Nostalgia is about the only reason I can figure that people keep coming here. The food is unappetizing, unseasoned and uninteresting. Everything tastes extremely low budget at not so low budget pricing. And let's face it, when you come to a diner, you want good coffee. The Echo serves truly awful liquid coffee that's difficult to choke down even when you really need it. One bonus is that servers are friendly and kids are welcome. Given the location, this place could be so awesome. But it's definitely seen better days and is riding on past laurels. Hyde Park Square deserves a better effort. read more

This place was highly recommended by some folks but I honestly don't see why. If the food was as good as the service it would have been stellar. Our server was warm, friendly, and attentive. The food on the other hand...not so much. Eggs over medium that were served basically over hard, goetta was like chewing beef jerky. Potatoes were soaked in grease. Very, very good food! Unfortunately, the wait to get in is always so long but I think that speaks volumes for the quality of the food. If I can kept my little one entertained enough to get through the line, the service is awesome once we are seated. The waitresses are always so sweet and welcoming. One of the bussers passed out free Popsicles to the kids which was a huge hit. The goetta tastes great, eggs are cooked to perfection and the Rosemary multigrain bread is to die for. I'm from New York, where greasy-spoon diners are a dime a dozen. This place has very, very authentic and well-cooked diner food, but it is FAR overpriced. A bowl of oatmeal for $6? One egg with toast for $4? That's borderline ridiculous. The oatmeal was great (oatmeal with cinnamon, brown sugar, cooked apples, and raisins... yum!) but not worth the pricetag. It was delicious, but the next time I go there I will make sure it's a date where I'm not the one footing the bill. The one really awesome thing that totally surprised me was that you can get a to-go cup of coffee for no extra cost (if you ordered coffee with your meal, that is). That was really nice! read more

Bf's brother recommended we stop here on our way home from an overnighter at Riverbend Music Center. This place seems like a solid brunch spot and is in a cute area of Cincy I'm glad we were able to stop through. There were lots of options on the menu and this diner was bustling an hour or so before closing at 3. Luckily, we got a seat right away. Our table of 4 enjoyed a Portabella Mushroom Benedict, California Omelet (both from the seasonal menu), a breakfast sandwich and a German Greats platter (mine!). The Benedict ($9) looked great, eggs were poached nicely and lots of hollandaise to smother everything in. I was a little surprised at the California omelet ($9), it was loaded with tons (TONS) of bacon, avocado and chunks of cream cheese. Seemed kind of weird, but a hungry (read: hungover) bf scarfed it down. The breakfast sandwich looked pretty typical. My German Greats platter ($9) was pretty good. I opted for the Goetta, a type of sausage mixed with steel-cut oats. I thought it was German, but it turns out it's mostly a Cincinnati thing. Tasted pretty good with the baked apples on top of my rye toast. Overall, a little heavy for breakfast but no complaints! Toward the end of our meal service was kind of slacking a bit (no refills, slow on the check) but they both eventually came. Echo is a gem located very close to Hyde Park Square, making it a convenient stop before or after a trip to the farmers market. The waiting line to get a seat in the restaurant may seem a bit daunting, but the line moves quite quickly. Service is friendly and efficient. The menu contains the standard breakfast fare as well a seasonal specials and lunch fare (such as fried chicken). I love omelets at any time of day, and the omelets at Echo are done well. My mom is also a huge fan of their fried chicken, which I might try if I ever get over my omelet obsession. read more

Yes, this little old timey diner tucked into the side of Hyde Park square was where I had my first divine experience with the ultimate breakfast (tbh anytime) meat. I had my first little slice of heaven, and from there on out it was love. As a child I always ordered scrambled eggs, home fries, and goetta, but when I hit high school I started with mainstay: an oktoberfest omelet, homefries on the side and rye toast. To this day I order the same exact thing, and I don't know if that completely invalidates my review, but I think it just speaks true to how damn good the Echo is. Classic American diner style food at super reasonable prices! First of all, The Echo isn't a big restaurant so you might be waiting if you have a large group. With that said once you get a table service is quick and you can get all of your classic Americana style diner dishes served to you right away. We went in on a Saturday for lunch and didn't even have to wait more than five minutes. Our server was responsive and attentive to everything that we needed any special request that we had put in for our food. They even have a "clean" pen cup so that people can use a pen then put it in another cup so they can clean it for the next customer. Service here was on the slow side, even for a modestly busy weekday morning. We came here on a Sunday and this place was packed! Our large group had to be split up, which was fine by me as it meant my parents had to sit with my nephews.... Anyway, it took FOREVER for our food to come out. I know every seat in the house was taken, but omelets shouldn't take too long to cook. It was clear that my breakfast sandwich had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. The toast was totally dried out, and the cheese was clearly starting to re-harden. I'll start this off by saying my mom loves this place. I'm no all too sure why. I have been a few times, more often when I lived in Oakley / worked in Norwood, and I have never really enjoyed it. Located in Hyde Park Square, it seems a little plain for me. Definitely has that 1950s diner feel, but it doesn't feel cute or kitschy to me - just outdated. It reminds me of a restaurant out in the farm country my mom and grandma dragged me to as a kid - so maybe it is just bad association there. The food is diner food - it's nothing spectacular or interesting - but it doesn't taste bad. It's just bland - but probably a good stand by for normal, good food in the area. Eggs, sandwiches, and typical stuff. Sadly, I wasn't all that impressed with this place. I came here on Saturday morning and awkwardly waited in line with my sister and her toddler. At first I wondered if I was supposed to put my name in for a table since their wasn't a sign saying "Please Seat Yourself". I did eventually get the hint after watching the people in the front of the line watching for people leaving to pounce on a table. We waited for about 10 minutes, squeezing to the side in the extremely cramped entry way every time someone went to leave, before capturing a table of our own. The waitress was friendly and fast to wipe down the table and get our order. I got the egg and bacon sandwich which I felt was dry and nothing special. I also feel with just a little work the place could have an awesome vintage diner feel. Right now it just feels a little old and tired. And if it's not clear by the small amount of available parking, the busy crowds and sometimes average service, that this place can get pretty full-up. Like a good deal of other reviewers have said, this place is pricey for what you get. Oatmeal and eggs shouldn't cost that much. Especially when everything -food included- was just average. The service, the atmosphere, the portions. There were no glaring criticisms of the the restaurant I can think of, yet no reasons that this establishment stands out among all of the other options you have for breakfast as anything special. This is the true diner experience. From it's booths to it's counter right next to the waitresses, when you're inside here you feel like you're at an old-school diner. I've been here a few times for both lunch and dinner and I can say that the experiences are quite drastic. For lunch their meals are pretty decent. Nothing really to write home about. Solid breakfast foods. I have had the Hot Mess, which is just a lot of different breakfast foods with gravy, and the Flying Pig Sandwich, which is french toast with with a couple of meats stuffed inside and served with syrup. Both were looked interesting to me and tasted great. Sides were about what you'd expect. Not bad, not spectacular, just there. Dinner is a different story. Maybe it's just that this place does not really cater well to a dinner setting. But for some reason the entrees did not seem as good. I had the roast beef on one occasion and the baked cod on another. The roast beef was alright but it seemed a little too fatty and the gravy wasn't as hot as I'd like it. On the other occasion, I had the baked cod because they ran out of some other entrees. The baked cod seemed like it came out of a frozen dinner as the fish was not very flakey and really did not have the fresh taste and texture I kind of hoped for. As a whole, come here and stick to their breakfast foods. Breakfast, lunch or dinner just get their breakfast foods and you should be fine. read more

Great restaurant. A nice touch of blue collar in Hyde Park. It's above average diner food. The ingredients are fresh, some local, which is nice, and there are some pretty inventive items. One of my favorites is the Oktoberfest Omelet. I haven't worked up the nerve (and haven't been hungover enough yet) to try the Hot Mess, but it's one of those kitchen sink on a plate dishes that sounds gut-bustingly delicious or revolting, depending on your perspective. I love Echo's hominess. Yes, it can be busy on the weekends, but the wait is never longer than 10-15 minutes. Service has always been great, and the food, while not special, is consistent and good. I love the Victory Garden omelet (fall special), or the Hyde Parker in other seasons. But my favorite (especially when really hungry and/or hungover) is the Flying Pig. We found ourselves at the Echo early this past Saturday evening after learning that there would be an hour + wait at Arthur's, where we had agreed to meet for my MIL's birthday. A lifelong Hyde Park resident, she suggested The Echo--we had 3 children aged 3 to 8 with us, had found parking and were sufficiently hungry--too hungry to stand on the street corner lamenting, with three kiddo's and trying to all agree on the same "other" place. The Echo seemed to have some occupancy, so we all went inside. The menu is standard diner/cafeteria fare and that's a-ok by me. There is a weird happening with me, though, that when I get into these types of places, I immediately want to order cottage cheese. I refrained...I did order the Echo melt, ham, swiss, tomato, mayo etc...and potato cakes for my side--yum. Since you can get breakfast all day, my little one wanted pancakes and bacon. We both belonged to the clean plate club--you can't go wrong with simple. Our server was really kind, efficient and good with the kids--their food came out a little a head of ours (smart!). The bill came--$12.00. I ask you, where on Hyde Park Square can 2 people eat a meal for twelve bucks? I will happily go back to The Echo if the occasion arises. read more

Overall, I thought this place was good but nothing really special. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. I tried the hot mess platter, which is basically a pile of potatoes, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy, and cheese. I have no complaints about it, it was just a good, basic dish! My friend tried Steph's Sampler and found it was good as well. But again, nothing special. The major complaint I do have with this place is how cramped it is. The layout of the restaurant is not very efficient, with two diner-style counters running parallel to each other right through the middle of the small dining space. This doesn't leave much room to walk between the tables. My friend and I were seated at a table close to the cashier counter, so entire time we were there, the long line of people waiting to pay ran right next to our table. I'm talking random people's butts within 3 feet of my face! Then there were servers trying to squeeze around those people, bumping our table or brushing our arms in the process. We were there around noon on a Saturday, so maybe this isn't such a problem when they're less busy. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if you're in the area and looking for a good diner-food brunch spot, this is the place to come! read more

I guess I was kind of wondering what all the hype was about. At first, it was super awkward because my sister and I weren't sure if we were supposed to give our name or something, so she went ahead into the place while I stayed behind with my baby at the end of the waiting people. She quickly realized that we were just supposed to wait, so she headed back to me. The line went out the door (there's no place to wait inside, so it was really just 2 small groups ahead of us). It moved quickly - we probably didn't wait any more than 10 minutes for a table. It's a pretty small place, but the buzz of activity gives it a nice vibe. It didn't seem very clean but that could have been just because all of the booths were pretty old. The walls were kind of bare; it could use a little bit of design to give it more of a retro feel. There was some neon and a wrap-around counter people could sit at in addition to the booths on the sides of the place, but mostly the place just feels old (and a little unloved?). There was no sign proclaiming "Please Seat Yourself", but it was obvious after a few minutes, that's what we were intended to do as we watched the groups in front of us quickly claim the tables vacated by now-satisfied diners. There were obviously no high chairs so luckily we got a booth, which my daughter could easily sit at. I ordered an omelette with grilled onions, sausage and green peppers. It was really good! There was a side of toast (I got rye) and a choice of skillet potatoes or some other stuff I don't remember. I got the potato pancakes which were really good, but seemed like they came ready-made and frozen? I mean it IS a diner. I'm not complaining. My sister got a breakfast sandwich and the skillet potatoes. My almost 2 year old daughter got a kids meal of 2 eggs and 2 sausage links, which she ate most of! Also a side of wheat toast, which she had one bite of and my sister and I helped with the rest of ;-) As busy as they were, the waitress did not make us feel rushed. Which I think is a real plus.
