We met the orange and he gave me and my coworker the story of how it was a general store that started 92 years ago then a beer joint until him and his wife bought the place and now it's a great restaurant with great food. Well let's start with the ambiance. Country store vibes (used to be the Cochran general store). Walking up into the porch the live music hits your ears! Opening the screen door brings you back to the old store days! Walk up to the counter and you are met with the most sincere and nicest fella named Charlie With his straw hat and southern drawl. He'll shake your hand and if he doesn't recognize you he'll ask you if you've been here and if you say no, well, he'll make you feel like family. Explains the menu and deserts. Which is all homemade! Even the ranch. The food! Fantastic. Fried mushrooms as an appetizer (some were huge so just cut em up), chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried chicken sandwich, grilled chicken and fried shrimp. All were fantastic. Wife had to take her leftover fried shrimp since they Give you a nice portion. buttermilk pecan pie a la mode and peach crisp (cobbler's cousin as Charlie would say) a La mode were a perfect ending to a wonderful birthday dinner. To which i believe Charlie snuck over to the band to tell them so they sang happy birthday along with the other nice guests. Service, great. And Charlie will come by and make sure everyone is full! What a charming place. We stopped by this General store and grill, ordered the grilled chicken sandwich to split due to size! Let me tell you, this gal only eats white meat and by far this sandwich was the best chicken breast I've ever eaten! The fried shrimp was more than one person can split. (I don't eat seafood) but the neighbors beside us do and they loved it. Come try this extra extraordinary place. Now off for the banana pudding to share, it's was yummy! I would give this place more than 5 stars if I could. We had the best time visiting this little hidden gem. Mr Charlie was so nice and friendly. He made our whole evening. The food was sooooo good and when I tell you that the locals were flocking there, it's for the food. It is a simple and welcoming place,like going to Grandmas house. Everything is made from scratch and you can tell. Now they are only open 3 days a week, and close up at 8 - so you better make a plan. It's worth your time, I promise. Family friendly atmosphere. They made you feel like family as soon as you came in. The atmosphere made you feel like you were in someone's country home. The food was awesome and large portion. I had a fish sandwich which was a large filet that extended from both sides of the bun. The pickles were the added touch for their taste. The hamburgers were large and very good. Fun little hole in the wall place in the middle of nowhere is so worth the drive. Between Hempstead and Belleville not open daily. You walk in and it's a country home cookin' kind of place. We have been here several times and would give a 5 star rating time. The service has always been amazing until tonight. We were so excited to take our kids with the families to try it. Never have I felt so unwelcome when there were tables unreserved available, but the woman said she didn't want us to take up two table with the 6 of us and 2 kids. I would have initially given this 5 stars because the food is delicious and the owner (husband) is so sweet. However, the more we go, the more we realize how rude the other owner (wife) is. We have been asked multiple times to not bring more than 5 people or to call in when we are expecting on bringing a larger crowd, when we are just trying to promote the place and give them business. Even after we call in, we feel as though we are not as welcome as we would be with a smaller party. We have shown up multiple times, only for them to be closed for a "private party" and turned away. Another member of my family had written a 5 star review, only to be told that we are going to "give them too much business". We understand that this is run by a small family, but maybe a little appreciation for our continued support would be nice. They have consistently taken a long time to get food out. Overall, we are done trying to go back. We cannot argue that the food is top notch, but due to the nevative experiences we have had, we have decided to not return. read more

This is a Hidden Gem. Located between Bellville and Hempstead on Hwy 159. You order at the counter with Charlie, who is adorable by the way. The food is made fresh and tastes fabulous. Started off with fried mushroom and fried green tomatoes. Both are served with homemade ranch dressing. My husband had the chicken fried ribeye and was in heaven. My daughter had the rib-eye salad and she enjoyed it immensely. I had the fried shrimp and they were delish. The portions are huge and I'm excited for my leftover lunch tomorrow. Dessert is a must. I must say I had one of the best experiences I have had in a while! The atmosphere is utterly fantastic and just what I was looking for, a cool place off the beaten path. The feel of the place was nastalgic and comfortable. Charlie & wife are the most gracious and friendly hosts ever! Exactly what you'd expect "out in the country". The food was just "off-the-charts" good! I had the crabcakes due to a review, and I don't even like crabcakes; but these were absolutely wonderful. Next was the chicken salad-stuffed avacado was also fantastic. My only regret is that I did not show up with a much bigger appetite. It's a family run business they are very friendly and Mom is in the kitchen cooking! The best chicken fried steak I've ever had...and have tried many! We also enjoyed the Dr Pepper cake as a dessert. If you drive past this place without stopping, you're missing out. Food was exceptional with a wide variety. It's way above the typical small TX town diner and above most big city restaurants in terms of quality and variety. Completely unpretentious, it feels like eating at a friends house. There should be a line out the door. Salads were big and fresh. Desserts looked homemade and although we didn't try them, I'm sure they are to the same level as the food. I stopped in here after seeing this place on Google Maps when I was planning my route to College Station. It looked like the sort of cute country place that I wanted to try, so I decided to step in for lunch on a Friday. I was blown away by the kindness of the husband and wife who own this place. They've managed to make a really sweet little business for themselves, and they loving latest one another as they explained the daily menu for me. I ended up ordering the fried chicken sandwich, and it came out completely hot and fresh. It came with some of the most delicious salt and pepper potato chips.
