We had a really good time at Hillside Pub. We split a full rack of ribs. The ribs were perfect as were the cole slaw, pasta salad and fries that came with them! It was a perfect meal to split. The cole slaw also went really well with the barbeque which is important. Our waitress was great and prompt. They were serving Maine brewing's Lunch which is a particular favorite of mine. Easy parking. High marks all around. If you go, just a heads up - there are no low chairs. If you have any type of mobility problem that won't allow you to climb into a tall chair or a booth with a step you will have a hard time sitting inside here. read more

Hillside Pub, just off I-93 and Mass Route 138 in Canton, is a terrific local watering hole that's a perfect place for a casual meal or a few adult beverages whether you're a lifelong Canton resident or just passing through as a guest at the Hilton Homewood Suites next door. Most nights, Hillside Pub is filled with crowds of regulars from the neighborhood -- popping in for a few drinks or tasty and filling pub food served by very friendly staff at a very reasonable price in a casual and welcoming ambiance. The restaurant is small and the ambience can be noisy (particularly if there's a popular sporting event going on) as there is no separation between the bar area and the dining area. The beer, wine, and liquor selection offered is comprised of mass-produced brands noteworthy only for their unnoteworthiness -- but the barstaff knows how to pour a perfect pint of Guinness. The menu puts an emphasis on simple and casual dishes -- with a variety of pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and pub favorites like shepherd's pie, sirloin steak tips, or fish & chips. The teriyaki chicken wings were served freshly fried and were pretty tasty. My dining companion said her burger at Hillside Pub was was cooked perfectly as requested and was one of the best she's had in a while. I'd have to agree with her. A local friend of ours who met us for dinner remarked that his sirloin steak tips were slightly overcooked (medium well rather than medium rare) and his chicken noodle soup was underwhelming, but it seemed to me that both of them were still tasty enough for him to clean his plate. With its understated exterior and very casual ambience, this isn't the sort of establishment you bring friends, romantic interests, or business associates if you're trying to trying to impress them with an upscale meal. Yet, due in large part to its tasty food, good service, consistent quality and modest prices, I'm a fan. PRO TIP: Although Hillside Pub has a Children's Menu featuring chicken fingers, hot dogs, or grilled cheese sandwiches, there are no booster seats or highchairs available and the high top seating throughout the restaurant isn't great for very young kids. read more

I just enjoyed lunch here late on a Sunday afternoon, and genuinely enjoyed it! It was a nice day out, so I sat outside at one of the picnic tables that are set up on their patio. My server, who is named Kira, gave me outstanding service. She was attentive, friendly, and made sure that my unsweetened iced tea was refilled as often as I wished. I ordered the deluxe cheeseburger with fries, and it was cooked perfectly, very fresh, and absolutely delicious. I was in town for a wedding, and the front desk clerk of the hotel, where I stayed specifically recommended this place to me. I, in turn, and recommending it to you! The Hillside was always a monthly favorite for this retired couple. Good food, affordable but most of all a warm & hospitable environment. That all changed last night. We found the first empty table which seats four & our server announced that we would be moved if a large crowd came in. This is a first come, first serve place! No reserve sign on the table. I asked if this was a new policy & yes it is. The server avoided us after that. We should have left but knew this was our last time coming. Traveling for business in the Boston area and stumbled upon this relatively small bar and grill. The waitress who helped me -possibly the owner but not 100% sure was very attentive. The food was affordable and plentiful. Buffalo wings were spot on! Crispy 12 wings with sauce on the side were a great start. A great little Irish pub oasis outside of Boston. What I liked: 1. Two IPAs on tap out of eight craft beer taps. IMHO, they had the two winning taps (Fiddlehead IPA and Guinness. 2. The intimate nature of the place. As a reviewer noted, the place looks like nothing from the outside. But when I walked in on a Sunday noon visit, there is a table of Irish folks speaking English and Gaelic interchangeably. The place had loads of other first generation Irish at the bar as well. 3. Good value. I ordered the fish and chips and it came with a generous amount of fish. My wife ordered a Jameson and coke and it was a generous pour made in front of us. The Fiddlehead is $6.50 a pint. The Guinness is $7 for a 20 oz pour..! They have free Wi-Fi (just have to ask for the password). I would definitely return here the next time I pass through the area. read more

Some friends and I stumbled upon Hillside after having dinner at Trillium just down the road. We were looking for somewhere nearby to grab a few drinks after Trillium closed for the night. Hillside kind of looks like a dive from the outside and is located randomly behind a gas station and not really near any other retail business. That said, inside it's small, bright, and cozy with a few high tops, a long bar and lots of TVs with different sports on each. Since we'd already eaten we just got drinks. As an Irish-American, I was thrilled to see they had Guinness and Smithwicks on tap. They also have a full bar but we all stuck with beer. Honestly the best part was the people. Both staff and patrons were very friendly and you get the vibe that this is a place that caters to regulars 90% of the time. If I lived a tad closer I'd definitely like to add myself to their number. Saving my last star for when I can return to try the food but definitely recommend Hillside for a beer if you're in the area. read more

This place is a hidden gem, right behind the Mobil station. A must stop if your in the area. Great small pub with friendly service and great food. Burgers are excellent hand made service on a fresh bakery roll. Hot crispy fries as a side. Steak tip plate for around $14 served with 2 sides. Tips prepared perfectly with rice and fresh vegetables. What a wonderful place! I'm at a loss on where to begin because so many things made this place unique and amazing. Four of us arrived 6:00 on a Saturday and the place was hopping. It appears to be the "local" pub for families, friends, and neighbors...great vibe. We found some "open" space in the middle of the room and waited for a table to open up. . The owner spotted us, came right over and assured us we'd have a table. He took our drink orders and suggested we tuck into a corner so as not to get jostled around. It was amazing to watch. Over the next 10 minutes I watched the owner very gently move people around. He did it in a way that I guarantee half the people didn't even know they'd moved. He made sure groups stayed intact but maximized the use of each table. Presto a table appeared and we were seated. The hour we were there we saw the owner work the room, he was talking and laughing with everyone. It was the owner, one waitress and a bar tender moving non-stop keeping everyone with drinks and food. The food: The fish and chips was great! A tiny little place with lots of great people - guests and staff alike. If you don't get a seat right away, consider waiting a few minutes. It will be worth it. This place has amazing food and fantastic portions. The first night I ordered Shepards Pie and it was so popular, they ran out just before me. So I got the new special, the Mixed Grill with Chicken, Sausage and Steak Tips. It was so good, I'm almost glad they ran out of the Shepards Pie! In fact, the Steak Tips were so amazing I got them on my next visit. I'm not in town for long, but I find myself here most nights for a few beers, watch the hockey and just chatting with great people. If you like Irish Pubs or Pubs in general, you will love this place. As a visitor to the area, I was made to feel welcome immediately - even if they did tease me for being a Leaf's fan. Dude should not be running a restaurant or any business at that. Denying people service because he thinks we drank when we clearly didn't a drop of alcohol. Not to mention the grief he gives if you drop something on the floor. Don't let the condensation from your drink drip to the floor, he'll personally flip out on you like its your fault. We stayed at a hotel close to Hillside and went there five times out of the seven days we were there. Such an amazing place! Staff were super friendly, especially the manager Mike who couldn't do enough for us. That special might get replaced by a new one at the drop of a shamrock. You might have to wait ... minutes for a 'seat' ???? For a table ! But the food, staff and the Guinness are all worth the wait. I've been frequenting this pub for several years. The food and service is consistently good. Best chili I've had anywhere except my kitchen. The best fish & chips I've had anywhere. Perfect pint of Guinness. This recent visit I introduced a friend up from Florida to the great food and atmosphere. He had the shepherds pie. He barely touched it and took it to go. Said it was good. It looked good. I got my favorite pizza to go An Irish pizza that is like a loaded baked potato pizza. I heat it up for breakfast with an omelette on top. Our server was very attentive and helpful as were other staff members. This place is real Irish with many "Brogues" about. The parking area is small as is the seating area. It fills up quickly and it gets loud. I personally love everything about this place. I'm 45 minutes away but I'm always glad when I make the trip . read more

Not Good Let me start by saying this is supposed to be an old time Irish Pub and rally it's like a hotel restaurant/bar owned by an Irish family. Nothing about the place says Irish pub. We ordered a couple of beers and followed a few Yelpers that encouraged me to order the steak tips. This was a mistake. Below average untender tips with what might be the worst sides I have ever had. I ordered a very simple side of mashed potatoes and a veg. Let me explain this. This places idea of mashed potatoes is boiling potatoes and mashing them up with no salt, pepper, milk, or butter. We are in the area for a skating tournament and stumbled upon this pub. We had lunch there two days in a row! The place was packed both days - for good reason. We experienced efficient , friendly service and super delish pub fare. The owner was charming and welcoming and we will 100% return to this spot the next time we are in the area. This pub owner came to the door and denied myself and my coworkers service because "we had too much" for one, three of us were on the phone with our wives outside the bar and the other two had gone inside and were waiting on us to go in before getting seated. None of us had drank anything. I will not ever give this restaurant my business. I do not recommend to anyone.
