This place is misleading. It was more expensive than we expected based on Yelp. The server was extremely nice but over worked. He forgot things that we asked for, rarely refreshed out drinks, and must have delayed putting in our order because we waited almost 25 minutes for our food. Sadly the food wasn't what we expected either. For a place called the Common man the food was trying desperately to be gourmet. I ordered the herb stuffed chicken which turned out to be bland, with over cooked chicken and a mushy panko breading. It was served with extremely mushy and gross zucchini and squash and a baked potato which was the only part of my meal than I enjoyed. Frankly if hadn't been so hungry I wouldn't have eaten it. We went to this place on a whim while taking a day trip to NH and absolutely loved it. The ambience, the character, the staff, the food, the drinks. All very good. It has a very welcoming and comforting feel; nice linens on the table, funky folk art decor, beautiful wood trim. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, yet not overly intrusive. There were free cheese & crackers which were delicious and fresh. My boyfriend had the lobster chowder and I had the baked onion soup to start. Both were delicious and filling. I had the Grandpa's BLT and loved how it was prepared. Warm, fresh and on ciabatta bread. YUM. My boyfriend had a burger (can't remember which) and he was equally satisfied with his meal. I ordered a couple Common Man Ales and LOVED them. Crisp, tasty, perfectly filling. I wish this restaurant was closer to us (we live in MA) but we definitely will go back. Common Man restaurants are on the whole good. Their model of expanding without losing their uniqueness and feel is admirable. I am writing this review however after a disappointing experience this evening at their Concord location. The food was as you'd typically expect with Common Man, consistent. Better than a chain restaurant. The service was good, casual, not rushed. The disappointment came as a result of redeeming a coupon. My son's play lacrosse locally. To raise money for their program they sold coupon books featuring local establishments including Common Man. My son, with some pride about the value of these books, wanted to go to Common Man. When the check arrived they'd mistakenly applied the coupon. When gently reminded of this the waitress graciously sent the manager over who insisted on their interpretation. We quietly paid and left for the evening. My son was unnecessarily apologetic and didn't understand what had happened. Explaining to him what occurred was an unfortunate but necessary lesson on how customer service is the largest determinant of customer satisfaction. For a savings of about $13.00 a manager at the establishment lost a family of customers. Maybe not a big deal to them but what an unfortunate way to operate. read more

We were one of the first to get there when they opened at 11:30. Despite that, we waited forever while the confused/borderline scatterbrain hostess took forever to get people seated. We finally got to our table, where apparently no waitress had been assigned. Finally, after we witnessed the same hostess bitching out a very nice lady, she assigned her to our table. We ordered, and enjoyed the crackers and cheese. When our food arrived, everything was delicious, except the vegetables were cold, AND there was a medium length Grey or blonde hair in them! My stomach turned, and as the same hostess was walking by, I tried to ask her where the ladies room was. I got an index finger in the air and some frazzled mumbling. She had an high chair emergency apparently. We spent over $70 on LUNCH for 2 people with bad food and a rude hostess. Even horrible human beings are treated with respect at the common man. Great food and atmosphere. This is the spot to eat on this side of Concord. High marks for food and higher marks for service. Portsmouth Pie is terrific and so is the chowder and crab cakes. The bartender and manager in the tavern went above and beyond with a horrible, whinny customer who ordered the pizza then complained that she meant the flatbread. Reservation's was a disaster and front desk host was very rude, food was at best cafeteria style/quality; although bar was very efficient. Very pricey for what you get. Noise level is very high. One of my favorite restaurants in Concord. Great place to take family and friends for a good meal and great atmosphere. This place is decorated like an old farmhouse and is part of the Common Man family restaurant chain based in New Hampshire. They have cheese and crackers available at the bar while you wait and they serve white chocolate at the end of your meal. They have excellent brunches too. I loved Common Man. We ate lunch here on the way to catch our flight out of Boston and wished that they had more locations where we had been staying. The lobster bisque was just to DIE for. I have a feeling it's going to be haunting my dreams for some time to come. My roast beef, bleu cheese, and fig panini was the absolute perfect balance of meat, bitter, and sweet. My husband ordered a plain ol' BLT - not the fancy one on the menu - and it cost $3.95. I think that's the cheapest thing to eat in all of New England. We called the waitress over to see if there was a mistake and they forgot to append a 1 on the beginning. Nope. The two of us had lunch in a friendly, comfortable, and tasty restaurant for $20 and got a lot of bang for the buck. The crazy lady recording in the bathroom telling corny jokes and complaining about her husband in a thick New England accent was a little weird, yes. Definitely memorable, though. This was a great local restaurant and would be one of my favorites if I lived in the area. A+++ would definitely eat again. read more

On a business trip a coworker I was traveling with was raving about this place, having been in the area before, telling me their Lobster Mac & Cheese was the best ever. So we came for dinner, I started with the Winter Harvest Salad and was sad to see it drenched in vinaigrette. It was almost swimming in the dressing and made the salad unfortunate to eat. I was able to dunk some of the rolls into it that they bring to the table, but it was just too much dressing to even be able to get to the salad and finish it. I ordered the much talked about Lobster Mac & Cheese and it did not disappoint. They really load it up with lobster meat, and good, big pieces of it! The mac & cheese itself was good but the lobster really brought out some extra flavor. I would definitely recommend this if you're a lobster lover, and who doesn't love mac and cheese? The entree was delicious but the salad was just a mess which is why I give this 3 stars instead of 4. read more

Bonnie was my waitress and she was very kind. This place reminds me of a New England style Cracker Barrel. The menu has a variety of soups, salads, and entrees. I had the lobster mac and cheese with the uncommon half salad The inside was not too busy; there's a pub side which had more activity. It was somewhat warm in the general dining room be of all the old windows. This is definitely a family oriented type of place which is nice especially when families are on vacation. The cocktails prices are very reasonable My lobster mac was not that great. Two big chicks at most and part of it was cold so it was not freshly made. The food is good. This is probably one of the better chains in NH. They have good, pretty consistent food. They have options for people with allergies such as gluten free pastas, etc. Their beer list is a little weak, especially for a place with about 4 bars. They could have a lot on tap. But they have a full bar otherwise and their "Common Man Ale", which I personally don't like. They have probably some of the best Mussels in a white wine garlic sauce that I've had. They have a decent, eclectic menu. The staff is usually nice. Common Man is known for taking over nice old farms/houses and redoing them all over NH. So each one is a little different. The one in Portsmouth isn't the same as the one in Concord, isn't the same as the one in Windham, etc. read more

2 stars because the food, for the most part, was decent. I would avoid both the broccoli and the vegetable medley- neither had flavor, they were essentially just blanched, but not well. The big issue here was with service. We recognized that the restaurant was busy at the time, attempted to be patient, but we waited over an hour for our food, which was sitting at the pass for the better part of 20 minutes and for the most part was lukewarm once we obtained it. Onto the service: our server was Logan. At initiation of service he seemed kind and competent- he was happy to accommodate our different requests and even offered solutions when problems arose. For example, we requested the truffled tater tots, but they were out so he offered French fries in a similar style. They were delicious. Next came the hour wait for our food, during which time Logan did not check on us at all. My husband had to stop him to get one refill of WATER. He never refilled any of the table's iced teas. Finally, at about 40 minutes, my aunt inquired about where our food was, he responded, "it'll be out as soon as possible, there are a lot of tables waiting," in a passive aggressive/snide tone. When the food finally came out, my meal was incorrect- I had taken Logan up on the offer of broccoli instead of vegetable medley, yet my plate was brought with vegetable medley. To Logan's credit, when notified of the issue, he immediately returned to the kitchen to have the issue rectified. The kitchen then simply scraped the vegetable medley off the plate and returned it with broccoli, which would have been fine except it also took half of the gravy off my plate. But, at this point, beggars could not be choosers. We all finished our meals and had to flag Logan down to request the check. He brought the check and payment was immediately brought out, we inquired if we needed to bring the check to the front. He responded rudely with, "no just leave it there and I'll take care of it," then proceeded to clear plates from the table instead. Eventually, he took the payment and returned with the receipt. We left him a 0 tip- a thing we never do- for passive aggressive behavior, poor service, and a general lack of care and attention. read more

I am a huge fan of The Common Man family of restaurants. In the last 20 plus years I've been to nearly all of them and none disappoint. The service is always exceptional and the food is always great. We ordered signature cocktails and some items from both the regular and seasonal menu. The Lobster Corn Chowder was excellent as always. But, by far, the highlight of the meal was from the Seasonal Selections. A vegetable ragu with fresh grilled polenta. We added grilled salmon. It was just wonderful. Thank you as always. read more

This place was absolutely amazing. I went here with a friend on a night that we went camping and it just blew my mind. I can't remember the last time I had such great food. When you walk it, its warm and homey with a buzz of people talking and laughing and although it was a Friday night it was quiet. Which was great. Our server was this really cute guy who wanted to go school at New England Culinary Institute (my alma mater) and so we hit it off right away. He was so charming and helpful. I had a bowl of the corn chowder with lobster meat and honey chipolte short ribs - Have I died and gone to heaven? They cut all of their own meat on site! The wine and food combo was so exquisite they do such a wonderful job on their menu. Also their mac and cheese - OMG OMG OMG. Check out their website for the recipes!!! We have been to the C-Man many times over the years. Never really outstanding but never downright bad...except this last time. We went for dinner on Saturday 5/14. The hostess was great, directed us upstairs to the lounge/bar area. We wanted to sit outside since it was nice out. We went out onto the deck, the server/bar tended actually opened the door for us so he knew we went to sit. It was quite a while before he returned. We ordered drinks and waters. Had to ask 3x for waters. When he returned to take our dinner order, he made an odd comment about my martini separating. It is a menu drink, so likely something he has made or served before. Why are you surprised?? Anyways, he took our dinner order which included an app to come out first. We also requested some bread. Well, the app never showed up. Got bread with dinner, after asking again. Dinner was just ok. The only sides offered were mashed potatoes and wild rice, or double veg. The offered sides didn't really go with what we ordered in my opinion. Food was good, not excellent. There are plenty of other excellent restaurants in the area. We won't be returning to the C-Man. read more

After doing a bit more shopping we enjoyed dinner at The Common Man, one of my favorites as of late. The service was also fantastic (thank you Shyla!) Everything was so well executed from the hodge-podge of cloth covered couches in the lounge, to the gorgeous hand-carved bar where the proffered cheese and crackers sat. At the end of each meal, diners are offered delicious chocolate and one of the American classics to write a little something in (we got Tom Sawyer!) Out of respect for it's patrons The Common Man does not allow indoor photography and I actually liked that. read more

My last visit was quite a few years ago, but it's still just as good as I remember. We were visiting for my friend's birthday and they treated us (a loud group of 6) very well. From the bartender to the server, and even the function room person, the service was quick and pleasant. We ordered a large round of appetizers to start. The crab cakes were delicious! Their special of lobster sliders were ok. Too much bun and not enough lobster. There didn't seem to be much mayo and/or seasonings. I actually ate more of the slaw garnish which had a zesty Asian flair. The flatbread with onions, gorgonzola and mozzarella was my least favorite. As it happens most often, the gorgonzola overpowered the rest of the flavors. I had the steak oscar which was cooked perfectly. The bearnaise was tasty but it could've used a little more crabmeat on top. It came with your typical sides: broccoli, choice of potato, and butternut squash. The squash was the best; sweet and slightly spicy. I'm guessing that the rest of party enjoyed their entrees as most plates were clean! We will be back! read more

The staff was great but my guest and I were not impressed with our meals. We ordered Almost Escargot which was really just flavorless and the bread was stale. Apple Chicken was dry and underwhelming. The Sweet Corn Bacon Ravioli was so oily I had the urge to dab the sauce with a napkin like I'd do with a greasy pizza. The blackened chicken on top was actually delicious, but the sauce that everything sat in was so heavy & oily my stomach turned and we had to pack up. The best way I can describe this Common Man is Meh. Not bad, not great just meh. The decor is nice. But, the food is overly complicated and the presentation can be unnecessarily kitschy. I had the grilled chicken sandwich which was good but, the house chips were seasoned and that flavor ruined the grilled chicken. Another example would be when they presented the check in an old book. I'll start by telling you to prepare for not so great service, in the sense that they are slow, and possibly overworked, so they forget some things. The food however, is supreme! As you wait for your entree you can snack on some sops they have to offer, including cheese and crackers as well as some very delicious breads. I had a brown ale to wash down my snackage which was like a deeper and darker New Castle. Unfortunately, they don't have much to offer as far as pilsners, or ambers go. There is a variety of IPAs, however. The only great part about the lobster corn chowder was the delicious lobster meat, the rest was sort of boring, which I guess is expected when you have lobster next to corn... My filet mignon was cooked perfectly, and the meat was well prepared. One of the sides that comes with the meal was this butternut squash mash, and it was amazing! The texture wasn't pulpy and it wasn't too liquid either, just perfect. Very savory flavor, too. Overall, I had a very good dinner despite some of the long waits to see our server. read more

We waited close to an hour to be seated and when we were seated, there were easily 5 empty tables (the place seemed busier than it was as there was a group of 12 at one table, a group of 6 at another, a table of 3, a table of 2, and me and my boyfriend). We only noticed 2 servers and our service was incredibly slow. We got our drinks quickly, but to take our order, it took over 10 minutes. The bread was good but the meal was mediocre. I tried the pumpkin cod, simply because the menu didn't offer a lot of what I would eat. It was the special of the day so I was expecting to be wowed but I wasn't. The cod was cooked nicely but had zero flavor, not even salt or pepper... The pumpkin butter added a nice bit of flavor and I wasn't sure how I'd like it with the cod. The carrots were cooked al dente so had a nice bite to them but didn't have much flavor either (I could barely taste the maple). The rice pilaf tasted like Uncle's Ben's but drier. Overall, my meal just wasn't worth almost $20. My boyfriend got the steak which I think was cooked a little more than medium (he asked for medium). It was supposed to be char-grilled (the reason I didn't order steak because I don't like char-grilled) but looked like it was cooked on a griddle plus I couldn't taste any garlic. The mashed potatoes were alright but the gravy was weird. It also came with steamed broccoli but I didn't try any so not sure how well that tasted. We passed on desserts but were given complimentary white chocolate chunks as a finish to the meal. Those tasted good. Also, before the meal, we were allowed free access to cheese and crackers (that was unique). I don't think we will be visiting The Common Man again in the future. The food just wasn't worth the money and the service needs upgrading. Luckily, we had a gift card ;) I will say a nice added touch was that the lanterns at the tables were real fire and not just a flickering fake candle. It gave it more of a romantic flare. read more

First, it's good to be home in New Hampshire. Second, it was great to find a restaurant of the Common Man's caliber in Claremont. Located in a refurbished textile mill, the Common Man specializes in New England cooking. Waiters/waitresses are dressed in white shirts, black slacks and white aprons from waist to ground. Service is done by teams and other servers lend a hand for large parties. Needless to say, the service was topnotch. My friend and I enjoyed the Lobster and Corn Chowder, Prime Rib, Bison Burger w Cheddar Cheese. to drink, we ordered Iced Tea and Pina Coladas. The drinks are hefty sized. The Iced Tea and the Pina Colada came in the same size glass -- an 18 oz bar glass typically used for Guinness pints. The drinks were potent. No watered-down booze here. My companion was on her tuchas after the second Pina Colada! (LOL!!) I ordered the 24 oz Prime Rib and specified the End Cut. It arrived just as I wanted; medium rare with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Squash. The Lobster and Corn Chowder had six big chunks of lobster claw meat. Amazingly generous considering I ordered the CUP and not the bowl. My companion's Bison Burger with Cheddar Cheese was done to their taste -- on the grill until the smoke alarm goes off. Potato chips were free. French fries can be substituted for an extra dollar. The best part of the meal was the white chocolate served gratis at the end of the meal. The price is reasonable for the quality of food and the ambiance. Unless you want to drive up to Hanover or over to New London, you won't find better in Sullivan County. read more

Food is ok, Service is very slow. We came here at 12:30pm on a Sunday. We waited for 30 mins for a table, which is ok because that's the timeframe they told us. What I didn't expect was to wait 40 minutes from ordering till the time the first of our food arrived at our table. Not even the appetizers we ordered arrived before then. The wait was even longer to see our entrees which were burgers which is important to mention because I didn't order anything special that would've taken more time. The restaurant offers crackers and cheese while you wait. Neither the crackers or cheese were very good in my opinion but it seemed like other tables were content eating plates of crackers and cheese for 30-60 mins while they wait. For a place right off the highway, you have to be faster. I for one don't want to spend 3 hours at an establishment when you're trying to get to your destination. I gave 2 stars because the staff was nice but niceness doesn't make up for slow or poor expectation setting that they're perhaps backed up in the kitchen. read more

Went out of our way to go here for lunch on 11/19, after enjoying this place on a previous trip. Placed was busy. 2 couples ahead of us, one chatting in the corner. We asked if we could sit at the bar and the younger of the 2 "hostesses" said yes, it's first come first serve. This is when the older hostess stepped in and said no, they're waiting for a seat at the bar - indicating to the couple chatting in the corner. Mind you, she was on the phone when she interrupted her call to say that. A bar is a bar. First come, first serve and the first hostess told us to go ahead and go up. We sat at the bar and waited, which took a while but the bartender was a sweetheart. Then the older hostess comes up and motions to others to come to her and proceeds to whisper and POINT at us. Literally bad mouthing us to the other staff. This went on for nearly the hour we were there. The other couple seemed unphased by all this and eventually came upstairs and sat at an available pub table. Probably the most uncomfortable lunch I'd ever had. If this older woman is incapable of being pleasant, she shouldn't be at the front door, nor should she point & whisper about your customers. The others she was talking to did not engage with her, but yet she continued. Food good, bartender pleasant, but if you're turned off at the front door, you've lost my business for good. read more

Looks like a refurbished barn - cute little spot for brunch or a first date. *Amazing cheese dip! If it's just you and a casual date/friend, chill at the bar on the second floor (such a great country comfort feel to this place!) - dip, cheese, and crackers free. *Attentive wait staff: sometimes I get a little trouble from the hostesses, but the waiters are always fabulous and on the ball. *The brunch is so-so (the cost is reasonable *14$pp I think* and I like the waffles) - but be prepared to wait. The Cucumber Salad and Walnut Chicken are scrumptious. *Prices are a bit high for the area (around 15$+ for salad/entree). CONCLUSION: A good destination in Concord for a sit-down dinner (this place and Hermanos are my fave's). read more

Yum! Went up to NH for a ski trip with a few friends and came here for dinner, as it was within walking distance of our hotel (didn't have to cross any streets, just traversed a few parking lots). We checked in with the hostess who handed us a slip of paper and sent us upstairs. First thing I noticed when we walked in was that it was unusually warm, but after I settled in, I barely noticed it. They bring you bread and there's also a cheese and cracker bar (free) where you can help yourself to some munchies before your main course. The boys started with the Common Man Ale while the girls shared a bottle of wine. For our appetizers we ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp and baked escargot. Both were really good. The escargot came with little puff pastry squares and bread cubes to soak up the buttery sauce - heart attackingly good. For entrees, the boys each ordered the prime rib and the girls ordered the Uncommon Steak Oscar and the Portsmouth Sautee. Everything was really good. I loved the horseradish sauce that came on the prime rib. The cut of meat used in the Uncommon Steak Oscar wasn't anything special, but I liked the crab topping and the bernaise sauce. The meat dishes came with a choice of sides (baked potato, mashed potato, or rice) - everyone opted for the mashed potato. The dishes actually came with both regular mashed as well as a sweet potato mash. The Portsmouth Sautee was my favorite. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was really flavorful. The scallops and shrimp were cooked perfectly and they were really generous with the seafood. The portions in general were really generous. With the leftovers between the four of us, we filled up two huge to-go boxes (and enjoyed them for breakfast the next day). The ambiance was nice - like you're in someone's cozy, quaint house. The service was great and our waitress was really nice. My only qualm was that the restaurant closed around 10 (cleared out pretty quickly) so I felt a bit rushed towards the end. Oh! And this was a bit weird, but at the end of our meal, the waitress came and laid a napkin down on the table and then grabbed some white chocolate chunks out of her apron pocket and poured some onto the napkin. The pot roast here is really very decent. Tender, well flavored meat, sort of marred by being served with overly squishy squash. There's free cheese and crackers to serve yourself, and big chunks of white chocolate with the check, which keeps me smiling.
