Great food and decent prices with a very pleasant and attentive staff. I got the ribeye with candied bacon and it was delicious, along with the garlic 'smashed' potatoes and vegetables. The steak was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful. I didn't think I'd ever taste anything better than the candied bacon, Gorgonzola and sauce on top of the steak, but then I tried the mashed potatoes which were incredible!! The Chelsea is a great little place in the great little historic town of New Bern. A very old town settled by Swiss and Germans that is full of quaint shops and eateries. Nice atmosphere with dining upstairs and on the street level. Full bar, with (delish) craft cocktails and craft beers. They only take large reservations and there can be a wait on a weekend. The staff is very efficient and friendly, although the hostesses on a recent Saturday night did not seem trained too well. Nonetheless, the real reason to stop in is that the food is very good. Prices may be a bit high for the locals, but being from NJ, they were very good for the quality of the food and with good portions = VALUE!! Although not huge, the menu is loaded with a lot of great choices. Apps Fried Green Tomatoes with sliced buffalo mozzarella, mixed baby greens and pear -basil pesto was very good. I'd have it again. And their "famous" cream of crab soup was Top Notch! (wish I had a bowl now) Entrees Zucchini, squash, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and carrots tossed with garlic, basil, olive oil, lemon zest and gemelli pasta was "ok". More of a safe choice. We ate here this evening with friends and had a wonderful experience! My husband had the brown butter chicken, I had the special of shrimp and scallops over Gouda cheese grits, and we shared artichoke dip and calamari with friends. The food was delicious and we were totally impressed! I only knocked one star off as our server was pretty dry- the bus boy was 150x more personable than our server! Totally wish he could have served us instead! read more

The inside of this place is a little cramped but they have ample outdoor seating. We ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. They were served with mozzarella on top and were delicious. I ordered the Brown Butter Barbecue Chicken. As soon as I saw that it was served over grits I was sold. They chicken was so tender and juicy. It was slightly spicy in areas where the spices were heavy. The brown butter gravy on top was so good especially mixed with the creamy grits. I wish I could eat it everyday of my life. My little sister ordered the vegetable risotto. It was filled with squash, zucchini, mushrooms and peppers aka the best vegetables they could have used for a risotto. It was so delicious and I kept stealing bites of her dinner. This place had the best food i've had in a long time. I will definitely be back when i come to the area again. read more

Great place for lunch or dinner. We ate at their bar but their dining area is a white tablecloth classy place. It is located right on the corner of their downtown area near city hall. I had Shrimp and Grits snd Mike had their Crab Bisque soup. Mike has eaten here often and never had a bad meal. This is certainly a place we will go to again. read more

Of course a stop at The Chelsea was on our list of places to eat in New Bern. It was incredible. We had the ginger mahi & plain filet. They were out of the "bleu" for the bleu fillet, which was disappointing, but my husband enjoyed the filet just the same. No wonder this place is so popular, it's incredible & we'll be back some day read more

The Chelsea is a New Bern must! Set in the old original Pepsi bottling factory. Lots of history and beautiful architecture. I recommend the filet mignon or the New Orleans pasta. I and several friends have celebrated birthdays and special occasions. Wait staff are always friendly and kind and we're kind enough to give me a birthday treat. The peanut butter brownie is to die for! Absolutely delicious! read more

I want to amend a previous review from a month ago. I tried a ribeye again because the toppings sounded delicious again, and they were. This time I ordered it rare because if they got it off one way or another, I would be fine with almost raw, or medium rare. It was a PERFECT rare. The toppings were as astounding with it as I thought they would be. And I preferred the sides with a different special and they accommodated it. A wonderful dinner. read more

The short of it: My wife and I stopped in for lunch on our weekend trip to New Bern and were very pleasantly surprised. We ordered a few of the classics - crab cake, shrimp & grits, and a pimento cheese appetizer. Everything was excellent in its simplicity. I would (and have since) highly recommend The Chelsea. The long of it: We started with a pimento cheese appetizer. Perhaps the only disappointment of the meal was what we received for our $9.50. It was a scoop of pimento in a ramekin, served with some veggies and some (admittedly) delicious bread points. Presentation was a little underwhelming for the price, but taking that out of the equation, it was good. The crab cake had an excellent ratio of crab to filler - just enough to hold it all together. It is offered either grilled or fried. We opted for fried. It was light and not at all bready or greasy. It was served with a remoulade sauce that was tasty but not at all necessary because the crab cake was so good on its own. It also came with a side of rice and sautéed veggies. The star of the show was the shrimp & grits. My wife and I like to share, and we definitely fought over this dish. I typically don't order food that I can make myself at home, but this dish put mine to shame. There was nothing overly-fancy about it, but you can tell that this dish had been perfected over many years to the point where it has me reconsidering my life choices and how I prepare my own at home. The simple sausage was thinly sliced and added just the right amount of smokiness. The grits were fine-ground and perfectly creamy. The shrimp was cooked to the perfect translucence, and the mushrooms were a nice touch. Their preparation of this dish harkens back to the origins of shrimp & grits as a simple dish using simple ingredients, but masterfully prepared. All in all, we will be back to explore more of the menu, and we will continue to recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for excellent preparation of the southern coastal classics. read more

We went to the Chelsea on December 26th and we were so grateful they were open on that busy night. The food is what I would call down home cooking. Not fancy but very flavorful and delicious. I had the crab cake and my husband had the salmon. Great food with a relaxed atmosphere. read more

Food was pretty good, little pricey for what you're getting but it was well cooked and tasted fresh, so I'm not complaining. If I spend more and get a good portion size of food that tastes good, i am happy. I ordered soup and a salad, and the soup was yummy. I asked which dressings were made in house for my salad and to my surprise the waitress said all of them were, I got blue cheese and it tasted great. If I'm visiting new bern again I will definitely stop here for a bite and a drink. read more

As soon as you walk inside you are greeted by a friendly staff and surrounded by a cozy atmosphere. They offer outside seated for Friday & Saturday evenings- however make sure to call ahead for reservations to sit outside. They offer bar seating, 1st floor seating, 2nd floor seating and a banquet hall upstairs for events. Noted that they have an elevator for accessibility with additional bathrooms upstairs. Appetizer: The potstickers were fried, flavorful, and delicious! The dipping dipping sauce was a great addition to the potstickers. Entree: Bacon Wrapped Filet special was delicious with the garlic mashed potatoes! It also came with sautéed mushrooms and asparagus which were all delectable. My friends loved the Candied Bacon Ribeye and the kids seemed to enjoy the chicken fingers with fries. The positive: great atmosphere. Tasty warm free rolls for the table. So many options on the menu! Great service by Katie for our group. The negative: The ticket time was well over an hour due to the dinner rush. The seafood paella was average with very minimal flavor and overpriced for the few pieces of seafood. Overall I would come back to try other items on the menu and their desserts. read more

The place is absolutely charming and in a charming city. The hostess was nice and that's about where it stopped for the staff. The service was dreadful and slow. The server should not be a server, especially in such a cute place like this. The food was reasonable and tasty. There were six of us and we each ordered a different entree and there were a few appetizers as well. The food varied from good to excellent. My family recently had a luncheon for 60 people at the Chelsea. We are not from New Bern and had no idea where to find a venue with very short notice. After getting a recommendation for the Chelsea. We decided to go with it. Our experience was all around an A+!! The owner was such a pleasure to work with. He came up with a menu that was both delicious and affordable. They had the room set up beautifully with flowers on the tables (which we hadn't even requested). The staff and service were amazing!!! We had more people than expected and as we ran out of food, without being asked, the owner had more food prepared. If/when we are ever back in New Bern, I plan to eat at the restaurant and would definitely host another luncheon there if need be. We can't thank you enough for making an incredibly difficult day, a little sweeter! read more

I had the braised pork cheeks. They tasted good and were not fatty at all. Looking back on our dinner, the food was fine but nothing exceptional. Also nothing "fresh" on the menu; salad, fresh vegetables, nothing. Also the lack of something other than the very pedestrian offers to share is something to consider. For what we paid, I would expect much better. PS - Our waiter, Beckett, was very good. Attentive enough but not too much. Also, why do restaurants of this caliber charge more for a credit card. Who is going to pay cash for a $300 meal? Just crank it into the price of the food and stop rubbing our noses in your cost to do business.

This was the first place we checked out when we moved to New Bern, and have since been there a couple of times. The menu has a good variety and they have specials every day that sell out quickly. Our first time there, we went for lunch and I had the shrimp and grits which they are known for, and yum yum! So good! The grits were cheesy and creamy, and the shrimp was spiced perfectly and accompanied with onions, and veggies. My boyfriend had a Cajun pasta that was so ridiculously flavorful and loaded with seafood! It had shrimp, scallops, and a seasoning that made my mouth literally water. So good, I kept stealing bites! We also shared duck spring rolls for an appetizer and they were a delightful treat! And do yourself a favor and order the French Onion Soup! You get a vat of it and it covered with delicious melted cheese and croutons. Mmmmmm. We've been back since and went for dinner. We had delicious wine from their extensive list and a couple Old Fashioned's. The steak is yummy, and so is the horseradish crusted salmon! The Chelsea is one of my favorite local places to eat. The atmosphere, the food, and the service are all superb. The Hamburger Salad is my favorite thing to have--seriously, you have to try it, but everything is good. Expect above-average drink prices, and you won't get sticker shock when you see your bill. There are more expensive places in town for that. The range of drink choices is pretty good. I've never had any complaints with The Chelsea. I always recommend it to strangers and take out-of-town guests to enjoy some local fare. Only expect great views if you're upstairs, but it's a fun place to go that isn't loud--you can actually have a conversation there and enjoy your food and drinks in a cool, old-fashioned drug store setting. read more

Me and my fiancee come here a few times out of the year and each time has been better than the last, if you have a few bucks extra to throw into a fine dining experience, then go here. The wait staff is extremely professional and courteous. The food is exactly what you pay for, I recommend the New Orleans pasta if you're a fan of shrimp and or scallops. Also the calamari is top notch, we order it every time we're here, crispy, and somehow melts in your mouth at the same time. The atmosphere is just calming and for people like me, it's a plus. What an absolutely Great Restaurant! Our ship's reunion (USS Corry DD/DDR 817) was held in New Bern in May 2019. Included in the tour by New Bern Trolley was a luncheon at The Chelsea. The food and service were excellent and the management couldn't have been more accommodating for our 80 plus guests. In planning for our reunion I had visited New Bern and had lunch at the Chelsea to sample the menu, service, quality, etc., and this visit made me choose Chelsea. I was lucky to find this restaurant in the quaint little town of New Bern. They were packed. However, after a few minutes, I found a spot at the bar. The steak and shrimp looked amazing and I was ready for a great dinner. I was not disappointed. My steak was cooked perfectly, and the goat cheese added a creamy, unique flavor profile. Our Society used the Chelsea to cater our conference in February 2013. They handled the majority of our meals, and the food was fabulous. Chris and his staff are friendly and great to work with, and our conference attendees raved about the quality and taste of the food. They've owned several…read morerestaurants over the decades with the same "home cooked" type meals that can be eaten by young and old alike. Nothing fancy, nothing overly spicy, just plain good food. Children would especially enjoy some of the selections. The atmosphere and aroma may have a "bar" twinge because some people use it as a bar, so you'll have wet floors in the bathroom sometimes at night. This smell is hard to cover so, you'll have to deal with that, maybe. The selections my wife enjoy most are: the Hot Hamburger Plate, Hamburger Steak (both with onions and mushrooms added to the gravy for $1 extra), Shrimp & Scallops and BBQ Baby Back Ribs. The sides are less impressive, but if you know what to order, you get extract some great veggies. The mashed potatoes are REAL potatoes (not instant) and taste great (don't add salt before eating). The steamed Broccoli is excellent and is the only other vegetable I get with my meals. The Baked Potato is nominal and French fries are frozen crinkle cuts. My wife use to get the baked beans but they were discontinued. I order with my cell phone from my truck on my way home. I go to the back "take out" entrance. There is a camera with closed circuit television that they can see your vehicle with. (I never sit down to eat) Therefore I can't really comment on the service or the sanitary conditions. The place use to have more employees and they had a register w/cashier next to the back entrance. This dedicated position in now usually the responsibility of the head waitress at the bar. Since she is busy serving drinks or doubling as the main check tallying station for other waitresses,...I usually just go inside to pay for the meal rather than wait for her to come out to my truck. If it's gonna be a little while (if it's very busy, wait times can be longer) I'll sit outside and wait. She brings it out cheerfully and I always give a nice 15-20% tip. (even though she didn't really wait on me but once) I find it makes me feel good. The prices are quite reasonable if not a bargain compared to some other places. Expect to pay $10-$14 per plate, but sometimes small plates on special can be under $7. Within the last two years, I've seen the Hot Hamburger Plate be on special for $5.99. Ask for the specials of the day, there are usually two or three.
