Just finished breakfast. (Hash and eggs). Food was very good. Hash was homemade. Eggs cooked correctly. Coffee decent and service friendly. it was 22.50 before tip. 16.95 for meal. 3.75 for coffee. Over salted potatoes, plain, nothing in them but salt and called home fries. Yuck No sweetener of any kind or jellies on table - at a breakfast place! We ordered coffee; she took my cup and brought it back filled, no creamer, no sugar, no teaspoon. Those required two more trips. Disorganized serving. Two stars only because I feel bad for this place. Ordered a broccoli and cheese omelet, was THE worst I have ever had. Broccoli was hard as a rock, no seasoning on the eggs at all, no flavor from the cheese. There was somehow very high water content in the omelet and was sitting in a pool of water. The potatoes were way over seasoned and not cooked enough, the potato was still hard. The toast, however covered in butter was somehow drier than the Sahara desert. The coffee was decent. But like, I order a coffee, it gets poured, then I'm looking around for sugar and spoon, the waitress was on here phone, didn't want to bother her so I found a table that had sugar, grabbed it and just stirred with my knife. For almost $20 for an omelet and coffee, this was a complete disaster. Thankfully (possibly the owner) overheard and stopped the waitress for charging me. I still tipped out of pitty for this place. On top of all that the "cook" started arguing with me about the meal and that he cooked everything right. I have toured the country as a live sound engineer and tour manager for 10 years. I have been to every city 15x over. I lived at greasy spoon diners on omelets and coffee. This place, by far the worst. Good location, kinda neat inside if you ignore the duct tape keeping some of the seats together. Better food will bring more customers. Just go on youtube, find any good diner and just copy exactly what they do. read more

The breakfast is great & the price is right! In todays economy, a reasonable price & great food is hard to find. For lunch, I recommend the bacon cheeseburger. I've been going there since 2001. I moved away for 7 years and come back to a remodeled dining area. Wherever I go, I order a very limited selection. The menu hasn't changed except for the price. It's only risen a small percentage but, it's a big mistake to make money over feeding People. Almost $14.00 for 3 eggs and meat is too much, really. A coffee is $2.85..... The servers are young girls that seem to be lacking the "service" part of their job. Is it Me or just the norm ? I give kudos to the owner for asking how things were and being concerned. I know She is trying to make a living and doing a great job. An empty place means low profits. I will still patronize the place but, get my coffee before I go. Just a side note, the paint is great.A lot of flags would tie into the name along with some "Early American" decor. read more

Inexpensive and no frills breakfast joint. Street parking and plenty of tables and booths. Friendly staff; they take credit card as well as good ole American Greenbacks. Stopped by for breakfast for the first time. I had the eggs Benedict and my wife had the homemade hash which was excellent. I would definitely recommend. Service was very friendly and our order was up quickly. Prices are going up due to gas prices and supply chain shortages but breakfast was still reasonably priced. The Early American - Home of The Original Bagel Breakfast sandwich. Wow, Quincy has quite the history. John Adams would be proud that Q-town keeps producing trailblazers like the man who invented this sandwich. OK, tongue planted firmly in the side of my cheek. Breakfast sandwiches have come a long way. Progress is a good thing. You don't really want the original. On top of that, the food took a while, and the coffee wasn't all that good. (but I had 3 cups while I was waiting!) On the plus side, the waitress was friendly, and I enjoyed the Welch Rarebit. Yes, I ordered two entrees because I'm a fat f***. But in my defense, I had never seen Welch Rarebit on a menu before and I couldn't decide between the two. I got both. What a country! read more

The birthplace of the original breakfast sandwich, or so they say - Bagel, fried egg, ham and cream cheese. My hubby and I decided to drop by on New years Day morning for a good old fashioned breakfast. The hubby had the waffles and scrambled eggs and I had the original breakfast sandwich. Both were very yummy and cheap. The service was ok, there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant. We did have to wait a bit for service and for our food but we assumed it was because it was NYD. Since the food was so good and the prices were great, we would definitely return. read more

Great little hole in the wall with lots of history. As far back as our early pioneers you may ask? Maybe not. This place is est. 1988 They claim to be the place of the "original" breakfast bagel. It wasn't busy on a Sunday morning. Simple menu. What I liked: the eggs dropped over corned beef combo. That's some serious corned beef. Definitely homemade, none of that mixed veggies or artificial seasoning that take away the flavor of the meat. This corned beef was pure beef, with the right amount of seasonings. Not over-salted. Truly delicious. I can't recall ever having had one like that. I'm sure there are places where there is more authenticity in the corned beef but this was definitely a happy first for me. Their shakes looked good too. I wasn't allowed to have one. I'll sneak in one day and try though. Service is quick and easy. This place is really a no frill, old-time neighborhood joint with great food. Definitely worth the trip back in time to the Early American... in the future read more

I really enjoyed my visit here! unexpectedly. I say that bc we just wanted to go somewhere nearby and cheap to eat, and decided on this lil diner. The ambiance is so sweet, old American style diner. open since 1988. The older lady that works there is so sweet and friendly. The food was soo reasonably priced (cheap) and yummy. I had their famous Beef Hash on a roll for lunch and it was pretty good. just wanted I wanted. My friend ordered the Turkey Reuben with Sourkraut. Pretty good too. I know this place has been around forever. I used to eat here when I was in middle school . However, even back then the place was sticky and over priced. The coffee cup was dirty and the table was sticky when touched. I sadly ate here because I had no other choices at the time. But I would never go back. This place has seemed to take a nosedive over the past couple of years. What was once a cute homey breakfast joint with fast service, has quickly become a melting pot for mayhem. The ONE thing that stayed the same is the wait staff. The wait staff has ALWAYS been extremely rude and careless. I just wish that wasn't the one thing that was consistent. We went mid-morning on a weekday with hardly anyone in the spot. It took about an hour for our food to get out. Mind you, all the other tables were done eating and we ordered omelets. When we asked the waitress about the wait, she said "go to McDonalds then" and stormed off. The food was mediocre at best. I will never be returning to my once favorite breakfast spot. Yum, had a great breakfast here this weekend! The EA is right near my boyfriend's house, and we went this weekend for an early breakfast. It is small with vintage decor-wooden tables, a carpet, bald eagle photos (picture having breakfast at your Great Aunt's house, lol). I usually go with an Omelette, but their house breakfast sandwich caught my eye and I had to go with it! Them have claimed to invent the BFast sandwich in 1988 so I went with the OG- toasted plain bagel with cream cheese, ham, egg and cheese. Homefries were big and rustic. Coffee was hot and refilled often. Service was efficient and friendly and the bill came to $13.00..vintage decor and prices! This was a truly delicious breakfast sandwich and I would definitely recommend the Early American for a cheap and quick breakfast! read more

I love the Early American. Best breakfast in all of Quincy. Pancakes, Waffles, Eggs, Bacon, YUM!!! The menu has, LEGIT, not changed in 10 years, and it's fine with me. Everything taste fresh!! Breakfast sandwiches are the same prices that you would pay at Dunkin' Donuts but TWICE the size and definitely not made in a microwave. The Belly Bomber is great if your not craving breakfast food. A 1/3 pound burger with everything served up on an English muffin! Try it with a milkshake!! Made with milk, ice cream and strawberries, bananas, or chocolate!! Delicious! read more

My fiancé and I were hungry one morning during winter storm Nika (Feb. 5 2014). It snowed about 6 inches by noon and sleeted for a couple hours. My fiancé, Jamie and I were super hungry, so we decided to venture out for a breakfast diner. The Early American is the closest establishment to her place, so we parked along The Fowler House across the street and dodged across passing plows to merely enter this place. Mind you, this is all happening at about 2pm on a Wednesday amidst a snowstorm, and they close at 2:30pm. So take this review with a grain of salt. We walked in and a frumpy old lady near the door just looked at us, very confused. We look back, but she quickly glanced away and walked toward the rear of the restaurant towards the kitchen. No instruction. Not a word. Wicked rude. Jamie and I assume it's a "seat yourself" kind of place (it at least looks like it is), and sit in the corner booth at the window. Minutes later, the old lady finally comes over and asks us for drinks, and we order coffee before she throws some menus on the table. We glance over the options as she walks away, and moments later she returns, asking for our order. Now, pay attention to what happens next. She asks what we would like to order; nice enough. I order the basic two eggs, homefries and toast, while Jamie asks for the pancake combo (+ eggs and homefries) with whipped cream and strawberries. This woman literally snaps at my fiance, rudely saying that they don't have strawberries, as if she was supposed to know that. Instead, she orders blueberries; easy enough. About 5 minutes later, this freakin' broad returns telling us "we don't have anymore homefries. You're gonna get french fries instead." Jamie and I exchange confused, uneasy glances, acknowledging that we really don't want french fries, as we intentionally ordered homefries. Breakfast food vs. lunch food, right? She continues: "Sorry, it's all we got. We're closing down in less than a half-hour. If we started making homefries, they wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes," in other words saying 'you don't have a choice, we're going to give you french fries' and as soon as she finished talking she promptly walked away. So there we are, looking at each other like "WTF?" I'm over here thinking, if we had known that, we would've saved them the time and energy, and just have left. When all you order is eggs, toast, and breakfast potatoes, you expect all of the ingredients to be there. No homefries? No problem. But that's like 1/3 of my freaking $5 breakfast. You're not just going to replace it with fries. And Jamie was over here contemplating between that and an omelet. If you weren't so freakin' rude, she would have ordered something else. So I look at my girl and say "do you want me to cancel the order?" To which she nods, uneasily. I walk up to the counter, where the old lady is holding the wall up (lounging about), and I'm like "do you think I could actually just cancel my order?" Oh, HELL no! Here's the poop-storm. She says "you can't cancel it. The cook is finishing up." I say "Well, we didn't really want french fries. That's like, lunch food. We'd rather just cancel it all-together." Then the cook, who I can see through a window in the wall, says "you want to cancel it? Why?" And I repeat, "Well, we didn't want french fries" "Seriously? That's wicked rude" ....Dude, if you have any integrity, then fire your freakin' grandma. "I'm sorry man. If we had known that a third of our breakfast wasn't available, we just wouldn't have ordered anything." He said "They're the same thing. They're cooked the same way, just different shapes." Ok. 1. I didn't order that. 2. They're not the same thing. They're cut differently because they're different foods. Yeah, try offering me mashed potatoes, or potato chips and give me that same answer; 'its just a different shape' my butt. I work in food service, and I know first-hand it's bad form to give a sorry excuse like that to pass off a different product to a paying customer. The old lady's like "well I just told you," and I'm like "no, you told us after we ordered and the cook already started making our food. We didn't have much of an option" I'm like "Well, I'll at least pay for the coffee" And the lady just stands there. Looking at me. Arms crossed. Like some sort of elderly zombie. And I repeat "I can pay for the coffee, it's no problem...or, we can just leave." She says "Well, I'm waiting for him to finish," gesturing through the window towards the pissed off dude at the grill. But he shrugs, and she's all "Waaaht, you want them to just go!?" And at that moment I'm like, eff this ish. I'm out of here. So I go back to Jamie, tell her to get up and grab her coat, and we drive off to IHOP and have a much better meal with a much better waitress for a much better price. All who venture forward, beware. I recommend traveling the extra 10 minutes to McKay's or Kristin's in Braintree. The End. read more

Quincy has some other great breakfast places. My experience a few months ago includes average food and awful service. The older waitress there Rita was extremely rude as a person. and by the looks of other reviews here this isn't unusual. Unfortunately this was back in the Spring and I don't remember exactly what she was saying. It was enough that It was the topic of our entire breakfast conversation and even days later (horrifying). I assume that she's a family member of the owners which is why she's still working. I'm from Quincy and I'm never coming here again and to anyone else, I think you're much better off at Newcomb's, McKays, probably even IHOP down the road. 2 stars for average food and awful service. read more

This story starts with a hair in our takeout corn beef hash. Though unappealing, it's somewhat understandable that this can happen in a fast-paced service setting. When I called to tell the restaurant, I spoke to a man and told him there was a hair in our food. He replied "ok." I paused, waiting for the customary, "I'm sorry about that, let me refund that." When I was met with continued silence, I said "so I'd like a refund on that." The man told me he couldn't refund my credit card on the phone because he "had to look at the invoice," so I drove back. When I got there, the young woman up front very politely apologized. However, when I explained that I wanted a full refund, and not just a refund on the hash, the man from the phone call appeared, this time with much more to say. First, he questioned where the hash was. I said that I dumped it, and he exclaimed "You didn't bring it in???" Apparently, he was prepared to conduct a thorough forensic investigation before giving me my money back. He also seemed outraged that I wanted a refund on the whole meal, apparently insulted that I didn't want to sift through my other food for additional hairs before eating it. After he walked away, exasperated, the young woman again politely apologized and provided my refund. This place might want to consider changing its name to the Late Afternoon American. Maybe with a little more sleep, their attitudes would improve. read more

We came in because I live around the corner and love breakfast. I should have gone to one of the other great breakfast places in the city. We were seated and handed one menu for the the of us. I was asked about coffee and when it was poured, it splashed all over the table., the waitress then told us that they were busy and they would be with us whenever. We had a 20 minute wait to have our order taken and a 45 minute wait for the food to come out. We were time crunched and almost walked out. The food was great and the only redeeming thing. I had the hash and cheese omelette and loved it. The stars are for the food. The service was anything but good. I will take my money to one of the other breakfast places in Quincy. read more

I live around the corner and was disappointed by this place before, but decided to give the place a try, hoping for and improvement since I last visited. Unfortunately, my experience was not a good one. I arrived an seated myself. Very shortly, I was greeted and given a menu to peruse. I really like their "Early Bird Special", but since I arrived just before noon, that special was not available. I asked the waitress what the price for the "Early Bird Special" after the special time frame ended. She replied, "about $7 bucks". When I pressed for an exact price, she patronisingly pointed to the price of two eggs and toast and the price for a side of bacon on the menu and then said, "well, it's about $7". I mentioned to the waitress that I could add prices à la carte by myself, but what I had asked for was the price of the special after 9A. There are no similar "combination plates" on the menu for someone who just wants eggs, toast, bacon and home fries. Home Fries are not listed as a side item, so I actually couldn't create a price for myself. So, in the end I ordered to eggs, bacon, English muffin and home fries. About 20 minutes later, the food still had not come. As I watched other people get their food, I decided to leave. When I approached the counter to pay for my soda and told them I was going to leave, one waitress asked "Are you sure?" And I replied, "Yes, my food is taking too long". My original waitress then came behind the counter and said "You're all set". I paused for a moment and motioned to my soda bottle and my waitress said "You're all set.", and waived her hand to dismiss me. No apology was made, no effort was made to see where my breakfast was or to assure me that it was coming up soon. Only a curt dismissal. I then used Yelp to search for another breakfast place in Quincy. Nearby, Craig's Café received great reviews for SERVICE and FOOD. So, I have them a try and was not disappointed. The Early American needs to: 1) Clean up the space - you can keep the Early American theme, but tidy up, dust and make your wall art look neat! 2) Find a friend with a printer and ask them to print some signs. The hand-written coffee price sign looks shady and lends credence to reviewers who question the accuracy of the checks. 3) Ask FOH staff members to wear neat clothing that doesn't look like you've just rolled out of bed. There is plenty of competition on Hancock Street for the breakfast dollar. Sadly, this place cannot compete. read more
