Absolutely 100% disappointing experience all the way around. We had tickets for a show at The Palace theatre this past Tuesday night and I made these reservations for 2 people two weeks in advance. I made them for 5 p.m. so we could enjoy dinner and drinks before the show. We entered the admittedely, absolutely stunning building and were led through the bar, which had a couple of tables seated and a handful of people at the bar, to the back to the empty dining room...and were seated right outside the service doors to the kitchen. We asked to change our table and the unsmiling host accomodated us and seated us at a table in the bar area. Our server came over, introduced herself, took our drink order and did everything but bring them to us for about 25 minutes. We could see them on the bar but she walked past them repeatedly. We placed our order and after a surprisingly short time, received not only and incorrect order, but the most disappointing plates of food for $40 we have ever been served. I ordered the dish called short ribs and described as this, "beer braise, horseradish mashed potato, chef's vegetable, caramelized onion, double bock demi-glace". As shown in the picture, I received a plate with a tough chunk of what seemed to be chuck roast gristle with bits of meat clinging to it, acidic, incredibly sour mashed potatoes and the chef's vegetable which was barely steamed broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. They weren't even warm, they were so undercooked. No seasoning at all. We let our server know that the other dish was incorrect, she insisted we ordered the fillet, which is not an item on the menu, but it didn't matter because she was holding a plate containing a ribeye, along with the same sides. After reluctantly agreeing to replace it, she left the other dish sitting on the table, apparently expecting me to go ahead and eat it while my date watched. She ended up bringing back the proper dish but the sauce, described as "bacon red pepper relish, double bock demi-glacé", was plain brown grave with flat pieces of charred onions or something in it. The entire meal was indeble and while our server was surprised we did not eat and did not want doggy bags, she wished us a good evening and we didn't see her again. Plenty of staff saw our barely touched plates, including what I believe was the manager, and no one said a word. We did notice the absolute lack of joy or smiles on any employees' faces, including the bartender and I guess after reading the other reviews, they must be as miserable as we were. After the show, we went to Kelly's Bar on Henderson Rd. formerly DiArinis and had epic burgers, fries and collard greens thanks to Ridiculous Eatz, which I will go review now. The food was good! But I don't see Elevator brewing being around for much longer unless if they tweak their service. On a Saturday night, they were very understaffed. I was surprised to see it so busy, but that also meant a lot of work for their staff. Most of the tables didn't have food when we walked in. Our server took our order without writing anything down. I am NOT a fan when people do this. Some of the drinks were then messed up. Since he was busy - it took awhile for him to come back so we could let him know something was wrong. I ordered the almond chicken salad and actually LOVED it. The dressing was amazing and so sweet. I will 100% be ordering that salad for takeout. The cook your own steak thing has been Elevators thing for decades. The workers come and explain how to do it as well. The side of veggies that came with the steak was pretty darn sad. Frozen and small. The steak itself was fine, but not very seasoned as it comes with no seasoning. The place has potential, but it's showing its age throughout. There is a lack of parking, and when we called and asked where we could park, they hostess just said "Yeah we have that issue with people having trouble". We went here after a wedding rehearsal for dinner. We had a party of 28 people. The restaurant had a nice cheese and fruit plate, vegetables plate, and shrimp plate for us. The kids played pool while the adults drink orders were taken. Staff was very friendly and we got excellent service. I had Cajun chicken penne, wonderful sauce a little spicy, lots of red pepper, would have like to have a bit more chicken. Richelle had the shrimp and grits, sweet, rich and creamy. We shared and we both though both plates were very good. I wish they would serve bread with the entrée. There are at least a dozen of beers to choose from and not all are IPA's like at some places. Cool place...love the look, layout and vibe. We just stopped in for some cocktails and desserts. The creme brulee and the Buckeye brownie were good and the drinks were nice. The service was friendly but a little scattered (asked three times but never got any water until we went up to the bar to request it ourselves, served food without any silverware and then was given a fork to eat the creme brulee). I was so excited to try Elevator but I was disappointed in the food. The space is amazing and beautiful and our service was good. We took our kids here on a Tuesday night and it was very appropriate. The place wasn't too busy and accommodating for kids. They have a decent kids menu and mine chose the Penne with White Cheddar Sauce. It was delicious and amazing Mac and Cheese. However, I ordered the Almond Crusted Chicken Salad and my chicken was dry and didn't have much flavor. It also tasted burnt. Overall the salad was tasty but the chicken was meh. My husband ordered the Honey Habanero Chicken Sandwich and his chicken was the same. His fries were delicious. We also ordered a Wedge salad which wasn't bad but nothing out of the norm. Overall, I enjoyed the few bites of my kids meal the best and that's why I gave 3 stars. For the price we paid for our dinner, the shining dish shouldn't be my 4 year old's Mac and Cheese. read more

We stopped by Elevator before an event at Nationwide Arena. The restaurant is really interesting architecturally and they have a nice wood bar and 1920s Art Deco stained glass windows. We got seated at a comically small table. Since time was of the essence due to our event, I only ordered the burger, which came with a choice of cheese and bacon and fries. The fries were solid, though my burger was really dry. I specified medium for my fineness and it was a mile past well done. The bun was stale and dry (almost like a crouton that had been sitting under a heat lamp). My boyfriend, however, was reasonably happy with his poutine. Service was on the slower side and prices were moderate-high. Elevator does have a large beer and cocktail menu and their food menu is pretty big, so those are some pluses, but the burger wasn't spectacular. read more

I'm just here for the root beer. I'd heard they made their own, as breweries often do, and finally made it down here. If I'd had more time I would have tried their beers and food, as both looked great. But a quick stop for a sip of craft root beer had to do. The place is old and full of character, has been a bar for ages, and is dark, warm, and welcoming. Service was excellent from the hostesses and bartender. He turned out to be the person who makes the root beer, so we talked about that, and other beverages. I would gladly have stayed for lunch if I'd had time. The root beer was excellent. Nicely balanced flavors, a hint of wintergreen but nothing overwhelming. Reasonably priced, refreshing. You can get it in a cocktail with Jagermeister, and they make other craft sodas for cocktails. I'll be back, to try the food and harder drinks. A very pleasant experience, and I wish I'd gotten here sooner. It's a Columbus classic. read more

I came for Happy Hour with friends around 4 on a Friday. They don't have a parking lot, so I parked in a lot nearby for $7. There were a handful of people by the bar, but as we sat until close to 6, more people came in. Mostly older adults. I did see a few young adults come in though. It's a huge space! High ceilings with huge frames of artwork and different light fixtures. I love how historical it looks. The wall features are interesting. We ordered a few apps, which were $2 off. We got calamari, pork belly, and sauerkraut balls. We also got two items off the side menu: French fries and Brussels sprouts. The calamari was fantastic! It had a sweet chili type of sauce on it. The pork belly was also very good! Flavorful and so tender! Almost melt in your mouth. The sauerkraut balls were nothing spectacular. The ones at Barley's are so much better. The fries were decent and the Brussel sprouts were just okay. It had bacon in it and some kind of sauce on it. We also shared a sampler of 6 beers. We got a stout, Dirty Dick's Brown Ale, Horny Frog, Elevator Xtra, Pale Ale 2.0, and Bleeding Buckeye Red Ale. The Horny Frog was my favorite even though I wasn't into most of them. I'm not a beer drinker really. Service was fantastic! Our server was personable, smiley, and told us about some of her favorite beers. Solid downtown Columbus eatery. I work in the area, and it's a go-to when I want to get away from the office. Staff is always great! The dishes are consistent. My favorites are the Sauerkraut Balls, Crab Cakes, Mac and Cheese, Filet Medallions and the Thai Beef Tenderloin Salad. I recently tried the Almond Crusted Chicken Salad, and didn't really get the feels I get with the other flavorful selections. I enjoyed the honey mustard sauce on the chicken, but the vinaigrette seemed to be flat. Needed more acidity/punch to balance the sweetness. I ended up squeezing the lemon from my water for a kick. Burger with red pepper-bacon relish, bleu cheese, balsamic aioli, and arugula on brioche. This burger is bursting with flavor! I loved the pepper and bacon relish along with the blue cheese. That really made the flavors pop. The burger was juicy and the bun was excellent. We ordered 1 side of fries for the table. They were tasty like fair frys but a little darker than I would have liked. I think the oil in the fryer just needed to be changed. The whole evening was amazing. We started off with some appetizers & drinks. Sauerkraut balls - very tasty. The mustard dipping sauce was a little over the top on the spice level Potstickers - very nice. The sauce was delicious and the peanut topping was great. Hummus plate - the hummus was really smooth. There was a whole red pepper just cut in thirds. I would have liked that sliced more for sharing. Drinks: a bottle of Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon - an absolutely fantastic wine. Mandarin Ginger old-fashioned - super tasty. Loved that ginger taste. We finished off the evening with a Buckeye Brownie - warm chocolate brownie, Johnson's Peanut Butter Buckeye Blitz Ice Cream, whipped cream, nut brown ale chocolate sauce. Wow! I was here on a work trip and one of our local colleagues suggested this place. We were staying at the Sheraton downtown and decided to take a nice walk here. This is a cool place to hang out with coworkers or friends. The food is okay, not that great but there's a wide selection of drinks and it has a laid back atmosphere. We came around 4 so it wasn't too busy yet and got seated right away. This place has been around for a while I think since the late 1800's or early 1900's and kept a lot of its charm. It's got beautiful stained glass portraits and lots of detailed moulding. It's also very big! The first room has seats and the bar, there's a patio area on the side, and more seating with a pool table in the back. The have a wide selection of beers. My boss got a flight to try a few different ones. He said the hef was the best and he's usually an IPA guy. We ordered the mussels and calamari as appetizers. The bread dipped in the mussel sauce was so good! I was hoping the dish came out hotter it was only luke warm. The bread had a nice crispy top with a soft center. The calamari was just like any other calamari. Fried and drizzled in sriracha and had a veggie mix in the middle to give it that crunchy texture. As for main dishes, I got the strip dinner, my boss got the tuna brûlée and our friend got the medallions. Strip dinner - comes with steak, fried onions, bacon wrapped asparagus, and au gratin at the bottom with it looked like a chimichurri sauce. I ordered a medium but the steak was tough and over cooked. The steak was okay with the sauce, fried onions and asparagus. The au gratin was not good. It had a wierd bitter type flavor to it. I think for the price, I wouldn't order this dish again Tuna brûlée - the boss said it was good. OH how I wish we had a place like this in Pittsburgh!! I am not a huge brew beer fan as I once was when a was a Manager at John Harvard's Brewhouse, but this place was Wonderful!! A solid meal in downtown Columbus. This review is for food only. I passed on alcohol since I was headed to breweries after dinner. The Crab Stuffed Scallops meal was delicious. Stuffing scallops with crab was a delicious combination. The seafood was well prepared with a delicious mustard sauce. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were good and made for plenty of food. The texture of the calamari was a little rubbery but doable. My BFF couldn't find anything for a lite snack. So we asked if they would load her some fries. I've come to Elevator for lunch several times since it is close to work and can accommodate large parties. Over time, I've found it to be more and more mediocre. Two things I've ordered are the cajun chicken penne and the Elevator mac and cheese. The cajun chicken penne has a good kick to it which I like, and the chicken is nice and not very dry, but the cream sauce feels extremely greasy. I thought it may have been a one-time thing so I tried it again, and the second time was the same. Unfortunately, it is also extremely greasy. The braised beef in the mac was actually delicious, but every other bite in the dish felt so heavy. It's a shame they can do their toppings right but then oversaturate their sauces with grease. My coworkers do seem to enjoy the almond crusted chicken salad, which seems to be more of chicken with salad than salad with chicken. The building itself is actually very unique and I do appreciate that. The ceilings, decor, and overall vibes are great. Service is average from my experiences. In town for a work conference, and my Director hyped up the Rock Surf and Turf. So, after a long day of sessions a group of us decided to have dinner here. The atmosphere is cute, and the service was really good. Since he had hyped up this dish so much, I decided to get it. I will just say that it was just okay. They brought out the filet, shrimp and scallops on a rock that had been pre-heated to hot temperatures. I was disappointed in the fact that they did not have the food already preseasoned, nor did they bring any seasonings out for me to add on it. My rock did not stay hot enough to cook all of my food, so I had to use my co-workers rock. So, pretty much I paid $33 to cook my own food, and it wasn't as good as I would have wanted it to be. My Director even stated that he has had that dish there at least 7 times and it has definitely been better. So, maybe I came on a bad night. read more

The stained glass, the big beautiful bar, lots of art and details make the restaurant feel special. Unfortunately, that's the only thing I liked about it. The beer selection is pretty limited for a brewery, and they were out of their two lighter, non-IPA brews. I had the fish and chips. The fish was dry and flavorless. The fries were floppy. The sauces sounded really promising, but fell flat in taste. My husband ordered the beef medallions which were super thin and also dry. He did like the mashed potatoes though. I was wandering up and down the street looking for a place to grab lunch. The Elevator didn't have rave reviews, but it was in the right place at the right time, so I wandered in. It was about 1:00 on a Tuesday and there was only one person at the bar, that concerned me. I sidled up to the bar and started to chat with the super friendly bartender. He explained the beer menu (they also have wine and a full bar) and the different styles. I chose to go with their lightest beer, as I was still feeling it from the night before. The beer was crisp and effervescent, plus it really helped the hangover. For lunch I kept it simple with their house salad and a bowl of their soup of the day, Tomato and Artichoke Bisque. The soup was seriously fantastic and so unique! The salad was good too, the nuts had a sweet and spicy blend on them and the vinaigrette was tangy and tasty. The decor and the layout of the building is historic and detailed - it was really beautiful and 'antiquey'. I got there about an hour before close on a Tuesday so the place was pretty dead. I wanted to get my food order in right away since I was there late. I thought soup and salad was simple so I went with the Chicken Tortilla soup and the Almond Chicken salad. When I ordered the bartender told me that the Almond Chicken Salad was one of the most popular lunch items. I didn't put two and two together that a soup with that salad might be too much. After I ordered the food I looked over the beer list. If there's a nitro stout I will order that 100% of the time. I asked the bartender if that was the case for their one nitro tap they had but for whatever reason nothing was on nitro. The stout they had was a plum nitro. I thought I'd give it a shot. It seemed a little tart so I didn't like it but I have to give them credit; it tasted like plum. I prefer a more nutty/coffee stout so it wasn't my favorite but shame on me for not taking it for pretty much what the description said. The soup was pretty good. It had a little spice to it but noting crazy. The chicken salad was pretty good too. I wish I didn't fill up on the soup so I could have finished off more of the salad. Wow! Great food, great service! Not easy to find parking if you're coming from somewhere else. I came in with a group from work, and took pictures of everyone's lunch! We got a couple of appetizers: the pork belly was fantastic. I could have eaten just that and been satisfied! The sauerkraut balls were also very good. We shared the sage gnocchi and brisket Mac and cheese: both were good. The sage gnocchi is probably what I would order if I went back. Very creamy. I loved the balsamic glaze over the whole plate. So good. The Mac and cheese was a bit spicy even avoiding the jalapeños. My pot roast philly sandwich was tasty, too. It was so hard to choose something from the menu because so many options jumped out at me! I loved the art on the walls: very large paintings. We were a party of 11 that arrived at 5:00pm on a Saturday. Our table was ready when we got there. We were offered waters fairly quickly. Our waiter took our beer order. I had a few questions that were answered, but he interrupted me a few times. I didn't think much of that at this time. For only having a few tables seated in the restaurant and about half the bar full, our beer took longer than usual. After about 30+ minutes, he took our order. He interrupted me when I had a question again. Note that the online menu from their website is not necessarily the current menu (which is what I had a question about ). Not a big inconvenience, but kind a bummer. That's when the wait started. Our appetizers were slow bur not extraordinarily so. The hummus was very good. I didn't care for the sauerkraut balls, but that's personal preference. The long and short of it, a few minutes after 7:00 pm, we finally got our meals. The food was good. Not outstanding. Not bad. Just, mediocre good. My tuna had good flavor but was dry in the middle. The carrots (5 carrots slices, more of a condiment than a side) were swimming in an overly sweet sauce that didn't mesh well with the lemon sauce for the tuna. The risotto cake was bland. At one point, our waiter was standing and casually chatting and laughing with other staff, while we were waiting. After finishing my first beer, I wanted to try another; and he was nowhere to be found. I almost walked to the bar to get my own. The delay in food was blamed on a printer issue. He told us our ticket didn't get printed. (Odd, all other tables coming in that ordered about the same time got their meals long before us.) He did apologize and said dessert was on the house. One dessert. For 11 of us. Ok, I never expect anything free, but it was just odd to offer one dessert for a whole party that had been inconvenienced. Paying $78 for 3 beers and 2 okay tuna dinners will cause us to find somewhere else next time we're in the area. Now, I will say the building is extremely cool. They've done a great job maintaining a very interesting old building. I would sooner return here for a drink at the bar before getting dinner somewhere else. read more
