If you're visiting Boston and want to see the Fenway Park area, stop in here for tapas (that's what we call snacks in my part of the world) and drinks. I highly recommend the fried pickles. The batter is delicious and just ever so slightly sweet. We also had the meatball sliders- also amazing. Get at least one for each person. The bread they come on is buttery and delicious. My mom had a local wheat ale and I had the rosé cider from Maine which is supposedly sold at home and I sure hope it is. If you like rosé, this is for you. Last, and most impressive was the English Toffee bread pudding. Served steaming hot and with whipped cream on top, this was by far the most impressive dish we tried. This is a hidden gem in Fenway that I recently discovered. Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar is definitely underrated and overlooked! This place is my new favorite place for a late bite. The best part is the kitchen stays open late unlike some restaurants that close their kitchen super early even though the restaurant stays open. The food on the menu is super delicious. This took me by total surprise! I did not expect the quality and taste of the food to be this delicious!!! I was expecting your typical bar food but this is definitely a gastro pub! They have a wide selection of whisky, cocktails, wine and beer. They also have a full menu. My favorite dish on the menu is the roasted chicken. I usually don't order chicken at a restaurant but this is by far the best chicken dish I have ever eaten! The chicken was beautifully roasted and it was well seasoned and moist. The veggies on the side was cooked perfectly. I also tried the citizen sirloin burger here and it was cooked to a perfect temperature. It was super delicious! Service here was superb! The service was quick, friendly, and attentive. It's fun to sit at their long bar when you first come in. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of casual but sophisticated. Great first date spot! The food is delicious and well displayed. We came in with a group of six and were able to be quickly seated. All the food was high quality although a bit salty. Meat lovers will also go nuts over the pig roast. Make sure to fast before to save room for all the delicious food! Came here to celebrate my significant other's birthday and could not have been more pleased. We ordered two whiskey flights and smoked mussels to start. Note, the flights are preset which was great as you can choose the style/type that you want to try. The mussels were plump and flavorful! For dinner, we ordered the filet mignon and the "what's the Craic" burger (which came with crunchy fries), and a side of foraged mushrooms. All were prepared fantastically and not too salty for our tastes. For dessert, we ordered the bread pudding and it was lovely. I'd highly recommend getting transportation here as I can't imagine it'd be easy on a Friday night to get street parking. This is review is based on a 23 person whole suckling pig roast. Awesome. That should be enough but I suppose I will add some detail. One of my best friends was getting married and since we are all ancient (40+), the bachelor party wasn't destined to take place in Vegas or Providence. My wife suggested the pig roast at Citizen and I am so glad we went. One quibble before the good stuff: I had to called several (multiple!) times to get a hold of someone who could make a reservation, but once I did, they couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. So, 23 40yr old+ gangsters rolled in around 7PM on Saturday. Place was already humming. We were seated against the back wall. It's out in the open and LOUD so if you are looking for some sort of mellow or intimate setting, this isn't it. I heard you can sit outside with the pig in the summer and if true, that would be a transcendental experience. Back to Saturday. Server was terrific, totally attentive and patient with the blockheads who are mostly South Shore denizens and ordered Miller Lites at $5 a piece. (This kept the bill down as a bonus) However, the beer is nicely curated and the whiskey/bourbon/Scotch list is elite level stuff. I started with a perfectly made rye Old-Fashioned. First course was a trio of raw bar: oysters, little necks and shrimp. Shrimp were devoured by everyone while the oysters and clams were passed down to the aficionados along with a great white wine from Alsace . Really excellent. Fresh, flavorful, perfectly shucked. Main course was the whole roasted suckling pig. I mean, you know how good it was. Skin was impossibly crispy. Meat was tender and flavorful. The head was split by a few advanced eaters and it was every bit as good as the Pigs Head for Two at Craigie. Buddy ordered a red wine, recommended by the server. Didn't catch details but complemented perfectly Sides: corn bread, Brussels sprouts, stuffing, mac & cheese, sweet potato skins. We produced proof of our vaccinations (don't forget that in Boston! I was extremely disappointed with my overall experience at Citizen Public House and Oyster Bar. Friends were visiting from the Midwest and wanted oysters, since they can't get them where they're from. We figured any place that called themselves an Oyster Bar would be a safe a solid choice, and somehow, we were very wrong. To start off, they only offered three (3!) different kinds of oysters. That's it. If you want a wide selection of oysters or are picky about your oysters in any way, go somewhere else (highly recommend Mare in the North End or Island Creek if you're in Fenway). We ordered a combination of the three types for our party of 8. When they arrived to our table, we were even more disappointed. The meat had been mangled as if someone had tried to tenderize it with a butter knife and there were bits of shells everywhere. I really am not an oyster snob, but if you're going to call yourself an "oyster bar," at the very least know how to shuck an oyster. When the waiter finally came to check on us, we said something, and he shrugged and apologized. But it was pretty unacceptable and embarrassing to explain to our friends that they had to be wary of shell bits at the place we took them specifically for oysters. Hypothetically, if I went to a "whiskey bar," I'd expect them to offer a wide variety of quality whiskeys rather than just Jack Daniels and Evan Williams infused cocktails. Don't be fooled by Citizen "Oyster Bar." As for the other food, I thought it was overpriced. Our one friend described his side of asparagus as, "It tasted like olive oil it was delicious. On our way to Citizen Public we ran into a lot of traffic and ended up getting there at 8:07 PM. Even though we were cutting it close on missing a flight, we were already there so we decided to ask our waiter (HIS NAME IS SAL. HE IS SUPER SWEET AND INCREDIBLE AND JUST WAIT, THE STORY GETS BETTER. ALSO, IF CITIZEN PUBLIC READS THIS, GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE) for the fastest item on the menu because we had to catch a flight. He recommended the cod (LET ME JUST SAY THAT IT WAS THE GREATEST, WELL-COOKED FISH I HAD EVER EATEN BUT I'LL GO INTO THAT LATER) and some oysters as well. He also told us that he would alert the kitchen about our fast order and see what he could do. At 8:13PM we received our oysters with the full check (Sal made sure to mention that he didn't mean to rush us, he just wanted to bring it to help with time and we were so grateful), not only were we impressed with his timing, we were very impressed with the oysters and the sauces that came along with it; I mean, that was 10/10 material. Then, believe it or not, our entree came out at 8:17 PM, right when we had finished our beautiful oysters. Let me just say, this glistening cod, on top of broccolini and soft mashed potatoes with a sweet potato purée on the side, this god of a meal, was the tastiest thing I had ever eaten in my life. Hands down, a life-altering experience. I couldn't even believe I was in the presence of such culinary royalty. Honestly, I'm not one to post pictures on Instagram of food, but I had to do it and yes, it got a ton of likes. By 8:22PM we were out and about and headed to the airport. Yes, we made the flight. Someone recommended Citizen to me, so I thought I'd check it out. The first thing I noticed about it when I walked in was that it was very dark and quite loud inside. Once I sat down and got comfortable these things became less noticeable and just part of the experience, faded into the background. Citizen is spacious and open, the decor is nothing fancy, but that's fine - you're in a bar, and you know it from the feel of it. When I sat down, the bartender slid a glass of water down the bar to me and asked me the equivalent of 'what'll it be?' in a way that was so cool it is hard to describe. He and the other bartender also made pleasant conversation with me during my visit, which made me feel quite welcome, and the other bartender really knew her stuff as far as oysters were concerned which was a good sign. Talking with her convinced me to get another round of oysters which I most definitely did not regret. Cool place, great atmosphere, great staff, great oysters. I came here for a team work dinner on a Wednesday evening. A coworker and I arrived earlier than our other team members and were promptly seated. We came right at 5 PM, so the restaurant was pretty empty and there were a few people at the bar. Our server, I believe his name was Sal, gave me and my coworker menus to look at before the rest of our part arrived. The dining menu was pretty limited, but if you are into drinking cocktails and wine, that menu was robust. When the rest of the party arrived, Sal was very friendly and attentive, answering questions we had, and giving us recommendations on what to order as most of us had never been here before. Sal recommended the Cod and the Steak as his choice and some apps that we should try. For the table, we ordered loaded potato skins and crab fritters. For our main plate, we all ordered something different. I ordered the Pan Roasted Organic chicken and I asked them to give me fries as well. Some of the other plates that were ordered included the Cod, the Steak, BBQ pork chop, and a burger. Based on feedback, everyone pretty much enjoyed their meal with some minor complaints. One of my coworkers thought the sauce on the bbq pork chop was too salty, another had ordered her steak rare but felt it was more cooked than she would have liked, and one thought the Cod was a bit too spicy. My chicken was good, had a nice zesty flavor and I really enjoyed the fries, but after seeing the steak, wish I would have gone with that instead. After our meal, our server asked if we wanted dessert, and we asked for a menu. He told us that there wasn't a menu, and they only had one item. I forgot what specifically it was, some type of bread pudding, and I have a picture of it. It was delicious! The best food item I tried that night. We ordered the Ricotta Crostini which came with a woman's hair in the dish. My husbands burger was ordered medium and came medium rare. I ordered a second drink (espresso martini with baileys) and it came out without the shot of baileys. We had a reservation and we felt very rushed, the main entrees came out 3 minutes after our appetizers came out. We didn't even finish putting our appetizers on our plate before our main dish was brought to our table. Our server was nice. She was attentive and remembered our orders and acknowledged each of the mistakes that we brought to her attention. Our only complaint is that she didn't offer any solution to make our experience better in response to the problems we described. It seemed as though either the kitchen was understaffed or they just weren't prepared for the high demand of serving dinner before a show at Fenway. We were looking for a good place to eat after a late flight arrival in Boston and this was just the ticket. Oyster bar that you'll absolutely love. Kinda random that we found it at 1am but it worked out, it's right by Fenway Park too so for an out of towner like me that's really cool. They have fresher than fresh big meaty oysters from Cape Cod and a good selection of draft beers and ciders. This place gets a 5 because of the quality of their late night menu. Oysters, ahi tuna burger, and salmon among many other quality items. Get oysters and potato skins for appetizers then get a Main and a cocktail or draft beer. Great customer service too, greeted when we came in sat down and was immediately taken care of by a wonderful and attentive waiter. The atmosphere is awesome too. So let me start by saying this part of Boston is my old stomping ground. I was here for 4 years attending Berklee College of Music, so I'm quite familiar with the Fenway area. I walked into this pub and oyster bar with high expectations based on yelp reviews, however I was slow to realize that the reviews were probably written in most part by college students spending daddy's money and thinking that $45 for a dozen oysters is the best they've ever had! Well, the oysters were ok at best! Small and about as much flavor as a bottle of Poland springs water! Speaking of water, I opted to sit at the bar where I was greeted by young bar keep who placed a glass of room temperature tap water in front of me. When I asked if there were any specials, I got the 100 yard stare and a response of, "nope, not really." I then asked where the oysters came from and he rattled off a few places around New England and said they were excellent. I ended up ordering a beer and a dozen oysters with an even mix of the 3 types he gave an inventory of earlier... I opted for a side of grilled brussel sprouts to keep things slightly on the healthy side. Another dude came out to shuck the snot rocks, the bar keep placed the beer in front of me right next to the refreshing glass of warm water, and just like that, the bar tender went poof! to the other end of the bar, never to be seen from again. No one checked in, asked how the phlegm sliders were, or asked if I'd like another beer. In the grand scheme of things, the food was tolerable but extremely overpriced and bland and the service is better at most Chinese buffets. I definitely have no interest in returning. read more

We really enjoyed our night at citizen. We started with a dozen oysters, and then another dozen. I told our server that I liked blue point oysters and he quickly recommended Washburn oysters, which were great. We also had a few bottles of Syrah, which was very good, a suggestion by our waiter as well. We ordered the loaded baby sweet potato skins, which were very good although not quite what I expected (not so much skins, bite-sized cubes of cooked sweet potato loaded with sour cream, bacon, and scallions). For dinner, I ordered the ahi tuna burger. It came out very salty but was tasty if you got past the salt. The waiter was very apologetic and brought me a new one (even though I insisted he didn't need to since I'd eaten half already). It came out still a little salty, but this time likely from seasonings and not just excess salt. My boyfriend ordered the NY strip, which was delicious. My other friend ordered the shrimp gumbo which I sadly didn't get to try but supposedly was great. The best part of our experience though was our waiter, who was very attentive and sweet throughout the night. We started out at the raw bar but wanted to switch (it's a small restaurant) and was more than happy to move us to a table. I didn't remember to get his name although I wish I had. Whole roasted pig dinner review: Come here with 10(0) of your closest carnivorous friends and feast, feast, feast on gastropubic (pronounced "puh-bick", you perv) fare made with love, New England-style. For $38 per person, start with incredibly fresh oysters, clams and cocktail shrimp--about 1 per person. It's okay to bring along friends who don't do raw seafood...more oysters for everyone else! Then, the pig. Our party of 11 got a 35 lb beauty which the crew happily presented to us whole (for photo opps, natch) before whisking it away to be cut up into bite-sized pieces. Out came a platter bearing the butt, another bearing the shoulders, another bearing other parts I can't remember and another bearing the head. Word of warning: Don't seat the less adventurous diners who are scared of a pig head in the middle of the table. They will be eating with that thing in front of them. And so we feasted on pork meat from all parts, and housemade pork sausage, and fried pork skin, and crispy pork belly. Then came the sides: mashed potatoes in gravy, summer salad, housemade stromboli with housemade red sauce and....ribs. Yes, ribs. Because there's not enough meat until there's ribs. Finally, it was head-cutting time. The master chef came out with the newly de-constructed head, brain exposed and eyes poked out and everything. He explained the various parts on the platter then calmly informed us that it was his personal policy not to leave us alone until he had watched the eyes being eaten in front of him. So I volunteered to eat one and my fellow adventurous friend volunteered to eat the other--to the relief of everyone else. Was it a coincidence we're both Chinese? I leave that to you to ponder. Word of warning II: Eyes are chewy with an almost fatty texture. Don't try to swallow the lens--it's very hard. The de-constructed head parts were met with considerably less enthusiasm and not only because we were more than 75% into our meal. The brain, lying there in its gray, wavy mass, was quite a daunting sight for some. Me, I picked up my spreading knife and helped myself to some of that grey matter spread over housemade chips. It tasted and felt just like fatty pate. In fact, every time I've had brain, it's been nothing but cholesterol-building fatness. Really not that different from eating lobster. Don't think I can't hear you raising your eyebrows. That's right. I said HEAR. In the end, we all took home enough leftovers for 3 days' worth of food. For $38, totally worth it. Oh, and they have an impressive cocktail list. I'd skip the Oaxaca Rose, which sounds good but is way too sweet. The Anjou-Rosemary Snowcone is delicious. read more

Yeah, people were jealous ;) FYI - * Pig roasts are generally available on weeknights or 6pm/9:30pm on Fri/Sat nights, so plan accordingly * Minimum of 10 hungry people required * Do not invite anyone who likes Piglet, Miss Piggy, Porky Pig, Babe, Pumba, Wilbur, and/or Hamm * Skip the rock-hard bread & salty butter... trust me, you'll want maximum stomach space for optimal eating * Try one of their craft cocktails. I recommend: cucumber collins * Be sure to work out 10x harder on the following week Our server Ryan was super cool and made our big dinner event fun and enjoyable ...except for the nasty fernet branca shots. Sure, they might have been palate-cleansing and "medicinal" but at 80 proof, it was a bad idea. Waitstaff in general were all friendly, responsive, and even folded our napkins (very rare in my experience at pubs). In numerous experiences here, I've been variously date-focused, food-focused, cocktail-focused, Sox-focused, and blithely un-focused. In each experience, I've had a blast and enjoyed whatever I ordered from the menu, from an Indian scotch with a Japanese ice ball to a fried pickle appetizer, and service has been anywhere from capable and attentive on busy nights to truly chummy and personally hospitable on more laid-back (perhaps read "off-season") nights. I love it here, will return frequently, and if (despite rather robust prices) I lived anywhere inside the 93/128 beltway, would probably try to take up part time residence here. read more
