We stopped by because it was very late and it was one of the few cafes open at the time. It is a small spot, and as is often the case in SF, it's easier to access by walking than by parking nearby. There is a fair amount of seating inside and it was not very busy, even on a Saturday night. The spot currently specializes in sandwiches--varieties of cheesesteak, chicken, and grilled cheese sandwiches make up the majority of the menu alongside some common sides, like fries. Prices are a bit steep and the portions seem average in size, but ordering was smooth, the food came out fast, and everything was hot and tasted good. The decor and general atmosphere feel a bit distracted and cluttered, but not in a way that detracted from my experience. I was there because it was late and I was hungry, and V Cafe fixed that. Though it doesn't necessarily shine as a star of SF, it does a great job at fulfilling its role. My burger was nothing to write home about, it was good. However can I say the fries were KRISPY just like I like them. It took me a minute to find a parking spot because of the club crowd next door. The person's working the cash register was very nice and professional; so was the security guard whom I not sure if she was part of the establishment. She was very polite and courteous. For 1130pm it was still very busy. The inside was packed, probably from the club patrons next door. Solid 3.5 stars rounded up because the service was chill and the food is not bad. They've been long standing in the area for lunch and their menu has been pretty steady. A divey spot with no frills and no public restrooms either. The pricepoint is in fair range - i think the fries were frozen and then fried for the order but the burger was cooked well and the fountain soda didn't disappoint. I can't give the full five stars because I don't ever find myself jumping at the option of coming here for a burger for lunch. Mainly due to the bread they use, I prefer a soft hoagie roll over what is essentially a harder roll they use here. I have been coming to V's cafe for years and it is a staple in the SOMA community. They are most popular for their cheese steaks. However, I love ordering their burgers. Their fries are soooo good just eating that makes me happy. The service is fairly quick if no one is there but it can get busy for lunch. I think it's amusing that I ended my first and last review of this long-standing place with: "I will have to go there sometime..." since I wrote that over 11 years ago. I was attending a music event in the area so I turned to yelp for food within walking distance that was also open a little later in the evening (9pm) and found the v cafe. There is sit down dining and a nice atmosphere for groups of 2-4. I placed my order for the sellout and the fries before arriving in the area so I didn't miss my event. I used the coupon that was available at the time and got a free can soda for exceeding a certain price amount. The sandwich had a wide range of fresh toppings with melt in your mouth deliciousness! It was large too so if filled me up to the point where I regretted the fries but still ate as much as I could with some ranch drizzled on the fries and sandwich for even more food amazingness. V Cafe's menu is filled with your typical drunchies: fries, waffle fries, chili cheese fries, mozzarella sticks, buffalo wings, grilled cheese, fried chicken, fish & chips, burgers, and foot long cheese steak sandwiches. Everything is under $13. $10 minimum for CCs. There's only a handful of tables and there's even dog-friendly outdoor seating. Though...I wouldn't want to sit outside. I ordered the Half Cheese Steak Combo with salad (or fries), and choice of drink (includes bottled water) for $10.95. I added mushrooms and extra cheese for $2. The cashier didn't ask what cheese I wanted and gave me provolone by default so make sure to request a certain cheese if you want it. A half of a cheese steak is plenty but if you're going for value, then it's worth forgoing the combo and getting a whole cheese steak for $11 and save the leftovers for another meal. The salad was fresh and topped with sliced ripen roma tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, carrots, and garbanzo beans so no complaints there. I read a lot of negative reviews for delivery. I don't understand why people order fries (or anything fried) for delivery when it's a given that it's going to arrive soggy from condensation in the box. But, hey...I've ordered $150 worth of food service at a hotel before and passed out before eating it so I'm sure they had their reasons. Overall, my meal at V Café was decent but I prefer Buster's Cheese Steaks in North Beach. If I ate my meal inebriated (like I did years ago here), I wouldn't care about the off flavor from the Asian chili sauce but I hung up my dancing shoes years ago and traded it in for granny shoes. My friends were drunk ordering the food so everything seemed pretty much the same until we asked the cashier for recommendations and went with her suggestion to order cheesesteak (which was their specialty). Guess this is the last time I'll be ordering from V cafe. Got the Po-Boy and cheese steak hoagie. Totally regretting it now, $30 down the drain. The Po-Boy consists of 6 thin pieces of fried shrimp, what seemed like a cup of tarter sauce, tomatoes and some soggy spring mix. The shrimp was sliced in half and then fried which left it thin and barely there. The tomato slices were significantly thicker than the shrimp. The sandwich may as well have been just lettuce and tarter sauce cause that's all I could taste. The steak sandwich was ok but definitely not as good as I remember. It was obvious they rushed making it and it was super soggy by the time I received it. I asked for "very light onions" but the sandwich had more onions than steak... Very disappointed. It's made with large slabs of sour dough bread, pressed so the cheese oozes out the sides, and is presented well in the box with a side of garlic waffle fries. Cheese steak sammies are absolutely huge and can definitely be shared or eaten for a couple meals. Garlic waffle fries are definitely a crowd pleaser, and they come with sides of ranch dressing and ketchup, which pleases just about everyone.
