My brother in law and I had a great experience at Colossal Sandwich Shop. 1st, the name is true, the sandwiches are really huge. They're also amazing. I had the cubano sandwich and my brother in law had the steak and cheese. I thought my cuban was delicious and my brother in law wouldn't stop talking about his. The staff is also incredibly nice. They were patient with us regarding our orders and answered all of our questions. This dive sandwich shop has been on my places to try for awhile. I love to support small local business and especially ones who do good for their community. Of course and thank you for the offer!!!! (That type of service is becoming far too rare these days). The menu consists of about 10 specialty sandwiches and some come with the size option of half or large. There is a refrigerator with some tea, canned sodas, and water as well as a small selection of pies & brownies. I got the alotta mufleatta which came in one size. It was massive and soooooo good! I couldn't finish it but did my best . I also enjoyed trying Mrs. Vicks spicy dill potato chips which I hadn't seen before. The bread is toasty and buttered and gave me a light buttered lip gloss experience that I do not regret. We also got the italian grinder and mid-cities steak sandwich which were all enjoyed. Portions are BIG. The staff we encountered were so nice, welcoming and helpful. We couldn't finish our sandwiches and went up to counter for wrap/to go container and they wrapped the sandwiches and put in a bag with some ruffle potato chips and peppermints. While we were there, a lady came in to pick up her sandwiches and told them she was taking lunch to her son at school who had requested them over McDonalds or chick fil a. Checked out this spot when a friend mentioned they heard about it. The owner was the one behind the register and that man is simply awesome. Kind, welcoming and gracious. Let me know I could make any adjustments I needed to any sandwich which I am incredibly picky so I loved that offer and understanding. I got an ooey gooey and it was delicious I added turkey to it. I'm so sad that this one just didn't live up to its name for us. We road tripped just to try this sandwich shop after hearing about it on FB groups for a while. We ordered the mid cities cheese steak and the Italian grinder. Both whole sandwiches. I'll start with the mid cities cheese steak. First the bun wasn't super fresh. But they brushed it with butter and grilled it so it was crunchy on the grilled side and almost seemed stale otherwise. I pulled some apart for the baby and it just wasn't soft even on the inside. There was an ok amount of meat but it tasted like grease and salt. And very minimal peppers and onions if any onions at all. The Italian Grinder was just a cold sandwich with what seemed like cheaper Italian meats. Not sure why they called it a grinder. There were no Italian peppers or dressing to make it a grinder. We were less than satisfied with our $43 lunch. The prices on the menu are not correct, and you do not get chips with your sandwich. You have to pay a dollar for the little bag. I saw the rave reviews and decided I had to check it out. The result was mixed. I ordered a small Mid-Cities Steak And Cheese. Good news it tasted great. I've seen this posted all over Fort Worth Foodies but it's not close by where we live, unfortunately. We happened to be in their neck of Fort Worth adjacent and decided to stop in for a "snack". He said he would have wanted more pepperoni and salami as the ham and turkey overpowered the meats he loves. Why 5 stars? Because they killed it with the steak and cheese. --- --- --- This could certainly be called a Phill Cheesesteak, depending on who you ask. And to be honest, I've never lived Philly Cheesesteaks. They are usually pretty dry, IMO. So while I wanted to try the Mid-Cities Steak and Cheese, because it was the top highlight on Yelp, I was tempted to go with something else. But I had to make a quick decision and just went with the top dog. It turns out, Colossal does a great version of this sandwich. It's not dry at all, aided by the melted cheese in every bite. I would happily eat this on a regular basis if I wasn't a couple hundred miles away. I met an old colleague here, which served as a decent halfway point between Dallas and Fort Worth. Is that why it's called mid-cities?! It's a humble place in a strip mall, but the reviews don't lie -- the food is great. The only thing I didn't love was the cheesecake that's brought in from a local vendor. I was actually standing in line while he brought in the order for the day into the little mini fridge next to the checkout area. They started out in a little stand nearby, moved into this larger location with dine in options, and now have a second location in Ft. Worth. Plus we really enjoy having a quality locally owned sandwich shop nearby when we can't make it out to our further out older favorites! The colossal sandwich shop owner does a great job with this place, and staff has always been great when we've come tried them out. Many of the sandwiches on the menu are described as "gooey." Take them for their word on this and grab a fork! A lot of the meat and cheese oozed gooily (yes, that's a real word. I looked it up.) out of my sandwich and I ate that as well as the sandwich. One word about the online menu: The sandwiches are available in a half-sized version at a lower price. This visit I decided to try the Cubano. The sandwich contained all the requisite Cuban ingredients but the pork was thickly sliced, hard to bite, tough, and not very flavorful. The sandwich is described as hand pressed. I'm not sure how it was supposedly pressed as it showed no signs of a pressing as with a true Cuban sandwich. The bun was like that of any typical sub sandwich. I took half home and the next day heated up my panini pan and gave it a true Cuban pressing which smashed that sucker flat as a pancake and crisped up the surface of the bun to crunchy, toasted perfection. This second half of the sandwich was then very close to a genuine Cuban sandwich (except for the pork). I have to wonder if the young people building this sandwich have ever had the genuine article to know what a pressed Cuban sandwich is supposed to be like. As with my previous Muffelata, this sandwich was generously loaded with the meats and cheese. No complaint there! I shall return! read more
