I loved this dinner most of all the places we ate this weekend. The ambiance is tasteful, classic, and a little moody. We sat in the Conservatory and I loved being surrounded by lush foliage and clean black and white stripe decor. On to the food--- This is not a drill. Do not skip the raw oysters. The mignonette - excellent! They were the best of the weekend (and we have had quite a bit) Our server Tiffany was attentive and made excellent suggestions. We ordered crab toast as well and it was very very good. Then followed with a Caesar salad and clam chowder to share. I couldn't decide between little neck clams and the rabbit tagliatelle and she brought the clams as a surprise. They were HANDS DOWN the best I've ever had. She really made my night. The pasta was also incredible. My selections were favorites of the table. A dinner companion ordered a steak but it was a little over cooked but the manager Rory went above and beyond taking care of us. I'm not sure what they do to make the most perfect French fries but hands down I've never had one like this. Figure out a way to order them. The Can't Elope cocktail was the best I had in Newport. It was balanced, refreshing and all around perfection. We also loved the Paper Tiger! Finished with a sticky toffee pudding that was a star of the meal. I wish I wasn't so full or I would have finished it I cannot recommend this restaurant enough 5 stars. read more

The Dining Room at the Vanderbilt Hotel is a perfect place to enjoy a relaxed brunch in Newport. The conservatory room and garden are some of the best spots to sit. The florals and natural light create such a calm and inviting vibe. I would open a few more windows to get some good air breezing through. The brunch menu has some amazing options. You have to try the ricotta pancakes, the smoked salmon benedict, and the avocado toast. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and just the right portion size. The service was friendly and attentive but never over the top. Whether you want a special weekend brunch or just a nice meal with good vibes this place is a great choice. Fresh locally sourced ingredients. We had the breakfast sandwich with sausage, and blueberry pancakes. If you like bacon, add some as a side, it's thick, a little smoky. Yummy iced coffees. They can do a mini salad as a side instead of potatoes. Beautiful ambience. We had breakfast once in the darker dining room or sometimes they can do breakfast in the neat garden house room. Either room is such a nice ambience. Sunday dinner was great as we wanted to try their Sunday Roast (only available on Sundays). I am not a roast fan and loved it and the gravy was sooo good I even googled to see if I could find the recipe. (I didn't). Yummy cocktails with neat twists but the spicy pineapple drink was my fave. Disclaimer - we came just for drinks so I cannot comment on the food. We were excited to check out the Vanderbilt during Christmas time and loved the opportunity to grab a drink here. Once we arrived we were abruptly stopped by the hostess who would not let us enter the bar because it was "at capacity". Apparently they do not allow for standing room at their bar (weird but ok!) and we were then rudely told that it would "be a while" from the hostess who seemed to be more stressed than the President of the US. After telling her we would wait a few and being told "it will be more than a few", we were then seated (we likely waited about 10-15 minutes). Upon being seated, there were multiple 2-some tables in the bar available that (if we had been asked) we would have shared we only had time for 1 drink before dinner elsewhere. Once seated, we ordered our drinks. One Yuzu Gin drink that was good, it smelled delicious (I'm a non Gin drinker so no comment on the flavor) and the other being an extremely sub par espresso martini. To be honest, I've had better ones from dive bars that I think are more likely to spit in my drink than a boujee bar serving $22 martinis. Sadly one of my worst experiences ever. The hostess were extremely rude and asked us to seat in the reception area while they looked for a table. 1hr later, everyone was seated other than us. When we asked the hostess about our long wait, she rudely told us that a few people had cut the line and sat in our place. We opted to leave as we were clearly not wanted in this restaurant. I ordered the ricotta gnocchi. The sauce was rich and unfortunately the gnocchi was pillow soft. The whole dish felt overly heavy and mushy. I a little sauce would pair better with the soft gnocchi- perhaps even a pumpkin or squash OR the gnocchi should have been much hardier / al dente to stand up to the rich sauce. The highlight for me was the clam chowder. It was not traditional but it was beyond amazing: well seasoned, perfect consistency. I could taste every single ingredient and loved it so much I could have just had that with the bread. I tried several clam chowders after this one and they all seemed like a bowl of cream with potatoes and clams after this amazing dish. Very well done! read more

My wife and I have been meaning to try out the Vanderbilt dining room and had wanted to visit during restaurant week but finally got around to visiting Saturday evening and it did NOT disappoint! My wife had the organic chicken and I had the duck breast, our waitress Sara was very lovely very attentive and answered all of our questions ( we had many) without hesitation. The host was kind and accommodating as well and made us feel welcome. This place is an absolute hidden gem. The fire really gives a romantic feel and every plate served was excellent. read more

The service is not friendly, and each time there was no hostess, so someone else sat us- which caused confusion for the staff, as no server seemed to know we were there. The wait times were absurdly long, more so during our second visit. We waited an hour before our appetizers arrived, and another hour for our dinner to arrive. The food arrived disappointedly cold. No one ate their meals. The appetizers were good, and what little we tasted of the dinner was bland- especially the burger. The staff showed little concern for our dissatisfaction. I have eaten at the restaurant at the Vanderbilt over the last 15 years. I've seen it gone through all its different ownership. Generally, the menu was with usually good food except for one time several years ago, where the food was terrible eaten there twice in the last two weeks. Two weeks ago the pork chop was excellent. Last night, the special which was a sliced filet was barely above average. The food rather steak was old and and when defrosted had lost flavor. The current waiter staff seems to be mostly kids from the local college. Certainly not the elegant boutique exotic image they present on the website. Would consider other places first.This one a crapshoot. The hotel restaurant and decor was never as good as it was when I first started going there 15 years ago it has generally been unable to match those great days of luxurious warm decor, good service with professional waiters. read more

First time we have ever been to The Vanderbilt. We came to celebrate our Anniversary. The dining room was beautiful, quite (though we found out that we where there before the dinner rush) and comfortable. Where we sat was liking at a beautiful bar area. The food was good, small menu, and the drinks where unique. One of the staff was nice enough to let us know about the rooftop bar. That was the highlight of the evening. The views are beautiful! The service here was ridiculous- they moved our table to a better spot - we were happy were we where but when a corner booth opened up they asked if we wanted to move to a nicer seat! Inspired to dine at The Vanderbilt as a conclusion to our book club read this month, this hotel and restaurant deserves nothing less than five stars. Upon walking into the Vanderbilt, I feel like I'm transported in history to the early 1900's. We were seated in a sitting room, where we could read the history of why it was built. We ordered off of the small bites menu and everything was incredible. From the appetizer spoon, to the most perfectly cooked cheeseburger with the side salad, to a perfectly frothed cappuccino and a delectable caramel molten cake for dessert, I truly felt like I was dining like a Vanderbilt. The food has to be the best I've had in Newport as of date. After dining, we were given a small tour of special areas in the building lead by the very knowledgeable Zachary. He truly made our experience memorable in going the extra mile explaining the history of the building itself, even prior to the Vanderbilt's owning it. MY wife and I went here for the first time to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We had a fabulous time. The staff were attentive but not overly so. Our waiter made us feel at home and made us laugh a lot. Food was fabulous and not as expensive as I perceived it would be. Downsides 1. Check in was not so good. No onsite parking and no real direction from anyone to tell you where to go if you are only eating there. This is the first point of contact that a new customer sees and it needs some work. I really felt that if you were there for dining only, you were not as valued as a guest of the hotel. 2. Drinks were also first rate BUT the drinks were expensive. Most cocktails were $20 or more. We had a great experience here. There was a warm welcome from the hostess and manager upon arrival. We sat in the lounge and were attended to right away to have a drink and wait for our table to be ready. The drinks are amazing and the bartender visited us and recreated a favorite drink that wasn't on the menu to perfection. The food was delicious but I'm going back for the amazing service, moody atmosphere, and drinks! I can't wait to experience this place in the summer. My husband, our son and I had reservations for afternoon tea, when we arrived the hostess was nowhere to be found, so the bartender sat us. Once the hostess showed back up maybe 10 minutes later we could hear her giving the bartender a hard time for stepping up to the plate in her absence. From there it took over 20 minutes to get water and menus these came from a waiter serving another section that noticed we were being ignored. From there the service was pretty slow and inattentive. The tea itself was okay but not the best in the Newport area. Overall what should have been a nice day around the holidays turned it's a disappointment. read more

My wife and I visited The Vanderbilt Grille for our 10th wedding anniversary, just before the world came to a halt in March. We've been to the rooftop bar many times before and love the building. If you haven't been, the building is a boutique hotel. The bar is a hidden gem, and it boasts a view of Newport Harbor. When we arrived, two friendly hotel staff immediately welcomed us. We actually wanted to go up the bar to see the harbor at sunset, but it was closed. They suggested we enjoy the fireplace and offered to bring drinks over. It was a charming sitting area and featured the makings of s'mores, which we eyed for after dinner. After proceeding to the restaurant, we had plenty of privacy in the dining area, which was quiet, particularly early in the evening. The Vanderbuilt's menu is diverse, but not expansive. We chose the "wine and dine" three-course special menu. We each had a amazing soup of the day, in this case a carrot basil soup. It was fresh, light and flavorful. We also shared crispy brussels sprouts with pomegranate seeds, which were fantastic. For dinner, my wife chose the salmon, which was served with spiced braised lentils, carrot, mint and lemon yogurt. It was done perfectly and nicely presented. I had the mushroom risotto with winter truffles and shaved parmesan. It too was delicious. For dessert, we both chose the skillet s'mores (something we'd usually share). It was awesome and featured brownies, vanilla ice cream, honey marshmallow, salted caramel and chocolate sauce. I planned my sisters bachelorette a few months in advance and landed on here for a dinner Friday night. I worked with Jared and Sarah etc to make the reservation and followed up with them about what menu would be available. Compared to the other restaurant I was dealing with, Vanderbilt was a breeze in comparison. The plan was to have dinner on the rooftop, but maybe the conservatory or garden area as backups. Fast forward to the DAY OF, a few hours before our reservation, and I get a call from Sarah cancelling our din reservation for 11 girls due to emergency construction on the rooftop... not only had I planned this din a few months out, but where was I going to get a last min res for such a large group?!! She mentioned she tried a few places and they couldn't take us so sorry- cue a huge anxiety attack- thanks. Called them back and insisted we can dine in the garden which was a backup plan, and she was like oh ok that works! But why panic me beforehand then? The garden actually turned out just fine, besides another surprise- totally diff menu than what I was sent prior.. but we were outdoors, near heat lamps, and it seemed semi private, and right by the pool. Service was pretty weak.. we were waiting for quite a bit and I had to reorder my drink quite a few times (don't want to know if I was charged for extra drinks as a result). One redeeming thing was the waitress gave us a dessert for the bride-to-be. I really wanted to experience the rooftop but will not be returning after this debacle if I'm in Newport again. read more

Unfortunately I wasn't able to enjoy the menu I've attached pictures of so I can't speak to it. We arrived on a rainy and cold off-season Tuesday and were led back to the four season porch. We literally had the place to ourselves. I love off-season travel... We fully expected to have to remind the server about the food restrictions but there was no need, when we spoke up he said that a separate tea service was already being prepared! I chose the rooibos and hubby chose the Darjeeling but they graciously served the themed tea alongside our choices and I'm so glad they did, I preferred that to my pick. Soft jazz playing in the background, delectable tea sandwiches, electric blue tea in dainty cups, and no other company save for my lovely spouse. A girl couldn't ask for more. read more

"My Fair Lady: The Musical" is QUAKING at the amazing afternoon tea at the Vanderbilt! We had a "loverly" time attending today at a tea that would make Victorian London society proud! Before we even sit down to discuss the fabulousness that is the tea itself, we gotta talk about the restaurant. Situated primly inside the Vanderbilt Hotel, a building that dates back to 1909 (!!!), is the Vanderbilt Grill, the full service restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch, afternoon high tea, and dinner to sophisticated guests and locals who are in the know about this unique, hidden spot. Yes, that's right! You don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a room to eat here. In fact, the afternoon tea packages are some of the best deals in town! The non-alcoholic package, which we ordered, is $19 per person, and includes a pot of artisanal tea for each guest, plus a delish selection of sweets and savories. For $30, you can upgrade to enjoy your choice of a mimosa, bellini, or sparkling wine along with a couple of next-level treats, like hand dipped chocolate covered strawberries! Compared to the prices at some of the fancy New York or even Providence hotel teas, this is cheap! But the quality sure isn't! Tea is served daily from 12-3 PM either in the Conservatory Room, which has a wall of glass windows that overlook the secluded garden patio outside, or in the garden (weather permitting), where you can sip tea surrounded by a tranquil fountain and a multitude of flowering plants. Both spots are absolutely gorgeous, as is the entire hotel, and no matter where you go, be sure to have your camera ready for the Instagram-friendly surroundings! As for the tea, even though we went with the simpler of the two package offerings, it surely didn't skimp on quality or quantity of what was presented! After sitting down, we were presented a darling wooden box filled with loose leaf teas that we could choose from for our personal teapot. I went with the fruity Mountain Berry tea, but all of them looked tempting. The teas are from the Tealeaves brand, and being the tea geek that I am, I've already investigated their website for future purchases! I loved how the tea was brought to the table piping hot and steeped to the correct amount. Nothing can ruin a tea party more than leaving your tea leaves or bag in the pot for too long and having a bitter or sour cup of tea. Not so at the Vanderbilt - my tea was perfect, with the bold flavors of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries in each comforting sip. The culinary offerings were a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Snacky things were presented beautifully on a three-tiered tray, each layer more tantalizing than the last! Even though the sweet and savory treats were mostly petit-four size, I found them to be filling and fresh. The scones were light and fluffy, served with double cream (the heavenly intersection of butter and whipped cream - thanks, Brits!) and house made raspberry jam that had pleasing notes of citrus to jazz up the spread. Layer two brought more sweetness in the form of fudgy chocolate cake, mini oatmeal raisin cookies, and lemon-strawberry tarts, which were a welcome refreshment on a hot August afternoon. Finally, the savory layer (which was my favorite) featured cucumber, cream cheese, and smoked salmon tea sandwiches and the best lobster salad tartlets I've EVER had. I don't even like lobster salad, and here I was, shoveling them in like there was no tomorrow. It was very pre-Higgins Eliza Doolittle, but I don't care! I can't believe I've lived on the island for this long and have never attended high tea at the Vanderbilt. It's a super fun, affordable, and adorable way to spend a special afternoon with friends (or just yourself!), and you shouldn't miss it if you're in Newport! read more

The night started out with parking; I pulled up to the front, and it said valet was included for guests... no one was outside. It wasn't till 20 minutes after the fact of me circling around the area looking for public parking that we called and someone finally came outside. Once we were seated it was totally not what we expected from the pictures. We were sat on the patio in wicker chairs with horrible lighting. Uncomfortable lawn chairs, and the only lights in the room were 4 lamps, one in each corner of the room. We sat against the wall right next to the fire alarm. Service, was lackluster. Waitress never lit our candles or any candles for that matter. Food, was alright but most definitely not worth the money. Three course meal was $95 dollars, a small soup and lobster tail and a small dessert. The lobster tail was intact so small that it could've been mistaken for a jumbo shrimp, and was not excellent tasting by any means. In summary, between my wife and I our total was $260... I'm not going to tell you how to spend your money but I do not recommend spending $95 per person to eat a shrimp sized lobster tail in the dark in a wicker patio chair. read more
