SHADY AF of a place! Made an appointment and when I showed up I thought the store was closed because its was DARK and there was NO ONE in the store. They seemed surprised that they had a customer. The young woman who did the intake couldn't be less friendly if she tried. Made it feel as if she was doing me a favor by handing me a form to fill out. After I filled everything out THEN they decide to tell me that I wouldn't be seen by a doctor in person but would do the exam remotely and if there was a problem they would refer me to another doctor. They claimed they called me to let me know this (they didn't, they called to confirm the appointment though), they claimed it was on their website (I can't seem to find it now) when I said I wanted to do the exam face to face. I walked out pissed that my time was wasted and I spent 15 minutes in there longer than I should have. Stay away! read more

I needed some sunglasses for my upcoming trip to Europe and stumbled across this cool little glasses shop in the Upper West Side. I was greeted warmly as soon as I stepped in and the worker immediately began asking questions about what I wanted and was very helpful. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, I just knew I wanted sunglasses so I wasn't very helpful in helping the worker find the right sunglasses for me. Despite that, the worker was very patient and worked with me until I found the perfect pair! I would give 0 stars if I could. We spent like 2 hours there getting an eye exam for my husband and selecting glasses for him and my son, and they forgot to take a measurement they needed. That meant we had to go back the following weekend to get the measurement. They had said the glasses would be ready in 5-10 days, but for my son it took a month (!!!), and for my husband, 6 weeks (!!!!!!!!). Even worse, my son's glasses were way too big for him--the strap in the back wasn't early enough to keep them on. We're going elsewhere to get him a new pair. DO NOT COME HERE!!! This place is a scam. There is NO LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL ONSITE! Just walked out of the worst eye doctor experience of my life. This place uses equipment with AI then will have you FaceTime with a random person who doesn't even introduce themselves to "complete the exam". The two employees onsite were not able to provide me their titles and told me they have no medical professional backgrounds or licensing. One of the employees told "I don't have a title I just help out here". That same employee that did my exams did not once sterilized the machines, he had absolutely no idea how to use the equipment, kept pushing the machine uncomfortably close to me. They told me the "doctor" only comes in one day a week and refused to let me speak to anyone with a license associated with this place. Worst experience ever please stay away. After decades of excellent service, there is a new owner whose priorities don't seem to be the customers. We had a problem which we tried to fix while on vacation and were scolded for not contacting the store directly and immediately when the problem arose. If I could rate this less than 1 star, I would. I have lived on the UWS for years and have always bought my glasses at The Eye Man. This store has changed hands, and suffice to say, it ain't the same. I always valued the family-owned, service-oriented culture, and historically have been willing to pay up. No more. I recently replaced the lenses in my glasses. The lenses quickly began to deteriorate around the edges, and getting The Eye Man to act has been a nightmare. I brought my glasses in weeks ago and I may as well have dropped them into the abyss. Whoever answers the phone is curt and dismissive -- and today, I was left on hold for 15 minutes! Finally, I got the owner/manager on the phone and she kept punting the issues to "the lab." Meanwhile, I have been without my glasses for several weeks, with no idea when I am getting them back. It always astonishes me when businesses treat decades-long customer relationships was disposable. Such a shame because this place was one of the gems of the UWS. No more. read more

Support a local business. The Eye Man may be a bit more pricey then some other spots, but they are a family-owned local business that has been on the UWS for years. They have a great selection of frames - both traditional and funky. The staff is friendly and treats everyone like a regular. If they dont have the color of something you want, they will order it. They fit the glasses to your face and everything is done timely and professionally. While some have mentioned an ill-mannered woman working there, once you have gone there a few times, you'll see she's not. She can just be rough around the edges at once, but really is just a sweetheart. read more

I went in with my daughter today and overheard two staff there pressuring an elderly woman to spend almost a thousand dollars on glasses, while another woman with some kind of developmental disability was almost in tears because a third staff member was bullying her and refusing to give her some piece of information about her prescription she needed--"It's not for you. You can't have it." We were fine and got what we were there for, but these people prey on the vulnerable. And, frankly, their prices are exorbitant for what you get. Stay away. read more

I am relatively new to the neighborhood and so glad to discover this eye glasses store. Heather was extremely patient, knowledgeable, hands-on and overall just a pleasure to work with. I always think these little stores and small businesses are what make our neighborhoods great. These local businesses are not only convenient, but also give our blocks their characters and fun! I so appreciate Eye Man and the service Heather provided. They also have a small vintage collection of Oliver People sunglasses - very charming (for exhibition, not sale), which shows great taste of the owner in selecting frames and it makes the waiting time interesting. I've passed this shop many times since moving to the neighborhood, and thought I would try it since my former optician has closed. Today was my first visit to The Eye Man. Also my last. I called in advance to say I had a prescription from my opthalmologist for progressives, and asked if I needed an appointment. The young lady on the phone said, no, come on over. So I did. A woman who was helping another customer did not look up when I came in; that's understandable, she was busy. A gentleman standing directly facing the door looked straight at me, looked away, and went on doing whatever he was doing with a piece of paper. The only person in the store who bothered to notice that I was there was another client sitting at the back of the store waiting her turn. I stood there for several minutes, feeling invisible, and eventually lwalked out. Found another optician several blocks away where I was welcomed even though they were busy, and ordered my $600 glasses. Really, the staff at The Eye Man needs lessons in general politeness as part of customer service. read more

In this city, you walk down the block and come across dozens of opticals. It's hard to discern the good ones from the bad ones until you try...and I am so glad that I stumbled upon The Eye Man on 81st St & Broadway. I desperately needed a new pair of glasses. Of the twenty years I have been wearing glasses, I can honestly say I don't think anyone has ever gotten my prescription right. But voila! Much to my astonishment, the people at The Eye Man nailed it. From the eye doctor to the sales associates who selected my frames, everything was perfect. The customer service is top notch. They have such a funky, fun selection of glasses and the optician really takes the time to work with you. My vision has never been this sharp and all my friends compliment me on my frames. Oh, and the best part is the jelly bean dispenser with the best gourmet jelly beans! read more

NYC DOE TEACHERS BEWARE!!! Long review, but gives you a good idea of what kind of business the Eyeman runs... I wish I could give them ZERO stars. As a New York City public school teacher, my optical services are covered under the UFT Welfare Fund, which the Eyeman is supposed to accept and adhere to the contract terms because they sign a contract! However, they do not and will not.... On 6/21/11 I went in for an eye exam with Dr. Leong, who was pleasant, but it wasn't the most thorough exam I have received. As soon as the staff in front found out I was covered under the UFT Welfare Fund (which they are supposed to accept), I was left to my own devices searching for glasses for at least 20 min. until one of the 3 employees (who were all idling) decided to help me. This is a very small store! After I picked a pair of frames, the employee who sat down to ring up my order told me that though they "accept" my UFT insurance, they don't follow the billing formula they are supposed to, but only take off a flat rate. (Thereby, overcharging me!) I didn't have my UFT insurance booklet with me so I didn't know whether they are permitted to do this. I left a small deposit for my order and called the UFT the next day.... I found out that any participating UFT optician has to: a. following the billing formula (The Eyeman overcharged me by over $150 because they didn't). b. charge me their regular prices for lenses and the discount price for coatings (The Eyeman charged me $225 for lenses they usually charge only $125). On 6/24/2011... I went to pick up the frames and speak to the owner about the billing issue. I assumed that they would want to correct it. Well, they didn't... When I asked to speak to the owner, he refused to come out and talk to me. Instead, he hid behind a partition in the store and another employee relayed messages. They refused to correct the billing issue, gave me my deposit back, and told me to "complain to my UFT insurance if it made me feel better". Opticians are a dime a dozen on the Upper West Side. Try Pildes or the Eye Q Optometrist. When you are spending several hundred dollars on a service, you deserve a smile, thank you, and apology, if necessary. The Eyeman has no concept of customer service. Go elsewhere!!!! read more

My husband and i have been buying glasses from Hedda for nearly two decades. Today, my sister was in town, and wanted some sunglasses. We told her there was only one place we would consider taking her, and we told her exactly what would happen: within the first two pairs, Hedda would find ones that looked incredible on her. And then she'd keep finding more options for her until we were all convinced that there was no better choice in the shop. That was EXACTLY what happened. Hedda found her a pair that she loved and that was in her price range, and then spent 20 minutes showing her other options. When my sister had chosen the pair she wanted, Hedda spent extra time fitting the glasses to her face to make sure she'd be comfortable when she walked out. My sister was thrilled with the purchase, and with the whole experience. Did I mention, she ended up buying the first pair she tried on? We always have a blast shopping with Hedda, and we always refer our friends there. The Eye Man is a quirky, old-school Upper West Side joint. The people who work there are characters, but they totally know their stuff, and they will always go the extra mile for you. I would never go anywhere else! read more

I walked in because I was looking for a new pair of glasses and I was welcomed by an ill-tempered older woman with an attitude. She would not let me browse the glasses without her standing right next to me. She asked me if I had my prescription and I told her I could have my prescription sent over if I found a pair of frames I liked. She then told me she didn't want me setting aside the frames I liked and that she was putting them back in the case. I told her I would leave and she said "good, thank you." I went to the Eye Man for a driver's license eye exam, which took 2 minutes. The woman, who did the test told me that my eyesight was so bad, that I barely made it (40/50). Quickly I scheduled an eye exam with my regular ophthalmologist who told me that the test result of the Eye Man was incorrect and that my eyesight is 20/30. I called the Eye Man and told them about this "oversight" (pardon the pun), but they showed no remorse. read more

I had a sudden need for reading glasses while evacuated during hurricane Sandy and these folks hustled like mad to make it happen for me post haste and to get me the forms to have my insurance cover it. Now I have a temporary need for regular glasses and again, fast and spot on, they delivered. While in the shop, you can see that every person who comes or calls in has an urgent need to get a replacement or get their glasses fixed or get their new prescription or frames and they accommodate everyone -- I guess it is the nature of the business that every job is a rush and if some small percentage are not satisfied, they are the most vocal. The shop has always been busy when I have been there, so I guess that is a sign of their success in making many people happy with their products and services. I am one of those very happy customers and they have earned my loyalty. read more

Our toddler was diagnosed as farsighted and needed glasses quickly. The ophthalmologist gave us a list of business on the UWS where we could get children's glasses fitted and the Eye Man was on the list and the doctor said they were good with kids. We went there on a Wednesday and Ellen helped us. She was super patient with our child and helped us pick a great pair. I also needed new glasses so she helped me as well. My older pair were 2 years old and I had never been happy with the way they fit, and Ellen showed me why. She picked several frames for me to try and I liked most of them. I told Ellen that there was no rush with my glasses since I have my old pair plus contacts, but please rush my child's. Friday morning Ellen called and said the glasses were ready! BOTH pairs - mine, too! We picked them up that afternoon and couldn't be happier. Ellen adjusted each pair and had us try them on until we were content and our child is wearing the glasses all the time b/c they are so comfortable. I am happy with mine as well. read more

I have shopped at The Eye Man since the early 90's. I have been helped by a number of the staff over the years, but if she's present I *always* choose to work with Hedda. I've worn glasses since the second grade, and Hedda is the best person I've ever known at matching frames to faces. She's also extremely opinionated, very funny and extremely caring. I have never entered nor left the shop without a hug and a kiss. In other words, she's a true New Yorker. An observation I have is that the shop is not set up for shoppers to browse on their own. It's set up for someone to consult with you and to help you find what you desire, in whatever style and at whatever price point you wish. If you come into the store and simply explain what your goals are, I have seen that people receive terrific, personal, and not-at-all-pushy service. read more
