I'm between 4 and 5 stars. The malasadas when fresh are amazing. The fillings are unique and not too sweet, though sometimes there's a lot of filling and not a lot of bread lol. Ordering was easy, I ordered on Instagram and paid via Venmo. Pick up is really quick and easy once you find the location. They do have a sign on the street to let you know where to turn in to pick up the donuts. Note that the location is in Renton and not Seattle however there was no line or wait since we preorder so that's a plus for me. read more

Summary: Day 1 - AWESOME Donuts Day 2 - They degrade a lot, a lot. Logistics - less than ideal The awesome part: They truly have perfected the filling flavors. - Ube is amongst the strongest of ube flavors. For those familiar with Magnolia ube ice cream and considers that "the bar", this hits "the bar". - Guava is entirely delicious and flavorful. It's rare to find guava flavor, so it's even more awesome when it's great. - Haupia is Hawaiian coconut cream. This hits all the notes. - Smores is a bit easier to replicate, but theirs is on point too. The donut itself has that freshly fried taste with a very slight crunch. The texture and chew has the right body and yield, not too airy, not too doughy. Logistics is not easy, almost a pain. - Limited quantity so you have to pre-order, at least a week in advance, more like 2 or 3 if you're eyeing certain flavors. - Pickup is exactly Saturdays only at 11am. - Sold *ONLY* by the dozen, which is a pain to share especially since we're still not seeing people yet due to COVID. They need at least a half dozen option. But the real deal breaker is these donuts don't last. They are really bad in less than 24 hours. The outer sugar completely melted and is a gooey mess. The dough has of course hardened. The filling is fine. Lick it? Whatever. Despite the name of "Donut" lab, it's closer to filled malasada except they age as poorly as cheap donuts. They are as expensive as filled malasadas, and you have to buy a dozen. Doh. Definitely try it, but eat them all on the first day! read more

This could become my go-to malasada location. They're delicious and most importantly closer to me than my actual favorite spot. Dough is thick and chewy (more Chinese donut /Indian fry bread than traditional/Korean donut in texture). The fillings are fairly sweet so while there isn't as much filling as other shops, I don't think more would be better in this situation. read more

When you love everything Hawaiian, but aren't willing to travel to the islands during these times, these malasadas are the only solace. I got lucky and snagged the last dozen for a Saturday pickup several days beforehand. Definitely pre-order online in advance since waiting periods will be at least 1-2 weeks out. My "Connect 4" dozen consisted of guava, ube, haupia and vanilla custard. Seriously that guava flavor was on point, followed by the haupia. The malasadas were definitely fresh and made well, with the ideal plump shape and soft consistency. I haven't discovered a way to best preserve them yet, so they really do need to be eaten fresh the day of. Instructions for payment and pickup were well organized and straightforward from Craig. Really looking forward to trying out their other Hawaiian inspired flavors as well in the future. read more

If this was my first time trying Portuguese style donuts, I'd give them 5 stars. While these donuts are really good, the standard for me is Leonard's in Hawaii. These donuts are airy but don't have the same stretchy/chewy consistency like Leonard's. The filling was good but sometimes overpowered the donut. They operate out of a private residence and only have limited weekend pickup hours. You need to pre-order on their website, make payment electronically (e.g. Venmo), and will be sent pickup instructions. Overall a very good option to get your malasada fix in the Seattle area. read more

I have been following them on Instagram for a loong time and after my friend said this was some of the best donuts around, I finally ordered a dozen for two people. I understand, this was a lot of donuts but I was hoping that they would keep until the next day. I ate 2 donuts immediately in the car after picking them up and this was when they were THE BEST. Soft, fluffy, light and still warm. I ate 1 more donut, 2 hours later. Texture noticeably degraded. It was more dense, not as soft. 4 hours after pickup. Texture continues to degrade. 10pm on the day of pickup. Donut was no longer fluffy, not soft and almost dense. They are a far cry from the donuts I picked up at 12pm. I borderline wanted to throw these away but $3/each is too expensive for that. I subtracted one star because the donuts do not keep at all. I ate them throughout the day and they got progressively worse. I have bought donuts, mainly brioche style, that were okay the next day. Flavors were great. My favorite was the guava, followed by pineapple, guava and then Nutella smores. The guava was the strongest flavor of the bunch. I highly recommend bringing several people with you and eating them in your car outside of pickup or eating within an hour of pickup. I regret not eating all of them at once! read more

***This is more of a 4.5 star review*** After seeing this place on an article for one of the best donuts in Seattle, I had to try them out. They are run by husband and wife at their house so it's definitely a small business. Ordering and picking up was fairly easy though. Craig was very accommodating and responsive as well. We got the connect four box which is a box of all the flavors they had that week: matcha, Ube, guava, and lemon curd. First off: these donuts are so plump and pretty. The colors are so vibrant and the flavors are so true to what it stated. This is the first time I had an ube Donut that actually tasted like the real thing. Amazing. My favorite though was definitely the guava. The texture of these donuts are so light but sturdy. One of my favorite place for malasada for sure! Why not a 5 star? I feel like a dozen is a lot to buy so hoping they can sell singles or half a dozen in the future. Also, the drive to the place is a little weird haha and I'm not a fan. It was super easy to place an order online and select the time I wanted to pick up my order for the specified day. Also, pre-paid for my order and got my confirmation information right away. Best malasadas and also the best donuts in general that I've ever had. Order a few weeks in advance and brace yourself for a bit of a drive (south Renton), but these donuts are worth it and I will 100% do it again. Order the connect four to get four different flavors! Look no further... these are the BEST malasadas in town! I've had Donut Lab on several occasions at their different pop-ups and I can't help but come back for more! I love the assortment of flavors - my favorites being cereal milk, ube and boba milk tea! The malasadas are consistently fresh, soft and fluffy. I can't help but eat one (or two) in my car after picking them up lol! Although they don't currently have a brick and mortar location, it was incredibly easy to order online and schedule a pick-up time in Renton. The owner is really friendly and willing to accommodate alternative pick-up times and locations, if needed. In comparison with other bakeries / businesses serving malasadas, these are very fairly priced. I highly recommend their "Connect 4," which has 1 dozen donuts with an assortment of 4 flavors for $35. read more

We really wanted malasades for our son's island beach themed 1st birthday party, and initially The Donut Lab said they weren't going to be open that weekend for their own family event, however after chatting a bit Craig ended up saying they'd be happy to help and come in. Which was SO not expected but definitely appreciated! My husband picked the yummy donuts up on Saturday and said they looked and smelled delicious! Craig text me a couple hours later saying he had additional donuts that he deemed more cosmetically appealing than our initial batch, and he insisted on driving from Renton to Federal Way to deliver- who does that?! I encouraged him not to and said we were super happy with the initial batch, but the fact that he insisted and took his special time out of his own busy weekend to help make our son's party perfect just shows me the kind of company they are! Their respect for their product is clear. Aaaaaall that to say, I would give the 5 stars based on the above encounter alone. But then the donuts turned out aaaamazing, and were the hit of the party! I wonder what the restaurant industry will look like in 5-10 years. With sky high real estate prices in our region I can see why chefs would shy away from a brick and mortar location and set up shop in their own home. Craig did it. Word got out about his donut business. Technology is a major driver: Social Media marketing, a website that's simple and easy to navigate, & the ability to access a cell phone and a Mobile payment service. Everything is pretty much done by email and text. Only time you get to see him IRL is during the donut handoff. The exchange is less than 30 seconds. It's a little impersonal but hey, its COVID. I'm sure he's a really cool guy. If you and your friends plan on eating the malasadas in your car bring beverages, napkins, paper plates, and utensils. Or if you don't want to eat it in your car just drive to Coulon and hang out there. It's definitely a unique experience and something to try at least once. read more

So, let me start off by saying these are amazing!! We ordered guava, custard, ube and cinnamon sugar. All were very good but the custard was my favorite!! I read other people say they don't taste as good the second day, not sure how you have any leftovers, they are so good!! The ordering process was very easy and the pick up was seamless. Not worth it tbh. Filling is really less compared to Fuji bakery. Just remember you are paying $3 plus per donut so you would expect something special but this is just ordinary stuff. Also the place says donut lab Seattle but it's actually in Renton which is misleading. I would say that buying from Fuji bakery is much better and fulfilling. I gave one extra star because some flavors were unique in a way. read more

A wonderful and delicious malasada! If you can't eat right away, I recommend reheating in your oven for about 10 minutes before consuming. Crispy sugary goodness on the outside, creamy luscious filling on the inside. They don't skimp on the filling either. The dough texture inside was light and flaky. An all around pleasing taste experience. Sadly, not even a malasada lover such as myself can eat a whole dozen at once, so wish there was a way to order a smaller quantity. read more

I always thought malasadas can only be found in Hawaii.. but not anymore!! Ordered the ube and macadamia nut and they totally hit the spot! Both were equally delicious!! They were fresh, light and fluffy, not too sweet.. and still slightly warm when I picked up. They have a ton of other flavors too like guava, coconut, lychee, durian, nutella, vanilla custard, pandan/coconut, etc. Pricing: $30 for a dozen of all the same flavor, $35 if you want a dozen with 2 flavors. They currently do not have a brick and mortar location. But they do delivery or you can pick up. Online ordering was seamless! In addition, the owner was very responsive and great to work with! They're open only on the weekends so be prepared to order in advance. I ordered mine one week ahead and chose to pick them up at their Renton location. Glad that they're local. So if you want a taste of the islands, get your cravings satisfied and try the Donut Lab. read more

Delicious! We had malasadas instead of a cake for our wedding and decided to try these for our anniversary. They did not disappoint! Read the fine print before ordering. These are VERY expensive malasadas ($3 each, to be exact), so one would expect some flexibility with ordering and pickup. Think again... (Strike 1) Must be prepaid, and credit cards seem to be an issue for the owners. (Strike 2) Once the malasadas are ordered, you have to wait ~ 3 WEEKS for pickup. You could fly to Hawaii, quarantine for two weeks, and still get your Leonard's fix quicker, at 1/4th the price. (Strike 3) You can only pickup your order at one specific inconvenient location at one specific time, after waiting 3 weeks. You'd think at those prices, the malasadas would be delivered! With all those restrictions, it's hard to see how The Donut Lab can stay in business for long. Three strikes and you're out! read more

For it being very wet and rainy, this place feels like a nice relief from all that with the bright lighting and the cafe-like feel of the place. There's a grassy wall near the back for photo ops, and there are some tables, window seating and front couch seating. They don't only sell macarons here; there's also coffee, tea, and macaron ice cream sandwiches. I got a baker's dozen, which comes with 12 randomly assorted regular-sized macarons in a small container. This particular one came with three limited flavors: red velvet, cran-orange and a pear-like flavor. They were marked separately on a card provided with the box that shows all their regular offerings of macaron flavors. This came to $36 compared to $40 for the same number of macarons if you wanted to choose specifically which flavors you wanted instead. I also got myself a Thai tea macaron ice cream sandwich; each one is prepackaged and $8. Both people working at the counter were extremely helpful in helping me decide what to get, and explaining the differences between both sets. Flavor wise, I was not disappointed: - My Thai tea macaron ice cream sandwich hit the spot! The macarons did not come apart too easily and I could still maintain the shape of the sandwich throughout. From other visits to their stand during conventions, I recommend their Cap'n Crunch berry, lemon, peach and durian flavors for ice cream sandwiches. - One of my friends and I loved the Vietnamese coffee flavored macaron. Taste is strong like phin-brewed coffee and it didn't have much sweet of a taste, something that would not have done well for this flavor. - The cran-orange and blueberry flavors were our other favorites; both had tastes that reminded me a lot of their respective flavors. - The box also had dark chocolate, vanilla, ube, Thai tea, pistachio and salted caramel flavors. All were decent and tasty. What I like about this place is that the taste for all of their macarons is exactly as advertised and never bogged down by the flavor that macaron shells are usually full of. I can't eat too many of these at once since they can be too sweet over time, so I would save these for a group setting where you can share these. By themselves, they are a great way to get your sweet tooth the love it needs!

There is a paid parking garage near the Hyatt you can use, or you can use the nearby Coulon Park parking lot and walk over here like I did. There's no seating inside here; instead there's tons of treats, merch, tea bags, gummies and other products on tables and shelves filling up the right-hand side of the interior. There's also a grassy background where you can take photo ops of yourself and/or your drinks. Up at the front counter to the left-hand side of the entrance are two kiosks you can use to punch in the drinks you want. The menu is also up behind the counter as well. For this visit, I got their tiramisu milk tea with boba. The tiramisu foam ayer was large enough that when I stirred the whole drink in, I could taste the tiramisu's slight coffee-like, earthy hints throughout. The milk tea itself is very strong as I could taste the bitter undertones of the tea easily after just one sip. Also love how they put their drinks in a plastic container shaped like a can! As for their boba, I actually don't mind them being much smaller than many other boba places. They're both small and very chewable, and still look very good sinking to the bottom of the drink in case a photo op is needed. Regular size boba would take up too much space inside the can anyway. Overall drink was a tad too sweet though. This is one of the few places that come to mind for me when someone asks me what boba places there are around the Renton area, as I've gotten great drinks here for every visit since 2021. I'd love to come back again and try their other drinks when I'm around the area!
