Busy and good fish and chips. Always my go to place in Tobermory. This is the place with mainly fish and chips and some salad . As they are focus on fish and chips, other option available is chicken fingers and shrimp in basket. Servers are very friendly and helpful. They provide extra places and cups for friends to share. Fish is very well done among all I have in the Bruce peninsula area. The outer crispy breadcrumbed is thin and both white fish and halibut is very juicy. She white fish is local caught and not frozen. It is a casual place and kids and family are welcome. Music always on and always make you have vacation feel. Would not recommend. The haddock is likely frozen grocery store food. It's definitely processed into a block and probably been in the freezer for a while. The food also made someone in our party sick. Server was ok and the beer was fine but this is a pretty low bar. Would be more of a 3.5 out of 5 if given the option. The food is what it is- remembering that this is solely a fish and chip place and anything else cannot be expected to be spectacular. The menu is limited with everything being fried- would have loved a grilled fish option for the lighter eaters but again- this is a fish a chip place so.... Got the gosh taco, the chicken taco, fries and the desert. The tacos were loaded with mayo with I didn't love but I guess I could have asked for it without- the fish chunks were delicious. There are so many fish & chips restaurant around the area, we spoted this place on our way to the LCBO. It was amazing!! Fish and chips are pretty common in Tobermory...so I think my expectations were a bit high. First off - most restaurants close around 9pm (there are a few open to 11pm - those are the pubs). This restaurant closes at 9pm so make sure if you want to go to dinner - try to go a bit earlier. There is outside seating as well as a few tables inside. So when in Tobermory, do as the Tobermorians do and order fish and chips! 2 pieces of fish and some fries are a decent portion for one person. Unfortunately I found it underwhelming and under seasoned. Some salt and some lemon would have done absolute wonders. It wasn't that crispy battered fish I was hoping for and the fries were mehhhh. If they were fried a bit more with some salt, it would have been a great improvement The server was really friendly - but it only looked like there was one person! I know Tobermory is a small town (I think population of less than 4000) and in talking with the server she said it's hard to find people to work in the area, which is why lots of places close early! This restaurant is located on the hill be the harbour. It has a large patio for those who like to enjoy the good weather. Service - pretty attentive. We were seated fairly quickly and servers came to take our orders at an appropriate time despite it being busy. Food - we had the fish and chips and the fish tacos. The fish they use is a local Georgian bay whitefish (at least that's what they claimed) which is somewhat different than the typical halibut or cod that I'm used to. The fish tasted pretty good - I liked that it had the skin on. It was freshly fried - not overly breaded or greasy. The fries are entirely average - nothing special - pretty sure it's frozen fries thrown into a deep fryer but does the job as the "chips". The tartar sauce comes pre-packaged in those little rectangle plastic sauce packets - again, nothing special. The fish taco is also very average (arguably sub-par). Fish itself inside was fine but really not that much filling. Mainly dough, some pieces of fried fish and RAW cabbage (blegh!) - had some sort of mango sauce but even that was not enough to redeem this excuse for a fish taco. It is pretty cheap though so I guess you get what you pay for. They should just replace the raw cabbage and sauce with their coleslaw as the filling - would make it way better. Also, got a side of coleslaw which was pretty good. It's more of a creamy, sweet coleslaw for those of you who prefer the more vinegar-y kind. I do prefer the creamy coleslaw so I might be a bit biased here. Fish and chips is a Tobermory must do. They use white fish in the Georgian Bay Area instead of cod. The difference is real. It's lighter and tastier. The breading is lighter too. Okay, so it may be called 'The Fish and Chip Place', but that doesn't mean that it is a 'good' fish and chip place. Right in downtown Tobermory, it has one of the very few prime locations. The space itself was a stand and then they seem to add an area that is covered to make it a 'restaurant'. Seated ourselves as the sign said and then got some menus. Ordered the Fish and Chips, figuring it would be the best thing as it is essentially in the name, but it was a bit of a let down. The fish itself was a little bland and dry inside and the fries were on the soggy side. The service was bit slow, but there was only 1 server the entire time we were there. She had to tend to about 7-8 tables at the same time, so I really don't blame her. Overall, not a spot I would recommend if you're looking for a meal while down in Tobermory. We ate at The Fish and Chip Place on Sunday 8/18 in the late afternoon. The restaurant is right next to the bay. Most of the seating is outside and the restaurant opens completely up so even the patrons inside feel like they are sitting outside. First thing to note is there is typically no hosting/seating service. The seating is first come first served. We didn't realize this even after a man and his two kids (12ish and 14ish) pushed by us to claim a table while we looked for someone to seat us. A young woman (who later turned out to be our waitress) was extremely helpful and helped scan the restaurant for patrons finishing up so we could claim our table by hovering over the seats of the poor people. Once we were seated, our friendly waitress found us again. We loved her! We ordered Fried Calamari for an appetizer. We really enjoyed it but I was tempted to think that it was frozen because it didn't seem fresh and there was little flavor. My husband and I ordered the Fish and Chip Plate which came with two fish filets and french-fries (I substituted mine for onion rings). My daughters ordered chicken fingers and the fish bites. My husband and I also shared two *cough* pitchers of Sleeman Beer. Overall the food was average and the servings were pretty small. Despite the serving sizes, we left feeling satisfied-perhaps it was the beer?? :) Overall, the real value behind The Fish and Chip Place is the location and the local Tobermory ambiance.
