Oh WOW...I found Denise on IG when I did a search on Balayage Portland. I have been searching for someone who could give me that natural sun kissed look that I had when I was a kid with blonde hair. Let me just say that I don't "speak" hair. I seem to ask for one thing and always get another. I hate striped highlights and yet that seems to be what I end up with because people have foiled my hair. The other problem is that it will look one way framing my face but different in the back. Then finally my hair has been over processed and compromised. Too many highlights have pulled the curls right out of my hair and I need someone who can help reduce that damage. So these were some of my gripes. Then I found Denise who is an expert. No....I mean really. She teaches others how to hand paint "Balayage" hair. She also uses products like Olaplex and K18 to help preserve and condition the hair. Denise listened to me and had me come in to consult about my hair. I knew she wouldn't be cheap and I knew that she was booked solid but I am so happy to say I was able to get an appt. I also don't need to come in every 8 weeks. These highlights grow naturally and will only need to be redone every 6 months with just some toner to refresh it. (Hey I'm starting to speak hair because she explained things to me!!) I'm so happy but look at the photos for yourself. They speak louder than my review. read more

I love my stylist, have been going to her for years. Not giving you her name because she can't take any new customers! Denise, the owner, spends alot of time vetting new stylists before they earn an opportunity to work there. The parking lot is small and cramped and there are rude customers who park their huge vehicles in the lot illegally blocking the driveway entrance and taking up multiple spaces. So 5 stars for hair care but be prepared to navigate the parking, if you can walk there is a fair amount of street parking available. read more

I had an absolutely horrid experience. I asked for highlights and lowlights. Provided photos, and we discussed the color thoroughly. It took Briana over THREE AND A HALF HOURS just to put the foils in, then another hour to process and dry it. My hair came out stark white! She did not use any lowlights and completely bleached my hair! Then when it was time to pay, she asked me what time I got there, then VISIBLY counted in her head and charged ME for HER TIME! I should've charged her for my time. This whole ordeal took 4 hours and 22 minutes! And then it cost me $275! Bear in mind, I have extremely short layered hair. This whole process should've been done in less than an hour and a half for about $110. What a nightmare! Do not go to this place! read more

Besides the fact that the lighting of this salon is the worst I've ever seen. If you're having a bad day, don't go in there, otherwise you will leave feeling worse. Here we go: 1st time - the hair cut was so bad that other clients looked at me like they were seeing a ghost. I left with multiple gaps between the different lengths, with some of them sticking out from the top of my ears and some all the way dawn to my waist line. I couldn't believe my eyes. And I didn't ask for layers, but the hairdresser thought she was doing something incredible. Incredibly ugly is what it was. It wasn't even symmetrical. 2nd time - (yes I'm so nice I gave them a second chance). I asked for a color consultation, ONLY in case someone was free for a few minutes. The owner didn't like my request and said (passive-aggressively) that she had a customer on her chair and that I'd have to schedule a consult for her to give me proper advice. I wasn't expecting her to stop seeing her client. I wasn't even expecting her to step away from her client and give me a lesson about how she never leaves her customers on the chair. After her customer service TED talk, I was at the reception scheduling a consult, another employee, who was very kind and soft spoken, came in and offered me a consult. It took her 5min to tell me what I needed. And as I was at the reception scheduling a visit with her, she went to consult with the owner about prices, and when she came back she said the owner suggested that I should cut my hair way shorter to 'get rid of the warm tones'. Well, although she over heard me saying I wanted d to correct the reds, I never asked for a hair cut consult, but rather a color correction consult... And plus, wasn't she so busy with another customer that she couldn't give me proper advice?? I didn't like the owner of this salon and I will not be going there again. I will unfortunately cancel my appointment with the nice employee just because I know the owner will be the one benefiting from most of my cash. read more

I rarely leave reviews but I had to give a shout out to Dusti. Today was my first appointment at Colour Authority (other than a consult). Dusti really made me feel at ease and really knew her stuff! I felt comfortable with my hair in her hands. I'm a natural brunette gone blonde and my last hair stylist just never got what I wanted. My hair was way too gold (ick!) and Dusti put in a lot of work to get rid of that today. She took the time to do it right and I really appreciate it. I love my new color. On top of that, she was just incredibly friendly and professional. So glad I found her! The only downside is that I definitely have to book in advance. Diana is absolutely wonderful. She isn't listed on their website and it's a shame (although it ensures I'm able to see her when I need to!). She is absolutely wonderful. Knows exactly what she's doing, doesn't charge an arm and a leg, and is genuinely interested in making her customers happy. She clearly has a lot of experience and is able to take dark (almost black) thick Hispanic hair like my own and turn it into a beautiful blended blonde balayage. It took 2 visits but even after the first one, it was absolutely stunning and wearable. Love her work and am so happy I found her!! She also does NOT cut more than you ask her!! I went to Colour Authority in June 2018. I was very pleased with the cut and color from Stylist Leah. My second appointment was for today. I had it down for 10:30 but when I arrived they told me it was for 11:30. So I left and came back. I was still waiting until almost noon. And then left. My time is important to me. It's a beautiful place and they do beautiful color. But this episode left me feeling disrespected and that they didn't care. Maybe because I am a new client. I am not sure. I get my nails done by Hannah every 2-3 weeks and she is so detailed, creative, and skilled. She helped me grow my natural nails out while keeping them strong and giving them a great shape. Where to start? This place is fantastic! I wanted to get my hair colored and had found this place based on reviews and proximity to where I live. A Colour Authority had wonderful reviews, something that eased my anxiety as someone who had never did a drastic hair change! I got a groupon to see Fern here yesterday. I was excited to try this place out because usually I drive a fair ways to see someone else in NoPo. She's great, and I love her, but this place is so much closer to me. I was looking forward to knowing if I could ditch the drive and swap it for a hop skip and a jump! Fern was pretty awesome, especially as I came in with, as my friend called it, my Hair-topus (a giant strangling squid of a hair mess). I had the great idea that I was you know, going to experiment and let it grow out. For the funsies. Unfortunately, I'm lazy/not hair-educated and I'd been pretty much limited to putting my giant mass of hair into 3 "styles" (throwing it into a very uh. robust. ponytail. twisting it into a very "energetic" braid, and stuffing it into a giant claw). None of those are actually styles, sadly. As my hair-topus was now beginning to rule me rather than the other way around, I decided it was time to end our relationship. Fern was really nice about it and didn't complain that I had come in with this giant hair wreck for her to fix. Instead, she put an efficient end to it, and beyond that, made me look p. darn good with my new layered short hair! I know so because the next day, when I went to do my weekly volunteering, all the people who knew me commented on my shorn locks with statements like, "Looking sharp!" Confirmation! This will definitely be my new stop for hair styling. I really recommend it, especially if you live in this area and may have been, like me, driving kind of far out. The Colour Authority and Alex Greco have been my hair salvation for many years. I first met Alex after seeing three different specialists who were trying to correct a burn-out from a bad blond color job that went from bad to worse. Alex helped me recover while keeping my big head of curly hair intact. (Others told me to cut if all off!) I am bi-coastal and have seen many professional colorists over the years. I have paid twice and even three times as much when I am in S. Florida for the same type of job (highlights/lowlights with cut and styling) only to be disappointed. In fact, the amount of times that I have had to return to Portland to get my color "corrected" by Alex after these terrible hair appointments is just embarrassing. The Colour Authority is just that - a drama-free, educated, friendly staff who go out of their way to make sure you are happy and well taken care of and they also use Goldwell color care line. Alex is amazing and I highly recommend her. She has a passion for what she does and the staff love her. I have overheard the manager privately telling her not only how great her work is, but how organized and business savvy she is. While she's young, she has corrected the work of much older, seasoned "specialists" who have awards at their stations or on their websites. Her talent is commendable. Just the most amazing salon I've ever been to in my life. Friendly staff with a smile on their faces. I don't know a lot about color and my hair had been badly colored at a different salon. I went in thinking I wanted to match my roots to my brassy mess and they totally fixed the problem and rooted out my hair. My stylist took her time assessing my hair and even asked other stylists for a second opinion. My highlights went from looking white and faded to golden and my hair looks great now. It now matches my skin tone. I totally recommend this salon for girls with Asian hair. So excited to go back and build on this look. read more

I have been going to the Colour Authority to get my hair done for three years now! I love the stylist, Denise who is also the owner. Her technique is cutting edge and current with styles of my generation. I can't tell you how many times a month someone will comment on how much they love my hair! It's great that people notice my hair so much that they would stop to tell me! I highly recommend trying this salon. Not only is Denise good, but I've seen her staff and they are all gorgeous, stylish and good at what they do. I recently had my hair cut and colored and I have really long hair. I absolutely love it! I just referred my Mom and she had her hair done a couple of days ago and LOVES her hair! I don't feel like either of us are easily impressed when it comes to getting our hair done. But, I have been to SeAnn Torrence a couple of times now and love the way she does my hair.
