The only downside about this place is that it's cash only, so make sure you have cash before you go. As far as their coffee, I was absolutely blown away and am so sad I live two states over. It's in adorable spot downtown and walkable from the college. They stay open late on Sundays which is rare and was a major perk in my book! The service was nice. They were super friendly and helpful. Klekolo is cash only!! There is an ATM inside if you need to withdraw some; it's tucked away near the bathroom. The drinks are pretty good. I didn't get one myself, but I tried my friends' and I liked them. I'm not a huge coffee person, but there was this one drink that had strawberry and banana flavoring in it and it tasted way more like banana than coffee, so I liked that. I got a brownie with mint cream and it was good -- not super sweet and had a good texture and flavor. The cream itself was thick like buttercream. There is free wi-fi here, but it is spotty and did cut out when I was using my laptop. There are also at least 4 tables inside, so this place is alright for studying. read more

This place is a CASH only establishment. There is an ATM inside if in case you forget though. I only had their Belgian Hot Chocolate and I am very pleased that they made it just the way I expected. The staff was very welcoming and kind. We ended up staying to chat for 2.5 hours There are a few bakery items which pairs well with coffee. They played music and is as quiet as their customers make it. There's also street parking available on both sides and the meter runs from 10am-6pm that takes coins and card. I've been here a few times now and have been happy with my coffee. Recently, I ordered the Cloud 9 iced latte with oat milk. It had the perfect combination of chocolate and coconut flavors, and wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. My Fiancé had the Witches Brew hot coffee and thought the flavors of caramel, chocolate, and hazelnut was perfectly balanced. Also, it would have helped if they had been labeled - it was annoying to try to guess what they could be, and i didn't want to ask about every single one. So I ended up not ordering any at all. My partner and I made a weekend trip up to Middletown to look at apartments - he's moving for a new job and we wanted to check out the area. Middletown is much quieter than what we're used to (NYC), but I am a big fan of the suburbs. I was expecting a small town feel, and was rewarded with just that. It was one of those quiet beginning of summer weekend's when the university is out of session and the college town returns back to tranquility for a bit before the rowdy co-eds with their macbooks and sweatshirts ramble back in. Outside were three older women outside enjoying the sun and laughing at some fond memory. Inside it was quiet with the Rastafarian baristas taking it easy. It definitely smelled a bit musty inside, but I liked that natural trait to it. The tea selection was vigorous - from a company called "Republic of Tea". The prices were also not variable - just $2.50 per teabag, $4 for a two teabag bundle. The inside was adorned with photographs/pieces of art against purple walls. Cartographer aficionados will find joy with the bathroom walls - adorned with random maps from all over, my favourite being a winery/brewery tour. Overall, I liked the place and am excited that my partner and I will be spending slow weekends here trying out the many teas. read more

Here's a brief review. I watched my cortado being made. I knew it would suck. Why? The shot was pulled for about a minute solid. The milk was foamed like milk you'd foam if you hated cappuccino and wanted to make a bad one. (And had never heard of a cortado.) The whole thing was poured into a giant paper cup. It tasted like burnt dirt. I took one sip and dropped it in the garbage can. I did leave the guy a dollar tip though because it's not his fault he's not trained. read more

Klekolo is such a unique coffee shop. The decor inside is very artsy-hippie-ish so it's right up my alley. They have local artwork & crafts displayed for sale & funky furniture for seating. The menu has a lot of different flavored coffee options, which isn't really my thing, but all the options sound delicious if you like your coffee sweet & flavored. I'm more of purist when it comes to coffee/tea, so I picked a yummy peach green tea from their tea wall, which is packed with tons of different types of tea canisters to choose from. I was so happy to find out their hours are different than most coffee shops in the area. They're open till 10PM weekdays & midnight on Fridays & Saturdays! We came upon this shop a bit by accident but it was a happy accident. Note - it is cash only but they quite cleverly have their own ATM. The space is kind of funky and the big draw for us was the wide selection of tea. Brilliantly, tea is charged by the bag and not by the size of the cup (the way tea should be charged in my opinion). The man working behind the counter was helpful in suggesting tea that would fit our tastes. It seems like there was also a wide selection of coffee and other beverages for a variety of pallets. A solid staple of Middletown that has been there for years serving great coffee and lattes. Their creatively concocted lattes are always such a great treat. The shop is small, but cozy for studying or meeting friends a little off the main path. There are a 5 or 6 small tables inside and a few outside as well. They always feature artwork by local artists and the last time I was in there they had work by one of my favorites, Leonardo LaGonza Gonzalez, for prime sipping and staring. For the studious night owls or those hard workers needing a pre-party pick me up, they are open late! A huge plus to be able to get your delicious caffeination even after dark. read more

Came here over the weekend with my fiancé, his brother and and an awesome gal pal. After some brewery hopping and fancy pizza hangs the men wanted some caffeine - understandably since they'd be driving later to get home. The ambience here is pretty awesome and kind of screams 90s artsy teen angst MTV sitcom. I mean this in the most positive of ways though...dark purple walls, lots of cool artwork, a section by the entrance that sells locally made jewelry made out of repurposes stainless steel spoons and forks, a wall where people in this community advertise their indie band shows, art exhibits, odd job services, political rants etc and a coffee list that would please both a coffee no0b and a seasoned coffee sommelier. There was apparently also a "pony" flavored coffee...I didn't ask about it because I still have a huge soft spot in my heart for My Little Ponies and felt I wouldn't be satisfied with any answer, lol. The seating here is full of small round tables, some regular wooden chairs and some deliciously fluffy large living room type chairs that wouldn't be out of place at all by a fancy pants cabin fireplace. If I lived in these parts I could see myself coming to hang out here for hours with fantastic coffee and great people watching material. Oh, and while I only had about half of my finance's coffee and tried his brother's slightly stronger brew - both were bangin'. Really great coffee in a really cool setting. read more

I can actually say, without exaggeration, that this is the best coffee I've ever tasted. I've been twice and tried a few different drinks. First I had a cappuccino that smelled so go that i wanted to swim in it. The milk was perfect frothed and clung to the side of my cup for dear life before I had to stick my fingers in to get what was left. I also tried my girlfriends caramel caffe latte which was great. Perfect sweetness, excellent milk, and real tasty espresso. I'd also recommend the iced latte. They use espresso ice cubes so the drink isn't watered down as it melts. Ingenious! read more

We have passed this business several times when in the area and finally made the stop a couple days ago. I loved the feeling when you walk inside. Definitely feels like that old-school coffee shop in a city. Both my college daughter and I ordered our go-to lattes that we always enjoy from a coffee shop. When I went to pay, the gentleman told me they were cash only, which was fine as I had money on me, but I honestly didn't see any signage before I walked in that indicated that. I was fortunate to have enough cash or I would have been embarrassed! We took our coffees to go, hopped in our car, and went on our way. First sip into both our drinks, we looked at each other with grossed out faces. I asked her if hers was watery and she said yes. You couldn't taste the espresso in either drink. Just tasted like flavored milk. We were so disappointed. We are big supporters of small business, but in this case, the coffee was just awful. We sadly ended up in a Dunkin drive through on the way home to get some lattes with a whole bunch of espresso in them, and sadly, they exceeded this small coffee shop. read more

Summary: 1) it's all about the coffee, and 2) the alternative-shabby atmosphere is by design. 3) If you're into it (I am) then it's awesome. If not, you won't 'get it'. Klekolo is a Seattle, Portland, San Francisco "Alternative" (Read: "21st century Hippy") themed and managed coffee shop, in one of New England's oldest, most provincial cities, across from one of New England's brownstone churches, and down the street from Wesleyan University's brownstone monumental buildings. Wesleyan was founded as a military college, but abandoned when the state grew hostile to it, and the religious folk, as was common in Puritanical New England, took over. Yale, Trinity, and Wesleyan remain puritanical and ideological institutions and they are the only institutions of merit in the the state other than UConn. (Which explains CT's political and economic condition. Boston has MIT to compensate, and SF has Stanford, and CT has neither. Hence, the state's 'IQ flight'.) Now, Wesleyan is a needs-blind institution that retains some of that Puritanism (although in Marxist and Postmodern robes rather than Christian) so it attracts a certain class of students - on the nerdy alternative side - and this coffee shop is part of that culture. So as someone with an education in the fine arts, from Middletown, who has spent most of his adult life in Seattle, Klekolo is like every coffee shop in Portland and the north end of Seattle (if not the east side), and a model that has been copied around the world. And if that's your thing, you'll give this a five star rating. If it isn't, then you're rating your dislike of that alternative culture, and the hang loose service that goes with it. Any product, service, or information should be rated by it's fulfillment of its promise, and Klekolo fulfills its promise perfectly. For an "Ecotopia" themed Artisan coffee shop in a small town, this is how it is done. So that's the reason for my 5 star rating. (And I am not a gentle reviewer.) read more
