The Davenport has been on my list for a while. I've visited the Clear Lake location, but not this location in Upper Kirby. I stopped by on a Sunday around 6 p.m. While I Uber'd, I know that you can find free street parking in the area despite it often being busy. Ambiance (3.5/5): The Davenport was packed even on a Sunday evening. To the point where no seats were available. Luckily for me, about 10 minutes in, the lady next to me left so I was able to snag a seat at the bar. There are also high tops and a small patio out front. The Davenport is a pretty chill establishment, but one with a loyal following. Service (4/5): A full bar usually means service issues. There was a component of that here. It took a little while to order my drink and later to get the bartender's attention to close my tab. Given how popular The Davenport is, your experience will likely be the same. Luckily, they make up for it by going above and beyond with their cocktails. I'll get to that in a second. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet, and to be honest, while I'm not 100%, I don't think they have food. There was a guy walking around selling boudin though right when I was about to leave. Drinks (4.5/5): The Davenport is known for their martinis so that's what I recommend going with. It's a The Cheesecake Factory-type menu with 40 or so martinis to choose from. Paradox of choice situation. I ended up going with the gummy bear which was a solid cocktail, although a bit too sweet for my taste. Here's what makes Davenport next level... their martinis pack a punch. I always appreciate a stiff drink. And on top of that, they often give you more than your cocktail in a martini glass. There's usually quite a bit leftover so they'll pour that in another glass for you. Basically a drink and a half for the price of one! Given the strength of the cocktails and the quantity, it's definitely a good deal. The Davenport has been around for a while and has become a well-known spot. I'm glad I finally got to cross it off the list. After you down a martini or two, there's an Irish pub right next door and Trill Burger right across the street. read more

Came right after they opened on a Sunday afternoon and the bartender was very welcoming.. It was my first time here, and the menu is pretty extensive. We came specifically for the chocolate martinis and I tried out an expresso one as well.. It was dangerously good. The bartender warned us ahead of time as they pour double here and yea.. he wasn't kidding. It was filled all the way to the brim.. you're getting your money's worth on a delicious martini. Vibe was a good entire time as they started playing some R&B/hiphop... the crowd slowly trickled in. By the time we left it was almost packed! We had a really nice little table near the front so got to see alot of regulars come in. The bartender even gave us a round of shots on the house for being our first time. This place is such a vibe! It's divey with an older crowd. Based on the clientele, one would assume that this is a Black owned business but it's not. The staff is so chill and laid back. They have good music playing, and it's not so loud that you can't have a conversation. Everyone already knows how strong the drinks are. I thought the drinks at the Clear Lake location were strong (and they are), but honey, one martini will knock you on your ass if you aren't careful. Consider this your warning. The martini menu is extensive. I had a Pitbull in the Skyy (vodka, grapefruit, lemon) and it was good. Against my better judgement, I decided to order an Aviation martini. I enjoy a good Aviation, but nothing could have prepared me for the potency of The Davenport's Aviation. The bartender (who I later found out is also the owner) said he didn't have the maraschino cherry for the garnish. I'm not a fan of cherries, so it wasn't a big deal. The drink was good, but the amount of booze in it was ridiculous. I needed help finishing it because I wasn't going to let a good drink go to waste. Needless to say, I apologized to my liver when I made it home. I've known about The Davenport for years, but I somehow missed the memo about the concert tickets. If you're looking for a lowkey chill bar this is it! You can post up outside or find a nice secluded intimate table inside. If you're in the mood to be social they have a decent anoint of bar seats. Very disappointing experience. My two friends and I sat at the bar, and within five minutes a security guard asked one of my friends to leave, saying she appeared intoxicated. This was surprising, as it was our first stop of the evening after dinner while celebrating my birthday. The situation was handled abruptly, without any attempt at a respectful conversation or clarification, which left us feeling unwelcome. I tried to calmly understand and resolve the concern, but there was no willingness to engage. We also noticed inconsistent enforcement. On this visit, and a previous one, a visibly intoxicated and disruptive male patron was not asked to leave. I hope management reviews how situations like this are handled and applies policies consistently and respectfully to all guests. read more

I've heard so much about The Davenport, mainly about how strong the drinks are, and I can confirm the bartenders do not hold back. The pours are heavy, the cocktails are solid, and most are around $11, which is rare these days. The vibe reminded me of an old-school college kickback but more grown. No rowdy music, just a good mix where you can actually hear your friends talk. Even with the crowd, it still felt comfortable and we were able to find tabletop seating pretty quickly. The bartenders were super attentive and moved fast to help everyone at the bar. You just have to be patient and wait your turn. My only real complaint is the bathroom setup. Only two stalls for a bar that popular doesn't really make sense. They definitely need more space to keep up with the crowd. Other than that, I loved the energy. The lighting was moody and red-toned, and people were genuinely friendly. Someone even offered me their seat when they saw me standing, which was such a sweet gesture. Sooo... if you want a great cocktail on a budget, this is the place. Just a heads up--these pours are not for the weak. I'm a lightweight, so I usually stick to one drink. Anything past that and you might as well carry me out . The spot is small and cozy, so get there early if you want a seat. There's some outdoor seating too, and they've got music going inside and out. The crowd is mostly chill, older folks with a sprinkle of younger people mixed in. They can make pretty much anything you ask for, or you can choose from their menu. I've been coming here for over 10 years and the consistency and quality of the drinks have never changed. Davenport has been a staple for over 20 years, always a well-made drink with heavy pours! Usually, you're good with 2! The vibe is always nice, and grown. It's not the place if you're looking for a club experience, more of a dimly lit, cool music and cool people type of experience. My only complaint is there is a bartender (tall, bald, thinner white guy) that has been there for the last year who has the absolute WORST attitude for a bartender! Multiple times, I've watched him lose his patience and start yelling at customers, he won't acknowledge you if you're standing right in front of him and he will just walk away to go outside to smoke....and I highly doubt he washes his hands when he returns. It's almost as if he hates his job and/or the minorities that have been patronizing Davenport for YEARS. This is an old Houston staple. Every night they have great music and the stiffest, tastiest Martinis in the city. Every time we come to Houston we make sure we stop through. Davenport is a bar that was recommended by my friends for a while now. Finally, we had the opportunity to go as we were looking for a place to drink after we finished eating at Trill Burger. Upon arrival, there was no line at the door, which according to my friend, is considered tame. There were a lot of people inside though and it was pretty loud. Understandable, since it's a bar or a lounge so I was expecting the noise and the crowd. The ambiance and decor are great and the place carries higher end whiskies which I appreciate. However, that's where the good stuff ends. I ordered an old fashioned off their menu and was charged $14 for their well whiskey. My buddies ordered other cocktails on their extensive menu and they also complained that it was weaker than the norm. Maybe it's an off day for them? The part that surprised me the most is the 3% credit card surcharge. I have never been to an establishment before where they charge you 3% just for opening a tab with a credit card. There is no signage stating that they charge 3% posted anywhere in the establishment. Anvil. Roswells. Poison Girl. Little Dipper. Captain Foxhearts. Notsuoh. Catbirds. Boondocks. Julep. You get the idea. NONE of them charge a 3% credit card surcharge. Is this some new law in Texas that I'm not aware about that got passed in 2024? So I finally made my way to The Davenport and I ended up loving it so much that I returned three times this month, lol. When they said the drinks were strong, they were not playing! Honey, I had a drink so strong I figured they could have just given me the entire bottle because WOW! I drink whiskey so it was definitely not a tolerance thing. I ordered a whiskey sour and it was all whiskey- no sour. Not complaining, just explaining. Now the place is dimly lit and packed. There is not much room to move around. If you want to dance, this is not the place for that. The Dave (yes, I gave the place a nickname!) is a social gathering type vibe. This is where social hour takes place. I don't know how well one can socialize though because you can barely hear. Haha Overall, the place is chill. The restroom did need some attention. The bartenders are really cool and nice. I have been here for the last two weeks on Fridays to meet with a few friends. It located in the Upper Kirby area. They indulge in heavy pours and you will feel it after a drink or two. Its a not a very large place and they sometimes setup large tents out front in the parking area to accommodate the overflow. People start to arrive as early as 2 pm for their Happy Hour. First off this is my first and last time here. Thought this place has great reviews about the cocktails and martinis here my experience does not match up. To have a bar staff member use DEROGATIVE words is not only an insult to me but to a huge community of people of color. Considering that most POC (people of color) keeps this bar afloat I would think twice about going back to this place. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. -10/10 Primera y última vez que voy a este lugar. You will never find a better watering hole than this place. It's the gumbo of Houston night life. You're in the mix with Drs, Lawyers, and the street hustlers all coming together for one thing, those STRONG ASS DRINKS The ambiance is always nice and chill. My bartender Dan is always the best. I went recently and they have partitions up at the bar separating each two seats. They've put more sitting areas outside. With covid, it's nice to see they are take precautions. This used to be my little secret. I've been going for many years but since the word is out, I thought I'd give them the rave review they deserve. Tips: come early, there's limited parking in front. Park with caution in any other place because your car will be towed. Most times the officers will come in to try to find the owner before towing. Drinks are STRONG, so even if you don't taste anything, believe me it's in there!! So be careful. I've seen to many nonbelievers have to be carried out by their friends. Guys and girls alike.
