Sometimes I feel that places get blown out of proportion after they've been on Food Network but The Clam Shack definitely lives up to the hype. This place had the freshest and most delicious lobster roll we tried during our whole New England vacation. There isn't much free parking nearby but there's a public lot a little past the Clam Shack on the left and if you're there for less than an hour they don't even charge you! We parked here and planned to just grab an afternoon snack lobster roll to split. The line wasn't super long since it was about 3pm, but there were still a decent amount of people there. You can order the lobster roll with butter, mayo, or both. I am not a huge mayo fan but the mixed option was enticing. A few minutes later, our lobster roll was up! It was a bunch of fresh pieces of lobster meat on a roll and perfectly dressed in the mayo-butter sauce. The sauce wasn't too heavy or globby, it worked really well with the lobster meat. A definite must if you're in the area. Just a side note, their shirts are really cool also. My husband bought a vintage-y looking one with the Clam Shack on it and we both really liked it. read more

Used to be very good. Maybe it still is for clams but I ordered a crabmeat sandwich there and got a small patty of salty crabmeat with little mayo and a slice of lemon on a plain hamburger roll. Not the best crab I have ever had. Usually, Maine crabmeat is sweet and not so salty. This tasted like it came out of a can. For $21, I expect a buttered, toasted roll with some mayo, lemon and top quality crabmeat, especially in Maine. read more

Worth the long wait in line. We were in Kennebunkport today visiting on our way home from Portland to CT. I wanted fried clam strips while we were in Maine and they did NOT disappoint. My family all got Lobster rolls and they were awesome too. They have fresh squeezed lemonade. The lady literally squeezed the lemon in front of us measured it and added water and sugar. So good. Highly recommend this place. Looks can be deceiving as it is a small place, but definitely worth it if you're in the area! read more

I don't know how our experience could have been any worse. Cold, tough lobster. Terrible bun. Dry sandwich even with mayo and butter. No where near a pound of lobster. Over priced and over hyped. Never again. I do not recommend. read more

Delightful place to experience Kenebunkport's Fare. For a tourist residing in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Hawaii) goodness, I ordered 1/2 pint of clam strips, fresh crab meat sandwich and the famous lobster roll. Was ok. Lobster roll was great. But the scallop roll came with only 4 scallops for I think it was $17 . But the scallop tasted pretty good. The Clams were I thought dry and small and mostly breading. I'd go back for the lobster roll but skip the clam strips which was also in my opinion a smaller portion then I've gotten at places in cape cod. Lobster roll was 4 stars rest two. As a local who lives here year round, deepest apologies to both tourists and locals--we should be getting what we pay for here. So sad the quality & flavor of the food is by far NOT an authentic representation of a truly tasty 'fresh' 'local' Maine seafood eatery. Just because a restauranteur has a good location in the heart of the port does not 'automatically mean' you are being served fresh local fare, which is deeply disappointing and dishonest. Secondly, the prices set on the lack of quality leaves you feeling absolutely gouged. And thirdly, where is the expertise in flavor, texture, etc??? Soggy, tasteless, forgot to salt the batter, etc etc is unforgivable. This is what happens when you have untrained, low-paid fry cooks versus an experienced seafood chef running the show. Fun spot, definitely could be viewed as a tourist trap. My family and I were walking past and were in the mood for a good lobster roll. We ordered two rolls and chicken fingers for our daughter. Food was very good, but EXTREMELY overpriced. From an out of towner lobster lover, there is definitely better lobster rolls within walking distance. Great whole belly fried clams! Used to get them when we visited my grandparents in Massachusetts and Maine. What a treat!

At 2:30 in the afternoon, they're out of CLAMS! Prices are exorbitant. Food is greasy and subpar. My advice is to skip it.

Let me start by saying that I very rarely do reviews, but there were so many things wrong with this place that I had to let people know.. So I just got an order of whole belly fried clams that cost $36 (plus tax). First, they looked like a mix of strip clams and very small whole belly clams. Second, they were overcooked to the point of being hard on the outside and dried out on the inside. After trying a few bites I was very unhappy with them so I asked for the manager (who is also the owner) and he came over and told me they weren't overcooked and that there weren't strips mixed in , and that they use very small clams on purpose, and "That's just how they are.." with an obvious attitude. Then I said, "You aren't going to do anything about it are you?" and he said "No" and I said, "I grew up here and I know what good fried clams are, and these aren't them." and I walked away. I think this is an okay lobster roll! I wish the lobster was warm and not chilled. And the bun was kind of meh, not toasty or warm. It wasn't bad, but we had a better one at Mabel's. Maine is fresh seafood heaven and you cannot go wrong with this place. The line was long but it moved quite fast and the food did not take long. We had the lobster rolls, fries and fried clam strips. The lobster roll was quite unique because it came on a hamburger bun, there was a lot of lobster inside and it tasted sweet and juicy. Look up anywhere in internet about best lobster roll and this place will appear. The lobster roll is a very basic lobster roll on purpose, let the lobster be the star. Have it with butter, mayo, or both. I say get both. They use every part of the lobster and you can see it and they try to proportion it so it comes out a certain texture. The clam (spend few bucks more for the clam, not clam strips) has a good clam taste. Seating is very limited. You can sit at balcony but be careful, your "table" is the rail. You knock over food it is falling into water or if you drop your phone chances are it too will be in the water. read more

We took the advice of Yankee Magazine and traveled to Kennebunkport to sample what they rated as "the perfect lobster roll." What we got in the lobster roll basket was a few pieces of lobster meat slapped on a limp roll with a swipe of mayonnaise. Tasteless. It came with truly inferior fries, a small container of soggy coleslaw and a few pickle slices. It was neither "generous" nor "reasonably priced." This, with two bottles of water came to $76. For that, we could have gotten a much better meal in a real restaurant. this may be the laziest local I've ever seen. absolutely no love put into their food. while the lobster for the "roll" is ample and fresh, the art of the lobster roll lies in the fixins and prep. it was merely lobster meat (not diced) w/ mayo squirted on an intoasted bun... a bulkie bun!!! no tarragon, celery, chives or lemon juice/zest.
