The Chimes is a nice place. It's big and has a big bar with a lot of different beers. The food has been OK for me, the service is another story. A friend and I met up here to drink some beer. We had been there about an hour and a half I guess when we suddenly started feeling pressured to leave as they were getting busier. We hadn't received good service all along. The bartenders were unfriendly to us and we had to wait for refills. Anyway, we decided to go. My friend didn't leave a tip due to the service we received and for them trying to push us out. She wrote a big 0 on the tip line of the receipt. The next day my friend calls me up and says you'll never guess what happened. She had checked her bank account and noticed she had been charged $5 more than what her bill was. The bartender had added an extra $5 for her tip since my friend had not left one. Maybe she thought we were drunk and would not notice. Unbelievable. So she calls and talks to the manager and was offered a $25 gift card to make up for this. Nothing happened to the bartender. I wish I could remember her name. I think she went by a nickname that wasn't actually her name. Anyway, you might want to pay attention to your bill and what you are actually charged if you sit at the bar. read more

The food is just ok. Nothing really worth mentioning. Martinis used to be fantastic, but they stopped carrying the white cranberry juice. Also the font have the martini menu any longer. The legendary LSU restaurant/bar has opened a North Shore location and it's as awesome as the original! It also just happens to be one of the nicer pubs in Covington. As this is the Chimes I'll start with the beer. Excellent selection of drafts from around the world. In fact, you can go Around the World. How does one do this you ask? Well, if you drink 60 different beers from at least 20 different countries within a 6 month time frame, not to exceed 5 beers within any one 24 hour period, you, my friend, have been around the world! What does one get for this? A tee shirt AND your name will appear on a plaque inside the restaurant for all eternity. Yes, something your mother can be proud of. While I am at it the food here isn't bad at all. Excellent burgers. The blackened salmon Cesare salad rocks. The barbecued shrimp poboy is excellent. The gumbo can hold its own against any other casual restaurant around. Oh, and the boudin balls are among the best out there. Seriously folks, those boudin balls rock! Of course the North Shore location will never have the full charm of the original but it does have the best deck in Covington (if the weather is nice go for it). Also, as this place is still quite new there are a few service issues to be worked out but they are minor. Bottom line: welcome to the North Shore, Chimes! read more

Last night on a whim, Vicky L and I sped over the causeway to hassle John LH in his home digs in Covington. Boy was this place backed for Valentine's Day. Luckily, John & his friends had secured seats at the bar which they turned over to us latecomers...who were starving. We ordered 4 dishes: shrimp & grits, gumbo, fried crawfish salad, and mac-n-cheese. All were really delish. The remoulade dressing on my salad was nice & spicy; the crawfish were well cooked and the rest of the salad was fresh if a bit boring. But c'mon I ordered it for the fried crawfish. The mac-n-cheese side was a nice sized portion for $3.50 and would make a meal for a child. I snuck some of Vicky's shrimp & grits and they were tasty. Interestingly, the dish was served with a wedge of grit cake rather than the usual fresh grits. And interesting twist. Lots of beers on tap of course, and I was impressed with the bourbon selection. The staff was lovely...even after some ass clownery (by our companions...never me & Vicky). Bonus points for the awesome mullet we witnessed further down the bar. read more

The Chimes is a very cool place. I went here with a couple of my favorite Yelpers and we had a fantastic time. It was packed but we still were able to be seated without a wait in the beautiful upstairs dining area. Awesome. We went on an afternoon while LSU was playing and the football game was on every television. Very awesome. The beer selection is one of the most extensive I've ever seen. How very awesome. You get the point. The Chimes is completely freaking awesome. I had a BBQ shrimp poboy. It wasn't the traditional version of the sandwich, so I was a little disappointed because I was expecting something different. Their version is fried and while it was good, it just wasn't what I expected. I had a fruity beer (because I'm a girl:). Cant' really complain about the quality of the food or the service, but the thing that killed it for me was the employees smoking on the exterior dining deck. It's not very often that we are able to have a meal outside in south Louisiana, but on the rare occasion when the weather is cooperating we like to enjoy dining outdoors, if the restaurant has outdoor dining areas. We were seated at our table in the middle of the exterior deck. There was only one other occupied table near us. Right after we ordered our drinks a young lady wearing her Chimes workclothes took a seat at a table at the extreme end of the deck and proceeded to chain-smoke cigarettes one after another. I asked the server if smoking was allowed in the area and I was given an indecipherable non-answer. The employee continued smoking with her legs resting on another chair chatting away on her cell phone while her smoke drifted over our table. As we were exiting to our car, I noticed other employees smoking on the end of the building around the corner from where the first young lady was lounging and smoking in plain view of the customers. I'm pretty sure this is the area where she was supposed to be taking her break. It'll be a good while before we return and I can guarantee we'll never use the outdoor dining area again. read more

I came here with several friends for lunch. We split several appetizers plates so I got to try the hush puppies (OK), crab fingers (OK), the crabmeat stuffed mushrooms (which I really liked) and the boudin balls (which were interesting). Chimes was offering a luncheon steak special. I wasn't hungry enough for a steak so I followed the advice from some Yelp reviews and ordered the Chimes club with grilled chicken. I didn't catch the part about the chicken breast when I ordered. So when the waitress asked me if I wanted it grilled, fried, or blackened, I had no idea what she was talking about... How do you "blacken" a club sandwich? Oh, OK, I'll have the chicken grilled. Several friends ordered the steak special. I was glad I had skipped as I wasn't too impressed with it. For a lunch and the price, it was acceptable. Another friend had the Boca burger which is a meatless patty. She said she's had better but at least they offered the option and didn't have to settle for a salad. We were upstairs and I could look out the windows and see the woods in the background. Nice view. The restaurant was busy for lunch and noisy as a result. I wonder what it would be like for a Saints or LSU game? There were 3 TVs and you could see 2 from about any vantage point in the room. Their beer selection looked great. I settled on a Dark Side of the Moon (Guinness and Blue Moon). Not quite a Black and Tan, but good. Service was good. read more

My favorite bars generally tend to be older places with character and history but the Covington Chimes is possibly my favorite shiny new bar I've been to in the Greater New Orleans Area and probably my favorite bar in Covington. This is a large place with a large back patio, dining area and impressive horseshoe shaped bar. The food is probably a bit more consistent at the original Chimes in Baton Rouge but the Chimes in Covington is clearly the winner in any contest about which is the better bar. read more

It was my birthday dinner. We waited an hour to get in which was normal because it was so packed. We get seated and it takes 30 minutes to get a server to our table in which we order raw oysters and our meals. The RAW oysters take over an hour to get to our table and the actual meals took about 2 hours from ordering. How is this normal? I am reading all these reviews, good & bad . It's confusing because the reviews are either glowing positive or extremely negative . So what could be going on ? 1st beer mugs should be cold.. period as beer in a warm just washed mug won't be cold long. Food MUST be consistently good !!! MUST ! Staff should mot be hanging out laughing and talking when there are customers waiting for food or for orders to be taken, or receive their bill, or how about just checking in on customers for refills, update status of food, etc. Where are the managers ? Who trained the slackers ? Who checks on if chefs for updates and gibes them a little encouragement ? After all it is the food they come there for first, service second, price & atmosphere. I'd probably give Chimes three stars and not four if it weren't for the beauty of the location. To be fair, the service was good, too, when my book club met here on Saturday. The only dings, really, were that I didn't love my laginappe sandwich as much as I thought I would and I thought my drink was a bit weak. The sandwich was still good, though, just not as good as I was thinking. The fries were just average fries. The drink was my fault for ordering a mixed drink at a beer-oriented place. It was an early lunch, I'd probably have been better off with the less-expensive mimosa than the bellinitini. Anyway, I am keen to go again, at least for a beer and oyster happy hour but am somewhat worried about it being really crowded for that. It really is a lovely place, especially if it is good weather and you get to sit outside on the deck. I love that they have goats keeping down the weeds below-decks. Oysters on the half shell and a delicious selection of beers, combined with a lovely view, great service (at 2pm on a Thursday) and some amazing macaroni & cheese, are the wining combination that would make me want to drive over the Causeway bridge to return to this place. We stopped in for a late lunch while running around in Covington and now I look forward to the next time I have the need to nosh on this side of the lake! Our highlights included: $10 dozens of oysters!! Extensive and varied beer selections. (Arrogant Bastard for $6 a pint!) Club Salad which was big enough to split. Macaroni & Cheese which included cheddar, pepper jack & smoked gouda! YUM!! I can only imagine that it would be a good place to watch sporting events because from my seat I could see 15 flat screens all around, but we just stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed the whole experience. read more

So happy they have stepped up their game in the food department. The Chimes has always been the best place to take out-of-town guests because the atmosphere can't be beat. But for the first few years, the food was nothing to write home about. That's absolutely not the case any more. Excellent food! I love the grilled salmon. My husband loves the catfish perdue. And our son loves the seafood pasta. Red beans aren't anything I'd ever order in a restaurant but I ordered them on the recommendation of a friend. Outstanding! Oh my this place is always so crowded. I always know it's going to be an ordeal to come here. The parking lot is completely full at night. You have to drive around forever to try to find a spot. It's a bar/restaurant, so it's pretty rowdy at night; it's super loud and you can barely hear anyone speak to you. The back is cool with the wooden walkways and the goats. As for the food, I've never really been impressed with the quality, especially at their price point. The only thing I consistently get is their onion rings or their oysters during happy hour. Everything else I've tried was either awful or just passable, especially the seafood. The servers are mostly young women, and they don't know much about customer service. Im a sucker for good atmosphere and this place has it. A nice winding deck, a few cool goats and a river. You can pull up in your jet ski or car, whichever floats your boat;) The menu prices are a little high but the food is good. I was surprised at how tender the grilled alligator was and the raw oysters were great. The service is usually casual but pleasant. I came here on a date recently. The place was much larger than I had expected. It was nice. There was no wait but it was during the week so I don't know how it is on weekends. I had seafood lasagna and it was delicious and plentiful. I had enough to take home and eat for lunch the following day. My date had a couple of appetizers as his meal. I think one was spinach and artichoke dip. It was also very tasty. I don't remember what else he ordered nor did I sample it. The atmosphere here was pleasant. There were tvs to watch, the booths where huge which is great if you have several in your party and order a lot of stuff. Coming from texas I was so eager to try the best Creole food from New Orleans, we stayed in a hotel in Covington for the first night so we were looking for a good place to eat. This place was a little hard to find but we are glad we did find it. The food was simply perfect, hot, fresh and delicious. We ordered the corn and shrimp soup and the crawfish etouffee. They were both absolutely amazing and tasted homemade. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp pasta and it was good but the charbroiled oysters *we asked for both specials: blue cheese and jalapeño* were exquisite. We stayed in slidell for the Mardi gras but we had to come back the second night and we repeated most of the dishes, this time we also tries the Oyster po boy and it was without a doubt the best thing I had. Easily one of the greatest restaurants I've been to. Amazing bar area, along with dining areas, and which I've never seen the two work so seamlessly together. The entire restaurant was beautiful, well, mainly the outside, but the inside is just as pleasant on the eyeballs. Date and I chilled in the bar area for a few drinks as we waited during a busy dinner hour on Saturday night, and I knew there was no chance of any excitement afterwards unless she was a few drinks in. I'd been drinking craft beer for most of the afternoon, so the bud lights (draft) I was ordering tasted like flavored water. I was wondering if they were slipping me some ultra micky lights or some bullspit like that. Anyways, the bartender was awesome, there were several who were very attentive in case it's busy and you're shy like me when trying to get a drink at a crowded bar. Server when we were seated was awesome. Perfect amount of checking in on us. Not too much, not too little, she was just right. We both got pasta, seafood pasta and cajun chicken, and they were both effin dankkkkk bro. Service is so fast, it's almost intimidating. We walked in BOOM we were seated, then BOOM our waitress was circling the table like a shark circles its prey. It was that pressure moment, order, order, order!!! Actually she was or is a sweet heart and knows he job. So it was beer, boudin balls, and Po' boy's. Boom, the food came. The Roast Beef Po boy was better then Mother's in NOLA, much better. A messy sandwich, but deliciously messy. Can't be 1/2 half raw oyster tuesdays!! Went on Mardi Gras day and it was PACKED! The wait was about 45 minutes, but I'm pretty sure we only waited for about 25. We had the charbroiled oysters, raw oysters, BBQ shrimp poboy - so yummy!! The bottom of the poboy was a tiny bit soggy..but only from the deliciousness of BBQ Shrimp butter "juice"! Nice spot. Ate there on Sunday and liked it a lot. The BEST shrimp and grits--we wanted to take the bowl and lick it clean. Really good shrimp po'boy. We asked for sweet potato fries, but got regular (good, though). When we told the waitress (not to complain, but to not get charged for the substitution), she not only corrected the bill but also brought us the sweet potato fries to go! This place has a great beer selection that pairs well with a very good happy hour. The beer are tall and cold with the bartender actually know their beers which is a definite plus. I ordered chargrilled catfish with a side of mac n cheese through Door Dash. They left out the mac n cheese, so I called Door Dash. Door Dash called Chimes, and ordered a re delivery of the mac n cheese. The mac n cheese arrived, but it was extremely loaded down with white pepper. My six-year-old son, for whom it was ordered, could not eat it. The Chimes messed the order up in the first place, and then the kitchen got vindictive when asked to correct their mistake.
