Hands down the best place in Montauk!! Great vibes in here with the nautical-dive-bar decor and bluesy music playing. We also had the wings whcich were crispy, lightly sauced and served with what my fiancé called "the best f'n blue cheese ever created" so you can take her word on that one. I also had the homemade mozzarella sticks which were fantastic but the marinara sauce just wasn't up to the standard of the sticks. The outside seating areas were also key for our smoke breaks. Chairs, tables, benches, logs, spools and rocks can be used as a perch to light up and enjoy the night from. Each area has a little joke or funny sign installed by the owners or left behind from a loyal patron. We will be back!!! read more

Please avoid this place at all cost. I know they are going with the disgruntled bar scene but please don't support this business. First of all they don't allow dogs at all. At all. If you're blind and need a service animal you are out of luck. Honestly I don't even think that is legal. I can understand if dogs aren't permitted inside but they aren't even permitted outside. I don't want to support a business with mediocre food that are anti-dogs. Also, even when we asked to take out food they basically denied us saying it will take too long and telling us to go elsewhere... what kind of business shoo patrons away? The Dock is owned by George Watson who has spent his the last 30 years turning his restaurant into an amazing seafood spot. The soups are tremendous and so are the clams, mussels and lobster. The restaurant is located on a commercial fishing dock which is also cool. I had dinner with my wife here last week and the waiter gave us a free drink because we eat there so often. I don't get it. I really wanted to like this place. I saw it on that Hipster travel show featuring the wanna-be Anthony Bourdaine that lasted a season on the Esquire Network. I researched my Montauk restaurants looking for the place that would probably get me the freshest fish and diviest bar type experience. This place is like a cross between a Walt Disney World Restaurant, a Dick's Last Resort and a dive bar. The guy next to me at the bar said it reminded him of The Jekyl and Hyde Restaurant in New York City. (he meant it in a good way, I would say it was a bad thing.) Personally, the vibe I got from this place is "TRYING TOO HARD'. From the mannequin torsos with painted nipples outside the bar to the weird signs everywhere with cutesy sayings ... it just seemed like someone raided a Spencer Gifts store at the mall and created a bar. From the tounge in cheek bucket labeled 'used syringes' to the several signs promoting no cell phone usage ... this place is filled with ironic signs featuring snappy sayings. There are wooden Tahitian wooden masks, old whaling memorobilia, 1920s portaits of boxers fighting, even taxidermy animal heads everywhere. It's like everywhere you look there is ironic humor. The food SUCKED on the day I went. It beyond SUCKED. I ordered a soft shell crab sandwich which came burned to a crisp. The coating was quite literally black on one side and dark brown on the other. It tasted like scorched cooking oil. It was served on a raw, uncooked English Muffin. Not even a thick Trader Joe's English muffin ... a small blah supermarket generic brand English Muffin. The crab was much smaller than any other softshell crab I've had. (we are taking like 5 bites small) The sandwich was almost inedible. It tasted burned and yucky. For $17 it came a la carte ... fries would have been an extra $5. I ordered a $6 mug of the red clam chowder. It was full of clams but beyond that, tasted like Campbells vegetable soup. The vibe here is 'local dive hangout' but I've been to some of the best dive bars in the United States and this place seemed to clean and organized to be a true dive bar. It seemed like a bar that was TRYING to be a dive bar.. Everything was placed perfectly ... nothing was just thrown into the mix. Even the bizarre mix of chotchkis seemed too perfectly laid out. It was if an interior decorator re-created an organized dive bar. It almost felt corporate as if it could be the bar in a hotel lobby or a chain. It seems to be marketed as a bar for local salty fishermen who will tolerate outsides as long as they aren't assholes. That is what sucked me in. I figured if local fishermen ate here the food must be good. And if assholes were not allowed in, the atmosphere would be good too. The people in the bar seemed like a mix of local business people in shirts and ties, locals stopping in for a burger and a beer and tourists who were there because they read a news story or newspaper review. The saving grace here was the dessert. As other reviewers said ... the chocolate peanut butter pie is worth the splurge. Sure, it's $9 per slice ... but it was the best part of the meal other than the capable service of the bartender/waitress. The service was so perfect. The kitchen was so not. I don't complain about prices when the food is good and fresh. But for a burned sandwich with no side, $17 is inexcusable. Montauk's restaurants are pretty overpriced to begin with but usually you can at least count on fresh seafood cooked well. The menu also is very limited. I felt like it was pretentious and wanted more comfort staples such as fish and chips ... or a simple fried fish sandwich ... fried clams ... everything seemed too complicated for this type of bar. Maybe I came on a bad day ... maybe the chef called out sick ... maybe they were using a new piece of equipment in the kitchen. This place has some pretty good reviews, so my experience which was the complete opposite of good can't be the norm, can it? At the prices they charge, I can't risk trying this restaurant again to see. I am sure they will chalk this review up to another 'asshole tourist... but when I drop $100 on a meal for two that includes only 2 drinks ... the food better be at least decent. I am sticking to the Shagwong in the future when in Montauk. read more

Went back here for the first time in years and am happy to report that the Hipster migration which has sprawled out from the Hamptons is not present or welcome here. Devil Dog George is at the helm, salty and fun, just like the locals who frequent the place. If you walk in without an attitude, you are welcome. The drinks are inexpensive, the food is a delight! Due to a strict (enforced by loudspeaker) no cell phone rule, I have no photos of the incredible Manhattan clam chowder or 1/2 dozen off the boat clams on the half shell. My guy loved the scallop special with farm fresh asparagus. The linguine with fresh clams is outstanding. Basically, if you're not an uppity jackass, you will enjoy The Dock. Old school, unpretentious Montauk, as it was in the beginning and ever SHOULD be. read more

Great experience @ The Dock! We passed by and decided to get some food there. The exterior is intriguing - a conglomeration of items like an old bicycle, a wheel chair and a punching bag, combined with several signs that relay the house rules: no screaming kids, no dirt bigs etc. ;-) Inside, the bar has true pub feeling, with a lot of dark wood and a long bar, surrounded by tables. It is clear immediately that this is the local fisherman haunt, with them and the locals in general coming to savor the beer selection and the daily menu. They have an amazing clam chowder, mussels and comfort food such as the tuna melt, which was delicious. I don't remember the kind of beer that I had but I would go back for that only.. not to forget the amazing apple crumble - I do not remember how I got up as I was so full I couldn't move. Local flavor! My husband's friends who used to live in Montauk took us to The Dock. Seeing the weird decor and some tatooed tough guys who seem to be their usual customers drinking beer outside made me motivated enough to try out this local spot. I tried their raw clams and soft shell crab sandwich. I like the sandwich especially. It came with English muffin, which is unique, that actually goes well with the crab. Unbelievably amazing seafood. Extremely fresh, as if it was just caught and brought to the table! Stopped in Sunday evening right as dinner was about to begin (5pm) and got a seat immediately. The staff is attentive, polite and a pleasure to be around. The drinks were also great - the hot cider with rum, vodka with fresh squeezed lemonade (not overly sweet!) and rose in a can! Service was efficient and friendly. They have at least 5 outdoor tables and the place is pretty popular so make sure you get here early! read more

Solid little joint in Montauk. Yelp page incorrectly states they do not accept credit card, which left me in a momentary panic when my boyfriend and I realized our Montauk-cash-only stash was on the low end for the $14-ish mains. I really wanted the soft shell crab sandwich, and once our waitress confirmed they accept all cards but AmEx, my ass went bananas ordering the sandwich, a cup of soup and a soda - baller! Just kidding, but all were delicious. The dude ordered a fishwich with fries. Both sandwiches served on perfect little English muffins. Fries are extra, but only one person really needs to order them. The clam chowder here is red, fine by me, and chock full of chewy clams and served in a mug. Solid. Someone else wrote that this place has a pub/pirate ship kind of feel, and I'd agree with that. Despite the matchbooks and signage and t-shirts stating no crying kids and "take screaming children outside," we sat across from a family with a baby that cried almost the entire time they were seated. Luckily they left before we did, but I was kind of hoping there would be a "DID YOU SEE THE NO CRYING BABIES SIGN?" type moment. Alas. I can only dream. read more

If you ever find yourself in Montauk, you've got to check out The Dock for some fresh and yummy seafood: My two friends and I started with the bacon-wrapped scallops: the scallops were delicious and cooked perfectly. They arrived covered in BBQ sauce which I thought was bizzarre, but the flavors actually work. We got a generous 6 scallops in our order.! Although the special menu presents the scallops as a dinner, you can also request without the sides as an appetizer. I also started with a cup of clam chowder (literally served in a cup/mug!) I was expecting New England clam chowder, so I was surprised when a cup of red soup was placed in front of me! Overall a good cup of chowder that was not overly salty (the first time I tasted Manhattan clam chowder). I ordered the tuna melt: the tuna was served medium-rare and was very moist. It was served on an English muffin instead of toast. Overall good, but not amazing. What WAS amazing however was my friend's order of mussels. A very generous bowl of mussels served with garlic and butter. OMG we went through three baskets of bread because the broth at the bottom was so delicious!!! Be sure to order the mussels and soak up all the yummy goodness with the warm bread that they give you! BE SURE to save room for dessert! The house-made peanut butter and chocolate pie was AMAZING! At $8 / slice it's a tad pricey, but TOTALLY worth it. The peanut butter filling is very light but amazingly delicious. It was even better with the chocolate topping and chocolate-tipped crust. DO NOT pass on DESSERT and be sure to get the peanut butter chocolate pie! Super, super friendly service. The Dock is a local's joint and is one of the few lively places open before high season. The restaurant has an old pub/pirate ship feel. If the atmosphere does not entertain, I am sure the locals will. I highly recommend the Manhattan clam chowder and fish of the day. The specials of the day are the most popular and first to run out. As for the dessert, The Dock fell short in that area. I ordered the chocolate cake and it was sub par. Enjoy! read more

I came here last evening with a group of friends. We got in just before the kitchen shut. I ordered a salad with a croquette filled with cream cheese. It was pretty good. They were a bit stingy with the dressing, but I could have asked for more and didn't. It was just that sort of night with everyone around you talking, so I wasn't really concentrating on my salad. Plus, when I broke up the croquette and mixed that around, it made a so-so salad pretty good. What got them points? Our waitress was a really nice lady. I didn't catch her name, but we rushed in knowing we only had a few more minutes to order. She was good at putting us at ease and letting us know we had time to look over the menu. It also probably helped as we were the second wave as a group was already there and their orders were already being prepared. I ordered chicken wings to go. They were great! I just had a few tonight and the blue cheese dressing they packed with them is substantial: real chunks of blue cheese and hearty. It wasn't thin or lacking in flavor. The wings also were very good. I only ate half, so I'll be going back for seconds later. I'd recommend this place. It's not a place to go if you're in a foodie mood and want intricate dishes to discuss. If you have kids, do not go here unless you have complete control of your child's child crying. My 18month old began to cry and a waiter (not ours) with brown Curly hair shot me a dirty look and shook his head. My toddler wasn't even crying for more than 10 seconds before we took him out. It's no longer enough for a place to be "gritty," or "unique." Nope. For a place to gain purchase with the cognoscenti, it has to be functionally identical to their home base. I'd think most people would come to Montauk precisely not to stay in the "funky" reclaimed "motor lodge" they also stayed in when they visited Portland, OR. But I'm wrong. Always wrong. Just read the NYT Travel section "36 Hours In" column if you need to be convinced that most travelers seek nothing more than the familiar comfort of home. Is there a place to go listen to acoustic noodling or poetry while getting roaringly drunk on mincemeat cocktails? No? Is there a place to go in the morning to shop for lovingly handcrafted espadrilles? No? Then why bother? So when I say The Dock is a nice local spot, I mean it as a high compliment. Not racing to install Edison bulbs or salvaged decor. Not succumbing to the precious, moralistic conceit of a "unique," "sustainable," "creative" menu that's nothing but. I wandered into this place for some clams and a cold beer and I was astounded that there were a lot of drunks there. I mean, a ton. There were drunken Italians, sloshed Poles, leg less English folks, and it was all so crass and low brow. I couldn't put my finger on what, exactly was wrong, but then I realized what was missing was the sweet lilt of an Irish Brogue. No class in the place at all, very common and ordinary. Upon leaving I noticed the signage....ll.l "No Drunken Irish". Why would any place, in New York no less, intentionally lower the quality of its clientele. While scrolling through the reviews I was aghast when I came across the individual who gave this place one star. I never comment on other reviews, but I can't resist this time. Who the heck brings their own coffee into a restaurant and expects a welcoming staff!? Enough said, on to the review. The Dock is virtually unchanged in decor, vibe, food and service for a looong time. This is a place for adults and well-behaved children, but it's really for adults in my opinion. The rules are very clear and posted on the exterior of the establishment, every bar coaster and every t-shirt worn by the staff. No screaming kids, no skells, no cell phones, no whiners. Learn it, know it, live it. When going here, except for clothing, prepare as you would for a day in court. Leave the kids home and turn your phone off or put on vibrate. Once that's taken care of, kick back, relax and enjoy killer food, great STRONG drinks (best bloody mary in Montauk) without being in a sea of folks pecking away at their phones. If you need to take or make a call, just go outside but this refuge is really for those who can divest themselves of such hindrances and annoyances. Fancy (ie. any) electronics are out of place here.
