Portland's original and unique on-the-river dining experience. Sure, you could go to Salty's or something, but it's not the quirky, laid-back afternoon/evening you can have on The Deck, which is actually *on* the water. This is actually the first time I was at The Deck *not* with a work group (which they are also good for), so we got to try some of the better menu items. This is, of course, a place for seafood, so we got the bay shrimp cocktail (so many shrimp!) and I had the Halibut Heatwave sandwich. Both were good, as were the fries. My sweetie got the BBLT (BLT with extra bacon) which was ... two meals, really. Overall, The Deck really has the best food I've had floating from a restaurant. It's really amazing what they can produce on a houseboat, especially since they have to wheel their supplies down the same ramp you entered on. Our server was fun and really embraced the summer dining on the water spirit, with a Hawaiian shirt and matching pants, and lots of happy silly chit-chat. Pretty much all the staff were cheerful and friendly, which is my regular experience and kinda amazing when you think about how this place is only open 5 months a year. This is really what you're here for, and the ambiance of having a pint while watching the sailboats go under the 5 bridge. The food is probably 3.5 stars, but they get a 5 for service and ambiance. Some tips: Go to The Deck on a weekday, it's far less crowded. Sit on the patio if there's room and you can do it without staring into the sun (bring a hat, just in case). Parking is in the McCuddy Marina parking lot, to the *left* (right is for marina members only). Some of the "standard pub" items are lackluster (like the Caesar salad); stick to their seafood and tacos, which are much better. Also, the vegetarian/vegan options are pretty boring, unless you just want fries, which are great. Warning, though: if you are mobility-impaired, The Deck is probably not for you; the McCuddy Marina involves steep ramps and a long walk on very cluttered piers. read more

We were seated almost immediately. We had a dog so hostess found us a seat right on the river's edge. While we were looking at the menu waiting for the server, the hostess brought a dog bowl with water for our dog. I got the 3 piece halibut fish & chips, she got the halibut fish tacos. Both entrees were on happy hour prices. Happy Hour is 11:00am to 5:00pm every weekday. Which is great for a weekday lunch. Fish Tacos were great, my fish was good with nice breading but a little soft and mushy inside. Good flavor though. The Cole slaw was great it was sweeter than most almost tasted like it had a little honey in it. Fries were crispy. It was a beautiful day by the water, with geese swimming and boats going by. I've frequented The Deck for the last three years and was disappointed with my last two visits. Last year when we visited the fish seemed overcooked and the crust was soggy. This year they changed their menu a bit and the quality of the food has gone down. All the fried foods were over cooked. My spouse had fish and chips and the outside was dark and the grease tasted old. My wrap was not bad but definitely not worth $20 for turkey lunch meat, lettuce, cucumber, and tomato. I'm not one to complain about prices as I know it's expensive for restaurants these days. I'm happy to pay for good quality food but this wrap was so basic, cost maybe $5 to make. Thankfully our server Ziggy was friendly. He did a good job at getting to us quickly and refilling drinks. However, not sure we will return. Dinner with 7 people inside at The Deck was very disappointing. Service was terrible. We waited 15 min for him to take our order. Then the food took another 20+minutes to arrive. We needed water glasses to be refilled but no one did. The roll of paper towels doubling as napkins was empty but we had to make a point of asking for more. The food was disappointing as well. One of my fan favorite summer spots. The Deck is exactly the kind of basic, fun place you want on a warm Portland day. It's right off Marine Drive and literally floats on the water a relaxed atmosphere , good drinks, casual food, and lots of friendly faces. It gets packed, especially on sunny weekends, but that's part of the energy. The drinks are strong, the seafood is decent (nothing gourmet, but hits the spot), and the view is unbeatable. You'll probably see a few smelly ducks drifting by only adds to the character. Now there is a bit of a downside.The ramp down is steep and a bit of a hike, especially on the way back up. Had a great lunch here with a friend on a 75 degree sunny day - perfect! The location is perfect, sitting at a picnic table, enjoying the view of the Columbia River inches away, and sunshine - it makes me smile just being there, Food is great, too! Remember, this is a casual cafe. But for a casual place, the turkey reuben was phenomenal! Toasted marbled rye bread, lots of turkey, sauerkraut and Russian dressing all came together into a flavor bomb, so satisfying. Saved half and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. The fries were super crisp. Excellent. Waitress was friendly and efficient. Even though it was lunch, I ordered a cocktail because it was that kind of a day. A refreshing spicy margarita on the rocks, no sal, did the trick. My only complaint, and there is no way to change it, is the ramp walking down is so steep, more so when the river is low. So for people with mobility issues, it's challenging. I made it down and back up no problem, but would hesitate to go there mid summer when the water is a lot lower. Arrived on May 5 at 11:30. Faintly full, but several empty tables. Menu states breakfast/brunch menu served until 12pm. Placed order off breakfast menu at 11:47, but was told, "Sorry, the kitchen already transitioned to the lunch menu. STRIKE ONE. At 12:22still waiting for food. We're told that the kitchen is "a bit behind." We're offered a bowl of chowder. We were under the impression this was complementary because of the delay. Nope, we later find we were charged. At 12:30, three two-tops that arrived after us were served starters. STRIKE TWO. At 11:44, our food arrived. Shrimp salad - lots of shrimp, but we have no silverware. I go to find a fork from kitchen. Halibut tacos.-- grilled, but bland and little to no seasoning. Teriyaki salmon tacos -- s are lemon is chopped to consistency of cat food and swimming in very wet teriyaki sauce, AND topped with MUCH mayo sauce. Can't even taste the salmon. Hands fun, the worst tacos I've had after 26 years in Oregon. STRIKE THREE. Also, they allow dogs on the deck. Tables are close on the water, so we were front toe for two large ones barking at each other throughout our meal. STRIKE FOUR. I'm giving one star because the server was pleasant. I absolutely love this place. My husband and I have to come at least once every summer. We come for the food and the views. I definitely recommend it. The waiters/waitresses are always super friendly. The food is delicious, which I definitely recommend their calamari and fish tacos. The red velvet cake was not my favorite. It almost tasted like froze and thawed out but other than that everything else was amazing. Oh and let's not forget that it's Dog friendly! Flying into PDX at 9:40 AM, I was craving some good seafood. My girlfriend picked me up, and since we were heading south, we didn't want to stray too far from the airport or I-205. Not many places were open between 10-10:30 AM on a Sunday, but this spot popped up--and we're so glad it did! We loved that it was right on the water, offered seafood options and mimosas. Most restaurants downtown didn't open until 11 or even noon, and we didn't want to wait that long. Our waiter was fantastic--super cheerful, funny, and rocking a great matching outfit. I wish I remembered his name! He was attentive, and our food came out fast. We shared the 4-piece halibut and fries along with the shrimp salad. It was tasty, affordable, and perfect for our appetite. We've been to Salty's nearby for their all-you-can-eat buffet a few times, but their price jump from $69.99 to $90 made it hard to justify--especially since we weren't that hungry. Been coming here for years and it's a great time to relax on the water with some good company, food and drinks. It is kind of a hike down onto the dock, and the back up could be a little tough as it's steep. Kind of cool to see all the boats and wish you had one. Their food is pretty good; drinks are great- they even make mocktails. There are two different kind of seatings- one is 'inside' (which is still outside) for larger groups. And the other is outside and it's family seating so you may be sitting with others, but everyone is respectful. The airport is nearby and you see the planes overhead. You can also bring your dogs which was nice to see. The parking is just off marine drive and if you go too fast you will pass the entrance. read more

Had a great lunch here. All the seating is outside on "the deck". It was a beautiful day right on the water surrounded by sailing yachts. Great atmosphere. Lotta birds come in and land on the tables and the floors around you, but there are signs that say please don't feed they get aggressive. Lol. The food we had was absolutely delicious every bit of it. I had fish and chips that included some of the best tasty fish I've had and quite some time. It was flaky and actually tasted like fish. It came with coleslaw that was also very good. My wife had the shrimp tacos and loved them as well. For appetizer, we had steak bites that were so tender. I was happily surprised when I ate my first one. I was expecting the tough little meat nuggets that I usually get, but these were very tender. Very tasty. Now the bad news. This place is NOT ADA friendly! Navigating out on the deck is navigable. Getting there is not easy. You have to go over many ramps and obstacles to get there. Restrooms are not easy to get to. The worst thing is the ramp was too long and steep that my power chair could not handle the incline and I was stranded. Thankfully two people were able to push me along with my wife to the top. When I read 'Seasonal floating restaurant' I am probably in... And am glad I was! I went to dinner with friends and we all loved the water, the birds, the sunset and the Thursday night sailboat regatta happening on the river. The place has a great, breezy feel, friendly staff, tasty beach shack food and well-crafted beverages. We had stretchy fried cheese curds, creamy chowder, excellent steamed clams, prawns and chips and a crisp, garlicky Caesar along side some original margaritas. I paid $16 for a small bowl of warm, bland, soupy clam chowder. Let me repeat: $16 - S i x t e e n D o l l a r s - for the most forgettable bowl of clam chowder I have had in ages. Who charges $16 for a small bowl of soup? Adding insult to injury, everyone at the table including myself thought that my chowder would come in a bread bowl, as the menu read "CHOWDER BOWL." Nope. Just a regular little bowl of tepid cream soup with some clams piled at the bottom. The crackers were the tastiest part. Oof. How embarrassing. It never occurred to me to read the fine print, as this is literally the only place I have ever been in my entire life that calls a regular bowl of chowder a "Chowder Bowl." By far the most expensive chowder I have ever eaten; even more than the bowl I had at an uppity restaurant in New York last year ($12 - very hearty, clams evenly suspended throughout, spiced perfectly, and delicious). Also, the tall, bear-like Mr. Matchy-Match server with his wacky onesie uniform was just obnoxiously loud. Tell that dude to simmer down for crying out loud. He is WAY too nice-guy loud. It was super distracting to have to listen to this guy barking at other tables throughout our meal, "DID EVERYONE GET WHAT THEY WANT? WHO NEEDS MORE DRINKS? EVERYBODY HAPPY HERE? WHO HAD THE BURGER?" Haven't been to this little gem in years, and glad we tired it again. First off, yes it's technically ADA accessible, but when the water is low, I'd not try if in a wheelchair and not steady and brakes are not on point or have serious mobility issues, as ramp can be steep. We are not, but always looking out for my ADA friends out there! The staff and food here is great. Our server Ziggy was crazy funny and makes it seem like you're his only table. And, we were not a big ticket tonight. Cheers man, and awesome! Onion petals ($10), were crispy, onion was sweet and chipotle sauce was fire. Steak bites ($15) were juicy, perfect cook (medium-medium rare) and seasoned to perfection. Steamers ($22) had lots of chips (broken shells) in them, but, let's not worry about that (just mentioning if anyone reads, to BOLO that), they were delicious and I even asked for the broth to-go, as I have no shame. OK, we come here at least twice a year and always get the halibut fish and chips. Let me start by saying, the waitress was fabulous and very accommodating. The halibut and onion petals "So Overcooked" the halibut was like chewing on leather. The grease matched on the onion petals which we had never had before. We are elderly, and my husband has liver disease and this has not set right in either of our stomachs since we got home an hour ago. We come a long ways from Redland to eat at your establishment. We explained the situation to the waitress and she said the cook overcooked it in her opinion and gave us new pieces of fish but by the time we got it, we were full from trying to chew the hard leather halibut. The clam chowder was excellent as always! I would've much rather appreciated half of a refund at from a lunch of 4 piece Halibut fish & chips, onion petals instead of fries and 2 cups of clam cyand just water to drink but that was not offered to us. Maybe we were being too polite and should have asked. What we both do have is stomach aches from greasy fish and onion petals and out $55 plus tip . Just wanted to point this out to you. If this is how they are on the last day of the season I can't wait to check them out when they're in full swing. Super friendly and attentive server. Was really clear on what the situation was since it was end of season. They had great deals and were trying to sell out, makes sense. The menu was clearly marked so you knew exactly what they were already out of, which I appreciated. Unfortunately the things that would tempt me were out of stock, but what I did see looked great. The food smelled so good and everyone around seemed very happy. They have lots of seating and you can have a view. The dock ramp here is very steep and they aren't lying when they say heels are not recommended. So someone with mobility issues probably wouldn't be able to navigate that part so well. The Deck is a bit like the Island Cafe's kissing cousin, situated a little further upriver along the Columbia in McCuddy's Marina off Marine Drive, and a little more obscure: it's very easy to overlook. Hell, I did for years, until this last weekend! It has its own set of advantages: closer to home (for us), less crowded. It's a little less photogenic, and a little rougher around the edges in some places, but still a wonderful spot to enjoy some casual lunch fare and cocktails on a warm, sunny afternoon! We ordered the Deck Burger for myself: a sort of French Dip/burger hybrid, complete with au jus; the Chapman Bleu for my wife: a cod fish sandwich boasting bleu cheese dressing and crumbles instead of tartar sauce; a Tokyo Tea for myself, and a Peaches and Tea for the lady. Both of us subbed out our included French Fries for one of the pasta salads on the appetizer menu: the Pesto Tortellini and the Sundried Tomato Penne, respectfully (the latter, without a doubt, is the *exact* same pasta you can buy from Gartner's deli on Killingsworth, FYI, and absolutely worth your money!). The Deck Burger seemed a little plain: could have used more caramelized onions and maybe some other accoutrement, IMO, but it was still pretty tasty, properly cooked, and the au jus a well-executed staple. My wife's Chapman Bleu, on the other hand, left me envious: she was utterly in love with it, savoring each and every bite: the bleu cheese complementing the deep-fried cod filet surprisingly well! Both of us would be hard-pressed to order anything else on the menu, upon a return visit. Cocktails were light and refreshing, and sizeable for the price. The Tokyo Tea, being basically a Long Island Iced Tea with Midori (I think?) was light and refreshing, and the Peaches and Tea was exactly as advertised: peach iced tea with a punch. Service was friendly and reasonably competent, even if most of the servers working seemed to be slightly-green high school aged kids working a summer job: no complaints about attentiveness or accuracy. The river views here are almost incomparable for any restaurant on the Columbia within city limits on either side, and a gentle wake from passing ships keeps things lively, at least for those resilient to sea-sickness (it's really not bad at all!). As I grow older, I've begun to realize that I am particularly partial to ships, docks, harbors, marinas...anything nautical by nature, as well as any restaurants that occupy said spaces or embrace said themes (Dad-mode fully engaged, I guess?!). Maybe I was a sailor in a previous life; certainly not this one, which is something I regret. Even so, despite my lack of sea-faring experience, on any sunny summer afternoon or evening, there's a decent chance you find me standing (well, sitting) on The Deck. read more

The environment was really relaxed. I didn't know this place existed. It's tucked away on the marina just past salties. Once you park there is a little walk to the restaurant. It's like your going to get on one of the boats. The walk down is steep so be careful. Once we arrive we were asked if we wanted to sit outside on the floating deck or inside. We chose outside. At the time there was only uncovered seating available which meant lots of sunshine. We took it. Later another table opened up with an umbrella so we took. Perfect it's hot today so shade was important. While waiting to order you can enjoy the view. You are literally on the water. Duck floating by hoping a bread crumb or two will drop. There is signage that say no feeding the wildlife. They may become aggressive. Noted!!! Also we had several plains fly overhead including four fighter Jets that were incredibly loud. For me it made the environment considering it's up the road from the Portland International Airport. We orders fish and chips and clam chowder. The fish was perfectly battered and flaky. Not greasy at all. They were perfect and super delicious. It was served with fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was ok I've had better and the fries were fries. Very good dish. The chowder was very tasty and very smoky tasting. For me it was like they had cooked it with some smoked brisket. Perhaps the bacon they used in the chowder had a smoke on it. I had heard good things about this place and wanted to give it a try since the summer season is officially ending. This was my first and probably my last time ever going there. The food was horrendous and the chef/cook as well as the owner should be embarrassed to be serving that to their customers. We ordered a $16 bowl of chowder that was soupy, barely hot and so salty that it was absolutely inedible. We brought it to the server's attention and asked if we could substitute it with the Caesar salad instead. He informed us that he would check and not even one minute later, he comes back to our table (not as friendly now at this point) and brings us this overdressed salad with limp and brown lettuce. There was no way they could've made a fresh salad in that amount of time. He came back and asked how the salad was and we told him it wasn't any better but to just leave it and he just walked away. At no point, did he apologize for the food not tasting off or offer to make it right. The calamari was over fried and so dry and tough, like it had been fried over and over. The coconut shrimp was clearly frozen and they just fried it quickly. Drinks were good though. They were out of a lot of food on their menu but given that today was their last day of the season, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Ambiance was nice, with a great view but a little loud because of all the planes flying. Service was great in the beginning but changed 360° after we sent the clam chowder back. Servers need some more training on how they speak to customers and how to handle situations such as this properly. I overheard the sever behind us asking members of the large party she was serving "Do you want anything?"and "What do you want?". The proper wording should've been "what can I get for you?". Hopefully when they reopen next season, the food and service will have improved. read more

Came here for the views and sea food We got fish and chips and halibut fish tacos. The fish tacos didn't taste fresh and didn't have a good crunch to them. Also the sauce was lacking so they didn't have much flavor either. The fish and chips were definitely better and they came with good tartar sauce. There's plenty of parking but you have to walk a lot to get to the restaurant. The view is nice, you are literally on a deck on top of the water and there wasn't a lot of people at all & we went on a weekend, the service was slow but the waitress we got was very friendly.
