I consider the Dining Room one of the Top 10 Restaurants with a View in the State of Washington. The panoramic window view overlooking the Methow Valley is, for lack of a better word, simply amazing! This restaurant is part of the upscale Sun Mountain Lodge and well worth the 17min drive up the mountain from Winthrop. I was seated in a cozy booth directly facing the window front for the full experience and very much enjoyed the PNW cuisine as well. I ordered a Manhattan, the tomato caprese, and the ribeye steak. This was all top quality from the cocktail to the steak and I admire the attention to detail and creativity of the Chef. Of note, the steak was delicious, high quality meat, correctly prepared. Service was superb; the Dining Room will definitely become my new go-to restaurant when in Winthrop! read more

Day 1: Breakfast was good! We were pleasantly surprised by the generous portion sizes, and the service was excellent. The cozy, cabin-like atmosphere was charming and perfectly suited to the setting. Day 2: Unfortunately, dinner was a completely different experience. After enjoying breakfast so much, we were really looking forward to celebrating our wedding anniversary there. Sadly, the service was extremely disappointing. After we ordered, our server never checked back on us. An hour later, he finally stopped by and asked, "How was your dinner?" We were shocked and had to tell him that he had never brought us our food! We asked to speak with the manager. Unfortunately, the manager wouldn't make eye contact, and brushed the situation aside. The manager didn't explain what had happened or tell us how he planned to improve in the future. It was such a disappointing experience, especially on our anniversary. It was surprising to have two completely opposite experiences at the same place. I don't think I would trust sending there now for breakfast and especially dinner! read more

I ate here a couple of nights ago and was disappointed. This restaurant used to be a gem and now it feels like it's just serving food to a captive audience. The food is overpriced m, and they charge a 5% fee on top of it to provide workers "a living wage". This fee is not disclosed anywhere prior to your meal being over. The food itself is "fine" but it is nothing special. The burger is a burger. The steak is a steak. Nothing more. Service is ok... the waitstaff appear to be seasonal workers with no food service industry experience. They're all nice people but seem awkward and will come by the table at strange times. First the view and location are phenomenal. With such great ambiance you expect the service and food to be top notch, but it wasn't. The pan roasted chicken was dry and underwhelming. The roasted veggies and potatoes were good, but the chicken should be juicy. The ribeye steak was just ok. I've had way better ribeyes from Texas Roadhouse. This has so much potential but fell short of what it should be for the price and location. The only really good thing was the chocolate torte with the dark chocolate ice cream. Our server seemed to be having a very bad day and overwhelmed. The dinning area was only about 50% full but the staff was struggling. My 70 dollar ribeye was under cooked and I've had better ribeyes for 25 dollars. The view and property were amazing but the dollar amount did not match the service or food quantity. read more

The service and view were wonderful but the food has been dismal for 5 years. My last experience supported that knowledge. To be safe, I ordered a Caesar salad, thinking what could a kitchen do to a Caesar salad, I will tell you. The lettuce was not hand cut or torn, the croutons were the kind you buy at Safeway. When my dining partner asked to have a small Caesar side salad to accompany her meal, we were told it was impossible , so I asked for a small plate and shared my salad. Our other dining partner order 1/2 roast chicken and was served an airline breast, covered in cream sauce. The dessert was just as bad. Come on people! The Valley has a beautiful Farmers Market and wonderful meats and pasta made fresh and available to everyone. I wanted to love The Dining Room at Sun Mountain Lodge. The room itself is rustic and beautiful, all of the staff were as sweet as can be, the service was wonderful, and the food was beautifully plated. However, the menu does not have many vegetarian/pescatarian options, and what they did have had little to no flavor. The rockfish barely had salt and pepper on it, and while the caramelized onion sauce that went with it was good, I needed so much more of it to balance the complete lack of flavor from the fish. The acorn squash was cooked well, but could have used more seasoning. I enjoyed the avocado toast the next morning, however. The sunchoke hummus was delicious and made for a great, fresh take. I do want to mention that our extended family had other entrées containing meat and enjoyed them, so it seems like there is room for opportunity with the vegetarian/pescatarian crowd. read more

I wanted so badly to love it but the food quality is hit or miss and for those prices that shouldn't be the case. I stopped in once during my stay and twice on the bar side. The dining room is lovely, it's quiet and not too busy. Staff are extremely kind I enjoyed everyone I interacted with. I tried the Waygu Short Rib the meat itself lacked flavor, the pancetta wrapped shrimp were delicious. Mezcal old fashion was also delicious. We opted for the Sun Mountain red blend by Maryhill. It was excellent and it went well with our steaks. I had the ribeye and my husband had the filet. COVID-19 review. Stayed at the Sun Mountain Lodge for the long weekend and the meals at the Dining Room did not disappoint! Although the menu is limited to 5 entrée options, they are absolutely delicious. The staff is amazing and super flexible with dietary restrictions. They are also following all mandated protocols and operating at limited capacity in order to ensure 6 ft distancing between all diners. Important to note that they're not accepting walk-ins and reservations are required to dine-in. P.S. Don't skip dessert, the cheesecake is SHEER PERFECTION. My wife and I recently spent two nights here. We had an early evening meal in the bar and two breakfast and a dinner meal in the dining room. Both areas were comfortable and have great views of the surroundings. The service was great. The servers were attentive and friendly. While we expected the prices to be higher, after all, the setting is exceptional. However, if the the food quality and quantity is to be commensurate with the price there needs to be improvement. The breakfasts were the best value. The eggs, bacon and toast were average but the fruit bowl made the breakfast. The bar food,I.e. soup and sandwich was good but the bacon on the BLT was tough and made the sandwich hard to eat. The evening meal ,which had some high spots, was disappointing. We both had the lamb chops. They were cooked to order and were served with a very tasty sauce. Unfortunately they were cut so thin that there wasn't much meat on them. They were served with a mound of pureed eggplant that was tasteless and had a green thing on them that was equally tasteless. Overall the dish did not look appetizing. Lastly the price of the wine we selected, while a good choice, was priced at $50+ and was later found to be about $18 at a wine store. Now I expect to pay about twice the retail price in a restaurant but this seems excessive. read more

Views are still breathtaking but I demanded our attempt at a fancy dinner be complimentary because the kitchen is soooooooo slow. NOT the serving staff, but the kitchens Taste was good, not mind-blowing, but no way am I paying that kind of cash to wait 70* for soup. Go into town to eat! Totally understand that the staff is stressed from the fires, COVID and shortage of help, but try and be a little nicer to the customers. The gal in charge of seating was very rude time after time.. We were not the only customers who noticed. Many of us cancelled our dinner reservations for the entire stay at Sun Mountain and ate in town instead. Also... our waiter kept trying to sell us one of his steak knives (a side business for him). We watched him work his business and pass out his business cards at each of his tables. Not expected for such a caliber restaurant. The food was also very salty.. We had terribly over salted steaks, salmon and even vegetables. They all tasted like they were cooked at the same time. We've been coming to Sun Mt for years, and are still waiting for the Dining Room to catch up to the quality of the rest of the lodge. Hopefully will improve by our next visit. read more

This review is based on 2 breakfasts we had during our recent stay, as well as a wine tasting with Don in the cellar. Breakfast is surprisingly standard - nothing fancy or very creative. However, everything is made with fresh, local ingredients. Sometimes simpler is the best way to go. And the service is attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed sitting by the window for the view over a relaxing breakfast. We also attended one of Don's wine tastings in the cellar. He had a over a dozen wines you could choose from and we selected 4 each for $20. He started us off with one of his picks, we moved to our 4 picks, and then he through in a bonus tasting. It was really fun to sit around the big table tasting with a cornucopia of others fluttering in and out. Don is very knowledgable and offered a discount on bottles as well. We took 6 home. Thank you Don! Next time we will try dinner here. Overall a lovely place. read more

What an incredible dining experience! Whatever you do, be sure and request a window seat. This side of the Alps, I'm not sure you can find a more breathtaking Mountain View than the one offered by the dining room. The wait staff is attentive, courteous and knowledgeable. The menu is exquisite. We enjoyed the most delicate, yet savory, mushroom puff pastry with melted cheese. It was like fondue in a pastry. The locally sourced beef made for an incredible tenderloin entree and the wild mushroom risotto was out of this world. If you're staying at the Resort, be sure to dine here. The menu in 2021 was great. Hubs and I came here back in 2021 and had several wonderful meals and there were plenty of gluten free vegetarian options. I don't know what they did between then and now but it's now awful. I don't say that lightly. There are VERY few gluten free vegetarian options. We tried the butternut fritters. Disgustingly overwhelming cumin flavor. Were they trying to force a Mexican flavor into it? It was confusing and not good. We tried the smoked carrots. Delicious flavor profile and unique BUT grossly undercooked. We tried the winter salad. Truly the most bitter vile thing I've ever tasted. Even hubs couldn't tackle it. This of course after the person who seated us didn't give us menus and it was a good 15+ minutes before we were noticed. The menu feels completely scattered and disjointed. The execution of the menu items we were able to try was seriously lacking. I've traveled the world and tried so many wonderful foods but this? They need to hire a new chef and completely overhaul the menu. Pretty sure your standard housewife could do better at this point but for the prices they're charging, they need to get it together asap. I saw the table beside us sending food back too. You're not going to be able to financially sustain that indefinitely. We were offered dessert but declined. I'm frankly terrified of what new hideous food you're going to try to make us choke down. Just no. There's literally nowhere else for us to eat or we would have walked out and gone somewhere else...anywhere else...you know the kind of place where delicious and edible is served. I feel frustrated, ripped off, resentful, hungry....and oddly enough like crying after days of this situation. I'll probably come back to the resort but I will not not not eat here again. And in light of this, I'll be very hesitant in recommending anyone I care about come here and will of course tell them to avoid the on site food like the plague. read more

While staying at Sun Mountain Lodge, my family and I came to The Dining Room for dinner. We were seated right by the fire, which was warm and relaxing. Our server Johnathan was wonderful, very attentive and knowledgeable....recommending a delicious Brut Rose sparking wine to my mother, which she loved. Our meal started with a amuse bouche of steak tartar, horseradish and granny smith apple, so delicious! I ordered the mushroom strudel to start, which was amazing. The mushrooms were so tasty and the pastry around it was perfectly flakey. I highly recommend it! For dinner was the tenderloin with the cauliflower mash, the beef was so good and cooked just the way I liked it. For desert my hubby and I split the Bailey's cheesecake, which came with faux coffee beans (just chocolate), which I thought was a nice touch! From the moment we entered the restaurant, the ambiance felt very romantic & very serene. Although there were folks dressed up fancy & casual & just as many couples as there families with their children it felt like we were in a high class restaurant. There was a gentleman singing songs, people dancing & everyone was clapping. It was really delightful. Now for the food. We started out with the Broccoli soup which was rich in flavor. We ordered the tenderloin which melted in our mouths and we finished with warm apple pie dessert. YUM! Service was outstanding! I would definitely pick the dining room over the bar. I'm confused on why this place "needs a reservation"...I've never seen the restaurant packed my entire visit here. Tonight's visit was extremely disappointing. The two separate menus we received had conflicting, contradictory information on items that were listed as gluten free or not. Leads to a lack of confidence in the meal if you have to ask multiple questions... The salad was bitter, to the point that we couldn't finish it...I tried, but the flavor became unpalatable and I decided to stop torturing myself. The service was good, the lack of a hostess and being seated by someone in the bar led to not being given menus for almost ten minutes...the waitress was sweet, and helpful and was doing the best she could given the circumstances. But whomever the cook/chef was needs to be fired. We weren't the only ones complaining of poor food quality and the total inconsistency in the meal we had the previous night, to the one I just experienced was a complete contradiction. The ambiance was nice - aside from lack of heating. You could feel the cold, windy air outside penetrating through the windows. Would it kill them to add some felt of some kind or some foam insulation to keep the draft down. You could tell they're aware they have an issue because someone had caulked the other window and it was holding out SOME of the cold. Just seems like the new ownership of the entire resort has allowed the place to slip into some sort of disaster. Fix the problems right. Get the kitchen in line - ASAP and spare your wait staff from having to bear the burden of trying to make your restaurant appealing enough to the visitors. read more

My husband and I had the most romantic dinner at The Dining Room for his birthday! The food was to die for but, if it's possible, the view was the highlight. For dinner we both ordered the filet mignon which came with a little potato stack. The meat cut like butter- it was SO moist and flavorful. The potatoes were a little bland but it didn't spoil the plate. We both started with a salad. I had the Ceasar and my husband had an asparagus salad which he said was the best he has ever had! My Ceasar salad was good (dressing was AMAZING but there wasn't much of it). For dessert we split the strawberry cheesecake. It was a huge piece but we managed to finish the whole thing and, dangggg it was good! Check out the photo for the views- just incredible! I can't imagine a better dinner view in WA! Amazing! We had multiple good meals here including on the night they had a sprinkler problem that took out their kitchen. They called us while we were enroute and left a message that we'd be able to get simple stuff like salad and soup. But when we got there they were back up and running enough to make us some beautiful filets so that made it taste even better. The wait staff seemed to handle the fiasco really well so I give them all credit for that. Book tables in advance, like a week or so in advance and ask for window seats. Sunset is an incredible time there since the building is perched atop a hill with sweeping unobstructed views. You can appreciate the view everywhere but it's just a little better on the window. read more

We were sat at the window, greeted promptly with water, server Anthony recommended a great wine for us. We received yummy bread with olive oil and balsamic. Our salads arrived quickly, the Sun Mountain salad, delicious! We both ordered the beef tenderloin. Oh my gosh yum! The beef was perfectly cooked and EXTREMELY tender the sauce was to die for! The potatoes and veggies were delicious too! We got our wine refills right on time with the meal and water refills too. They brought out a little treat from the chef during dinner a goat cheese bite size stuffed fig mmm nice touch. We got our bill promptly after deciding we didn't want dessert and the chef sent out another bite sized coconut dessert treat. Very impressed! It was well worth the splurge! read more

Then there was Chris and Willow who bent over backwards to facilitate our priorities for a table and dinner. Lastly was Isabella, an attentive and friendly waitress. The view, the setting, and the cuisine. Two of us shared the mushroom strudel which was perfect, as it was rich. The hint of truffle with the deconstructed fondue lent to the overall tastiness of the dish. The ceasar salad we split next was better then most. Usually dont get excited about ceasars, but this one hit all the marks- full flavored dressing with a nice balance of anchovy and garlic, crisp romain, and good croutons. My partner had the bone in strip steak, temperature on point, and quite good. The straight horseradish was fresh and hot, and the smashed potatoes delicious. As for myself, I ordered the gnocchi in marinara, with the meatballs. The little pillows were perfectly light and airy , but the meatballs seemed beef heavy and dense. I guess I was hoping for a lighter style tri- meat ball. The lemon tart for desert is about the size of a quarter-good- but more like an amuse buche. Cheesecake with a local rhubarb compote was light and tasty- just dont compare it to a true NY slice. Our server was stretched, but competent enough. Look I get that everyone is having issues with staffing post coved but this was ridiculous. My wife's steak was so salty it was practically inedible. It For $50 I'd expect edible at least. The duck Breast was bland. It could have been chicken, could have been anything . The service was slooowwwwwww. Take my word, go down to Winthrop for dinner and get a burger. It will at least be edible. And you won't spend $200 on a dinner for two. If you can't serve a decent dinner because of Covid staffing, don't bother. Just sell burgers at the bar! read more

Mediocre food and service. You get the feeling right away that you can either take your chances here or drive 10 miles into town. We weren't here for a fine dining experience, we had two kids under age 4 that were tired and hungry from the long drive. Service was slow for being at the end of their service hours (checked in at 6:30 and was told the restaurant closes at 8pm). Two restless kids didn't prompt them to move things along so one of us walked kids during the long wait for food and when it took forever to get our bill one of us finally had to just leave the table with the kids to avoid a full meltdown. Not their fault we had restless kids but as a family resort, surely they see a lot of families. Food: again we weren't here for fine dining-a couple burgers, nachos and soup. Beer cheese soup was odd--strange texture and topped with whole peanuts. Nachos had been put under a broiler and were borderline burnt with dried up chili on them, fries looked/tasted like they'd been under A heat lamp forever. Burgers were the only edible thing on the table. Servers in a restaurant should have noticed that a hungry family of 4 barely ate anything on the table; I could have spoken up but restless kids and wanting to make a quick exit took priority. This was motivation enough for us to make the drive into town for breakfast and dinner the following two days/nights, even in snowy/icy conditions. read more

I can only comment on breakfast here, but since it's included in many packages at the otherwise wonderful Sun Mountain Lodge, I think my impressions might be useful. First of all, the view, as others have mentioned, is spectacular. With the sun behind you, lighting up the Methow Valley, the glacially formed landscape is a wonder to behold. Alas, as with so many view restaurants, the management seems to consider a good view enough to justify moderate hotel breakfast prices for what is just OK diner food. With a few exceptions, the ingredients all come from a Sys*o tractor trailer (I saw it unload myself). The first morning I had one of the few exceptions to the above, pancakes with some emmer flour from nearby Bluebird farms, one of the great grain growers in the state. Much to their credit the maple syrup was maple syrup! The second morning I made the mistake of ordering the oatmeal. For $9.00 one might expect tasty steel-cut oats. What you get is a vast bowl of little cardboard-like flakes of "5-minute" oats. They taste like water in which oats have soaked. The teaspoon of local Okanogan Valley Braeburn apple chutney did little more than suggest what the oatmeal could have been, if the cook had put his or her heart into it. What a disappointment! The other breakfast entries included omlets that were ok, toast that was plain, banana bread that could have come from a package. And juice package long ago and far away. read more

We had an early dinner here. The views are amazing. The service was very friendly and prompt. The food was very good, bordering on great. Only a couple of issues. Our steak and pork chop were delicious and generous portions, but both had a lot of fat on them. The other issue we had someone with Celiac Disease at the table. The fries are listed as gluten free, but when we asked about having a gluten free fryer, they said no. That's a big issue for someone on a gluten free diet. So the Sun Mountain Lodge has 2 establishments to eat at if you happen to be there, like I was. The first is the Wolf Creek Bar & Grill. The other and I think better, is simply called the Dining Room. They're both located int he same lodge and are right next to each other. Now the interior of the Dining Room is the same as the Wollf Creek Bar & Grill. It has a very outdoors feel to it and it should it's a lodge. As with it's sister restaurant it offers a spectacular view of the Methow Valley. The Dining Room is definitely more upscale than the Wolf Creek Bar & Grill in terms of table setting and service. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They were also very attentive to our needs and would regularly check-in with my girlfriend and I to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. The Dining Room offers everything from fish to steak on the menu. I however ordered the special which included osso bucco, mushroom strudel, and dessert. I'm pretty sure there was something else included, but I forgot since I was a little delayed in writinng this review. In any case the osso bucco was very good. It was a little too salty, but not so much and that it made eating difficult. The meat was well cooked and easily fell off the bone. The dessert was also equally as delicious. It was a passion fruit mousse. It was creamy and delicious. The dish that stood out the most was the mushroom strudel. Holy cow that was fantastic. It was a flakely buttery pastry on the outside and inside was a flavorful sliced mushrooms in a sauce. It was sooo good. I'd go back just to have that again. In addition my girlfriend got me a cake for my birthday. The cake was a little unexpected so I wasn't prepared for it. Basically I was already sugared out. But I did eat a slice. It was a rich think chocolate cake with a thin fruit layer in the middle. It was welled baked and moist. Overall my experience at the Dining Room was good. If I went back to the Sun Mountain Lodge I would definitely eat there again. read more
