Citizen Public House was aptly named on this Saturday night, packed two deep at most spots around the bar, and of course all tables filled. It was obvious that this made it difficult for the staff there, having to dodge around customers like an NFL running back. Even though this kind of establishment (i.e. craft cocktails, micro-brews, and upscale bar food) have become the norm all over Boston/Cambridge at this location, this side of Fenway Park, it's one-of-a-kind. I enjoyed the Rapscallion, and have had the Pretty Things' stout (powerful stuff!), and the dark n' stormy was decent (less ice next time please). I had the homemade gnocchi and it was pretty good. Heard from others that the burgers, salad with bacon (!), and meatballs were good too. Oysters seem to be a popular choice with many patrons. They did run out of some of their food offerings, which was a shame, but a good sign of what else they are offering. Definitely worth stopping in for drinks and food. One side note, a friend (of Biba's Baked Goods) had made cupcakes for our friend's birthday but was told that she couldn't bring them in. They had a plating fee, but she was fine with that, but since they weren't told in advance she was told no. As in another review, a bit pretentious seems to fit, so 3.5 stars. read more

Here, piggy piggy!!! Yup, went here for their pig roast with a group of people and it turned out to be quit the pig feast! You have to have at least 10 people I believe to even order the pig, but they slow roast your pig for you and serve it complete with all kinds of seasonal side dishes which for us included the biggest largest roasted beets I have ever seen---these things were on steroids for sure, I had no idea beets could be that big! Their fried green tomatoes were also pretty good, but I prefer my fried green tomatoes to be slices rather than whole tomatoes. And the pig itself is stuffed with all kinds of goodness, so that paired with the sides oh! and we got oysters and clams and shrimp to start too! You can see what a feast it is! Now the pig was pretty good, but the best part was when they took the pig head away and then brought it back completely dissected for us to try--yup! had my first ever pig brain and it tasted kind of like a creamy pate of some sort! Really eating it on a little crostini made it just took like any other tapanade :-) And they cut up the tongue and eye and cheek and ears, so that was my favorite part by far. But the pig itself I was actually expecting to taste a little more flavorful--in comparison to my pig head experience at cragie on main I think the flavor for their pig head outdid Citizen's pig head, but I didn't get to try the brain there, so pros and cons like always in the food world! Now this feast doesn't include any drinks which I think is lame because it works out to be almost $60 per person with tax and tip and all that, which is definitely pretty pricey. I'm liking this place. I admit I think I need to explore the menu a little more (hence the 4 stars), so I'm hoping to return. First off, the drinks are strong. The St Germain Cocktail was nice. The Americano was ok but thats probably because I"m not a huge fan of orange flavored things in my drinks. The Mint Julep had a major kick. My favorite was the Cucumber Collins. Loved it. It was light, not too sweet, nice refreshing taste. Too bad I'm not a Whiskey drinker, they have this Japanese ice ball machine especially for it. We started off with oysters. The menu is pretty unique. Whipped Lardo? Foie Gras donuts? Their special that night was a Foie Gras encrusted steak. Definitely a good place to go if you're in the mood for something different. There were a bunch of things that sounded good. I went for the Tuna Burger because I wasn't in the mood for something too filling. It was pretty good with the pickled ginger and slaw. Well done Citizen. A whiskey list longer than my arm, a spicy steak tartare, and a very cool ice sphere. What more could a man want. My friend Kristen brought me here to show off Boston's cocktail skills. I found the bartenders friendly, the atmosphere accommodating, and the drinks damn good. We ordered the fried pickles and the steak tartare. I had expected pickle spears and was pleasantly surprised to get chips instead. Not greasy but just battered, the pickles pleased. The steak started disappointing as I'm used to seeing it prepared before me, but the execution was spot on. Spicy and satisfying. The Old Fashioned I ordered was made with the classic recipe, and the genever drink I ordered next was off an off the menu selection that was executed flawlessly. I'll be back. read more

Call 4 weeks in advance for pig roast reservation. The manager imfoms me that it won't be a problem to accommodate a party of 12, just call a week ahead of time to confirm. When I call back 3 weeks later the same manager tells me that he now can't accommodate said reservation. Accuses me of never speaking to him 3 weeks earlier. Then proceeds to call me a liar and hangs up on me. Good to see that class & professionalism is really at the forefront of what's going on at this establishment. read more

I was so excited to try this new oyster, bar, foodie place. I continue to be so pleased with what's happening in the Fenway. I had very high hopes. Boy was I disappointed! My spouse and I arrived at about 6 pm on a Friday evening. There was not a line at the door. The bar was full, but there were open booths. The hostess asked if we would be willing to sit at the bar. Given there were open booths and I knew we were having dinner, I said no. She made a face and tossed around some attitude and stated that they really liked to reserve the booths for more than two people. That said, she begrudgingly ushered us to a booth THAT WAS SET FOR TWO PEOPLE not four. So...apparently two in a booth isn't *that* much of a problem. We were excited about the menu. It was varied and looked like there were several yummy options. We were disappointed there weren't more entree options, but maybe they make their money on apps and drinks. There was a wait for our wait person to take our order, but we knew that it was a Friday night and they were busy so we understood. Eventually she showed up and took our orders. Our wait person was perfectly lovely and kind. She didn't seem to be at all rushed or stressed. We waited way too long for our drinks and my glass of white wine was warmish. Eventually some bread showed up and then our wait person came back and took our order. I ordered three of their daily selection of oysters and my spouse ordered the bratwurst. Both selections were delicious except I was a little bummed my oysters came out so far ahead of the bratwurst. While we were tasting each others food, a bit of sauerkraut dropped in my water glass. I asked the wait person to get me another glass - yeah, that never showed up. Next we ordered our food. Given the price, I expected my lamb burger to be absolutely amazing. It was far below my expectations. The fries were impressive, but I wish they had spent more time on the burger and the aioli that was spread on it. It lacked flavor and what flavor it did have was so boring. I managed to squeeze another glass of wine out of our polite, but way over-busy wait person. All in all, given the price I won't go back to this place. Why only two stars you ask? Because while we were enjoying our remarkably sub-par, outrageously priced dinner, various hostesses, managers and waitrons proceeded to march up to our table to assess how far along we were with our meal. They made it clear from the get-go they didn't want to seat us at a booth and then proceeded to spy on us to see if we were finished yet. Part of me wanted to order dessert just to spite them, but I knew I would only be hurting myself with another item off the menu. The final straw was when we took our validated parking ticket back to the garage to discover that the validation took only $2 off the price of parking. Seriously?! You want me to drop that much on a boring old dinner and then you have the nerve to only take $2 off?! Ridiculous. If you want really good food, really good service, and free parking, forget the fancy schmanzy snooty Citizen Public House and head across the street to Tasty Burger (http://www.tastyburger.com/)...you'll be far happier with your meal and so will your wallet. read more

We came in on Tuesday night and despite it being pretty busy we had a great time!!! -The mood is dark and warm "might want to bring a pillow and blanket..... after a couple of bourbon drinks you're going to need it". -We sat at the bar... and unlike some of the previous reviews we found the service to be Awesome!, we got lucky and grabbed the corner booth/bar seats all the way in the back, right next to all the cool crystal punch bowls. -Our bartender was super knowledgeable and a great host, I wish I remembered his name. The other bartender that brought our food was also very nice and had a good way about him. -We each had a cocktail and some Ricotta and honey on toasted crostini , Which I loved!. They also have house made beef jerky which looked great, The BF was regretting not getting some the whole way home. :( It is great having a new addition to the neighborhood, We definitely will be going back soon. read more

Bourbon, Oysters, whole pig roasts. When you get one of their hundred plus whiskeys or bourbons, order the ice ball. Allow me a moment to geek out: It's about the size of a baseball and fits in your glass. The shape allows the ice to cool your drink, but melts super slow so it won't water down the taste. I think the Japanese invented it. So smart. Also, they have wine on tap. They have a fresh oyster bar, they will roast you an entire pig, and they have the Best Burger in Boston. They put Stilton cheese on it, then top with house made CANDIED BACON. You don't even need ketchup on it, and in my entire life, I have never encountered a burger I could say that about. The only thing holding them back from a 5 star for me is that it has taken me a LONG time to get my food a couple of times. The burger is outstanding, but it still shouldn't take 45 minutes to make. #500 is here! The thought of recalling it devouring oysters works for me! I heard about this place opening around the same time as Island Creek which I had an average experience at. I knew I wanted to come here for oysters next before going back there again. Entering the restaurant it was instantly warm, a fireplace in one corner, bodies packed at the bar and a general pleasant aura. The menu was reasonable. I looked at the one online which was a lot smaller then the one in the restaurant. Make sure to get the specials from your server. We started with a bunch of oysters. The memorable ones for me were the Yakimoto's..cousins of the Kumimoto's. They were the smallest oysters I've ever seen, their shells covered in barnacles from the deep sea..the flavor was a marriage to my taste buds. Even though they were tiny, they could be the best oysters I've ever had. For apps we got chicken fried livers. My fiance liked this a little more then I. It was tasty but I preferred the pigs trotter schnitzel over it. This schnitzel was mad good. The portion could of served as my entree. Don't think about whats in it, just try it! We shared the duck and sausage cassoulet. This arrived in a large cast iron skillet. The duck was so tender. You could taste the sausage juices mixed in. I would recommend this rustic combination. It was a special however so many not available all the time. I liked mostly everything about this place. Some small things I noticed that wouldn't deter me from coming again were, certain parts the bar offered a very small counter space to sit at, which wouldn't be ideal if you planned on putting down dinner plates. Hence we chose to get a table even though seats were open. The other side looked a bit more spacious. I did find some wines by the glass slightly overpriced. I had gotten the same exact kind the next day at a different place priced at $3 less per glass. The mixed drinks however were reasonable. The pig roast does seem like a cool thought with a large group. You need at least 10 people. I'm a fan overall, will return again soon for more! read more

I planned a surprise pig roast for my husband's 30th birthday this past Saturday and we were not disappointed! The planning was as easy as it gets - I called and set up the reservation and the person I spoke to was very nice. I called several times with a lot of questions (could I bring dessert? yes. could I bring decorations? yes) and they were very patient with me. They were also quite patient with changing the number of attendees when I had some friends RSVP late and cancel late. The food was absolutely amazing. The first course was oysters and clams on the half shell and prawns. For the pig roast portion, the chef came out with the 40 pound suckling pig and explained all about it. The presentation was incredible. The taste, though, can't be beat. It included sausage, pork belly, ribs, and chops, plus overwhelming portions of three sides (pureed sweet potatoes, grilled cauliflower, and carrots). Everyone ate as much as they could, but we could have fed twice as many people. And now I've saved the best for last. Andrea's service was superb. First, she helped set up the table to my liking with all the decorations I had brought. She always made sure I had a drink in my hand and was incredibly attentive to the birthday boy. Not only that, but our guests were always happy and never wanted for anything. She served the cupcakes I brought in a very aesthetic way and even included a birthday candle without me having to ask (I had forgotten that detail!). She called me and my husband by name and was very on top of making sure we were having a great time. I also noticed that she had other tables, but it felt like we were her only priority all night. Any time we asked for anything, it was there about 12 seconds later. And she was always smiling! The food is always good at Citizen Public House, the drink selection is great, and the atmosphere is so fun. This past experience was no different. Well...tickle me Elmo. Wait. I mean pink. Well...tickle me pink. Wait. I don't think I mean any of that. I flipping hate being tickled and pink is sooooo three years ago. This may become a go-to over time, I blame their use of oysters, booze and laid back / sort of dope / kind of retro / kind of cool - atmosphere. I mean...they will cook your entire party a whole roast pig. What's not to like? I'm sure they want a little notice on that one, but seriously? A whole pig? Can I get a bear or a zebra instead? That would be pretty insane. Up yours table with a pig, we're getting a whole roast suckling rhino! The drinks are made well. I had a few custom bourbon drinks and a few mint juleps. Take that live, thank you very much lady bartender. Thank you indeed. Speaking of bourbon they have a ridiculous list. No joke on the beer list either. A lot of stuff you will likely recognize but still a very diverse list. Food. Christ, don't get me started. We had oysters, we split a burger with fries, I had some insanely good gnocchi and let's see some type of salad thing. It was all good. The oysters were fresh (vs. what, from a can or from somebody's pocket?) and served with all the appropriate goodies, the burger was delivered as ordered (med. rare) was pretty tasty and the fries were dope. The gnocchi was one of the best things I've eaten so far this year. And salad. You don't make friends with salad, but it is still good for you. So tickle me not being tickled and returning to the Citizen but probably never around a Red Sox game because I am sure that would ruin my opinion given it's proximity to Fenway and also don't you hate on run sentences with no punctuation? read more

Ready for an epic experience? The pig roast is something between an ethereal edible dream and something that requires a plastic bib with a picture of BABE on it. DO NOT BRING VEGETARIANS HERE for this. They will probably leave in tears or have sweaty nightmares for days. You take a seat with your party of 16 or so, and out comes a man who looks like he's a rockstar by day and a butcher/chef by night. With a huge tray holding an enormous whole glazed, roasted pig. He explains how he's going to sever little Babe into pieces, and the order in which you'll be served the ribs, pork rinds, etc. Seated at the long tables in the back, you pass trays of buttery cauliflower, sweet potatoes, collared greens, juicy ribs, pork rinds, roasted pig ears, etc. up and down, family style. It's an amazing meal at best. A bonding experience at worst. Of course, you'd have to love meat to really appreciate this. They even bring out the pig's jaw, brain, eyes, and all the extra bits at the end, laid out both beautifully and cryptically on a silver tray. All edible, so if you're an adventurous eater, go all in and you won't regret it. Cocktails and drinks here are incredible. Try the SIxth Sense Slushie (try saying that twice...) if you like gin cocktails or an Old Fashioned, both which are made extremely well here. Needless to say, I'm a meat-eater, and I love this place. It's fancy and casual all at once. It's like a date with a person who can look great in a t-shirt and jeans and also cleans up reallllllllll good. Except it's a restaurant. And you can't date it. Yes this place is amazing. Anyone who doesn't like it is an asshat who probably wandered in looking for a sex on the beach or jager bomb or whatever god awfulness you subjected yourself to in college. Don't waste the bartenders' talents, they know how to make some serious cocktails. Classics as well as inventive soon to be new classics. You've got your Drink, Eastern Standard, Green St, Clio yeah yeah, excellent of course but these guys should be on your radar too. As well as Trina's and the bar at Rendevous, but those are reviews for another day. Space is intimate, very noir feel at certain times. I'd take people there who look best at night if you know what I mean. It's ok, we're not all smokin'. Though I think it's a job requirement of all the staff there, hot damn folks. Seriously, all of you should call me. I agree with the girl who said, "the goat cheese tasted like they had just milked a goat!" That shit is so fresh that damn goat is probably tethered out back. Anyway...oysters, pig, cheese, dessert, cocktails, and whiskey good lord do they have a whiskey list. I hate brussel sprouts. Brussel sprouts were part of the "you can't leave the table until you finish your veggies" chapter of my life. It was torture, stuck at the table having to nibble those bitter little cabbages bit by tiny bit, while mom and dad got to watch The Cosby Show. Citizen Public Houses' brussel sprouts have forever changed my opinion of brussel sprouts. They were ridiculously tasty. I don't know how they do it, but they should tell every parent in America. No child would need to suffer ever again. The rest of the meal got high marks as well. Short ribs were very tender and not too fatty. Cod with lemon herb risotto was cooked just right. Creme brulee was a nice finish to the meal. I wouldn't recommend the steak house iceberg salad with candied bacon. I love me some bacon and it was fairly tasty while the bacon was still warm. Once it cooled, the whole sugar-bacon thing lost its luster. Service seemed genuinely friendly, and we were very appreciative of our server who comped our dessert when the salad, which we had ordered as an appetizer, failed to come out before our entrees. The whole set-up, with the bar in the center of the room, seems more conducive to drinks than dinner. As the place got busier and busier the bar crowd ended up clustered by the dinner tables. The place still has a lovely vibe, it's just not quite as romantic with the bar flies all up in your bizness like that. read more

Besides their confused decor and their huge selection of bourbon and delicate selection of beer; their food is really good too. Extremely small portions and expensive, but delicious. Their execution on the little food that they serve is spot on. If you are not there for the food, but want to try different small batch bourbons (like myself), I think that would be also acceptable by the great bartenders that they have. They have a quite extensive list of bourbons, rye's, whiskey and some scotch too. I think if I ever win the lottery I might even come down there to try their whole pork roast feast and what seems to be fresh oysters too. read more

Things are looking up at Citizens, both on the food side and especially on the service side. Tops were the pulled pork tacos. Five stars for those. The foie gras pate was too salty, and insufficiently sublime, but pairs well with the sweet fig jelly and crispy toasts. None of the three oysters we sampled were particularly distinctive, which at $3.25/pop, makes them way overpriced. Just doesn't seem right that oysters here are priced much above $2.00-$2.50 each. Also, we didn't really like their improvised version of mignonette sauce and the cocktail sauce was undistinctive as well. Many other new menu items seem intriguing, from the NY Sirloin ($29) to the pork chop ($25) to meatball parm sliders. Overall, the service was great. Our waiter was attentive and responsive. Food came out quickly and hot. Thankfully, the 'service with an attitude' thing seems long gone. read more

Love, love, love. Came after a Redsox's game and it was packed, but me and a friend managed to grab two seats at the bar. The Whisky/Scotch/Rye offerings are INSANE! I had this amazing problem of going through the 200-300 or so offerings and eventually decided on a signature cocktail "Smokeshow" - Famous Grouse Scotch, Benedictine Old Monk, & a Maraschino. Very well crafted and the bartenders look like they take pride in making their drinks. We ordered some raw bar offerings. Oysters 2 ways, shrimp, and clams. All was made at the raw bar at the end of the bar so you can see it all in plain sight. All the food was absolutely stellar! fresh, tasty, cold, and clean. I was amazing with the quality. Bartenders were very attentive, bathrooms were clean, and the space was dark woods, dim lit, and had a gentleman-like study feel. read more

First and foremost, I need to tip my hat to Mike the bartender. I rolled into Citizen's after work, frazzled as all get out, with a coworker. It was Mardi Gras, and I was craving a particular cocktail- a Sazerac, the official cocktail of New Orleans. Not only did Mike know what it was, he showed me how to make one, too, after I asked. He was incredibly gracious. The food is phenomenal here. There is not one dish on the menu that doesn't tantalize the taste buds. Hands down, this is the best restaurant in the Fenway area. With a dark, warming decor, friendly staff, quality food and enough whiskey to put down an elephant, its hard not to like the Citizen Public House and Oyster bar. Last night, we saddled up to the bar around 530. As I sipped my Brooklyn lager, my eyes gazed at the menu. I was a little upset that I didn't bring 9 of my friends and called two days earlier as I would now be eating an entire suckling pig, but there is always the day after tomorrow, Right? At the advice of Corey the bartender, I started my meal off with some Deer Creek Oysters from Washington and another variety from Massachusetts. Te Deer Creek's were amazing. However, with only three types of oysters on the menu, I feel like the name is a little misleading. My meal continued with the tomato soup and grilled cheese. Both of which were right on the money. It was a cold night and soup was the perfect remedy to bring my body back to 98.6 degrees. While the grilled cheese was kinda small, this menu item was in the appetizer section. I felt that the menu was a little small and could have used another 6-8 items for diversity. All in All, I'm happy I checked it out and will definitely considerate it the next time I'm in the Fenway. read more

Citizen Pub is a foodie-friendly gastropub done completely right. It's a relatively small place with an incredibly inviting bar, solid beers on tap, excellent craft cocktails made with real attention to detail, and hearty, reasonably priced food. It's cool to come just for the booze -- the $3 Fernet on tap is a strong draw, as is the immense whiskey list. For cocktails, check out the Cocchi Classico (so refereshing!), the Vida Rebellion, or the excellently-done Mint Julep. Or just ask the bartenders and tell them what you're in the mood for -- they'll hook you up. The menu is meat-heavy, so vegetarians may want to look elsewhere, but for carnivores it's the place to be. The pork tenderloin was particularly outstanding, hitting that elusive combination of lean, juicy, and seasoned without overpowering its innate porky goodness. Seriously people, check it out -- I've always had a great time here whether it's for dinner, cocktails, or just a quick shot of Fernet after stuffing myself across the street at Tasty Burger. read more

Food is actually good. On its own, food would be 4 stars. Loved the farm salad and fish and chips. Prices for food are not unreasonable. Drinks are overpriced however. It's the service that pulls this rating to the 2 star level. Long wait for our drinks and no follow up to ask if we'd like another. Had to seek out a staff person twice when we lost sight of our server, once to request silverware (to actually be able to eat the food we ordered) and once to pay our bill after growing tired of waiting for the server to pick up the check and credit card. Combined with unnecessarily loud music, the service and overall experience do not make me want to return anytime soon. read more

I came here last night and loved it. For a Tuesday, it was packed at happy hour but cleared out once the Sox game started. Still, 30 mins for a table but while we waited we grabbed a beer and a seat at the bar. The oysters, while expensive at $2.25 each, were probably the best oysters I've had. We had 2 varieties from Cape Cod. They were huge, and totally delicious. I had one of the specials - linguine with bacon, mushrooms, and peas. It was also very good although a bit salty. I found there menu to be a bit limited but the oysters alone are worth coming here for. There are burgers on the menu too which I saw going by to other tables often. The table next to us had a whole pig and the chef came out to talk about it before taking it back and cutting it up. Service also very friendly and a lot of expediters to help the waitstaff. All around, a great addition to the Fenway area and I will be back! read more

Yum. First restaurant I had the pleasure of visiting while in Boston. Very interesting vibe as I walked in: I loved the contrast between the old-school pier feel that the dark and woody tones, as well as the dock-related decor provided and the interesting, creative and decidedly contemporary menu. Oyster's seemed to be their thing, so we obviously started out there. Very good! Accompanied with just enough acid to make things interesting, without killing off the delicate taste of the shellfish. A little too much seawater in the shells, in my opinion. Dinner was their duck breast with a sunchoke puree and sauteed greens. Everything was very good, but the cherry sauce that was skillfully paired with the duck was anything but liberally provided. Wish I could have had more! It was a pleasure to eat at Citizen's Public House yesterday. Maura was excellent in providing suggestions. For starters we had the deviled eggs, chicken livers, and honey and ricotta crostini (a great comfort food) which were a great deal at $5/ per starter. The bartender was kind to concoct me a nice mocktail due to being pregnant. For entrees, I had the chicken and spaetzle. The chicken had a lovely char and the spaetzle had nice smoked bacon bits. My husband was torn between his favorite braised beef ribs and the pork cheek. He ultinately chose the latter and he wiped the plate clean. The cheek was beautfully tender with fresh vegetables as a side. The atmosphere was lovely as well. we enjoyed the old school R&B that flowed through the space. This place was awesome! My husband and I decided to stop here on our way to Fenway. The mixed drinks were unique and delicious, not to mention the housemade whiskey. I had the pork shoulder tacos, and they were out of this world. My husband had the burger and fries, and he was in heaven. I came here with about 13 people and we ordered the Pig Roast meal. It's somewhat of a small place with the bar in the center. I'm Filipino, so pig roasts are nothing new to me, but I have to admit, their pig roast was delicious and perfectly cooked. The meat was tender and the skin was crisp, and even the sides they served were delicious (mashed potatoes, vegetables, etc.) The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because at certain points during the meal service was slow, but keep in mind...I was with a party of 13 people. We have been here multiple times and honestly, the food menu and drink list stands up to the hype every time. The drink menu changes and has the most innovative and Delicious whiskey mixers that we've ever tried. My husband and I were teetering on the edge of whiskey enjoyment and were propelled into full-on enthusiasts after a few nights out here. The small plates and entrees are always inventive with beautiful presentation that matches excellent fresh flavors. We always try to taste something new when we come here, and have yet to be disappointed. The last time we went my husband tried one of the specialty whiskey cocktails on tap... surprisingly fantastic! Our only critique was that the orange zest marinating in the drink was a bit strong, but the drink held up to it very well. I had a chilled red zinfandel which was perfect for me on a hot day when I still felt myself craving red wine. I actually haven't been able to stop thinking about it.... I guess another visit will be in order soon :) The atmosphere here is very classy but unpretentious. Sometimes it can get slightly boisterous for a date night, but that usually doesn't bother us. If you've been thinking about coming here I would suggest doing so before 7pm as it appears to become explosively busy after that time. This spot is one of our favorites. read more

This place is great. I've been here for drinks a bunch of times, a couple of times for dinner and for brunch. Located around Fenway, definitely a great place to meet up with people....the only problem is, if the sox are playing get ready to dash out $30-40 for parking or valet. Service is great. Food is fantastic. The oysters are always fresh, the duck is amazing, the tuna burger and the regular burger are done right. The steak came out undercooked once, but I didn't really mind because the rest of the experience was great. The veggie bloody mary at brunch is where it's at. I wasn't adventurous enough to try that meat bloody, but i hear it's rather delicious. They have an interesting wine selection, but i usually stick to cocktails. This place gets quite loud sometimes, but there are some great seats in the house (especially that circular booth in the corner) read more

We went as a party of 12 for the pig roast (something you need to book in advance, minimum 10 people, fixed price, drinks not included). They took great care of us with filling waters, being attentive with drinks, explaining each step of the pig roast, etc. No complaints there - or really no complaints in general, but the food (primarily the pork) did not stand out as amazing. The flavor was okay, the portions were huge. I was hoping for more variety in regards to what was served in terms of pork cuts - it was basically just sausage, crispy skin, and shreds of meat. What about all the delicious cuts a pig offers - the belly? Bone in loins? Or Charles Barkley's favorite, ham hocks? If you go to a pig roast and the most disappointing part is the pig, something is wrong. The sides were great, service decent, and the idea great in theory but in execution it fell short. I would not clamor to do it again but it is a novel idea. read more

Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I went on their grand opening night, when many would assume a new establishment would have some kinks to work out, as most good businesses do when they first open. In my eyes, they were flawless. Me and my date started off with some oysters from the raw bar. They had 3 varieties and we sampled them all. Two were east coast oysters, and one was a west coast oyster from B.C. All were very flavorful and appetizing, a great start to the meal. The east coast varieties were HUGE, especially compared to the west coast style. We then moved on to their "snacks" section in which we had the Rosemary whipped Lardo, a nice pig fat spread that is served with toasted bread and some olives, and the Warm Ricotta and Honey. The Lardo was interesting and tasted good, but with so many good things on the menu I would not be a repeat offender on this. The Ricotta and Honey on toasted crostini was AMAZING! They were warmed and had a perfect combination of the two toppings drizzled on the toasted bread. I would definitely repeat that order, though would consider it as a dessert at the end of the meal, as it is rich and sweet. On to our mains- I got the grilled clams and my date got the pork schnitzel. The grill clams were again AMAZING! They were served with jalapeño butter (and small slivers of jalapeños) but with the amazing broth they came in, the butter was unnecessary and mostly unused. The schnitzel was also quite delicious. The fried batter did not overtake the soft. flavorful pork "pattie" found inside. It was light and airy, while still a good sized main course dish. We ordered a side of fries to accompany our entrées and they were thick and well-seasoned. The ambiance was wonderful, with just the right amount of dark wood and dim lighting. They whiskey list was jaw-dropping in it's size, and with the attraction of the "ICE BALLS" they construct for whiskey on-the-rocks drinks, it is more then inviting. The service was wonderful as well. Very amiable staff always available to you, effortlessly making you feel right at home. I will definitely be returning soon, 5 STARS indeed. read more

Solid meal experience just like all the times I've been to the Franklin(s). Our server, Ryan, had excellent menu knowledge and recommendations and even though it was late on a Sunday he coursed out our meals with the appropriate speed. To start we had the Sister Point oysters (and some other type)... these were orgasmic, and not just for the aphrodisiac value ;) In fact so good we had a dozen more at the end of the meal. Next was the meatballs and egg sandwich (random dinner option...) - the meatballs were perfect and the sauce was authentic and not tart, unexpected for an oyster-themed restaurant. The egg sandwich was delicious too, runny egg in the middle and generally amaze. Then we tried the lamb burger. Again, SO good. So flavorful I didn't need to douse it in ketchup (my MO) and the fries were perfect for people who like classy fries (steakhouse cut, hot, salty), unfortunately I like crispy waffle fries w seasoned salt, but my date enjoyed them. The sauv blanc was solid... I'll be back! read more

My partner and I have been accused of purchasing our condo because of it's location, across the street from the Franklin Cafe in the South End. When we heard the Franklin people opened a restaurant in the Fenway, we had to check it out. Not sure what took us so long, but we are very happy we left our little neighborhood to venture over to the Fenway. (We did check the Red Sox schedule first to make sure it was not a home game night!) The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. A great bar at the heart of the restaurant and there are several booths and tables around the dark but inviting room. We started with cocktails, and both were a hit. I ordered a few raw oysters, which were served over ice, with the classic condiments. I was in the mood for something a bit lighter, so I ordered the baby iceberg salad ($8.00) and the corn bisque (around $8.00 as well.) My partner ordered the BBQ Beef Rib with cheddar grits ($19.00.) Everything was amazing! So many restaurants serve a classic wedge salad, but their baby iceberg salad was an exceptional example of this classic! Roasted tomatoes added a nice sweet smoky flavor, and the light blue cheese was served on a crustini that made the perfect crouton. Small, crisp bacon bits floated in the rich creamy corn bisque that had a wonderful light tarragon flavor. The real star of the evening was the BBQ beef rib. To be honest, I usually hate BBQ! I always want to like it, but I had never found a BBQ flavor that I really enjoyed, until now! The rib was similar to a short rib, and was beautifully cooked and had a light glaze of BBQ sauce on the top. It was moist and amazingly tender. (To the point where half way through dinner my partner asked me why they brought him a steak knife.) The cheddar grits where the perfect complement to the rich beef. This was one of the best new restaurants we have tried in Boston. We can not wait to visit again. Oh, and by the way... If anyone from the Franklin reads this, we would love it if you would serve the rib at the Franklin in the South End... That way we can just walk across the street and get our fix! read more

Love it. The oysters are always fresh, and the menu have an ever changing selection of interesting dishes and flavor combinations. The beer (and whiskey, if you're into that) selection is great, with many local breweries featured. I can only speak to the pig roast from the leftovers I've had - which were the best leftovers ever. I can dig it. Citizen Public House is a great choice for dinner and/or drinks (well, besides game nights maybe...) Love the feel of this place! Lights are kept dim, which creates a relaxing and intimate atmosphere that's perfect for making good conversation. The bar is super cozy, with tons of drink options. They've got wine on tap, lots of amazing cocktails, and the whiskey selection is absolutely epic! Food is spot on, especially for you meat lovers out there. I started off with the Warm Ricotta & Honey at the bar, which was surprisingly delicious and comforting. For dinner, my table ordered the Handmade Burrata and Fried Pickles to share, both of which were very tasty. I ordered the Pan Seared 1/2 Chicken with Herb Spaetzel -- ahh!! The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked, but that spaetzel was the real winner here. Of course it was the perfect accompaniment to the chicken, but damn all that bacon-y and creamy spaetzel-y goodness is absolutely unrivaled. Last time I had spaetzel was in Germany, and rest assured it was not as indulgent as this one. My friends ordered the Beef Rib and the Carpetbagger as their entrees. I had a little bite of both and damn, Citizen knows how to get their beef tender and juicy. So good. You'll have to experience it to believe it.
