Stopped in for a quick breakfast after hiking. The cafe was packed but after a few minutes a spot cleared up. The food was delicious with great portions. The place had a cool vibe and also sells wine. Would definitely go back here! read more

The Spring Blossom latte is so pretty and tasted wonderful. Very strong rose flavor if you enjoy a cup of floral latte. The Classic Breakfast we order is great. Everything is very fresh. I read the Seattle Times article that pointed to the Coalman as a great place for cocktails. It is not the bar scene I was expecting, but the drinks were great. Took one look at the food and we want back another time for dinner and had such a hard time deciding among the options. Enjoyed the mixed nuts (with drinks), the bread, and the halibut (seasonal preparation). Guest had the Steak Frites - everything was excellent. Highly recommend. read more

Went for the first time last night for dinner - what a great experience! Absolutely loved the food - stellar taste and texture combinations. Not a big menu, but each item was prepared perfectly. Excellent service and ambiance. Love the option to purchase a bottle of wine to take home. And some wonderful 'extras' - cribbage to go game, spices, etc. I'll be back for more!!!! read more

So glad to have the Coalman in Newcastle! Based on only one meal, I can say that the food is very good. I have stopped for coffe several times and the coffee's excellent. Giving 4 stars only on account of a somewhat limited menu (understandable at this point in that it is a new restaurant). Coffee is 5 stars. Staff is very friendly and they even had dog biscuits behind the counter when I came in with my pup for a cup of coffee to go. I plan to eat more meals at the Coalman. read more

The place is pretty lively they serve breakfast and offer a full bar service and coffee. I'm a pretty big coffee drinker but for the price and quality you paying here i'd honestly prefer going somewhere else. Paid 8.26 extra 2$ for both soy and hazelnut. read more

Have been wanting to try this cafe out, and today realized it is In the parking lot of the Safeway I shop at ! Cute decor, love the modern feel. Seating is cozy, friendly atmosphere. Food and drinks came out quickly. A little confusing between is it self serve or service, ordering is at front with option to tip, but no water at the table and had to ask for service. Enjoyed the food, tried two different sandwiches. Food came with small bag of chips- at the price point - would like to see a different side or maybe something more thoughtful than small bag of ruffles. My daughter treated me last weekend to the egg and potato breakfast and l have to post about it! The quality and taste of the meal was 10/10 and the star of the show was the TOAST! In Seattle for a wedding we decided to skip the craziness of downtown and venture over here for dinner. The food and service were outstanding. HIGHLY recommend the ricotta dumplings. They had a hint of lemon, really enjoyable and refreshing summer dish. The pot pie was also amazing. The restaurant itself had a nice atmosphere and felt very clean. Been wanting to try this new restaurant in our neighborhood so we decided to go for Happy Hour on Friday. When we walked in, the ambiance was very chic and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. We got there about 40 minutes before Happy Hour ended and the place was almost full. Because it's not a very large restaurant, it was nice that you can enjoy their happy hour anywhere in the restaurant and not just at the bar. Almost every table was drinking Aperol Spritz so we ordered some too. I definitely enjoyed my Aperol Spritz! It made me reminisce my trip to Tuscany. It was on the happy hour menu for $5 and we learned that they have it on tap too. Their happy hour menu also offered charcuterie options for $5/oz but we decided to try a couple items on their regular menu. We got their Burrata and Deviled Eggs. Everything tasted great and was plated nicely. We will definitely return for happy hour and also try their dinner menu! read more

Don't let the location discourage you from visiting this cafes/cocktail bars. The interior is very classy but inviting. We ordered shaved brussel toast, delicata squash and charred carrots. The brussel toast was creamy but refreshing because of the combination from the ricotta and chimichurri. The delicata squash has saffron apple and pomegranate in it and it reminded us of a warm summer day. We didn't order the cocktails but we will definitely do so next time! When I found out later that it has the same owner as Brimmer & Heeltap, suddenly it all makes sense why this place is so good. We will definitely go back! read more

The interior is very cute & has a nice atmosphere but the set up is a bit confusing for dining in. There were no instructions and I had to clean the table I wanted using a napkin because you bus your own tables but no one is cleaning the actual table nor are there supplies to do it yourself. The coffee was good but we found the food (my group got the stuffed egg, French toast, Niçoise salad, and the bread plate, and a savory scone) to be okay but not amazing. The bread itself was very good. I'd stop by here again to grab coffee if I was in the area. read more

A wonderful addition to the neighborhood! Food is far and above anything else we can get in the area. Ambiance is stylish, fun, and elevated and the music playing was a hit with our kids and us. Staff was attentive and friendly and the food and drinks came out very quickly. The prices seemed on point for the quality. We will be back! I love The Coalman and visit at least once, sometimes twice, (this week three) times a week! Newcastle neighborhood has been long overdue for a place like this--amazing coffee, delicious fresh baked pastries, and vibe/ambience! We tried The Coalman tonight for dinner service. Very excited to have this on the Eastside. We stopped on today and had the meatball sub and breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious.

This place was fabulous when it first opened. When it's busy the service goes downhill. Not specifically wait times, that is to be expected, although waiting 25 minutes for a to go coffee is a long time... Friendly greetings and even just a smile from staff would go a long way. I observed a pretty short, rude interaction between staff and a customer and the family being served definitely noticed based on facial expressions. read more

I live across the street from the Coalman so I decided to go there to get a coffee and eat .Walking in your greeted by a sign that reads order your food before you sit down at a table,wasnt sure what to do after that ,then we saw a guy using a little screen to order and pay for his food.This was all confusing in how this place works so there was a lady at the end of the counter who works there but she didnt have any plans to come over to the other end of the counter to maybe greet or help us order the food....waited a few minutes to see if she would maybe be interested in us as customers.....she could have cared less we was there.I wasnt impressed by this place at all ,it seemed a rather snobby place that you find Boeing workers being catered to once again in this community,I wouldnt go back or recommend this place at all. read more

We've been here a few times since they opened. The food and drinks have been good, but we feel like they are overpriced. Especially when you add in a tip (for ordering at the counter and bussing your own table) The menu is also quite limited at this time. Nice ambiance indoors and a few outdoor tables. Excited to have an opportunity to try a Saturday breakfast at The Coalman, a welcome addition to Newcastle. Hubs and I split a lemon scone, which was flaky, moist perfection. Hubs had the baked French toast, which was thick, delicious, and a tad soggy. I had the steel cut oats, which were really good. I love the earthy, clean, modern, vibe of the interior. I look forward to when they extend their hours beyond lunch as their vast wine collection makes it the perfect place for an after work meet up. There are some small kinks to be worked out, which is understandable. My oatmeal was initially served with a knife and fork (no spoon) and no milk. Hopefully they'll tweak their printed receipts so that they don't give options for a 20%, 25%, or 30% tip -- strange in general, but especially for walk up ordering. The staff did check on us several times, which was great. I will definitely be back. read more

This outside of this place is quite unassuming. The inside is very upscale and they have a nice selection of interesting wines. It really seems like one of those cute spots for ladies who brunch. I had their meatball sub and I have to say that the bread is amazing. I would come back for that bread alone. The meatballs on the other hand were very dry and I would not recommend, especially at $16 a sandwich. That brings me to the prices. They're high. I mean, looking at the place on the inside, that's kind of what you would expect but I think the high prices are what will prevent me from coming back. This is a shopping mall and there's not a ton of people watching to be done so I'm not sure why you would want to linger here. I get paying $16 a drink at a swanky spot in downtown Seattle where people are dressed up and out and about, but this area is full of families with kids so I'm not sure I would want to hang out here and watch people load their groceries or go to their eye appointments. Anyways, this place is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale shopping plaza, hopefully the demographics of the area will change enough to keep this place in business. So excited to have this gem of a restaurant in our neighborhood! We've tried almost everything on the breakfast/lunch menu, and it's all fantastic. However our most recent faves are the quiche and root hash. If you like deliciously crispy bacon and perfectly cooked breakfast potatoes - the classic breakfast is a great choice as well. We haven't made it in for dinner yet, but happy hour has some great deals on wine and snacks. Try the burrata for sure. After many of our favorite Seattle gems have closed (Cafe Presse, Besalu), it's so nice to have a restaurant of this quality open so close to home. Great service as well. read more
