Just got back from having lunch here. I stopped by on a whim after passing it by several times. A colleagues recommendation is what sealed the deal. The service was great! I informed my server that this was my first time dining in their establishment, and my first experience with peruvian food to begin with. She was quite helpful in going over the day's specials and pointed out some of her favorite dishes from the menu. I ended up getting "the beloved dish" which was a beef dish, with tomatoes, peppers, onions and french fries all mixed with a white wine and soy sauce, served with white rice. She suggested I try it with chicken and gave me the option for white or dark meat. As I waited, she brought out a quarter of the house chicken with their spicy sauce, on the house, so I could try their specialty. The spice rub on the chicken was definitely latin influenced, but a different nuance than I had ever tried. Their spicy sauce was a perfect accent, not overwhelming at all. My entree was also quite good. I left very satisfied and had only spent $10. I can't recommend this place enough and will definitely be bringing my friends and family back to try out all the different flavors! read more

There is rotisserie chicken, and then there is chicken so good you find your inner carnivore awakened - digging into the bird like you've never experienced. Add two unique dips, savory yellow rice, plantains?! And you have hands down the best family restaurant in the Newark, De area. We can't get enough. I just started working in Newark, DE and The Chicken House was recommended to me by a coworker. I really enjoyed it! It was my first time eating Peruvian food so I went with a safe bet and order the 1/4 chicken with rice lunch special. It also came with a small side salad and soft drink. The 1/4 chicken was just the right size for me! The entire dish was very flavorful. I also loved the spicy sauce they had on the side. I poured it over the rice and chicken. I stand by this: I don't have to know how to cook Peruvian chicken to know what's in my mouth is GOOD. I've been here probs half a dozen times. It never fails to split a half rotisserie chicken with my boyfriend on a plate of fries with a pre-meal salad. Definitely remember to ask for extra yellow and green sauces. The yellow has a creamier, swifter kick. And if the yellow isn't enough dare yourself to ask for the red. That one's hott. Skip the side of plantains, they don't come out sweet or crispy. They were like mushed thick plantain chips with an AWESOME minced garlic chutney. All in all plan to spend under $20 (including tip) for a meal for two here. read more

Considering my lack of familiarity with Peruvian cuisine, aside from the single encounter while frequenting DC; my experiences dining at this restaurant have been very positive. Despite the Peruvian restaurant down the street, peruchos getting a better review this place is far better and way more authentic. My favorite dish is the pork chops served with rice and fried eggs. The pork is always cooked just right and the fried eggs over rice is perfect. You can never go wrong with the chicken its always juicy and marinated just right and is relatively cheap for a whole chicken. They also make a spicy yellow sauce that goes great with any meat they serve. If are stuck on a drink get and have never tried Inca cola I highly recommend it since your not going to find it in many places. Place is great for take out just buy a whole chicken for $10 and you have a family dinner that nobody will be disappointed with. read more

The Chicken House is a terrific restaurant serving delicious Peruvian style food. The staff is friendly and service is good. For an appetizer, try the Calamares Fritos con Salsa Criolla (fried calamari). It is some of the best I have had anywhere. Fresh, crisp and with a lot of flavor. I highly recommend the Parihuela which is their delicious seafood combination soup. Full of fresh seafood in a delicious fish stock. You won't be disappointed. The house salad dressing is a homemade cucumber dressing that is light, refreshing and delicious. The signature go to meal of course is their Peruvian Rotisserie style chicken. The chickens are plump, moist, tender, and full of flavor. Absolutely delicious! The dipping sauce provided for the chicken is a bit spicy without being overpowering and adds to the delicious favor of the meal. If you like rice, try the Porción de arroz (yellow rice). It is one of my favorite side dishes. Moist, flavorful and a perfect compliment to the chicken. I Highly recommend The Chicken House! read more

Tried out a few dishes. The chicken was REALLY tasty!!!!!! Also had the Jalea, which was a fried seafood mix, was OK. Tried the chicken soup with rice, and we were surprised to find that it was green! A little bit weird tasting, but you could get used to it. The Pisco Sour was really great as well. read more

Very good food. The chicken is wonderful. We also had a stuffed baked potato and it was very tasty. The yellow sauce is very spicy but good. The house salad is just ok, lots of iceberg lettuce but green dressing very refreshing. Motzeralla sticks were average, very chewy. Prices are very reasonable and service good. We've been to the Chicken House a few times and I've always thought it was one of the hidden treasures of Northern Delaware. We took a group of seven to the restaurant tonight and after waiting for about five minutes for the only table large enough for a group our size, it was a ten minute wait before our server took our order. Six members of our group ordered the rotisserie chicken, while I ordered one of the Peruvian meat dishes. After another ten minutes, and before our drinks came, our server returned to our table with "bad news"... the Chicken House had run out of rotisserie chickens! She explained that since the chickens take three hours to cook, they have to estimate in advance how many chickens will be needed in any given evening. Tonight, a Saturday evening at 7pm, they ran out. We were given the option of ordering something else off the menu, but by then six of us were not prepared to settle for our "second choice". After a brief discussion with the staff (who offered nothing more than an apology) explaining our disappointment, we left the restaurant and went somewhere else. It will probably be a little while before we return to the Chicken House. Before we do, we will call ahead to make sure that they have chicken. read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars. Thanks for the food poisoning you gave my fiancée. He was ill all night from about two hours after eating until the morning. I had to take him to the urgent care center and get a prescription filled just to keep water in and not dehydrate. I would not recommend. It is quite a shame, since we both really liked this place. I can assure you he won't be eating here again after what he endured (and is still enduring). I won't be able to go because of what I watched from my fiancée. A word to management: please don't reply to this asking me to contact you so you can make it right. This is not fixable. Word of advice: make sure you rotate food, ensure your employees cook to safe temperatures, and throw away spoiled ingredients! read more

What happened to the really good grilled chicken.? This is the second time that I have gone back to try the grilled chicken and found the white meat to be mealy and dry with absolutely none of the grilled taste that it used to have. Besides the texture of the meat being off the overall flavor was just so-so. The yellow rice was as good as ever. They have other good Peruvian dishes but I can no longer recommend them for the grilled chicken. read more

I tried the 1/4 chicken. The chicken was very good but not much of it. Chicken is on the small side. It came with yellow rice which was very tasty and a generous portion. It just was the majority of the food and I really didn't like filling up on rice. It also came with a salad and a fountain soda. I really did not want either. I am used to being able to get 2 sides of my choice with a number of selections. This had neither. I will not be going back. read more

Stopped in with a date to try things out. We got the Shrimp ceviche`. My date was a little dubious, as never having seen ceviche` offered as a platter. It was served with an onion salad and a couple pf potatoes. It was really good. We had this and a couple of beers and went on our way for the night. Both times I've eaten at The Chicken House my chicken has been absolutely unseasoned. It looks attractive but tastes extremely plain, like there is not even enough salt on it. I don't understand all the rave reviews. The aji, which you have to request specifically (was it just my Anglo looking face?) was very good. Maybe the correct way is just to completely smother the chicken in aji? The yuca fries that came with it were well cooked but again could have used a little more salt. This last visit, we also ordered the aguadito de mariscos and the ceviche mixto. Both seemed to use the same "seafood mix" which was a little rubbery but ok. The flavor and the whitefish were actually very good in the ceviche, so I think I would just get plain ceviche if I returned. The soup is cilantro-based but tastes like the cilantro has been in the freezer. Overall, I'd say The Chicken House is passable but would really benefit from using fresher ingredients and more seasoning. read more

With improved interior decor from the previous establishment, The Chicken House is inviting from the first step in the door. The staff quickly seat you at your choice of the bar or dining area. I had the half chicken, but because I like dark meat especially, our waitress Bernice made sure I had ONLY dark meat... enough to equal a normal half chicken! Delicious! I had the opportunity to try this hidden gem last week, and boy was I surprised! The owner and her family were working in the kitchen that night, and they definitely made our experience even better. Friendliest family ever, and gave amazing recommendations. I had the half chicken with rice and bean sides. I read another review on here where they were complaining about "running out of chicken." Hey at least you know it's made right there on the spot! You can definitely tell the quality ingredients that go into this meal. First time eating here and I was pleasantly surprised. The decor was pleasant inside and very clean. I was a little wary because of the strip mall location, but everything was great. I had a lovely cilantro soup and a half chicken platter. The portion sizes were great and I have another meal for later. I also loved their yellow sauce which was full of flavor. We had the yuca a la huancaina which was very tasteful. A side of chicken wings that were very tasty too. The Pescado a lo pobre testes good but we thought it was a small portion. Never too much of a good thing: I always have their pollo a la brasa con arroz amarillo y ensalada. The yellow sauce is the main reason why I go; it makes everything taste even more flavorful. I've had Papa A La Huancaina which is good. The maracuya is perfect with just the right amount of sweetness and natural flavor. This is my go-to spot to eat well and affordable. My only complaint is dessert because it's not fresh-made; they just pull it out of a small fridge for you. I would walk over to Ole Tapas instead for that. read more

I love their food. Simple and plain lol. I have been eating here since they first opened. Their food was soo yummy that they have opened two locations. It makes me happy that they are doing so well. When I dine here I love to get their chicken with yellow rice and fries. The chicken is always tender and juicy. It is seasoned correctly and never disappoints. The fries are regular French fries but always hot and fresh. The rice is flavorful and cooked to perfection. I've gotten other meals on the menu. All very yummy. I love the papa ala guancaina which is potatoes with a mild spicy sauce. Their salchi papa is simple yet yummy. It's fries and hotdog but great for the kids or as an appetizer. Their soda Inca Cola is also great. I have to say I've never had a bad experience. The staff is always super friendly and actually seem happy to see you. The locations are both good. One is bigger than the other. But still both produce such yummy foods!!! I obviously recommend lol. read more

This review is long overdue. I worked close by this restaurant and ate there every week for two years. The food is delicious and easy on the wallet. I recommend the Lomo Saltado, Jalea, and half chicken meal with rice. Extra Aji sauce is recommended also, I don't know what they put in it but it adds incredible flavor to any dish they serve it with. read more

Peruvian Pollo a la Braza trumps plain old rotisserie chicken any day of the week, and The Chicken House in Newark, DE does a great job of it. The chicken is juicy and full of flavor and is a delight served with thick cut fries and aji amarillo (peruvian yellow chile sauce). This is another place that makes living in the Big D just that much better. I have tried their lomo saltado, which was tasty but not out of this world.
