, Lettuce, and Tomato...$12.23 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/pops-sandwich-shop-san-francisco?select=WIjjkUOsC81KPi0vrESRyw) In terms of flavor, this one was better, as the bit of heat from the coppa and pepper jack complemented everything else really well. However, not only did they give me a French roll instead of the Dutch crunch I ordered, but the bread was dry/burnt as well. Sadge. In addition to the sandwiches themselves, the other aspect of Pop's that I really like is how warm and friendly the staff is. Both times I was here, the workers were super nice and even chatted up a couple of customers who seemed like regulars. What's more, if you're looking to eat outside, they have a parklet out front that they share with the Round Table next door, from which you can also order wine and beer, if you're looking for an adult beverage to enjoy with your meal. Not bad, considering so few sandwich shops in SF offer any kind of outdoor seating, parklet or otherwise. All in all, though, while Pop's is a pretty solid sandwich shop, the reason for rounding down from THREE AND A HALF STARS is that, in terms of value, I thought they fell a little short in terms of value. By no means is that to say that their menu prices are egregiously high; at $11-$12 each, they're fairly middle of the road (maybe $1-$2 above average). It's just that, compared to what I get from some of my favorite haunts, like Lou's Cafe and Two Sons, the portion sizes felt a bit light. Certainly not to the point of deterring me from trying a couple of their other sandwiches that caught my eye (and maybe up my rating), but it does make me mildly less inclined to go out of my way to come back. Although the utter wealth of parking around here is really nice...

If you haven't been, do not walk, run... and get there fast bc food like this is hard to find. I consider myself a sandwich connoisseur to say the least. My family is in the restaurant business so we fully understand what it takes to please "everyone" even those who are impossible to please... and let me tell you with countless delis all over, simply put, that's the last business we would dare to venture, due to the "hard to please" factor alone .... That being said, I have a business in Burlingame and my client is ALWAYS hustling, going to work, coming from work, empathizing with me about "being a small business owner" etct... and how hard it is to make ends meet even when hon have the best food! However, a few months ago, she showed up to my business, sandwich in hand, claiming things like "I know you don't do spicy", "I know this probably isn't something you will eat, bc you barely have an appetite for much these days", "BUT I brought you a sandwich, hope you enjoy". Believe it or lot, my all consuming life circumstance caused me to completely forget she owned a San which shop on the city, but good GOD, I was at a loss for words within seconds of taking my first bite!!!!! No joke, hands down the best sandwich I've ever got my lips on!!!! I'm saying portions, flavor, freshness of bread and all veggies, the list goes on.. I HATE that I live so far bc I can't enjoy this whenever heart desires, but shit, the city is pretty shitty these days, but I'll drive up there for food like this any day I can! Thanks Maria! You rock!!!
