We are familiar with the area and frequent many of the local establishments at night but not many during the day. Street parking available in a nice small town setting. Not huge, but plenty of seating options and a nice menu. Bakery items, breakfast options and of course COFFEE! Staff is very friendly and love the local and healthy options. This place has great food and really sweet people working there. It's a cute place in a great location. The issue is the speed of service. It took us 55 minutes to get our food. Exactly 55 minutes. Nothing special about our orders, just standard stuff picked straight off the menu. So that definitely needs to be addressed and worked on to earn my business again. Very yummy, creative breakfast sandwiches and a blueberry muffin that tasted homemade and fresh. I got the chickadee, and my friend ordered the refresher. Both were delicious, but I especially liked the jalapeno cream cheese on mine. The sandwiches were kinda bagel-heavy, but there were options to get a wrap or English muffin instead, so maybe I'll do that next time. Our Maine maple iced coffees were great, and the atmosphere inside is nice. It's cozy with a lot natural light and wasn't filled with the sound of blenders and yelling like a Starbucks or something. There are so many ways I could start this review. *it's called the early bird, not the quick bird *don't bring your city-boy husband who just wants a quick bacon and eggs breakfast Are two of the obvious choices. First--it's not really a sit-down breakfast place. It's very small and most folks are picking up orders to go. It's a cute little coffee house but in tourist season, it's crowded. We ordered a sit down breakfast that took (gasp) 58 minutes to come out. That said, my breakfast sandwich (the daily special) was very good. Very. Partner's eggs sausage and home fries were good, "nothing special" except the sausage which he said was much better than average. Hipster vibe with some dreadful art but it's art and that's fun. Eclectic, interesting mugs (mine was Edward Gorey), books on the table mostly but not entirely vintage (loved that) and locally brewed coffee. If you lived in South Berwick, you'd love this place. I couldn't give five stars because the wait was actually crazy and somebody at my table was starting to actually despair. But the food is quite good and it's a cool little place. read more

A charming coffee/tea/breakfast café, The Early Bird is a quaint, cozy place to meet with a friend to catch up on each others' lives, or just curl up with a good cup o' locally roasted Java and a good book. We were looking to get out of the cold and get some breakfast to energize ourselves in preparation for a busy day. I intended to get a side order of French toast, but ended up with a full order, consisting of 3 slices. It came with a side, so I requested fresh fruit. I really didn't want to load up on carbs, but when my order was served, I didnt regret it. I put my fresh fruit consisting of strawberries and bananas atop the French toast; it was so good, no syrup was necessary. The owner was very friendly and she chatted with my friend, both from local towns, and they had a good conversation. The selection of coffees were local roasters and brands. What a hidden gem!! The Early Bird reminded me of places in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. All local food, all organic with a country feel. We were camping in the area and found this on the Yelp app. We came everyday. The Mexican Burritos are insane!! So so good!! We also loved the smoothies! Since we had our dog we took it out food to go but the staff insisted we sit outside and even set up a table for us. Highly recommend. One note: I think that South Berwick needs to do something with all the huge trucks that come barreling through the square. It is loud and takes away from the charm of the downtown. Food was good, but service was awful. I came in at the end of a rush, so I expected a bit of a wait. But when it came to give me my order (in which no one else was left waiting inside). It was the wrong order and it turns out they gave my order to someone else. So great, I had to wait even longer with no offer of maybe a "coffee on the house" or any type of reprise for their very obvious mistake. B/c yes, I was there long enough to drink my entire coffee. This place is awesome! Saw the sign and just had to stop. They have amazing artwork for sale and a great vibe. The menu is very good too. We went with an egg with cream cheese on an Asiago bagel and it was the best egg on a bagel sandwich that I've ever had. We also got a maple iced coffee infused with CBD which was next level good. You couldn't taste the CBD but trust me, it was in there. Never felt so relaxed. The man who helped us was great and patient as we looked over the menu. I wish we'd stayed and gotten a full breakfast because the plates being delivered to the tables around us looked so good. It's a must stop for our next drive through the area. We might even go back just to buy some of the unique art. Street parking but seemed to be plenty in the area and multiple tables if you want to eat in. I've only purchased two different breakfast sandwiches on two different days so far, but both times I have been blown away at the quality of food I have received. The sandwiches where well put together, and well cooked. What stuck out to me most of all was how nice the ingredients looked, fresh and healthy, and tasted to match. Some how managing the otherworldly, impossible quality one usually sees from plastic food used in mass food advertising, only with real food here. What a delightful find for the long trek north from Dover to Wells and beyond. The coffee is strong but not burnt, the food hot and ready shortly after I arrived, since we'd called ahead with a to go order. The local crowd was welcoming, cheerful regional art adorned the walls and sunny smiles all around while I waited. We will definitely be making this a regular stop in the future. The Screaming Eagle as a wrap was the perfect blend of ingredients though with so many tempting breakfast options made fresh to order- I'm sure I'll try lots more. I guess after 2 years I should update my review. The Early Bird is such a warm and inviting place. The food remains terrific. I dare you to try the "IDYTTI" on an Asiago bagel...an unexpected yet fantastic combination of flavors. Although it is tough to choose between that and a grilled, yes grilled, homemade blueberry muffin. The grilling gets the muffin warm throughout and carmelizes the sugars just a bit...addicting. This was the first time we tried went to this small cafe since moving to Berwick, Maine. Honestly, it looks closed a lot of the time, but it's really just the lighting I think (and that it's a small place). *NOTE: CASH ONLY PLACE-and no ATM* We arrived around lunch time, and the two sisters behind the counter seemed very busy but still warmly greeted us asking what we wanted. This is a place where you have to order before you sit down (by a menu located on the wall), which sometimes is tricky if you don't know what you want. After finally deciding on lunch (they have many breakfast choices!) we chose 2 turkey club wraps. We were quickly informed that they had a big catering order to do, so we'd have to wait awhile (we didn't mind) and they only had enough turkey for one wrap (they cook up the turkey themselves). We ordered a chicken club wrap instead and only had to wait 10 mins (the girls work together pretty fast!) You got free chips with your lunch order, and I must say the wraps were delicious! You can obviously see and tell by the taste that they're homemade and made to order. Overall, the food was very delicious! The prices are slightly high, but certainly worth it for the quality. We will be back for breakfast very soon! :) BTW, Try the coffee, it really is the BEST! :) read more

I just had take out this AM. I have gone there several time. I had the 2 eggs, toast, and choice of fruit, bacon, home fries and something else which I forget (ham, perhaps). Their menu is online if you want to save time and see if it is something you would like. TIP: Their homefries are very over-spiced. My friend who also ate the "Slammer" sandwich also had a bit of GI distress after this. So, ask them to tone done the home fries and if they cannot, don't order if you have a sensitive stomach. TIP: If you are having take out do not have them butter the toast and ask them to wrap it up separately. I ended up with completely soggy toast, which was inedible. I should have buttered it at home, or they should have wrapped it. For 6.50 this is the least they can do. With that price, I consider it a bit on the pricey side but there is little competition in the area and they have some great reviews, They are friendly and polite, and the food is ready fast. In fact, if you are asking for take out make sure the food won't be ready before you get there---it doesn't enhance the taste. Their Almond smoothie is delicious and full of great stuff AND you can create your own. Absolutely delicious. Well run, clean, polite, innovative and talented chef. Just beware of spicy stuff. Love the take out option and the fast service. I have been about 12 times and always consistently polite and good food. read more

Well i was super excited about this place at first. The food was pretty good , staff pretty friendly and the coffee was from my favorite place. But time after time the service is just inexcusably slow. I thought maybe just overwhelmed from time to time since they were new to the industry. But zero upgrades to staff has clearly happened. Today i went in there and ordered 2 egg sandwiches and some "Crepes" . Literally not a single person in the store no orders ahead of ours and it took over 20 minutes to get that to the table. Went up to get a glass of water and it was empty. Wouldnt have had an issue but you could hear the two guys in the back just talking and see them standing there doing nothing. Ive been here 10 times now i would say so clearly the no rush laid back attitude is just a thing there. I worked in kitchens for 16 years.
