If you have kids, do not go here unless you have complete control of your child's child crying. My 18month old began to cry and a waiter (not ours) with brown Curly hair shot me a dirty look and shook his head. My toddler wasn't even crying for more than 10 seconds before we took him out. It's no longer enough for a place to be "gritty," or "unique." Nope. For a place to gain purchase with the cognoscenti, it has to be functionally identical to their home base. I'd think most people would come to Montauk precisely not to stay in the "funky" reclaimed "motor lodge" they also stayed in when they visited Portland, OR. But I'm wrong. Always wrong. Just read the NYT Travel section "36 Hours In" column if you need to be convinced that most travelers seek nothing more than the familiar comfort of home. Is there a place to go listen to acoustic noodling or poetry while getting roaringly drunk on mincemeat cocktails? No? Is there a place to go in the morning to shop for lovingly handcrafted espadrilles? No? Then why bother? So when I say The Dock is a nice local spot, I mean it as a high compliment. I wandered into this place for some clams and a cold beer and I was astounded that there were a lot of drunks there. I mean, a ton. There were drunken Italians, sloshed Poles, leg less English folks, and it was all so crass and low brow. I couldn't put my finger on what, exactly was wrong, but then I realized what was missing was the sweet lilt of an Irish Brogue. No class in the place at all, very common and ordinary. Upon leaving I noticed the signage....ll.l "No Drunken Irish". Why would any place, in New York no less, intentionally lower the quality of its clientele. While scrolling through the reviews I was aghast when I came across the individual who gave this place one star. I never comment on other reviews, but I can't resist this time. Who the heck brings their own coffee into a restaurant and expects a welcoming staff!? Enough said, on to the review. The Dock is virtually unchanged in decor, vibe, food and service for a looong time. This is a place for adults and well-behaved children, but it's really for adults in my opinion. The rules are very clear and posted on the exterior of the establishment, every bar coaster and every t-shirt worn by the staff. No screaming kids, no skells, no cell phones, no whiners. Learn it, know it, live it. When going here, except for clothing, prepare as you would for a day in court. Leave the kids home and turn your phone off or put on vibrate. Once that's taken care of, kick back, relax and enjoy killer food, great STRONG drinks (best bloody mary in Montauk) without being in a sea of folks pecking away at their phones. If you need to take or make a call, just go outside but this refuge is really for those who can divest themselves of such hindrances and annoyances. Fancy (ie. any) electronics are out of place here. She is so bright a cheerful and def is lying about her age! It has a very biker feel with exceptional service. The signs and posters are hysterical! Right near the fish docks. I am thoroughly impressed with The Dock & it's eclectic decor & cool vibe/attitude. They don't appreciate cell phone usage & I have to admit I think that's awesome. The food is truly the star of this Montauk spot & each thing we ate we were highly impressed...so much that we still are bickering at what was better out of what we ate. We started off with a bowl of New England Clam Chowder & it was seriously one of the best I ever had. Then, we shared the soft shell crab sandwich & the lobster blt sandwich & both were outrageous. The soft shell crab was fried to perfection, crispy & not greasy whatsoever. They serve it on an English muffin with awesome tartar sauce on the side. The lobster blt was on a great roll & the lobster was so fresh & perfectly chilled for a sandwich...not too cold, just right. The bacon was really good & the fries are clearly made in house & were also great & not overly salty which I can really appreciate. The best seafood I have ever had, if you don't come here you are a fool! My friend who lives in Montauk took me here; at first the sign "no cell phones" on the door and the shack appearance made me wonder. The menu is one page, nothing fancy or intimidating about this little secret. I ordered off the daily catch menu, it's written on a chalkboard and based on what the ocean gave up. My scallops with asparagus and potatoes were the most phenomenal things I have ever eaten. The only problem is that no scallops will ever compare. I kept eating after I was full because I refused to leave my plate uneaten! The mussels were also delicious, the garlicy broth was to die for. I had tried two of the homemade desserts (I can't recall which at the moment) and they were also phenomenal... I didn't go home disappointed and neither will you. Tried to get into the Dock on a Friday night last summer while hosting an impromptu birthday party for my 4-year-old twins and they turned us away because they "couldn't accommodate a group of 15." Meh. Came back solo the next day and was accosted by a funny little man on a unicycle outside, who asked me if I'd like to "check out the cabin" on his boat. No thank you. Once inside, was asked something not safe for print by a somewhat creepy elderly gentleman behind the bar. Eww. FINALLY, I sat at a table and ordered a rare tuna melt with a black and tan, and it was one of the most truly orgasmic experiences of my life... although they're apparently not classy enough to carry Bass Ale for a "true" black and tan... I suffered through a black and Blue Point toasted lager which was almost as good even though that fake local brewery was just bought out by Budweiser. I'm looking forward to coming back and ordering their micro kale salad with truffle aioli and golden locally grown organic sustainable baby fingerling beets. Great little bar with a lot of character and interesting signs. The food was ok. I had baked clams which were good and a fishwich which was essentially fried fish on an English muffin. Disappointing to have to pay extra for fries too as in most places this would come with the sandwich. Beer selection was just OK with only 3 draft choices and the rest was bottles. Service was the redeeming quality I guess. It was busy but service was quick and friendly. Overall it was just OK and pretty expensive for what it is. It's a dive bar in the best sense of the word. At first glance you may not think the food is that good but you would be sorely mistaken. So good it took us by surprise. We went because its considered to have the best burger in The Hamptons but I dont eat meat so I chose the tuna melt. Hands down best tuna melt Ive ever had! Uggggh there are no words for how awesome this place is! The food is amazing and the service is great. It all comes with a super low maintenance vibe. The place is definitely a locals joint, everyone is there for solid food and drink choices, not the new Montauk summer scene. Soft shell crab sandwich and tuna melt are both killer. I have also never been let down by any of the specials. Fried Oysters were to die for! Fresh shucked oysters, battered and fried. This place was BAD from the moment we walked in, but there is nothing open in November in Montauk ( marina area) except this place... when believe was the owner is rude...we were a group of 6 and he would not push a table together for us...OK, so we waited at the bar until one opened up. Service was mediocre at best..upon getting out food one entree was lacking scallops on it (fried scallop sandwich) four tiny scallops, my friend questioned this and the waitress agreed it looked bare and she would get more scallops. She came right back and said to gat the owner said no...wtf, don't you want to keep customers happy especially during the slow season. Now I know why this place is packed with locals. So delish!!! It's really small and not close the the Montauk town trip, but it was definitely worth the cab ride. We went there today to eat. This place is on the docks in Montauk and one would figure fresh seafood would be on hand. I had the sea scallop sandwich and the mussel chowder. The chowder had lots of potato chunks and onion pieces but seemed to be missing the mussels. The sea scallop sandwich consisted of 4 Costco sea scallops the size of a quarter on a plain burger bun. My friends meal, a strip steak sandwich and tomato and mozzarella salad was also pretty blah. $84 and 2 cokes later we were each shaking our heads in disbelief. The same thing and quality at Friendlys or some other chain would have cost us at most $45. read more

I've been coming to Montauk for over 30 years and can assure you that there are, generally speaking, no "good restaurants"in Montauk. In fact, I would extend that to the Hamptons, generally. Well, the Dock is an exception. The place is a pub, which serves, pitch perfect pub grub with emphasis on seafood. Their chowder is indeed the best on Long Island's East End, homemade, chunky, full of ripe tomatoes and fresh clams. Unlike the rest of the tourist traps on the Harbor, The Dock actually sources local seafood and their fresh tuna salad is the best you will ever have. Their burgers, flounder and specials are always on point and their bartender is great and their brews ice cold. This is why the place is always packed. Oh, did I mention, this is one of very, very few places out here which do not gouge. Prices are extremely fair. Are there people who are offended by this establishments no cell phone, no screaming kids, pro civility policies? Yes! Thank goodness, because those are the types of people whose behavior makes places like the Hamptons insufferable. If you want to really eat well on the East End, visit the farmers markets and the seafood markets and cook at home. If you must go out to eat, and drink, The Dock is your best bet. The Dock is my favorite eating place in Montauk and I've been coming for 45 years+. It's one of those one of a kind places that's very earthy, yet has a smart artistic soul. I like everything about it: the atmosphere is fishing shack but cool and with lots of humor. The service is energetic, the food is great - I love the littleneck clams - comes in a bath of buttery brine and fresh chopped garlic. Couple that with Greek salad - scrumptious and full of goodies. The French bread that comes with the clams is very good and perfect for dripping in that brine and you can ask for more. It's a popular place for locals and away people like me. For most communities that rely heavily on tourism there is always that one establishment that has a reputation for "keeping it real" by staying the same as if it was 1965. Key West, Palm Springs, Maui, Jackson Hole, etc. ; they're all the same and Montauk is no different. The restaurant "The Dock" has quite a few positive reviews. I would disagree. My wife and I were away for a weekend getaway. We woke up and checked out of Gurneys ( great place ) with coffees in hand and drove the 5 minutes it took to get to Salivar's Dock. We parked and walked right up to the restaurant. There is a sign that says "If you can't control your children.... go somewhere else!" just outside the door as well as a "no cellphones" sign and, most peculiarly, a "No Locals" sign. We assumed that it was just good natured fun and that the people inside would be fun and friendly enough that it would all just be a joke. When we walked in we were greeted by a woman who told us we couldn't bring outside coffees in. That was fine we didn't even think about it so we just needed a garbage or something. As soon as we were seated the owner ( we assume it is the owner. A small woman with jean shorts and a deep tan ) was so rude to us that we were kind of humiliated in front of the other patrons. She yelled "No outside drinks here!!" My wife was asking if there was a place to pour them out when the owner started speaking about us to another table ... " I mean jesus we sell coffee here. Can you believe it??". We got up and walked out. Here's some quick advice. There are at least four other restaurants on that dock that have A) a view of the water. This place is a dark old bar B) Much nicer people, obviously and C) you don't need to worry about being berated in front of a room full of strangers. Advice for the people at the Dock: If you are too angry, too unfriendly, too sick of needing tourist dollars but so unwilling to be polite.....as your own sign says....."go somewhere else." read more

Also, no pretentiousness, no kids running around screaming & wiping ketchup all over my seat-time & place for that folks, this isn't it! Watch your kiddos! When we saw the crowd of regular folk hanging out outside, we assumed the worst-a 3 hour wait for a 20$ seltzer with a lime (do I exaggerate or has anyone experienced the 'new' Montauk?) Not the case here? OMG!! We actually found it! Those smiling cell-phoneless people outside were actually real people hanging out, enjoying each other's company-the owner, the wait staff, making rounds & chatting! And the food? AWESOME!! All specials we had-Scallops, Swordfish, & Tuna were incredible (I tasted all 3, just for the Yelpers who want to need to know!). Sweet potato salad was delicious & my one silly requirement was met-yes, they know how to do a simple, perfect, designated-driver-summer-must-have: unsweetened iced tea (with no mandatory plastic straw-this place ROCKS!) OK, read the reviews, shut my cell phone off, glad I didn't have any kids to subdue, got a wad of cash from the ATM. Was looking for a great uncharted "drive bar/ restaurant. Unfortunately, I didn't find it here. Had the white clams with Pasta. The dish was dominated by olive oil. Lots of clams but even more oil. Love the EVOO, but not as a main ingredient. My partner had a "Where's Waldo" ( with Waldo, in this case being cod) cod cake plate. Lots of potato but little cod to be found. Carrot cake was the highlight of the meal.
