Well, there is, of course, but still.... I knew zero people here, so I was glad to learn that O'Reilly Auto Parts recommends mechanics, which is how I found these good people. I embarrassed myself (story of my life) by letting them know I was pretty sure it was the starter when they found it was, actually, the battery. I requested services for suspected suspension problems and brake replacement. This was a second opinion and the repairs they thought were needed were fewer and therefore cheaper than the first shop I went to for diagnostics. I love that they have the option to text instead of call and they send you a link with the estimated services so you can take a moment to think over your options with all of the details in front of you instead of scrambling to take notes. It was about a week before they could get my car in for an appointment and then a few days to make the repairs. When I went to pick my car up, I overheard the guy at the desk talking with an elderly woman about possible problems with her car. She hadn't set up an appointment yet, but they were kind enough to chat with her to give her an idea of their suspicions based on her description. I have an old car that's in really good condition but most shops won't touch my 1992 car because they don't have the diagnostic tools. These guys listened to my car problem and told me they knew how to find the issue. They found the issue. They communicated the issue and cost to me. They gave me an estimate of the time it would take. Then they fixed an engine problem my Hales Corners Chevy dealership could not! I can say they lived up to all my expectations - customer service, accuracy on estimate, and doing a good job on the repair. Cars repaired were a 2000 Toyota Tundra for O2 sensors and a 2005 Toyota Camry for breaks and exhaust flex pipe. Came here back in May because a fuel pump issue. It's not my usual shop but my car wouldn't start so I didn't have a choice. From asking around, I was expecting it to cost in the neighborhood of $500 maybe a little more. These guys called and told me it would be almost 1,500. I was shocked at first but needed the car to start so I gave the green light. I called the shop I always went to growing up (Wilmot Auto in Wilmot, WI) and others and they all told me that was absurd. Called Family Mechanic back and asked to see the receipt for the fuel pump they ordered for my car or for any information on it and they refused. I then asked them to stop working on my car. I was going to get it towed somewhere else. THEN, I get a call from the owner who has a story about "oh I saw what my guys were doing and they were trying just give you a high-end part." Or the best part something like that. Miraculously by the end of that call $400 had fallen off my bill but it was still $1000 which according to everyone I asked was too much for my car. I got an OEM part and found out later I still could've asked for a generic one. Not a car guy and relatively inexperienced with maintenance but lesson learned. My normal place in the area is called Bay View Service and I would sincerely recommend you take your business there rather than this place. I can't say BVS is always the cheapest but they've always been 100% transparent with me about my options and the pros and cons of each. I'm really busy so it took me a while to finally write this review of probably the shadiest experience I've ever had but I have been and will continue to tell as many people as I can to avoid this shop. read more

I brought two cars in with issues. Before I brought them here I took them to Andrew's Toyota. Andrew's Toyota diagnosed one with a bad AC compressor ($1050 fix), the other car with a shorted wheel bearing that required a wheel hub remove and replace ($1200). The Family mechanic (TFM) diagnosed my cars with thr same problem. So to both of their credit they appear to be honest. That is my most important quality in a mechanic. Price wise TFM price for the AC compressor was like $50 more but my car was already there so I had them do it and it works great. The hub replacement at TFM was only $600 compared to $1200, not sure why it so expensive at Andrew's. This was a no brainer. As with my other car this one is running great. Professions I trust the least are dentists and mechanics. I've heard great things from TFM which is why I took it here, and I was not disappointed. I hope TFM becomes my David Puddy. read more

How has Eli and the Family Mechanic not made it onto Yelp yet? I have been going here since Eli relocated the shop over to Holt from 2nd and have not had a complaint since. The prices are fair and his expertise in outstanding. Here are two examples of how Eli and his guys go above and beyond. I like new cars. I don't like taking my car to the dealership. Eli can take care of my new car just like the dealership. A warranty item came up that I took to Eli to repair, but the dealership would do it for free. Eli got it over there and back so I didn't have to. He didn't have to do this for me and I would have completely understood. My tire got a slow leak on it, to the point I could drive home, but not get to my garage to the shop. I called and asked if he could send one of his guys over with a compressor to get the car instead of me putting the donut on to just get it to the shop. This was no problem. My car was done at a reasonable price in a day. If you need to wait for a repair, the lobby is looking like a clean place to wait for repairs. It seems that they have been making changes to the interior customer waiting area since I have been in and it is a great change. It was perfectly fine before, but this is even better. Is there more I can say about The Family Mechanic and the great service they provide? Sure, but go try them for yourself. You will not regret it. read more

My car broke down and I live in Chicago but I was visiting Milwaukee for the weekend. I went to Midas where they quoted me around $1,500 for a new alternator which was not even the issue. The Family Mechanic found the issue and resolved it fast for a great price. These guys are honest and I wish they had a shop out here. read more

I can't say enough good things about The Family Mechanic. I found them because they were replacing vandalized car windows in Bayview free of labor charge. They are honest, they have great pricing, the will go the extra mile on diagnostics and research (I had a Volvo that had several strange quirks). As a female, it's an ongoing joke that mechanics will take advantage of you. Not the case here! I know because I run all of the work and pricing past the mechanics in my own family (hours away), and they say it's great! My Ford had an ignition problem, and instead of replacing right off the bat ($$$) they gave me a tip on how to make it work, and I got another whole year of use before it needed replacing (which they did for me). They also told me that my ball joint (or whatever) was going to need replacing and to keep an eye (ear) on it. They were honest about a repair that was under warranty from previous work they did- and they didn't need to do that because I wouldn't have known... But they're great. I could go on. I will take my cars there for as long as I live in the Milwaukee area. read more

I was recommended to these guys. These guys are the absolute worst. My truck was here for a month and they never touched it. When I initially called, Eli told me to bring my car in and they would fix it. That was the last time I heard from Eli. After a week, I called and it went to voicemail. The next day, voicemail. The day after, voicemail. When I finally tracked Eli down by calling his cellphone, he told me the exact same thing that he originally told me. He said that they were a little backed up but assured me that my truck would be fixed. I finally pulled the plug after my truck sitting on their lot for a month. Nothing had been completed. These guys are the worst. Don't use them. They will waste your time. When I told the person who recommended me, they said that they were rather embarrassed and that they also had problems with the vehicles that were serviced by the Family Mechanic. read more
