Menu items are $2 more than listed online. They don't take reservations for parties less than 5, but as a twosome, we were sat right away at 7:30PM on a Monday. There are no soft surfaces in the restaurant to absorb sound, so it is NOT quiet; conversation is difficult. The Brussels sprout salad had crispy, warm Brussels sprouts, and cold roasted tomatoes. What a wonderful nook, tucked away in this quaint downtown. Seating is comfortable and everyone is friendly -- we made friends with the table next to us. I'm a non-cooking foodie from NYC, so when I say that The Chelsea's satisfaction of the taste buds is real competition, that's a list that extends way beyond the town. We were situated upstairs, which I've never experienced before. Our hostess was really friendly, as was our waitress. All three of us ordered the horseradish salmon. They brought us really hot rolls for the table. The salmon was juicy and flavorful. It came with a creamy rice that exploded with flavor. And the asparagus was firm, yet not undercooked. First time at The Chelsea and it did Not disappoint. I had the crab bisque and the filet. Crab bisque had a good amount of crab and Filet was cooked perfectly. Hubby had the Hangar steak and also flavorful and cooked perfectly. We had a nice bottle of Portlandia Pinot Noir which was a good choice. Service was good. I will definitely be returning. Stopped by a few months while visiting the area and this restaurant did not disappoint! We came around lunch time and grabbed a spot on the second floor. I ordered chicken and waffles which came with fries. My husband orders a burger (can't remember for the life of me which one) with Mac and cheese. Both of our meals were great! The Mac and cheese was really yummy and flavorful. He also got the South African bread which he really enjoyed for dessert. If you're visiting the area, I would highly recommend! read more

We celebrated my wife's birthday by going to the Chelsea in downtown New Bern. This was our first time here and it had been recommended to us by my wife's daughter Tammy. So, Kathey chose a side salad followed by the chicken and waffles with sautéed green beans while I picked a cup of crab soup and then the shrimp and scallops fresca with Gemelli pasta. We even got a free slice of carrot cake for Kathey's birthday. The food was great! Served hot and very flavorful. We really enjoyed our dinner and are so glad we tried this place. As soon as we arrived we were greeted and seated promptly. Our server was courteous but it was clear that she had too many tables and did her best, but not a lot of attention to detail. The menus and the tables were greasy and smudged. We ordered the crab bisque as an appetizer which was incredible. It was creamy and flavorful. Beautiful subtle flavor and full of fresh crab. I had the gemelli pasta primavera with garlic shrimp, peppers and broccolini in a cream sauce. It was fresh and tasted delicious. FRESH , which is so important. My husband had the shrimp and grits, which was delicious. The shrimp was beautifully cooked and the grits were creamy. The food was just wonderful. I would most definitely recommend that they clean the menus and tables thoroughly.. Also small appetizer dishes would be helpful at the table instead of having nowhere to put the baked rolls and pat of butter that are included with the meal. We will be back for the food. I took a group of nine for a work meal. It was warm in the restaurant. Service was really slow. I know every where is struggling, but I think at some point you manage that especially if you accept reservations. The biggest disappointment was the sea bass. It was drowning in sauce. Sea Bass shouldn't have a heavy sauce. It was also over cooked and somewhat chewy. The BBQ gravy chicken was a favorite at the table. The burger was rated meh. The sangria was ok. It took another 30-40 minutes to get our food. So we had some pretty grouchy little people. We started with the bacon wrapped scallops. I was a bit surprised to see that they were deep fried and served with drawn butter. It was cholesterol overload. I didn't like it at all. My husband enjoyed it. He ordered the scallop pasta (the lunch special), I ordered the shrimp and grits, the kids ordered pizza, a chicken basket, pasta (plain), and southern bacon cheese burger. My husband's pasta was disappointing so he ended up eating my shrimp and grits. Which was fine because I could barely eat 1/4 of it. The shrimp and grits were fantastic. I'm not going to review kids food. My sons southern bacon cheeseburger, he claims is the best burger he has ever had. He's been to many of the top gourmet burger restaurants. We're just getting to know New Bern and have been trying restaurants one-by-one. We anticipated a nice meal at this locally esteemed business, but were not prepared for the stunning quality of the food and service. Imagine biting into a raw carrot on the pimento-cheese-and-crudite platter and suddenly realizing you've never tasted as perfect a raw carrot in your life -not grainy or dry or hard to bite, but delicate, sweet, and just crisp enough! Then you think, "Can the celery be as good?" and repeat the experience as you go on to dip the vegetables and the pita slices into the delicately blended pimento cheese. We asked our server if some secret thing had been done to the vegetables, and she told us the only secret was that they were locally sourced and truly fresh. Other perfect vegetables continued throughout our meal (beautifully roasted brussel sprouts and artichokes to die for), and the cooking and spicing of each dish -from the fried green tomatoes to the shrimp and the risottos- was perfect. We were so delighted our group ended up sharing everything ("You've got to taste this!"). We had begun the meal with no intention of having dessert, but after the stunning entrees we couldn't resist indulging and treated ourselves to some additional lusciousness. Served with a lemon garlic butter. The crab dip wasn't my thing so I didn't try it, but was told it was good too. The pita points they served with were really good though! Entrees!....I got the ahi tuna appetizer as my entree which was plenty for one...with pickled cucumbers and a great wasabi, nicely seared and rare. Also on the table was the chicken bruschetta, looked amazing! My friend said it was great. Then we has the paella risotto. Plenty of veggies and shrimp and chicken and sausage, looked so colorful. Great seasoning. The crab cakes, were huge, and came with asparagus and rice pilaf. Again great dish. Dessert, hard to decide as so many great choices. But went with the Carolina mud pie. Wife said, we have not been to Chelsie is sometime let's go and I said great. My wife had a salad with Mahi and I had Swordfish with carrots and rice. My wife's would have been good if we left off the Mahi, dry as day old bread ! My Swordfish was very fishy/strong tasting and Google says "Swordfish is a mild fish for people who may not be used to eating fish" On the upside the rolls were good and service.
