I got three cartilage piercings in my ears here, and I love them! Mark pierced them perfectly. The shop is a quiet and calm environment with some excellent music in the background. My mother and sister came along to watch and Mark made us all feel welcome. He was professional and clean and made sure that I was doing fine during my piercing, and he clearly knows what he is doing. Mark provided detailed aftercare instructions and I was able to purchase a saline spray at the shop, although he did not push it and even offered a recipe in case I wanted to make the saline mixture myself. I definitely felt that I was in good hands and I am super pleased with the result- this was my 18th birthday present and my first time signing for something as an adult, and Mark made that experience simple and pleasant as well. read more

So I never write reviews. I enjoy reading them, but after today I had no choice but to proceed with a review! My first comments are in regards to location, appeal, the place, the cleanliness and such other blah blah blah....this store is dope. great set up. on el camino very easy to find and get into. the store has a great variety of things to purchase as well as look at while waiting on a friend to get pierced! the smoke shop side is decent. good variety and great products. the store itself was very clean, smelled just like a smoke shop (i love that smell) and every thing was easy to look at, not to cluttered etc. overall great store the staff as a whole. awesome people. both times i came in i saw the same gentlemen but very nice, helpful people. always willing to help me and answer questions. Ha ha one guy was even throwing back jokes! great staff. NOW THE GOOD STUFF!!!!! the piercer, mark!!! I've gotten 3 piercings done here by Mark and each time he's done a great job! A year ago, I got two cartilage piercings which hurt a lot due to my ear's thickness and not because of Mark's skills. They get infected off and on all the time but that's my own fault because I don't clean them enough! A week ago, I got a nose piercing here and it's been healing great and barely hurt after the initial pierce. Mark is really fantastic and will talk with you to make sure you're in a calm head space before he gets the job done as quickly and pain-free as I've ever experienced. He'll bring you water and make sure you sit down for a bit afterwards to gather yourself. His humor definitely helps distract from the stinging! As long as you read the aftercare brochure he provides, and actually follow it, you can be sure that your piercing will heal properly and look great afterwards! There were a couple of my piercings that got infected and, not knowing to do, I let them close. I'm not a smoker, so I can only comment on the piercing business. I got my earlobes pierced here and was impressed enough that I have recommended it to several friends who also have had positive experiences. Making an appointment was straightforward. I wanted slightly larger piercings than usual, since I was considering stretching them. Mark, the piercer, was professional and explained my options thoroughly, and we settled on piercing my ears at 10 g. Attention to detail and cleanliness was good, and the actual piercing went without a hitch. I was more than a little nervous, but Mark was patient and responsive. I had some trouble with bleeding the next day due to the size of the holes in my ear, and called back as I had been strongly encouraged to do if there were any issues. This was a little unpleasant as the employee who answered the phone really didn't help very much. True, I'm not sure what they could really have done, but I didn't feel reassured putting the phone down. This is the reason I am not giving five stars. In any event, the bleeding resolved spontaneously later that day and I had no further problems. I haven't been back to get anything pierced since, but I have gone with friends who have had a similarly good experience to mine, and if I were getting another piercing I doubt I'd even consider going anywhere else. I got my nose pierced here a few hours ago and I have to say that all the fantastic reviews about Mark are true!! I was greeted right away when I walked into the shop and I let Mark know that I used to have my nose pierced but it wasn't pierced the right way and didn't seem to heal correctly. I asked how long I would have to wait to put a hoop in and he was very helpful. His piercing station does look like a doctor's office, very sterile! He let me know exactly when he was going to pierce my nose and it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I teared quite a lot but that's just because I'm a cry baby, lol! My nose ring fell out a few months ago and I couldn't get it back in. In a panic I ran to The Smoke Shop on El Camino and asked the guy to help me. He struggled for 15 minutes to get it in with no luck, my nose was bleeding and he had to use plyers to reshape the ring to get it back in. He got it in but then the back part was hanging out of my nose! He told me there was nothing that could be done because my hole was in an awkward place. After weeks of frustration, I decided to try to get a second opinion. I spoke to the piercer at Fatty Zone and he told me getting a new ring in would be no problem. And within 5 minutes, he put a brand new ring (without reshaping) in my nose. I am so glad that I didn't take the guy at The Smoke Shop's word. The guys at The Fatty Zone definitely know what they are doing. If I ever need anything else, this is the place I will be going. read more

GREAT experience at the Fatty Zone today and Mark was AWESOME! He was super clean and sterilized his hands and tools and must've changed gloves like 5-6 times when he was prepping up. I've never seen anyone change gloves and sterilize their hands so much but boy, was that much appreciated on my part. My sister got her tragus pierced and I got a rook piercing. It was such a painless experience and as I'm sitting here typing my review 1.5 hours later...it doesn't even feel like I had a needle pierced through my cartilage. I know my sister didn't feel any pain when she got her tragus pierced b/c when Mark pierced it, she asked if it was even in yet and he said yes. I remember when I got my tragus pierced years ago somewhere in SJ, it was kinda painful and for my sister to not even know when the needle pierced her tragus says a lot about Mark. He was also very thorough with the after care instructions and I'm confident that my sister and my piercing will heal well. If I decide to get another piercing, I will definitely come back. This review is for the product sales side. I purchased a vape pen battery after confirming w/the sales person that it was a standard thread / would work with most carts. There was no manual, I had to ask how to turn it on/off, then ask if it was variable and have him explain how to switch modes, then asked if anything else and he explained a 'slow draw' mode. No manual, no offering of information, I had to know to ask the questions or he would have sold it to me like a lighter. Alright so I purchase it as I'm in a bind. Get back to my spot and it's not compatible with the three carts (from different companies) that I had on hand. Researched the mystery blinking mode using the mfgr name to confirm and yeah - it's not compatible with my carts, great. Hard to believe this thing is standard. Next day I go to return it, informed there is a FIRM NO REFUND POLICY. The sales person who I purchased from certainly did not tell me that. She pointed to the sales computer monitor with a printed sign on the back (amongst a ton of death metal stickers, totally NOT visible) as the sign I should have seen, and apparently there was another sign by the door which I did not see when entering. Not clear, and not verbalized when I purchased. I calmly state that this is not standard and it does not fit what I need, it's not dirty, I charged it up and please take it back. Firm no. There are many items in that store which qualify for a no refund policy as they would be used, not the case with the battery. Also, it was not standard and didn't work for me. Now imagine making a large purchase and no one told you the policy.... Bad business. read more

I didn't know what I was doing and I wished I could have more choice in the jewelry type but could have done more internet research before coming in. Mark has got to be one of the coolest guys I've ever met. So glad I decided to do my first facial piercing at the Fatty Zone. We were probably talking it up for almost half an hour before we even got the piercing started because we were too busy having some great conversations and realizing we had mutual friends from the Bay Area. He told me all about his band, how he helped start a tattoo shop in San Jose, that one time he saved his son from a vicious dog. I love how calm Mark was during the process, and it literally took 2 minutes to do the piercing. His demeanor and personality is what makes the process seem painless, and he made me feel confident that the pain would be minor. If it was anyone else I probably would have been a lot more nervous. Past time for a review of Mark as a piercing expert. I had my ears pierced at another place closer to work a few months ago, and my left ear had repeated irritation. My left ear lobe is a bit thicker than my right, and the stud earring was not comfortable. Mark replaced my standard stud earrings with captured ball rings - smooth, rounded ends, secure. The rings move easily through my lobes, regardless of the lobes' thickness, and I sleep and do everything else much more comfortably with these rings. Mark is friendly, efficient, quick, and gentle. His procedures are very hygienic, and his advice has been excellent. When I had a medical procedure that required my CBR's to be removed temporarily, he took just a moment to remove them, and to replace them when I was finished. Mark's a great guy and a skilled, experienced piercer; I'd recommend him anytime. read more

He swapped out my jewelry for me (and sterilized it for 20 minutes in the awesome jewelry sterilizing heating machine), he gave me real instructions and was overall reassured that I wasn't going to die. Haha. My only beef was some of the workers are a little meh (not including Mark here - folks - he was 100% and on top of his game). The others act like they are either way strung out or just lazy. This review is for Mark, the piercer at The Fatty Zone. I went to Mark to get my nose re-pierced after letting it close up over 12 years ago. Things sure have changed from when I stopped by the booth at the mall back in 1986! Ouch. I felt comfortable and confident in Mark's abilities throughout the whole procedure. He did a great job placing the new piercing (I like it better than where I had it before) and explaining the entire process to me. I had some jewelery that I thought I would use, but after talking with him about the pros and cons of what I had brought in, I decided to go with something from the store. I was pretty scared about getting my ear lobes pierced because it was my first time getting anything done. I made an appointment the day of and although I had to wait a while, Mark was totally welcoming and friendly! He humbly and honestly talked me through the process, the earrings pricing, and the pain. Everything was sterilized and the piercings only hurt a little! I'm truly not a needle person and my mom was more nervous than I was, but Mark's professionalism put us at ease. After the piercings I started to feel a little dizzy and Mark was super nice about it. I had been warned by friends not to get pierced here because the piercer, Mark, is extremely rude but I was in desperate need of a new nose stud and decided to check it out. He tried to charge me for the price of a nose piercing even though I have had my nose peircing for years and just wanted new jewelery. He argued with me when I tried to politely explain I only wanted the jewlery, and yelled that he "doesn't f***ing work for free". I could tell that this is such an angry and hateful person, I'm usually pretty patient but he scared me so much I just walked out. The piercer here is a total sweetheart! I went in needing bigger plugs for my ears but not sure exactly what size. This is always a tricky situation because they can't let you try on the earrings for sanitary reasons. However, I wanted to buy two sizes anyway (the size up and one size bigger) so I suggested he try and put in the biggest ones first, guaranteeing I would buy them either way. They didn't fit, so just as I was about to go pick out a smaller size from the display in addition, he offered to throw in a beautiful pair of green glass earrings his friend had handmade in my size, for free. Sooo nice of him! A side note: the shop itself is about 90% pipes/hookahs/bongs (more than I've ever seen in a single store in New York City), some of them really beautiful. If you head to the right, there's a small but nice selection of very reasonably priced jewelry. read more

I've been to Fatty Zone about ten times over the course of three years. It feels like a different sales person each time; I wonder how they treat employees. The last time I was in there, the gal was pushy, trying to get me to spend $70 on just getting basic vape wires, cotton, and two juice bottles. I've been wanting to get my nipples pierced for a while & finally decided to do it. I went with my friend to The Fatty Zone & I have to say Mark was excellent. I didn't have an appointment but he was able to fit me in right away. I have rather large breasts and Mark took the time to make sure the piercings were even. I spent over an hour in there with him marking and making sure my piercing was going to look good. He is an awesome guy as well he put me at ease considering I was sitting there without a shirt on. This place is amazing. I got my eyebrow pierced here and both sides of my nose pierced here. The piercer was very patient with me and I'm surprised because I do have a learning disability which makes it harder for me to understand questions and makes it harder to process what people say. Most people would have thrown me out the second I said yes to a question that was not yes or no which I have done to him. Very sterile nice jewelry not good for kids it being half smoke shop and all. I walked further into the store and saw some employees in the smoking accessories section of the store. I was looking for a water pipe to use in conjunction with my vaporizer and I found a really informed and helpful staff! My ear lobe piercing closed on one Friday afternoon and well, I panicked. There was no way this earring was going through. I could feel that the skin was thin where the hole SHOULD have been but I couldn't bring myself to pierce it through. Ugh. I'm getting the hibbee jibbees just thinking about it. I called on Saturday at around 12 PM, hoping to get an appointment that afternoon. Mark was leaving at 4 PM and they gave me the last appointment at 3:30 PM. I arrived at 3:30 PM and Mark was just finishing up with another customer. The shop was really cool, kind of a Hot Topic (is this insulting? sorry! not mean to be!) for a cooler, more grown up demographic. There were a couple of people waiting for Mark with some questions; he answered them patiently but with speed and explained to them that I had an appointment. I told him what I wanted (to not be lopsided) and then I decided to ask him about my cartilage piercing. I had gone to Claire's (oh to be young and stupid) to get it and it ended up closing after getting infected. He said he could totally do it and do it RIGHT this time. I was worried about getting it infected again but he said he would give me the tools and tips needed to avoid that. My lobe piercing was fine; all he did was swiftly put the needle in and put in my earrings. The cartilage piercing....well. It HURT. But he was really nice about it and talked the whole time to distract me. He gave me a really great deal on everything. The whole shop is so friendly and I got the Yelp discount as well. It's been a few weeks since my piercing and it looks great and it hurts less and less everyday (more like, is less sensitive). If I ever want to even myself out again, I'd come to Mark and his buddies at Fatty Zone. Quality stuff. read more

A few I was a little scared to get and he really good at reassuring its fine without making you any more nervous or making you feel like you HAVE to get the piercing. Mark is great! I've been to see him four times for different piercings (second lobe, double helix [which unfortunately I neglected and let heal] and double inner cartilage) and each time he has really showed his expertise. He begins with a thorough consultation and he will not pierce something if he believes it won't work/look good or if he believes the person is too young for that kind of piercing. The first time I went to see him, about ten years ago, I watched him turn away a teenage girl and her mother because the girl wanted a tongue piercing and he felt that she was too young even with parents permission for that kind of piercing. All of the work he has done has healed beautifully and he takes the utmost care in keeping the whole process sanitary and by the book.
