Horrible treatment and experience. As a Newport local, I came in last night with my service animal as I often do. A female server came over and told me I could not sit in the bar high top area with my dog. I informed her that I could sit anywhere with my service animal. She said since it was a high traffic area she could move us to a table in the back of the restaurant so he would not get stepped on. I went to the table in the back and waited for my sister to get us a drink. My sister informed me that the bartender, Garrett, told her that my dog is not welcome there. My sister told him it was my service animal and he said service dogs are not allowed after 9pm. She told him he is allowed any time as he is a working service animal. He said it was irresponsible to have my dog at a restaurant and he would not be serving us. I flagged the server over that sat me and informed her what happened. She told us we had to leave and would not be served. I calmly asked why and said they were discriminating against me and she said to go outside and call the police as they would not be serving us because we were yelling at them. No one was yelling as we were calmly trying to explain the situation and how it was illegal. She repeatedly yelled "get out" in our faces. I left after that as I was extremely embarrassed at the treatment. Based on other reviews, it seems mistreatment is a common theme. As someone who relies on their service animal, it's extremely unsettling for a business to not be educated on the laws. I will be filing a complaint with the ada and pursuing this further. read more

It's a fine spot to grab a beer and watch a game, but the food is not very good. I ordered a donelly, and the grilled chicken was some of the toughest chicken I've ever had. Probably a fun spot for a drink with friends, but don't go for the food! read more

Drinks were cheap and decent. Got a mule but it didn't come in the mule cup which I was disappointed. Large bar and large indoor seating. Some outdoor seating as well. We didn't get any food but the menu looked okay. Bar tenders were nice. You could probably get a seat here anytime and fit a large party since it wasn't that busy. While spending our Sunday in downtown Newport, we decided to stop here for lunch. Staff was very nice and seated us right away. Definitely the place if you're into sports, since basketball and baseball were on the TVs! My friends both ordered the black bean burger while I ordered the turkey burger with a side salad. First off, I'd like to give a huge shout out to Josh, the bartender who absolutely made this impromptu experience the best. He was friendly, attentive and hilarious...just the kind of guy you want behind the bar. Recently when in with a friend, having 1 beer completely sober! And could not even finish it, the man with the hat and glasses behind the bar decided to harass us at the front as we were having a personal conversation. He yelled and looked heavily intoxicated, he proceeded around the bar, and slapped me in the face in front of my friend and told me to get "f" out for no apparent reason. When my friend was grabbing my stuff, (who was a girl) and asked for a reason, he simply replied I can do whatever I want- and just talked about how he was making Jameson shots before leaving. After enjoying cocktails at two locations with million dollar views (and prices), we chose Speakeasy Bar and Grill anticipating great food, prices, and atmosphere. We were not disappointed! I started off with a Margarita made with Patron. It was served in a nice pint glass and a bargain at $10.00!! Since we were there during their Happy Hour, we were excited to know all appetizers were $10.00, which we took full advantage of. Everything was fabulous and flavorful from the mussels, Mac n cheese, and soft tacos, to the huge crab cake and lobster pizza!! Rachael was tending bar and she was very friendly and accommodating. If you're going to Newport, you must definitely make it a point to visit this establishment. It's so refreshing to know you can be in one of the biggest tourist areas and still have a great time without breaking bank! P. S. Bar started out strong... but older male bartender made it an unbearable experience. He repeatedly interrupted conversations, made inappropriate comments, and even bragged about growing marijuana. Needs to be fired, especially when other bartender had to apologize on his behalf. She said "I'm sorry he gets this way when he drinks". I came to this bar on a Saturday night to eat, drink and watch college football....the experience was appalling. My group was harassed the entire time by a group of 5. They would bounce group to group, bothering everyone, stealing drinks, and antagonizing men. This went on the entire time I was at Speakeasy and not one of the workers did anything about it. I did not stay long enough to find out, but I would not be surprised if a bar fight broke out in or around Speakeasy due to that behavior being allowed for hours. I'm from a small town where the above happens all of the time, and all of the bars feel like a scene out of the old movie "Road House." If you like this vibe, I'd recommend speakeasy. If you do not, throw a rock in any direction of speakeasy and you'll find a better restaurant and have a better experience. To add, I've been to places in TX, GA, NY, FL, CA, LA, NC where at little bit of conflict is worth the food. This place is not that good. If they aren't bringing good vibes and atmosphere, it's a complete waste of time and money. read more

No one was underage and no one was intoxicated. Bartender took the drivers license and said it was fake. Seriously? Did you see the hologram? Did you check the MVD? Based on what? As my daughter and her friends were leaving the bouncer pushed her boyfriend so hard that he had cuts and scrapes on his face. Many people witnessed this altercation and were upset. Resulting in a fight breaking out with other patrons at the bar. Not her boyfriend. Her group had left at this point! The whole bar erupted into a fight. If this is your idea of fun on a Saturday night, think again. This establishment should be under legal investigation considering the number of negative reviews about the owner and their pathetic attempts to run a business. Shameful. Disgusting. read more

Zero stars! We were looking for a place to eat, and while we were trying to figure it out, our 2 year-old, (who is potty training), desperately needed to pee. The bartender and the hostess refused to allow us to use the bathroom. They allowed my innocent child to pee his pants in front of the restaurant. Pretty easy choice where NOT to eat dinner after that. After we got him cleaned up and changed, I went back to speak to the owner about their practices, and the horrible bartender wouldn't even let me speak to her and threatened to call the police on me Because I wasn't a paying customer. You can tell a lot about a business by the people that they hire. Avoid at all costs. Spend your money on businesses who care about the community, and people. These people are heartless. read more

For me, this was the best dinner I had during our week long vacation in Newport (don't get me wrong, I ate LOTS of great food, this just happened to be my favorite). The service was great, and the bar was pretty busy for a middle of the week night. I started with the shrimp scampi (someone has a pic of that) and hubby got the clam chowder. Both were very fresh and the chowder had loads of clams. Hubby got the surf & turf which he really enjoyed. The chart topping dish for me was the lobster gnocchi, do not pass this up! Two whole lobster tails, tender gnocchi and a very nice sauce with cherry tomatoes and mushrooms. Lots of lobster and I ate every bite! I'll be back next time I'm in Newport for sure. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. The sad part of this review is I am a local resident. It started with the hostess when my party arrived Saturday night 7pm ish (it was busy) and we asked how long would it be for a table of 5 and her response was I have no idea, we should have made a reservation with an attitude. Stunned, we still decided to wait for a table. We ordered a drinks at the bar and we waited approx. 45 min when my friend politely asked the hostess do you have any idea of how much longer the wait will be? She rudely say NO and walked away. So we all just laughed and still choose to stay. Finally around 8:40 we get seated at the most dirty table ever, so we asked if we could have it wiped down and we got an attitude with an eye roll. We order food and drinks and when the food came out it was ice cold, mind you now it's about 9:30pm we are all starving! I don't say anything but my friends is so bad he asked if they would just take it back and take it off the bill. They insisted they bring him another dish but he didn't want one, just wanted it off the bill. Long story short, food was horrible, service (hostess) was terrible, not the waitress she was nice, drinks were mediocre and come to find out the hostess was the owner of the place!!!!! Brief Line Up Front: Came here for Restaurant Week dinner ($35 for 3 courses) and was blown away. You get to order any appetizer from the full menu and any entree, with a choice of desert. The food is really good and the portions are huge... Its a really popular bar/restaurant, so try grab a table in the back if you want to hear each other talk. Wife and I came in and we were greeted and treated really well by the entire wait staff. The music was all nostalgic 90's rock and country. This place has a feel of being a college bar from the late 90's/early 00's with more space for the guys who are now in their 30's-40's. I really enjoyed it. Wife ordered the Stuffie which is mixed with a spicy sausage in the stuffing. I really like it since I like spicy dishes, wife put it as her 3rd favorite in RI, for me it was in my top 2. Sometimes these things are dry husks of stuffing and clam, this one is nice, juicy, and spicy... I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Nachos and was overwhelmed... The thing was bigger than my head, layer of chips with layers of chicken and cheese throughout. Usually, places only put a little bit of topping on the top so by the time you get half way through you are dealing with only tortilla chips... That is not a problem here, you get a ton of cheese, so by the end you have a nice mess of cheese/sour cream and all the other goodness looking at you, not sad plain chips... Wife got the Doria which is really rare to find in the US. Its a rice dish that is topped with meat (in this case a ton of seafood) and a cheese sauce. The amount of mussels, shrimp, etc. on it completely hid the rice on the bottom. My wife was initially sad because there was no rice, until she dug through the mountain of seafood, then she was excited. Great dish. Thankfully, I only got a burger. After the Nachos, I was about to die... The hamburger is a nice grilled monster. I will definitely be back here again, the service, food, and atmosphere are perfect. read more
