They were good but not great. My entree was grilled chicken breast and veggies. The chicken was decent but veggies were burned. My husband ordered grilled pork chops, salad & veggies. His pork chops were overcooked & tough. His veggies were also burned and his salad had brown pieces. My husband NEVER leaves food on his plate but he did here. That means he really did not like it. I've eaten here since I was a kid, and I'm in my twenties now. It's always had such good comforting food from their hamburgers, huge chicken fried steaks, grilled veggies, and their shrimp fried rice. It's always so yummy. The restaurant is a great place to meet, low lighting. Tons of parking available. The service is always really good too everytime I come. It is a small town restaurant so sometimes a wait, but always worth it! I highly recommend! read more

They added an 18% gratuity fee, which we understood because that usually happens with a party of six or more. The waiter said he would check with the manager. The manager came out and said it was because it was the weekend and when the bill is more then $100 they "usually just add it." We told her that it should be stated somewhere upfront, because it's fine, but customers shouldn't be expected to just know that. Then they gave my sister the wrong receipt they gave her someone else's receipt who had already paid before us and that table didn't get charged the gratuity fee. Keep in mind, the manager said the fee was added because it's the weekend. We checked the menu, and it said the fee will be added for a party of six or more, which is normal in restaurants, but there was only four of us. Food was okay. Our experience was out of this world..... It was only maybe 2 hours ago so I'm still in shock . LoL we had asked the waitress to make us an appetizer platter with fried corn nuggets with fried mushrooms with fried okra and cheese sticks and she asked us several times are we sure and it's like yes she said we only have certain platters it's like well can you make us one and she said no problem. They have great staff, very friendly but the food is not as good as it use to be. My guess is new owners, there side portions are very skimpy especially the French fries. When ordering 2 pieces of fish you get a small serving of fries. This week we ordered 4 pieces of fish and got an even smaller serving of fries. Which were fried harder than usual and full of fish grease because the fried fish is placed on top of the fries. I do not like that at all. Why not put the fries on the side or in a separate container. Also, ordered salad and coleslaw- they were out of crackers?? Of all things. I'm a truck driver who doesn't often come across an Italian place other than your average franchise joint. I hesitated to go but noticed a bunch of cars in the parking lot so I decided to try it. This place is worth a visit again! I had a Cesar salad, Chicken parmigiana, and a side of sausage. I was a bit disappointed in the chicken as the cutlet seemed like one of those frozen patties but the sauce and spaghetti were good. The sausage was good as well and their was a good portion in the bowl. Plenty of sauce as well. I loved the fresh baked bread to start as well. Great meal after a day in Navasota. Serve was perfect and the fried okra is fresh and hand breaded. We had the chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak. The gravy was SO good and was the perfect topper to our crispy meals. The bar was nicely stocked and the beer was cold. Couldn't ask for much more. I am all about the locally owned hidden gems and this is one of those old school roadhouse joints that you need praise them, Joe Camel. An unassuming single story aged strip mall next to the dialysis centre (get out your Juul and bear with me) walking into this local hot spot dotting the highway is like walking back into time when life was simpler, waitresses were receptive to being called darling and/or sweetheart, and a lunch beer was $4 a pop. Wait. One of those things seems amiss in 2k19. Roadside diners along the lines of places that Dean Winchester would visit for non-pie dishes always include fried things, and fried things that are delicious. It is not always a perfect circle; sometimes being a venn diagram between the two. However, HS&S makes their casual dining fare the perfect circle where fried foods came to town just to be delicious in the service of the big man downstairs, or upstairs, as suits your preferences - we don't judge here. Which is what brought me here. A recommendation for the finest fried seafood in six counties. And I was already in my windproof Harley jacket on a rainy cold day for other reasons so I didn't need to throw on less conspicuous outerwear to dine at a place like this so it was all aces from start to finish. They have lunch specials which include two sides - freedom fries as your standard one spot option, and your second spot option a choice between a house salad (limited dressings available) or coleslaw. Yo homey, do the salad so much. Even with the limited dressing choices it is far superior to the coleslaw. In fact, the coleslaw is the one and only thing you could ding this joint points on at all ... besides the byzantine mess they created with the condiment squeezy tubes on the fried food orders, which still is giving me the vapours about those devilish shenanigans and requires its own attention in a separate paragraph. Roadside diners have few rules throughout the legerdemain of Americana, where food that was good and hot rewarded a hard workin' man. 1. Bikers are welcome, even in a cut with colours; 2. If in a fist fight you get blood on someone else's food you need to buy them a new basket AND say you are sorry because that hot zima soup got the best of you; and 3. Condiments come in coloured squeezy tubes so even if #u #is #illiterate you know what is what based on sight alone rather than those multisyllabic queer French things fancier places stamp onto their tubes with a labelmaker. This is a standard American thing about how the colours go: Ketchup is in the red tube, hence the red. Mustard is in the yellow tube, hence the heckin' but still mellow yellow. And mayo is in white because of stereotypes. You know what I am talking about, white bread and all of that. This joint instead likes to fuck with you real nice though and you won't see it coming unless you read Uncle Daniel's yelp review right here. Ketchup is in the red squeezy tube, real nice to lure you into thinking they follow the normal rules of the road that have applied to #merica since Grande Papito Ben Franklin. Just after you get real cozy with that they get you with the one-two punch of tartar sauce in the white tube and cocktail sauce in the yellow. Exsqueeze me, baking soda? No hon. This aggression will not stand, these colours do not run. Motion to put mustard in the gat dang yellow tube so you can put mustard on your fries. Sure, I would look real out of place if I expected poutine fries here and ordered in French real arrogant like. But mustard? This is mustard country, population Yoü and I. People around here squirt mustard all over their wieners at 4 July cookouts in their backyards and similar patriotic events out in public like mattress sales. But instead these fries right here have cocktail sauce all over them, from a yellow tube, rather than mustard as the good lord below expected because that is how things have worked for hundreds of years among civilized peoples just trying to eat their freedom fries in peace. Condiment disaster aside, the fried food is delicious and the waitresses (for some reason we had three working our table for a few daydrinking beers and a lot of fried food?) were great. Except at the very end the third came by to collect our condiment squeeze tubes to pass them on to the next table and she was too busy she didn't look like she had time for "the talk" about colour coding mustard to yellow, and how everything else are filthy lies for others and their freedom fries. I guess this place needs more squeezy tubes since tables have to share; and get the right colours for what you are putting in them! Fried foods are unbelievable right here. But bring home-mustard (or work-mustard if that is where you are stashing the good stuff) if you want mustard on your freedom fries cuz they ain't got none, and cocktail sauce will not do on those bad boys. However the waitress forgot our appetizers along with never refilled a single drink had to wait for ice cubes to melt to finish washing down my dinner . I'm wondering if the owners or managers have changed cause it has never been this bad.. how ever the waitress could tell my family wasn't satisfied with the food . So I was quite drank with her .. after we waiting at the table for 15 minutes to bring us the check we decided just to head to the cashier which was very rude and unprofessional... if the is the owner or manager in charge between the food and how people react will run a business into the ground . HS&S is our"stop for lunch on the way to Carmine. Your basic fried seafood kind of place. Booths with sprung springs( but aren't they all) There are 3 men to every woman here. Quiet. A nice mixture of industrial workers, farmers, Prairie bee A& M folks. We always get the 2 fried catfish with 6 fried shrimp and split it. Fast friendly service. Good food. Fish is super crispy on the outside & perfect amount of moisture on the inside. Seasoned just rite (never over salty like most places). This isn't a fancy place. Who would think that the small town of Hempstead would have a very good seafood restaurant. But they do. Brother and I out for a motorcycle ride stopped in here. I started with a bowl of shrimp n fish gumbo and someone on that kitchen knows how to fix a gumbo. It was righteous. Had go to the bread to sop up the juice. Then we went with a grilled seafood platter of blackened catfish n shrimp with grilled veggies. Everything was fresh and loaded with flavor. We saw others with huge portions of fried everything. The food is awesome and they have a wide range on the menu. The seafood is definitely on point and ranges from Cajun to regular to Vietnamese. They have a whole section of their menu that is straight up Vietnamese. You can get an amazingly fresh large hamburger with fries for only 10 bucks. They also sell crawfish by the pound and they're very good. They have several TVs and the place is always clean. Their bathrooms are great and there are a great location in town. read more

It has a basic interior of a large room with another eating area that is somewhat separated by a wall. It's menu consists of seafood (75 percent) and steaks and other meats (25 percent). The seafood can be grilled or fried. I decided to order some catfish and shrimp along with corn nuggets and a small salad. The salad was good. When the seafood arrived I realized that it was going to be a lot of grease for my system. Now don't get me wrong, it's what I ordered and was a very generous amount of seafood. It was good but with the corn nuggets was too much fried food for me. If you like fried seafood you would have liked this. I wish I had tried some of their gumbo or étouffée. I ordered the Full Chicken Fried chicken. I thought I was getting the whole chicken, fried. What I got was two very thin (1/4" thick, breading was thicker then the chicken) pieces of I think chicken breast ( not sure). I refused the order, they give me a chance to order something else. Grilled salmon is very good but the waitress we had wasn't. Three of us sat at a table by the wall and even though the sign stated "please seat yourself" we were asked to move to a table because large church groups MAY come in. We moved and three other people came in and sat at the same place we were moved from yet they were not asked to move. The only difference in them and us was a matter of melanin. I mentioned it as I checked out and was told again that a large church group could've come in. Yet, the "could've" didn't apply to the other people. We all are paying with the same green money thus we shouldn't have been asked to move for no apparent reason. Stopped for a quick dinner and were very pleased with the quality of food and the skilled preparation. Both my hubby and I splurged on fried seafood. We started with the garlic bread and etouffe sauce. It was good but we probably would have been better to save the room for dinner. Hubby had a variety platter with salad and fries and I had shrimp with scallops with dirty rice, slaw and hushpuppies. All the seafood was great. I will save you the time and money if you're about to eat here. When I was there the place seemed to be ran by young adults, which is fine however they tend to get together at the checkout stand and talk instead of serving. They were out of most of their beers and wines and their selection was terrible (This is just my opinion but I like IPA) Let's start with the jalapeno poppers I started off with. They came out really quick and I'm a huge fan of these (poppers in general) Once they cooled off and I was able to taste them they were terrible. They tasted like they had been nooked and tasted freezer burnt. After addressing this with the server he was VERY HONEST and said I would stay away from the mashed potatoes because they are instant unless I got the baked potato for my main dish if I didn't like the poppers. (This server was great and was very honest regarding the quality of food that I was expecting to pay for this meal). I got the 9 scallops meal with grilled vegetables (which the vegetables were AWESOME) and the corn critters (these were really good but a couple of them were cold when I took a bite) The scallops looked so good and large on the menu and I love me some scallops. We have passed this place so many times over the past few years going between Hockley and Brenham and never stopped. I'm so glad that a friend invited us to try this seafood restaurant in Hempstead. My 13 year old grandson tore up his T-Bone, I didn't waste anytime cutting through 3 pieces of fried catfish and fries, my wife's grilled Tilapia was just perfect. What a lovely discovery! The fried fish and shrimp were so good-far exceeded expectations! We shared a shrimp cocktail which had huge tasty shrimp. Even the hush puppies were worth sneaking into the take home box. The service was friendly and quick. The restaurant was clean. Prices were very reasonable. We will be back to try the steaks or grilled seafood Dad Gum, the hits just keep on coming. Stopped in tonight and we both decided on the chef salad with boiled shrimp. Yum!
