It couldn't have come at a more perfect time as we were looking for a new person to cut our 6.5 year old son's hair. We arrived a little earlier than our schedule appointment time but Mustapha welcomes us and took us in early. There were other barbers working away along with the owner Mrs. Belinda. The inside of the shop is clean and well maintained. There was a young man (it happened to be his first day of work- I think he was high school age) working hard and sweeping all hair up around the barbers chairs. Mrs. Belinda the owner was cutting a little boy's hair, first haircut, I think the child was a little over a year old. Her manner was so kind and sweet, the little boy didn't cry and his haircut went well! We showed photos to Mustapha of what Ian was looking for in a haircut. I think my son was going for a marine fighter pilot haircut. The haircut by Moos was amazing- he did a great job, the attention to detail was on point. Moos aka Mustapha is kind and welcoming, plus he has great talent. My husband, son and I were very happy with the outcome of the haircut. We always book Moos via Booksy. My hair was very long and I just wanted little curtain bangs. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. I left with no bangs but worse. She had cut my hair so deeply it looked like I had a bob when I put the front pieces forward. No blending from front to back. Very short in the front, long in the back. I was devastated by the utter lack of care. I think had she apologized right then and there I would have accepted the apology. But she acted as if she gave me the service I requested. During the cut, she did not acknowledge the other woman who works with her who told her to blend out what she had cut while she was giving me the haircut. Even though I do not speak the language I understood what she was saying to her. The whole experience was very strange especially considering we had a lot of trust built over the years. I always tipped, I am absolutely certain I treated her with the utmost respect, so this experience was shocking. I ended up having to go somewhere else to have the haircut blended, in the end I had to cut a significant amount of hair to blend out what had been done to my hair. Without an acknowledgment of my existence from my barber. He has the nerve to text me "hey bro I'm ready" when I'm halfway down the street. Moral of the story if you are paying for a service ($55) I believe you should at least be acknowledged or told that they need a few more minutes to finish up. Like isn't that basic customer service? Proper Cuts - A Community Treasure…read more My boys are now 11, 4, and 2, and we've been loyal customers at Proper Cuts since April 22, 2023. Both of my younger sons had their very first haircuts here with Sam (4) and Shawn (2), and the experience has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a parent of children on the autism spectrum (my 11-year-old is borderline autistic and my 4-year-old is Level 2, non-verbal autistic), I cannot overstate the level of care and concern this team shows. My family requires patience, understanding, and flexibility, and Shawn and his team consistently go above and beyond to provide superior customer service. When my 4-year-old kicks, screams, and/or cries... Shawn calmly allows breaks to help him regulate. The entire shop joins in applause after each haircut, even on "challenging days," because they know he responds well to high praise. They've celebrated birthdays with my boys, and most recently, Shawn sliced his finger while carefully perfecting my son's haircut during a stimming episode... yet he never lost patience or compassion. Shawn is a perfectionist but also understands that my son runs on an internal timer, keeping haircuts under 12 minutes. (Yes, it's very specific because we timed it). Chris, a neighboring barber to Shawn, noticed my son struggling to calm down and immediately brought over a lavender oil-soaked hot towel, which worked instantly. That thoughtful gesture inspired us to add lavender diffusers in all of our children's bedrooms! Beyond their care for my family, Proper Cuts is a true pillar of the community. Just last week, they were brainstorming ways to provide free services to families impacted by the government shutdown and suspension of SNAP benefits. They even reminded me that we missed their annual Halloween block party, where they shut down the street, host food trucks, bounce houses, a DJ, and create a safe trick-or-treating experience for kids. While they may not have formal academic training in special needs care, Shawn, Sam, Chris, and the entire Proper Cuts team have done a phenomenal job meeting my family exactly where we are. Their kindness, patience, and genuine care have made Proper Cuts more than just a barber shop! Proper Cuts is a part of our family. We refuse to go anywhere else, and I promise you will too.
