The Good: Arrive b4 9pm and avoid the cover charge...since the bands are not really good enough to pay for. Shoot pool until music starts. Dance and rub up against hot chix as they stumble around drunk prepping for their friends' weddings. It is like any drunken fraternity party you have ever attended. The Bad: Music is always too loud, so wear ear plugs. Those new disco laser lights they added hit you square in the eyes...very irritating. Always hot, skanky humid in there, so wear shorts and Tshirt. The Great: I was in there Sat night and saw some 40 yr old wallet from NY with his 6' tall 24 yr old rocketship Victoria Secret model girlfriend......and she was NOT even the hottest chick in the bar. Located on the interior of the island, this place is technically walk-able from town, but we seemed to be the only people doing it. If I went back, I'd take a cab. A typical young, rowdy bar. Live music, cheap drinks and a patio where smoking is permitted. read more

If you want to see a band while you're in ACK, then you have to hit The Box. We check what the lineup will be on our vacation before we leave so we know which nights to go. It's a dive, a small intimate venue, the staff has always been friendly, and if someone good is playing, it's PACKED. We went way early last year because we wanted to watch a big Sox game and ended up hanging with the staff and a smattering of locals doing the same - it was great. I was lucky enough to see Joshua Tree (U2 cover band) two years in a row at The Box...hmmm, maybe next vacay should be planned based on when they're on the island. ;-) read more

I like the Box, and will go on record as saying it's probalby my favorite on the island. It can get crowded, for sure. There is a certain mystique about this place, as it has been rumored that many great bands will randomly show up and play here during the summer months. There are some pool tables, as well as great live entertainment. The line can get up to the 2 hour mark during the summer, which stinks because I think it closes at 1AM (maybe 2?). Worth visiting if you're on Nantucket wondering where to go for a good time. Classic place to see the popped collar crowd wearing sunglasses at night. Gotta love it! read more

The Box is such a fixture of the Nantucket scene. Worlds collide: locals, the preppy summer crowd and a surprisingly large hippie scene that crawls out of the woodwork too. It does turn into a meatmarket around 1:00, but what good, crowded island bar doesn't? They always have fun music and dancing, and there are plenty of games to entertain as well (including pool and erotic photo hunt). It's cash only, but they do have an ATM inside. read more

The Chicken Box peaks on Saturday night at the Figawi. Be sure to get there pretty early (730-830) because beyond this the line will be insane. For a bar that gets pretty packed, it is not too hard to get a drink. At the Figawi my friends said they have never seen hotter girls, and we all had a great time. Definitely do not miss this bar on Memorial Day weekend. During the summer it is supposed to be a great time as well. Also, my friend left his tab open so we rode our bikes over the next day and ended up talking to the owner/manager, Rocky, and he was a real nice guy. Came here while on vacation to try something different for a night out. Ive seen just about every type of bar and this is definitely a dive. I can appreciate an island bar when there's at least one thing going for it. BUT BOUNCER: innapropriate, uncomfortable comments DRINKS: cheap (reason for 1 star) LOCATION: kind of sucks, but not too out of the way GIRLS: trashy definitely- drinks flying around as night went on GUYS: touchy, aggressive The final straw for me was when a MOUSE ran across the floor. I used to love the box, until this past Sunday July 3rd. I waited in a ridiculous 1/2 hour to pay $40 for entry for 2 of us. There were not turning any people away, they were just draggin their feet in selling admission to their illegally overcroweded bar. Worse, I paid $40 for the opportunity to wait over another 20 minutes at bar to obtain 4 of the worst drinks I have ever seen. The bartender was pouring their liquor upside down in the cups and completely missed the last cup. The 1st 3 cups had almost no alcohol in them...he seemed happy enough to fill my drinks with juice. When I asked him to top off the drinks with alcohol, he refused even though he knows we waited both at his bar and in line to get those $35 in drinks. In summery I spent $75 and an HOUR to get into a bar and 4 awful drinks. I don't mind that the place is a dumb where it's probably easy to catch an infection or die, I understand the risks...in exchange for fun...but I was no longer having fun in an overcrowded sweat diseases infested box cased in with chicken wire and my $75 of bad time drinks! YUCK....it might have been fun in the past however the box has lost it's ability to have fun while being stupid. The still corporate greed of this biz cut out the fun to maximize their own cash register while patrons waiting for their fun are overcharged and underdelivered....booo on uuuuuuu - IDIOTS! read more

Went here when I came into town with some guys who were in the airshow in '06. We got them to let us in for free. Seemed like a college type bar to me, but it was a cool place. The only too bad part is that it is not downtown. Five stars for being a dive bar on Nantucket, which overall was a 5/5 place. read more

all I can say is.... we waited in line for almost an hour, paid $20 to get in and then had to wait almost the same amount of time for a drink. The barstaff was rude. If I could give a ZERO star, I would. I was served by 4 different bartenders. I was given a bill that was WELL OVER what I drank. I got free tickets to a concert, from the band that was playing this week, and was literally physically removed from the show at the end of the night because they over charged me, and I complained. If you complain at #TheBox, they'll physically remove you. Apparently Rocky Fox, from The Box has the power to overcharge you, along with physically removing his patrons, and being completely disrespectful in the process. Along with ALL THE B.S.....THE BATHROOMS SMELL LIKE CAT PISS. NOBODY CLEANS A DAMN THING THERE. I will absolutely never return to this bar again. I spend too much money on this island to be screwed over for a bar tab. I know too many people on this island to lie about a bar tab. This place was awful! Came to visit for the weekend and was told to go to the infamous Chicken Box. The bouncer was extremely rude and made uncomfortable comments while the crowd inside was less than inviting. No music and not a fun atmosphere. Congratulations, Chicken Box! You're now 4-for-4 with 1-star reviews this year! The Chicken Box employs either one of the world's most careless bartenders or one of the world's dumbest petty thieves. I was charged THREE TIMES in one night there this summer--yup, in 2016 when most people make electronic purchases with credit/debit cards that are easily traceable. Fortunately, one of those erroneous charges never cleared my pending transactions, but the other phony one did & had a tip added to it--apparently the bartender rewards himself a tip for unauthorized, fraudulent use of bar patrons' cards. When I found out, I brought it to the attention of the Box's management, gave them a chance to admit to the mistake, and allowed them the opportunity of correcting it in order to save face and restore integrity. They failed--miserably. When I called to settle it, the bartender instructed me to find the manager Packy Norton's e-mail address from the bar's website to clear it up--so I did. No luck. Packy was useless and didn't respond, thus enabling this type of criminal activity to take place at his bar. I called a total of FIVE times, and e-mailed Packy THREE times, and got nowhere. Then I decided to get my bank's fraud team involved to investigate, and luckily they ended up getting my money back (thanks TD!). Apparently this petty criminal activity is increasingly common at the Box, & unfortunately it's happened to others as well--James C. from NY, for example, was charged twice in a similar instance, as evidenced from his 8/19/2016 Yelp review. Pathetic. Avoid this bar at all costs or it could cost YOU! There are many other bars on the island that don't steal from patrons. And here's a nickel's worth of free advice to the Chicken Box: I don't know much about scamming people, but fraudulently swiping your customers' cards multiple times in a desperate attempt to increase profits will get you caught. read more

fun place, cheap beers, loud music. but if the line is more than 30 people long, don't go. because you will never get in...unless its 5 minutes before closing time--but they won't tell you that & still collect your cover fee before you enter. it's the classic Nantucket hole-in-the-wall bar that you have to go to at least once just to say "I've been to the Chicken Box." read more
