The difference between 3 and 4 stars on this place: Beer Selection, there isn't any. They have 4 lagers on tap, one hefeweizen, and Stanley Park Amber Ale. Nothing with any flavor. You know, with the success of bars like Biercraft (Stella's) and St. Augustine's on the Drive, and the fact that almost every other bar on the drive carries at least one IPA (and I don't mean that sweet watery Russell IPA, I mean something with guts), you'd think that a place like The Dime that is aiming to cater to a younger crowd would at least have one beer on tap with some flavor, but this bar remains behind the times. I was told by the extremely friendly and helpful bartenders, Josh, Jason, and Cory, that the bar is still owned by the same family as its predecessor, La Rocca, but that it is now being run by the son. It was remodelled as The Dime Road House to cater to a younger crowd and to bring the income stream back up. In this regard it seems highly successful. The atmosphere is designed to be rugged but it is clean and cozy and has a nice mix of bar seats, tables, and booths. The staff is very friendly and attentive. And, well, the food... it is ALL $4.95. Yep, that's right, burger? $4.95 (can't even do that at McDonalds anymore!) Nachos? $4.95. Pulled Pork Sandwich? $4.95 Ceasar's Salad? $4.95. The menu isn't large but it covered the basics in bar food and will feed anyone in a finicky party that understands you're at a bar. The burger is better than what you might expect from cheap fare and if you recognize that you're getting what you pay for, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The Dime is a welcome addition to the Drive as the prices continue to rise and the bars all restyle themselves as Main Street or Kits wannabes. Seriously though guys... We like to go here at least once a month. I usually order the pulled pork burger which comes with just enough fries. It is quite yummy---especially when you consider you are paying just $4.95 for the meal---probably about 1/2 of what you would pay elsewhere. Sometimes, if I'm really hungry I have the quinoa and green apple salad as well. Still have a meal for under $12! My partner always has the Dime burger which he seems to really like---he has remarked that he likes it better than a Whitespot burger. For $4.95 for any meal, you obviously aren't going to be expecting "fine dining" but definitely the food is good, and there is usually a game on the big screen tvs or some hipster watching to be had! read more

Nice casual bar on the Drive - $4.95 for all food - the pulled pork sandwich with fries is a steal at this price. Bartenders are dope as well - I really can't remember the last time a bartender in Vancouver went out of his way to introduce himself to me - in a "Hi, I'm ____. I will be handling your alcoholism tonight" way. I have a friend that absolutely refuses to drink on the Drive because of 'those people on the Drive"... you know, the earthy and semi-hipster crowd. But The Dime is pretty low-key and lacks pretension. There's enough TVs around the bar if you want to catch a game, but it's not trying to be a sports bar. Just a casual pub with cheap food and a small selection of decent brews on tap. I dig it. Would love it more if they had more draught lines... Okay, so I've been putting off writing a review of The Dime for a while because I just wasn't sure what to say, but the Waitress, Sara, the other day put me in my place for being the Duchess and not having reviewed, saying I was one of "those people". We chuckled and I agreed. So, The Dime is a relatively new, hip joint on Commercial Drive where all food is $4.95. You see this concept on Granville (at least last time I was there, which may have been forty-five years ago) and I think it's super awesome we have it on le Drive now. Let the days of the $12 burger die! The portions aren't huge and the food isn't amazing, but what it *is* is a $4.95 meal that is certainly satisfying and pretty tasty! The drinks are a bit pricy, and it always feels weird when you spend more on your drink than on your meal, but I guess that's where they must bring in a lot of revenue. Now, I had an incident a while back where I ordered a curry dish and it came with chunks of chicken in it. As a lifelong vegetarian, I was absolutely mortified. It's really disconcerting when an error that huge can be made, not just for dietary restrictions of preference, but what if someone had an allergy? But it was handled with absolute grace and kindness from the Manager who came over and gave me a personal heartfelt apology and bought all of our drinks. I want to give them 3.5 stars, but am rounding it up rather than down because I think they have potential. They're only 2 weeks old and still working out a few of the kinks, like running out of things, but the bar staff were very pleasant and responsive. Food was slow in coming, but when it did, I was highly impressed - the veggie burger is the richest, tastiest veggie burger that I've had in a long time - really gives you that "meaty" burger experience. I wasn't even sure it WAS veggie at first, but they assured me that's usually the response, and on closer examination it was more veggie-like! Two girls next to me also were thrilled about their quinoa salads. I see what Morgan means about it being like The Warehouse. I was hoping it would be a little more funky/quirky and a little less, uh, Warehousey. But it's a decent place to drop in and get some cheap pub food and a beer, and I think once they've settled in and gotten the hang of things, they could fit in just fine on the Drive. read more

For the price, you can't go wrong. My husband and I discovered this place a little while ago and it's our new favourite local. We share three plates (at $4.95 per plate!) and are full and happy :) The food is surprisingly sophisticated and everything we've tried has been very tasty and fresh. We also can bring our small fry (yes, it's a restaurant!) and he gets a Dime burger plain. Who cares if there's no kid menu -- for $5, we're all happy! Plus they have a Wednesday wing night with a fantastic Korean wing that's to die for. The space itself is kind of quirky -- it sure looks like a bar, with a dark and intimate interior, pretty much solely populated by tall barstools and tables. The music choices tend to the loud and eclectic, the multiple tvs to sports, and the clientele to the friendly, but hey! It's all part of the charm. Conveniently looked on Commercial Drive, I can see this being a popular dive bar for residents of East Van. There is public transportation that runs along Commercial Drive with the Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station not too far away. We also found free street parking about a block & a half east of Commercial Drive and the cross street where The Dime is located. We came down seeking cheap eats and TVs to watch Monday Night Football. If you're looking to get into a conversation or two, definitely sit at the bar. You can easily strike up a conversation with the bartender and sure to get into it with other nearby patrons. All their food is $4.95 with the purchase of a drink. Drinks start at $5 so my buddy and I ended up getting a burger & drink for about $10. Now there burgers & fries aren't anything to get excited about, I'm sure many of you can make a better burger at home, however this make for the best option when you want to get out of the home without having to spend much money. They accept cash & credit, NO DEBIT. They have a ATM right by the bar that adds a $2.50 fee on top of what your bank will charge you. While I wouldn't say this place is spacious, there is plenty of seating available for groups and the place still didn't feel crowded. read more

"The food is less than five bucks!" my friend exclaimed and so, one evening this week, we discovered why that was. The Dime is fine. Really, it's fine. The drink selection you get is decent, the cocktails are only a little bit weak and the Internet's Best Fails videos that play while you have your dinner (showing such things as snot bursting out of a baby's nose or a grown woman falling off a playground swing) are all perfectly tolerable. The less-than-five-bucks meals that I've had here absolutely fit the definition of food and are unquestionably things that can be eaten by a human. They've been overcooked burgers (with plank-hard buns), slightly dry meat, depressed fries and perfectly cromulent salads. They even turned up within an hour. The Dime is establishment equivalent of the sibling that you have who can't really be bothered, or the kid in class who did the minimum amount to pass. Who knows? Had a friend in town and my missus was asleep, so we went to see what the Drive would offer us on a Wednesday at 11PM. The sign for 25 cent wings Wednesday got me all hungry. I'm a sucker for wings, and for 25 cents, why not ORDER 20?!? Note: must be accompanied by a beverage, preferably alcoholic. With the shrapnel in my back pocket, I was also able to grab a few pints of Kokanee ($4.95 each, not the $4.00 I heard from the lovely waitress). I ordered the salt and pepper wings. Bad choice. The wings with dry and flavor-less, and I needed to buy some ranch dipping sauce and hot sauce ($1.00 each). My friend ordered the home fries with garlic aioli. The home fries are delicious and do NOT need extra salt. Highly recommend that. Service was great and friendly, and I was warmly welcomed by my new neighbours with extra beer and shots. Turned into a great night after a few. Will I be back? Most likely... it's right around the corner from my apartment and a good place to hang out with friends if I make too much noise at home. We came for the value (camon, $4.95 dishes??)... and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food! We had the perogies, the chilli, the korean chicken bites, the mac and cheese, the gnocchi and the mini donuts. All of them (maybe except the mac and cheese) were had the appearance and taste of much better size and value. I love the fact that the menu was short, because I'm one of those indecisive kids. We sat at the table closest to the door and we were there on a Sunday eve, so it wasn't too noisy. The service was surprisingly decent too, our waters were topped up and our fountain beverages replaced on the regular. I combined some food with a double Rye n Ginger, I think the bartender must have taken the second shot because it was more of an ice and ginger drink, that's no way to get me loaded. I was also periodically stalled in drinking because they ran out of drink menus! No joke, the bar didn't have enough drink menus...hmmmm. Maybe someone's collecting them all to plaster on their bedroom walls as art or someone definitely missed the boat on printing drink menus...fire their ass. I just went here this past week for the 3rd time ever and all 3 times I have gotten out of it exactly what I expected. All food is $4.95 and the portions are decent/good considering. The wings are what I've ordered every time and they are pretty good even though there are only 4 flavors to choose from I believe. The burger seems to be a pretty big hit as it's probably the best bang for your buck and comes with a small side of fries. Also the salads have been good especially the beet salad in which my girlfriend enjoyed a lot. The drinks are a bit more expensive than the food but still reasonable for the area and comparable to many other places. I will say can get very loud and the floor seemed to be slippery every night we've gone so just be careful when walking around unless you enjoy the taste of the ground ( I don't judge) Somewhat of a typical bar scene with non typical food that I will keep going back for. read more

It's right at home on the Drive; rustic and pubbish, without seeming to invite the sports-bar crowd. It can be a little noisy during peak hours, but that's probably a function of being ridiculously cheap and always busy. If you're the type to be put off by background noise, maybe you want to pay more than $4.95 for dinner. I've been at all times of day, so I can say that in my experience the food is always good (especially the pulled pork sandwich or the gnocchi; burger ain't shabby neither), the drinks well-poured, but the service hit-and-miss. If they're not too busy, the staff are really friendly, chatty and at ease. If they're slammed, they can come off a bit flustered. I can't imagine how anybody could be too perturbed after dining here even if, for whatever reason, they hated this place; there's so little to lose. read more

At least La Rocca got replaced by an okay restaurant. I was shocked when I saw that La Rocca had closed. When my friends suggested we go there as Stop #2 on our Annual Day O' Fun, I was excited because it was a new place to go. Table for nine please... it was a bit of a wait, but worth it. We got seated at a high top table by the nice open window. $4.95 for anything on the menu? Wowie! I ordered the Beet and Goat Cheese Salad and the Lemon Pepper Wings. My husband ordered the Nachos for 1 and D ordered the Korean Chicken. Down the table, there were orders of gnocchi and more wings. J got the pulled pork sandwich. The salad was pretty good: the right amount of goat cheese and greens and beets. The beets seemed a little under done... maybe they're out of a can, but they seemed a little crunchy. I like em more tender. The wings tasted a little weird. Have you ever bought one of those glass rimmers from Winners? You know the ones for Margaritas? The salt tastes a little funny, but you justify it because you got it on sale at Winners... yeah, the lemon pepper tasted like that. The fried wings were good once I ate away the lemon pepper. The nachos for one were good. Melt cheese on most things and I am happy. The portion size was good for one. I barely stole any from my husband... Would I go back? - Yes! Despite parts of "The Dime" being busy, loud, and sticky; they had great food and even better drinks at a decent price. Where can you find a dish for $4.99? or a cocktail at that price? Cheaper drinks are much appreciated, now that the liquor tax has been reintroduced. Has the charm of a dive bar with an eclectic mix of staff and patrons. It's a weirdo hang out, for sure, with the right mix of musicians, oldster locals, punk rockers of all ethnicities. Almost like a restaurant version of the United Nations! One things for sure...if you are from the 'burbs. Probably best to stay far away and stick to your Earl's, Noodlebox, or boring sports bar. This place ain't for you, nor is it looking for people who hit the Drive to "slum it". Sad they got rid of their PBR special, but they still have timely drink specials thruout the week. My only grievance is that it is expensive (for me) to drink there on a consistent basis. I suppose that's the trade off for inexpensive food. They have tweaked their menu lately. The items I've tried, I've been happy with: Kale Ceasar, Nachos, Wings (which are on special every Wed.), Burger, and Pizza. Unfortunately their Artichoke dip has been wildly inconsistent. One time...creamy and cheesy...another bland and somewhat chunky. But I think it's new, and maybe they're still tweaking it. It's impressive that for $4.95+ that the food is of good quality. As much as it is somewhat a piece of the Granville strip, it's nice to have a new watering hole on the Drive. Pros: Cheap cheap cheap! All plates are 4.95 and super shareable. The drinks aren't too bad either, which seems to be a general problem on the Drive (drinks being too pricey). The atmosphere is nice and the service is great. Cons: I only really have one - the food is incredibly mediocre. I realize you often get what you pay for, but I feel like the improvements that need to be made to the food here won't necessarily cost anything. The garlic prawns were bland, the nachos dry, the yam fries too salty, etc etc... not anything that would ever deter me from coming back, but something to definitely improve on. Passed by here on Italian Day and decided to drop in. Was not disappointed! I got the pulled pork sandwich with bacon, and my friends got the mac and cheese, the shrimp, and the dime burger. My sandwich was delicious; the carrots really pulled it together. All three of us loved the curry mac and cheese! And my wallet was not emptied at the end of the day. My boyfriend and I were in Vancouver in October and he was getting tattooed down the road (shout out to East Van Inc!) and after a consult we asked where should we go for a bite to eat before we start the tattoo? As out of towners I find this is the best approach to finding great eats! The girl at the shop said hmm if you like cheap pub-type food head to the Dime. Let me say, I fell in love with East Van, and the Dime just fits this neighbourhood so well. We walked in and sat down near the window and checked out the menus. While at the Dime the people watching was likely the best part of the experience. We had some very down-and-out just got their dose at the methadone clinic people adjacent to us and at the bar were some rowdy Kiwis. We settled in on a couple of dishes (under $5 - what? cool) we had a quinoa salad and some nachos. The food came quick and we enjoyed what we had... then we decided it wasn't enough so ordered some wings. The wings were delish!! Really for me though this place is not about the food so much as it's about the people and the atmosphere and the affordability. It's quirky and sweet and off-beat sort of like the neighbourhood which, again, I must say I really really enjoyed. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Vancouver. read more

The Dime is a really good place to go, specially if you don`t have much money and still want to have a great time. It's a perfect place to watch some sports game, listening to music, eating good food. There is always good music playing if you enjoy the sound of Rock n' Roll music, which makes the atmosphere quite enjoyable. The music is loud enough so you can enjoy it and still have a conversation with those sitting at the table with you. The food is cheap, with most of the menu being five dollars average. The Dime Burger is a great meal, delicious with an amazing fresh made mayo sauce that gives the burger an even better taste. The yam fries that came with the burger were surprisingly good as well, making the experience even better. It was way better than asking for the same in similar restaurants. It took my friends and I a while to be welcomed into the place, it was a very busy night, but once we made our orders, everything went smoothly and the staff was very nice to us. read more

It is a small menu --yes--...but to have such a place with $4.95 choices...what did you expect????? It is a small, quaint place that offers 15 meal choices for $4.95. More choices make more overhead which means raising menu prices. If you want more choices for your dinner...then go another place.... Heck...go across the street to Marcellos where you can spend $30 for your ONE of your choices. (then again....read Marcello's reviews before you go...you can save that $30 and may feel that The Dime is not that bad after all.) To make the comment that there is not enough vegetarian or vegan dishes....?...???..?..?... As a vegetarian of 18 years... I was VERY surprised that I actually had a CHOICE on the menu. Out of the 15 items offered, I had the choice of 5 dinners and 4 salads. WOW. 9 out of 15 items that a vegetarian can order!!!!. How much more do you want from a meat eating society & pub??? And all for $4.95 each. That is such a rare occurrence. So to complain that a place that offers a $4.95 menu with 9/15 items vegetarian......and does not offer enough veggie dishes...uummm I think you are in the wrong place. And as for VEGAN dishes...well...then you really need to go to a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. If you're expecting a badass Patrick "pain don't hurt" Swayze when you walk in the door then you've come to the right place. Well he's not actually there, and this is not an actual roadhouse where" nobody wins a fight", but it is a pretty sweet new bar that caters to a bit harder edge than the normal sterotypical Commercial Drive denizen. You won't find any dreadlocks, but you might find some dudes with tattoos on their heads. The food is all under $5. I tried the Veggie Burger and was pretty impressed. It was probably just a basic Yves burger (not certain) but they added pea shoots and avocado which you wouldn't even find on a $12 veggie burger. Their music selection was a breath of fresh air with some metal tunes (Skid Row, Iron Maiden) mixed in with some Stones and other good stuff at a volume that says "my way or the highway". Everything on the menu is $4.95 I believe the same guy who owns The Warehouse and The Factory owns this place too. They have been open for about two weeks now and like the other reviews have said are still working on some things. The menu is decent, I would happily be able to order anything on the menu. Today I decided on 'the Dime' burger which comes with the works. It was a decent sized burger, the meat patty was nice and juicy not at all dry. Just the way I like it. The burger came with fries, I kind of wish I would have substituted them for yam fries instead. Service was great! The food came out quickly and my server was very friendly and attentive to my needs without being annoying like some servers can be sometimes. I've recently moved to The Drive. This is, by far THE WORST place I've encountered so far. And I mean THE WORST on all 4 aspects: food, drinks, hospitality & atmosphere. The waitress was very rude. Not once did she smile at us. The only time I saw her smile was when she retreated behind the bar to chat it up with her colleagues. Then someone had the genius idea of letting the bartender plug in her iPod to determine which songs would be played. For the next hour straight, she played an assortment of Backstreet Boys, Hansen, and a lot of other teeny-bopper garbage. Complaints from fellow customers began pouring in, begging them to change the music. The waitresses just kept replying with a condescending, snide "If you don't like it you can put change in the jukebox and change it." before shooting a cheeky smile. So we did just that. My friend got up and paid to play an old-school rap song. It was a moderately clean song --not filled with too much cuss words. But as soon as the song came on, the bartender turned it down to the point where you could barely even hear it. We were all flabbergasted by this level of rudeness. A man and his girlfriend got up to leave after complaining about the music earlier, and as they were leaving, the waitress taunted them with a grandiose wave and said "Thank you, come again!" in a very saucy, demeaning way. Her and the bartender then laughed like hyenas as the couple walked out the door. The food is so bad. I forget the name of my dish, but it was cooked prawns on some sort of toasted flat bread with sliced avocados. I knew it being only $4.95 that it wasn't going to be high-quality stuff, but... oh my God. The prawns were very overdone, and they didn't even take the crap-sacks out, which takes like 5 seconds per prawn. The "flat bread" looked to literally be regular bread that someone flattened out with a rolling pin. It was also very soggy. As for the avocados: they were hard and flavourless. Clearly not ripe enough to be eaten. I normally visit a place at least twice before commenting, but this is easily one of the worst bar/restaurant experiences of my life. I want to keep typing, but I feel as if this should be enough to get my point across. DO NOT visit this place. Horrific food, horrific service. Everything on the menu is $4.95, and the gnocchi is freaking delicious, so are the mini donuts and well - quite frankly - so was everything else I tried. No, strongbow but you know what ? The great service, yummy and reasonably priced food makes up for that, plus they had another dry cider that I enjoyed just as well :) I was even in need of some first aid due to someone droping a glass in my general vicintity and a lovely gentleman was kind enough to clean me up, throw some bandaids on my feet and wipe the blood of my adorable shoes !! Went to The Dime today. Haven't been here for a while. The food is ok, the price certainly is right. Usually the service isn't that good. It was good today. I got the breakfast sandwich with a side Caesar salad. The sandwich was fine. The salad was horrendous. The lettuce had a funk to it as did the croutons. Also, no dressing. It was a bowl full of gross iceberg with Parmesan and two croutons. And, yes, again, no dressing. read more
