Stopped in Louisville on a road trip from Wisconsin to Asheville, NC and we're looking for a nice patio atmosphere to enjoy some local grub. Of course a trendy flare on fried chicken grabbed our attention. The patio was great with the strung lights and tabletop fire pits, along the main drag in the hip Highlands neighborhood. I have to start this review by giving Shay the recognition she deserved! We got a menu break down, inside scoop to all their best offers, and really five stars for the service. She was extremely lively and fun, immediate sold me on five stars even before our food came out. I didn't really look into their menu too much, saw that they offered spooned bread and I knew I had to drop by. I will say, they get crowded relatively quick so if you don't mind, just seat at the bar. You'll be served right away and there's plenty of table space. Be prepared to get your hands dirty. They have fried chickens that will blow your mind but it's their special in house honey that's going to make you lose it. It was so tempting not to take that bottle with me. And as for the spooned bread... oh my god. I don't think my review can do it any justice. It is the best cornbread I have ever had the pleasure of eating. They also offer a bunch of different sides that we caught a glimpse of that's definitely worth a returning for. I am very pleased with the experienced I had here. I spotted here for a spontaneous (and hungover) lunch with a few friends of mine. Given the high rating, I figured it was our best bet. All I can say is, wow! I had been missing southern fried chicken since I moved to the west coast, so I had to get their fried chicken sandwich. It was incredible. Tot start, I came here with two friends on a weekend night and they were fairly busy. We put our names in and waited at the bar. The bartender was completely avoiding us. He wouldn't even look up to acknowledge that we were there for AT LEAST 15 Minutes. To the point we were joking about it. Finally when we sat down, the food made up for the bad start. The chicken was great, as well as the mac and cheese. The corn bread was DELICIOUS. favorite part of the meal. The waiter was also great, explaining how the menu worked, as its best served as a family style. If the beginning of the experience would have been like that, it would have been a 5 star review. While in Louisville, KY for Louder than Life fest we were looking for a place to eat. We decided on this place as they seemed to have some vegetarian options. I ordered a salad and Mac n cheese. It was really tasty food and good portions. I was a little surprised my Mac n cheese was spicy. I didn't mind because I like some spice but I didn't recall that from the menu description. The person sitting next to me said hers was not so I got a bonus flavor . I recommend this place if you're in Louisville! The vibe was really cool too. My goodness did we just have one amazing dinner here! Southern comfort food at its best. The fried chicken, shrimp po boys, spoon bread and mac 'n cheese were out of this world! Service was really great. We were checked on multiple times during our visit. The chicken is AMAZING. But it was a little hot. I don't typically eat hot/spicy food but that's how it came. It was still good. But wasn't expecting it to be so spicy. My friend who has been here before the chicken wasn't spicy like ours was. So they must change up the batter, I'm not sure. But regardless, it was still good! I enjoyed the mac and cheese. Not many people can master mac and cheese from scratch. I think they do a good job and it's super creamy. The Eagle was definitely not what I expected. It's a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, that's for sure. The bar takes up almost the entire first "floor," and then upstairs is the overlook (which really just overlooks the bar with a big TV blocking our view), and then more places to sit upstairs (but I couldn't see that area too well). We went on a Sunday at lunchtime, so it was booming. We chose to sit at the overlook to avoid the 15 minute wait or sitting outside on a cold day. Our hostess and our server were VERY friendly and attentive, which was awesome. Our waitress kept our drinks filled and made sure we didn't need anything without annoying us every five minutes. The manager asked how we were doing, and we had mouths full of food, so of course, we were doing great. Ok, here's the reason I'm not giving The Eagle five stars. The beer and drinks selection is huge and almost overwhelming, but the food selection is very minimal. We both ordered the fried chicken sandwich, which has mayo, pickles, and coleslaw on it. When it came out, I didn't realize it came with coleslaw on it (my fault for not reading it), so I was weary because I don't particularly like coleslaw. However, I'm glad I put on my big girl panties because it was delicious--messy for sure, but definitely worth it! Sides cost about $4 extra, but we both ordered sides anyway. He ordered the macaroni and cheese, which was awesome, and I ordered the fries, which were also awesome (they came with a sauce that is like the sauce that comes with blooming onions or onion rings, and it was my favorite part of the fries). If you want to waste 2 hours of your life then come on down to The Eagle. Asked the host for a table outside and she told me 35 mins. So I said ok here's my name and phone number. This was at 9:10. Fast forward 45 mins later...2 table have been open and cleaned for 15 mins and this group of ethic majority pull up and go sit down at the table immediately. The server tells them they need to go see the host for a table but they just sit there and one proceeds to see the host for menus(l (which they're given) so I go to see the host about my table since I've been waiting for 45 minutes and why they were seated before me. The host tells me oh they're just looking at the menu but a server won't serve them. The host then goes to sit me at the bar which I could've just sat at by myself and I told him I asked for a table but he just shrugged his shoulders and said that's all he has. Meanwhile a server is taking drink orders for the group that was "just looking at menus" at the table. So they move us to the firepit as a table. By the time I was able to order (25 mins later) the table "just looking at the menu" has their food. So we got our drinks n finish those and now they're about to close. It's 10:50 and the manager comes out and says the fired chicken is just going into the fryer. It'll be about another 10 minutes since it takes 6 mins to cook and 4 mins to cool. Honestly by now I thought they just forgot all about us. So he offers us some waters and the group that's "just looking at the menu" are long gone. I was meaning to go to The Eagle in Cincinnati since it opened, but, alas, never had the chance. Thankfully, The Eagle Louisville is closer to me! I have been twice now and have loved each experience. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu! Each time I walked in and sat without a wait, which I hear is very different from the Cincinnati location. The waiters are promptly at our table taking our order, and before you know it your food is at your table. Like within 10-15 mins. Amazing. The fried chicken is a MUST have, but if that isn't your thing they have other options. Each side is a share-able portion (and priced for that (they can split it on a check)) so make sure you are aware of then when ordering your side (s). I would highly recommend the Mac & Cheese and the Bacon as a app! Can't wait to go back again! read more

Boyfriend used the restroom, so while waiting the host told me me they had a cancellation. Kudos to the host, she was great! We started with brown sugar bacon and artichoke dip. Superb! For dinner we split a whole chicken and just about every side on the list. I'd recommend everyone do it this way. I have to admit that my first experience at The Eagle was at the Cincinnati location in Over The Rhine -- and I was really impressed with the set up (the food was excellent, the beer list was also was good, and it was a fun atmosphere.) I was excited when I heard it was coming to Louisville, but it took me a relatively long time to get out and try it. The food is as good as I remember and it is a very nice set up. The outdoor space is pretty amazing especially compared to others in the Highlands. The worst thing I can say about it is it is super popular, so typically its not always the best to try to get a seat without reservations, but it is still one of my new faves. The Eagle isn't probably the type of restaurant I normally love, but the food quality is very high, it is tasty (maybe slightly expensive), but I think its a really fun spot. Loved seeing the transformation of El Camino to The Eagle. Ambiance is great! Service is very nice. Food, excellent! Here's the deal, they are known for their fried chicken with spicy honey sauce. It come 1/4, 1/2, or whole. Sides are extra and shareable. However, they also have a few salads and quite a few other sandwiches. I got the chicken (white meat) and it was very, very good. Juicy and flavorful without feeling greasy. I split a side of Mac and cheese which was creamy and extra cheesy. My dinner mate got the braised pork sandwich that looked and tasted delicious. After a few bites, my bf leaned over and said 5/5! Says a lot from a picky eater. My other friend got the sloppy joe. Sloppy bc it was 50% cole slaw! However she really enjoyed it. Really good food, nice ambiance, just be aware that Steven at the front desk will blatantly lie to your face and tell you that they're booked solid for the next three hours if he doesn't like the look of you. 3:30pm on a Saturday we had family in town that had a flight to catch that evening and we wanted to take them someplace great. On our way to The Eagle we called to see what the wait times were like, and they indicated there was no wait time for a party of four. That call ended as we pulled into their back parking lot, and two minutes later at the front desk Steven asked if we happened to have a reservation, because they were booked for the next three hours. I said that's not possible, you just told us two minutes ago that there was zero wait time for a party of four, but he was sticking to his story so we left. My cousin, who was there with us, called them on our way out, another two minutes later, and was told that they were taking walk ins no problem, but wouldn't give a wait time until we were physically standing there. So, evidently The Eagle has a policy of discriminating against customers that don't fit their desired image or something, and are willing to lie to your face to keep you out. Absolutely disgusting, and I will not be going back as long as I have to deal with Steven at the front desk. That said, if you are lucky enough to fit whatever image or qualifications Steven is arbitrarily selecting by, their food is really pretty great. read more

Completely disappointing. I've eaten at the Eagle more times than I can count, and today has sign, sealed and delivered that today was my last time doing so. My boyfriend and I decided to hit up the eagle late night on a Monday. To begin with, we were sat at a dirty table. Luckily we had our toddler with us so we came prepared with wipes and were able to clean it ourselves. We ordered succotash, fries, corn fritters, and a grilled cheese sandwich with fried chicken on it. Lemme start with the fries. I have NEVER had such sad fries. It's as if they took fries that had been dying in the window and decided to throw them back into the fryer, re-season them, and serve them to us. They were overcooked, and WAY over-seasoned. But the aioli was fine as usual. The grilled cheese...tell me why it was completely drenched and over saturated with grease. It was soggy! Gah. The fried chicken was for sure one that had been thrown back into the fryer after sitting for some time to bring it back to life; didn't work though. Burnt, icky. The cheese was halfway melted. I understand it being the end of the night and wanting to go home and not cook anymore and take short cuts. But really I don't get it because as an industry person myself, I don't see any point in working in the food industry unless you hold yourself to a standard and perform at your best of your given ability. read more

If I had to criticize this place, I'd say that their craft beer menu is extensive but falls short (as a craft beer aficionado, I can get down with a Deschutes or Ballast Point, but they aren't true 'craft' brewers, really..).
