(twentysix/thirty) Commercial Drive is foreign territory for me. I don't live nearby, I've never lived nearby, and for me, downtown was always the hotspot. Then when I got a little older, and a tad more confident navigating the transit system, I ventured to Kits and elsewhere. Still, the Drive remained undetected by CarolynGPS, merely a blank edge of the map not yet filled in. I've only ever walked as far as Belgian Fries (it was once, and I was desperate for new poutine!), and I really regret it. I haven't had the chance to experience yet, but there seems to be many cool places on this street. I finally got a chance to actually look in the windows of restaurants that I've bookmarked and pondered for months! This wasn't the first time I had heard the words "The Dime". Not on my Yelp-list, but I had heard through the grapevine that it was the cool, hip spot to grab some chow. It was pretty packed when we got in, mind you it WAS later on in the evening. Luckily, we snagged a table in the corner (I always prefer to sit at corner tables, I'm not sure why). The tables appeared to be a mix of booths and hightops, and in that sense, we did not luck out. I stand at about 5'0, and being so incredibly far from my dear friend the ground is a little frightening. Hightops = not really my favorite, but that's just the luck of the draw. Let me start off by saying it is LOUD in here. The mixture of music and the booming voices of moderately intoxicated 20-something-year-olds all around you does not make for an atmosphere fit for conversation. From across the table, I couldn't very well hear what my friend was saying, and it didn't take long for us to sit beside eachother rather than across to minimize the gap and solve the problem. This definitely isn't a spot for your hours-long, deep conversation. Yam fries are something I have just grown to enjoy in the past year or so, and sadly I'm still obsessed with them, so we started with those. They came out quickly, and the portion size was good. It was definitely enough for two people to enjoy. The red pepper mayo was delightful, but the fry to dipping sauce ratio was definitely off. One ramequin of mayo was not enough for this yam mountain! That aside, the fries were crisp but not overdone, and well salted. Yum! Next, my friend followed my lead with the pulled pork sandwich. At this point in my dining experience, The Dime was sittin' pretty at a four-star rating with the success of the yam fries. Again, our food came out fairly quickly. Certainly not the best pulled pork I've ever had, but for the price, how could I complain? I enjoyed the nice, soft bun it came on. When I'm absolutely famished and have no desire aside from getting food into my belly as quickly as possible, crispy, crunchy bread doesn't make things easy, but this bun did me right. This one, while tasty and enjoyable, brought our rating down half a star. Dessert (my favorite!) is always the deciding factor. The Dime has a small menu, so naturally there was only one dessert (correction: there was an additional option of fried pumpkin with cream {I think} on the specials menu, but the idea of just eating pumpkin doesn't gel too well with me). After my recent Playland excursion, I was definitely feeling the 'coffee and doughnuts' idea. The presentation of the doughnuts was actually quite nice, I wish I would've taken a picture of it. The toffee expresso sauce was lightly drizzled ontop, and it was delicious! I wish they had put a little more, or even filled a ramequin halfway for dipping, but maybe I'm just greedy! The doughnuts themselves were heavenly. Crisp with cinnamon sugar on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside; tasty bites of deep-fried happiness that had me smiling from start to finish. My overwhelming satisfaction to my sweet craving brings this joint back up to a four star rating. To make things even better, everything on the menu is $4.95. Pretty much the grossest food I have ever eaten in my life, the tacos taste like dogfood and I am being kind on that. Your food might be cheap but prepare to be dinged for every extra thing like side orders of sauce ect. Drink prices are above average too. The staff is great, i will say that. the music is so loud you have to yell to have any conversation. I might stop for a beer there as long as it's bottled and I don't have to have a conversation with anyone. read more

I have been a customer of this establishment for the last 6 months since moving from another province. I have eaten here numerous times a week since my arrival and have to say the place has gone on a fast downwards slope. The last 5 visits have been atrocious. Between the servers playing on their phones, flirting with one another, passing free drinks to friends, plate sizes drastically becoming smaller over the months and very dodgy quality in food. and ignoring simple requests, I am sad to say a restaurant I once loved, has recently left a very sour outlook and I do not see myself recommending the dime to anyone. read more

Great pub on the Drive! Who doesn't like $4.95 menus? I didn't eat their food, but my boyfriend raves about them all the time, from their burgers to their quinoa salad. Definitely must tries on my list! I did, however, enjoy their corona cocktails and a Goose Island IPA. Service isn't perfectly on point, hence my 4/5, but it's a great dive bar where you're sure to have fun, get rowdy, drink something good, and eat something yummy. read more

Don't come here unless you don't care about good service.. Sure the food is cheap but the service is horrible!! When my girlfriend discovered a fly in her drink we told one of the waitress but she did not care. We waited 15 minutes for the other waitresss to come by and replace it and she did not even compensate or said sorry. They seem stuck up and hate their jobs. They treated us really crappy. Went to The Dime today. Haven't been here for a while. The food is ok, the price certainly is right. Usually the service isn't that good. It was good today. I got the breakfast sandwich with a side Caesar salad. The sandwich was fine. The salad was horrendous. The lettuce had a funk to it as did the croutons. Also, no dressing. It was a bowl full of gross iceberg with Parmesan and two croutons. And, yes, again, no dressing. read more

I quite like this place for what it is. Some people have complained about the lack of selection (especially for veggie/vegan types), or that the food isn't spectacular, but how can you complain about food for $4.95?! I'm always satisfied. I've tried the nachos, the burger, the breakfast sandwich, and the veggie burger, and I always leave content and totally full. I've been in here a few times now, quite good! Great appies/food for $4.95, good beer prices, and I have always had prompt, pleasant service here. This is a no frills place with inexpensive menu items and ambiance like it's your uncle's garage. You get what you pay for here. The food is alright and the portions modest but for $5 an item what more could you want. The service can be spotty but there are some good servers that make it a pleasant experience. They have wing day and taco day and they can be relatively good deals but don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. People watching can be fun if you get a table by the window. The biggest drag is the volume of the music. It's almost impossible to have a discussion there. I'd rate it higher if the music was just dropped to a realistic volume but over all it's a pretty decent spot. read more

I don't know why I am bothering to write any kind of a sound review for a place which charges $5 for all it's food. But, it's not a bad spot. I mean, it's average. The food takes forever to come out (cooks are probably underpaid), or it's a way to make you drink more. The place is blasting loud music which is terrible as it is, but the place also seems to attract groups of screaming girls which doesn't help. We ended up getting our food to go because we couldn't sit there listening to all the noise much longer. That being said, our server was good, and the food was pretty good for $5. Is a little dark to read the menu and the bathroom was filthy, but acceptable for a dive bar. Beers seemed pricier than other similar places. The homemade tomato soup tasted like someone watered down a jar of ragu, salt and pepper wings were pretty dry but what do you expect. Pulled pork sandwich was decent but the bun tasted stale. Service was solid except they had over served a guy at the bar who was rather obnoxious and eventually took his shirt off and was doing a belly wave... read more

Yelpers are pretty hard on this place. Yeah the service is a little sucky, the tables are sticky and people always smoke too close the door and windows but, the music is awesome, the food is incredible value for the price and its always busy with a laid back vibe. If your paying $5 for a pulled pork BBQ sando with fries and soft brioche bun then there has to be a catch- the afore mentioned negatives are exactly the catch. I've been to this place a few times and love it every time. There food is good for only being $4.95. The perogies are delicious and their dime burger is good too. The portion size is good and you don't have to spend a lot to leave full. In fact their entree's are enough to fill you up...and again it's 5 bucks. I love that they carry Parrallel 49 (but for some reason that's not on their menu). I noticed it because I was sitting at the bar. The service has always been excellent. read more

I enjoyed this place, the appies were good and the prices more than reasonable. Our server was wonderful. The only negative is they don't accept debit, so you have to use their ATM machine if you're out of cash, which costs $4.25 in fees. They do accept credit cards, but I'm sure the owners get quite the kickback from the ATM machine. The other bars (The Warehouse and one other) owned by this same company have the same set-up. I guess one of the owners must have ownership in a stand-alone ATM company. read more

The food is quite good. Creative, tasty and nicely priced. Most all plates are $4.95 each. good beer on tap. Lotsa TVs for game nights / sports fans. Just came back from trying this place for the first time. Do not go here! Ordered G&Ts. The first two we ordered were great. The last one was pure tonic with no Gin. Seriously? To us it felt like a pure rip off move.... serve two good mixed drinks, then a third with no alcohol and charge full price. Food is $4.95, therefore, you get what you pay for. Don't expect much don't worry, it's okay. It's trying to be the Furniture Warehouse, however, it is there. I asked for nachos with no cheese, however, you would think that they would load it with veggies, however, there was 1 tsp of corn, a few pitted and pickled jalapenos. They still charged me $4.95 for subing Guacamole for cheese. The music was depressing which fitted my mood, encouraging for those who wanted to drown their sorrows. They did uplift things a bit but that was just when I was about to leave. My meal came out in less than 5 minutes, however, I was almost the only one there in the afternoon during a study class break. Customer service was decent for the establishment. read more

Delicious, cheap, eclectic. These are the words that best describe this place. They are not meant for fancy dinners or kiddies' birthdays and there's a certain beauty in knowing exactly what to expect when you walk in the door. We did not expect much coming in here knowing that all the food was about $5- We ordered three dishes for the two of us because we expected them to be small. We got the chow mien, the butternut squash risotto and the calamari. Each of the portions was much bigger than we anticipated. Big enough to be a small if you're not a heavy eater. We really liked everything we ordered - the harissa on the risotto was such a nice touch and the chow mien was so flavorful. Also, the servers were super nice and quick. The atmosphere was a bit divey but very comfortable. We saw kids in there too which was cool. We will definitely keep this place in mind if we are in Vancouver BC again. read more

Um I was excited to come here when it first opened. I heard that the food was good. I went a few times since it opened, it always looks really busy inside. The staff have been okay. My last experience was bad mostly cause the food, I ordered a Veggie Burger and it wasn't hot at all. Borderline cold. We sat down and had to ask for menus, she came back about a minute later. It ended up being okay because the food took awhile. My friend didn't even finish her meal. I ate mine cause I was hungry. Overall less and impressed by this place. read more

Some problems with the Dime: 1) Not having enough Wings on Wing Wednesday seems like a pretty big oversight. The poor wait staff having to constantly tell people "Yah we're like, an hour and half behind on wings coming out right now because so many people are ordering them" is torturous. Shouldn't you have a dedicated Wing Guy in the kitchen? Plus you do this every Wednesday. How have you not figured it out? 2) Drinks that make you sober. So having had 4 drinks elsewhere on the Drive, getting tipsy, heading to the dime for a few whiskeys. That then sober me up. Um. So. I think your alcohol is broken. 3) Serving underage kids, getting shut down, then over correcting and not serving alcohol to a 35 year old man with a slightly expired drivers license. I realize this is the letter of the law, having valid ID, but maybe if you didn't serve 17 year olds, you could serve 35 year olds. I get that the drinks are expensive to make up for the food being cheap. But if I'm going to leave with the same, average priced bill at the end of the night, I'd rather go somewhere that had better food and drinks with alcohol in them. This place is probably perfect for those 17 year olds who can't handle their booze anyways. read more

The food and the low cost for it make it a regular destination. Service is great and attentive, no complaints there. But I have to mention the Caesar that I ordered- a double, it came in a short glass with only a lemon and lime wedge for garnish. I could not taste any Worcestershire, Tabasco nor any vodka at all!
