Was in Monterey on business and had a team dinner here. When planned I thought the name was familiar and walking up to it triggered my memory. My wife and I had been here before. The flashback was oh great right in the middle of a very touristy area. Food is going to be ok..... well we were wrong then and the Hopper still brings it. The place sits right at the end of a pier and has a beautiful view of the bay. Most of the time you will see some wildlife in the water. Birds, seals, otters, whales.... Amazing view. They have a great outside area for when the weathers decent. Even if it's a little cold they have heaters. The inside is very inviting and has lots of tables looking out onto the bay. The service is great, drinks are wonderful and the food is worth coming back for. Don't side step this place thinking it's in a tourist trap and only serves mediocre food. Step in, grab a cocktail, have a great meal and enjoy the views.

I stopped in on a recommendation from a colleague who'd eaten here "years ago". I stopped at the front desk and asked if they had a table for 2. They said yes, then asked if the party was here. I explained the other person was arriving in 20 minutes. They literally said to come back when the whole party was here. Whole Party? TWO people? I tried to explain it would be 20 minutes, and in that time, I could get a head start and at least order an appetizer and a drink... NOPE. So, I said, " Have a great day", and walked on over to @Louie Linguini's...where they took me in with open arms, gave me their WiFi password, and served me like family. EXCELLENT SERVICE, BETTER FOOD...and QUITE THE PETTY VIEW!!!

Really nice location by the beach and food came out really fast! Sand dabs - 5/5. A decent portion with mashed potatoes and veggies. Paired really well with the sauce Fish and chips - 4/5. I like how they breaded this and it's not too heavy! The fish is tasty but I didn't like the fries. The fries just didn't taste very good. Overall, I'd still recommend it for the ambience, fast service, and tasty food. It's just a bit pricier but well worth the ocean views.

Food: The cook of their seafood is so consistent and awesome. For the chowder, pasta or by itself, the quality of seafood and the way they're cooked is great! They nailed it! Clam chowder - This was our 5th or 6th chowder in 4 days this is the 2nd best chowder. Sweet, creamy and perfect proportion of seafood and soup. Tiny bit sweet for me but everyone loved it. Kids chicken fingers - great proportion! Fries is great too! Ultimate seafood pasta- The tri color pasta was obviously made fresh. Cooked so perfectly! Even with the cream sauce, it didnt get too soggy. It might be the best fresh made pasta ive ever tried. The scallops, lobster and prawns were cooked to perfection! Sauce was tiny bit sweet but this pasta was everyone's favorite! Bacon wrapped scallops - i cannot emphasize enough how great they cooked the seafood. Hubby ordered this and loved it. He doesnt even eat white bean stew but he ate them and loved it! Bacon was perfectly cripy. Everything complemented well! Crab and shrimp roll - The toasted brioche was soo good! The crab and shrimp were the rigjt temperature! It was good..not great great but good enough :) Bone in rib eye with lobster - lobster was of course perfect! The rib eye was... okay. Not bad. It was okay. Mashed potato was good too Macadamia crusted halibut- of course halibut waa cooked great. Crust was awesome. Hubby loved the tropical fruit salsa and citrus beurre blanc. He loved it so much, even asked for an extra one. They were a bit sweet for me but it everything was fresh and great! View- i feel like it's the biggest draw because it seems like, their restaurant is the only one that has 3 views of the water because it's sticking out the water the most. They have an adult section which is several views of the ocean. It waa beautiful! Service - it was one of those days that everyone wanted some extra stuff. Jeff our server and Patty from the front were very nice and accommodating and patient! Hope they get some good raise! Very kind and professional too. Thanks Jeff and Patty!!

I love the clam chowder and never leave without eating it or taking some home. It really is the best clam chowder, but it has to be in the delicious soft bread bowl. The bowl and soup together is a game changer. The sourdough bread is perfect. In the past, I didn't alway get the best service. Today, was a totally different experience. We were acknowledged and greeted by several staff members. Our server Bismarck, was amazing and honored the military status with a complimentary appetizer. After ordering our dinner, he continued to check in and even managers Cori and Pedro checked in with us. Pedro later gave us a challenge coin in honor our military service. I love that The Fish Hopper honors veterans and military members. It makes us want to come and support their business. The service this time around was amazing. The food is always good. The seafood is always fresh. The halibut was soft, buttery, and the crunch from the macadamia nut was perfect. If I ordered it again, I would not do the sweet sauce. It was a little too sweet for my taste. The local swordfish was flaky and had the consistency of a cooked tuna. The Cajun flavor is great with the swordfish and gnocchi. I would say it's pretty perfect balanced of spice and aromatics. This dish I think would be better with a spicy kick. Finally, the Isabella pasta was my favorite. The sauce was not too thick or cheesy. It had large amounts of shrimp and scallops. I wish I saved the sourdough to scrape up all the pasta sauce. Just when we thought we were done, they gave us a complimentary military chocolate cake, making the child super pleased! This was the best experience of all the times I had visited. I will definitely be back.

Caesar salad with anchovies (it doesn't come that way but you can ask for anchovies) Clam chowder Calamari Seafood cioppino
    Liza N.

We came here for an impromptu date as we love 2 hours away. This place is a gem! What a great way to listen to music, chill on the balcony and the heat lamp was so nice in the crisp air enjoying a wonderful meal. We had: 1. Seafood Ciopinni - 5/5 wowsers!! Don't jump on me yet... with ALL the wonderful selections available, we really had a hard time choosing because we wanted to go food hopping. What a HIT!!!! SO GOOD!! And I mean SOOOOO GOOD! Definitely a must try! 2. Fried Calamari - 3/5 the flavoring and the texture of this Calamari is good; however I like my calamari's batter extra crispy and this didn't do it for me. 3. Caesar salad - 4/5 I like that although it doesn't come with anchovies, I was able to add it on. They are strong, so take small bites and it's got a good salty kick. The only thing I didn't like is that it was drenched with dressing, and I prefer lighter on the dressing and that's definitely on me for not speaking up first. 4. Clam chowder - 3/5 the first few bites were good- after that it's too indulgent. It leans more on the thick and very creamy, almost a mashed potato thickness... so it was way too filling. It's definitely more of a preference than anything, but overall flavor is good. Shout out to our waiter Santiago!!! He was Alfred in a seafood joint. Very attentive, solution based and overall just really friendly which just added an extra layer to a lovely evening.

I came here recently and honestly the views alone make it worth it. It's right on the water and even though we didn't sit outside (it was getting cold and my daughter is just getting over a cough), we still had a booth with a really nice ocean view. Our server Shaniya was very sweet and patient, especially with my daughter who kept asking her name over and over. She handled it so kindly. Omar was also helping out and stayed on top of clearing the table and checking in on us, which I appreciated. Pedro, I believe the manager, was also really nice. My husband had a question about the music and they all took the time to answer and make sure we were comfortable. The food was actually better than I expected. We started with the crab stuffed mushrooms, really good. My husband got the clam chowder and fried halibut and chips. He loved the halibut, said it was fried perfectly, not too heavy or thick like a lot of places. He usually doesn't even like fried seafood like that, so that says a lot. Only thing he mentioned was for about $50, the portion is a little small, so it didn't fully fill him up. I had the cioppino and it was fresh and really flavorful. My daughter had spaghetti, and it was actually really good too (she didn't finish it but I tasted it lol). For dessert, she got a sundae and I had the key lime pie, both were good and we left full. Overall, great experience, good service, and amazing views. I'd definitely come back.

We got drawn in this place with a free sample of their clam chowder, and the moment it hit my wife's lips, we knew we weren't leaving without a full order. She ended up saying it was the best clam chowder she had on the entire trip, and we tried a few different spots in the area. The bread bowl was fresh and the chowder itself was the star. It had a great balance of creamy, savory, and just a touch of sweetness. It came out piping hot and was incredibly satisfying. We also ordered fish and chips, which were good and definitely hit the spot, but not quite on the same level as the chowder. The wait was about 15 minutes, which wasn't bad. We ended up taking our food to go and eating on a park bench nearby. It was still a great experience, but in hindsight, I kind of wish we had sat inside the restaurant to enjoy the full atmosphere. That said, it's nice to have the flexibility to take it back to your hotel or eat along the waterfront. Parking can be a bit tough. We got lucky with street parking and just kept feeding the meter. Pro tip: you can pay the meter online and extend your time, which made things way easier. The location is also super convenient, right by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and perfect for walking along Cannery Row and checking out all the shops. Overall, a really solid stop. Come for the chowder, stay for the location.

I had a fantastic dining experience here, but what truly set this place apart was the exceptional customer service. Manager Cori went out of her way to honor my military service, making me feel genuinely appreciated and honored as a veteran. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was wonderful, but Cori's thoughtful gesture made this an unforgettable meal. Highly recommend!

The Fish Hopper is the same ownership group who has Old Fisherman's Grotto, the Grotto Fish Market as well. This is a total tourist place, just like the others. However, there are many tourists in need of food so this group manages to pull it off. This place is big inside, quite noisy and fast paced. The service was good no complaints. The fish and chips - well I've had much better in a nice way of saying it. The clam chowder seemed a little thin as well. The Monterey sardines were good as was the artichoke. What I will recognize and the basis for my rating, is they recognize active duty military and veterans. You get a choice of the calamari, the artichoke, or ahi tuna poke wontons free of charge including a free dessert. As a veteran, I love seeing the community give back. Well done Fish Hopper - keep being classy!

Awesome view, quick service, waiter was excellent. Cioppino was perfect for sharing. It's right next to beach so my toddler was entertained by that.

Some of the best clam chowder I've ever had. Literally I would come back here for the chowder. This is the most creamy, rich, punch your taste buds full of flavor dishes. I cannot say how delicious this clam chowder was. A lot of places put "world famous" or "award winning" but those descriptions are 100% accurate in this case. Sesame crusted mahi mahi was ok. Came with two different sauces and a white and black crusted side. Kinda going for a yin-yang thing, I suppose. Wasn't successful in my opinion. The fish itself didn't have much flavor and you were going back and forth between the two sauces. Kind of meh. Fish and chips with halibut was really delicious. The texture was way better than the cod that's normally used and flavor was perfect. Crab cakes were crab cakes. Pretty run of the mill. Bucket of fire was a DRANK. That first sip pretty much knocked me on my butt. It was good. Strong. Supposed to be split between two. Service was good - atmosphere nice. Right along the beach. Honestly just get the clam chowder. Get two.

We have been coming to The Fish Hopper off and on for the last 20 years. We wanted to sit down and enjoy the views without being too crowded so we stopped in at 1130ish for lunch on 5/23. My family of 4 were the only ones waiting when we walked in. 2 staff members at the host desk were busy talking about seating arrangements etc while we just waited. Thankfully, a supervisor saw this and directed them to help us first. While I am glad a supervisor saw this and redirected them, the restaurant was not busy at the time and they should have seated us and then worked on their seating arrangements or at least acknowledged our arrival and let us know they would be with us shortly. It's just poor customer service. Once we were seated, Cindy took great care of us. She greeted and acknowledged us and told us she would be right back. She returned quickly and we ordered drinks while looking at the menu. Cindy did a great job reminding us of their lunch specials and beverage options. Items ordered: 2 unsweetened iced teas- refreshing Orange juice Apple Juice Cup of Clam Chowder x2- A little too creamy for my taste but filled with plenty of clams and veggies. Kid's fish and chips- Kiddo enjoyed this and I thought the quality of the fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. Kid's chicken tenders with fries- Kiddo enjoyed this dish and loved the fries Swordfish and shrimp salad from their lunch special menu- plenty of protein and fresh ingredients! Presented beautifully and taste and flavor was great! Spinach ravioli with cajun fish and shrimp from lunch menu- Delicious and beautifully plated! Loved the flavors and sauce! Well done!! Chocolate passion fruit cake- Moist and great flavor without being overly sweet. Chocolate mousse (in edible cup)- Another beautiful presentation and tasted amazing! I am not usually a chocolate fan but do enjoy mousse occasionally. This was just what I needed. Not too sweet but perfect whipped texture and came with some strawberry and blackberries. Even kiddo helped himself to my dessert. Service was top notch! The staff topped off our iced teas at least 4x, frequently made sure we had water, and provided enough attention to make sure we had a nice experience. We certainly appreciate this! Thank you so much Cindy B! The wood tones, jellyfish lights, and direct views of the water make the experience perfect for any occasion. We can't wait to be back!

I mean it wasn't too difficult to find, but it was kind of weird they didn't have their own entrance into the restaurant but no big deal. I wanted to try both the cherry lime ricketey and the pink lemonade so the boyfriend got the ricketey and I got the lemonade. I'm so glad we did it that way because I found the cherry and lime drink too bitter and sour. I know that it's supposed to be sour, but it was just too much. Didn't love it as much as I hoped it would have. The pink lemonade was so good! I love the throwback to a childhood drink (with some alcohol of course). So good. Protip: give it a chance and definitely come here for a drink!

The inside is very cozy feeling, with the entire wall behind the bar being basically a library of whiskey. My first visit, I had a flight of Redwood Empire bourbon & rye. It was god, RE makes great stuff. For my second visit, I had their Islay Trio flight, wanting to try something different. Best one was by far the Lagavulin 16 year (glass on the right), as it has a rich peaty flavor to it. They even allowed my dog to sit inside with me, although we were limited to the counters at the front of the lounge. Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating to my pup and I, even bringing him water. This is a fantastic place to visit if you're a whiskey connoisseur, or just want a good cocktail. Cheers!

As a whisky enthusiast going back to 2017, this place is fantastic for trying and trying and trying…read more...and trying. Mitch the owner knows things, has stories, and can point you to bottles to try. And if he's gotten to know your palate, he'll start suggesting some bottles you should buy from his shop. And if you're a little tipsy, you might buy that bottle even if you really didn't want to. But then you'll taste the bottle later and curse Mitch for being right about the damn bottle. Anyway, always a mystery visit when I'm in town.

The vibes are here but it all stops there…read more.. Let me start by saying that I love this place. Just needs a bit of cleaning up on their transparency. The 'keep it open' policy is something I appreciate but would also appreciate an itemized receipt when you close out. Here's why to keep your eye out when drinking at this establishment. 1- when you close out, it's helpful to verify what you consumed to ensure you're corrected charged. My receipt was the merchant copy and the customer copy. Itemized? Really had to ask for it. 2- the merchant copy - it asked for a tip and the total amount. When we closed out our beer and well drink, it was ~$28. Weird, right? So my thought was that they clearly charged something incorrect. 3- when there's something automatically charged, it had better be communicated to me upfront. The gratuity was automatically added and IT WAS 20%! No sign, no way to notify me that it was already added. It didn't even say so on the merchant or customer copy. On top of that, the copy asked for AN ADDITIONAL TIP. For something like that, I had better get great service. 4- The service here is spotty at best. There's usually one bartender for the often busy bar. Not a problem, usually. But with that high of a price, better serve your customers well and have a fully stocked bar. 5 - the options were lacking. Two things you'd think would be stocked but weren't - espresso (come on, even Kahlua) and apple liqueur for an espresso martini and appletini were too much to ask for, I guess. Overall, a disappointment. Good thing they have the vibes nearly right. But awful business practices.

The Belgian waffle is a must- it's decadent, the berries are fresh and the whipped cream is cloud-like and sweet. The American breakfast was hearty and filling. The bacon was perfectly chewy, salty and cooked. The Yukon potatoes were crispy and had a good level of spice. The eggs were super fluffy as well. The sourdough was warm and the butter was creamy. Our server was extremely kind and was ON IT when it came to refills and making good conversation, super kind and made sure to check on us consistently.

Let's start with the wins: the service was genuinely excellent -- attentive, warm, professional. The Old Fashioned was well-crafted, and major props to the bar program for stocking Nochino. That's a detail that signals someone behind the bar actually cares. The food, though? It missed. The fish was overcooked and the presentation felt like an afterthought. For a restaurant at this price point and in this setting, I expected more -- both on the plate and on the plate. You can forgive a lot in a restaurant when everything else sings. But the food is the whole point, and this one didn't deliver. Worth a drink at the bar. Skip dinner and eat somewhere else in Monterey.

It was for a group of seven (3 kids and 4 adults), and it was the perfect choice to make the day special. The restaurant is beautiful, and we loved the amazing views paired with lovely weather. We had to ask for directions once we arrived at the hotel, but it was worth finding. We also really appreciated the complementary valet parking for two hours with our reservation. The service was excellent -- our server was friendly, attentive, and really helped make the occasion feel memorable for the whole family. The food was tasty overall. We ordered the fish and chips, clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and the sea bass tacos. The clam chowder was delicious and paired wonderfully with the fresh sourdough, while the sea bass tacos were flavorful and a real highlight. The fish and chips tasted great with good seasoning and fresh fish, but it arrived a bit soggy by the time it reached our table. It was still enjoyable, though I wish it had been crispier. All in all, the food was good, the views and atmosphere were fantastic, and the excellent service made it a wonderful Father's Day lunch celebration. Highly recommended!

I didn't know that Schooner's was in the Monterey Plaza Hotel, so I did have to ask some directions as to how to get downstairs to the restaurant. Arriving a bit early, we did have to wait until our reservation time to order lunch instead of breakfast, but the hotel was quite nice, and we were able to sit on a bench overlooking Monterey Bay. When we were seated, we opted outside to get a nice view, and they do have heating lamps (that were even a little bit too warm) so don't worry about the breeze. I ended up getting the fish and chips, my wife got cioppino, and the little one got some buttered pasta off the kids menu. The fish and chips was amazing...so fluffy and flaky but also had a nice crisp on the outside - probably some of the best fish n chips that I've had! Our little one also enjoyed the pasta, which was basically spaghetti noodles with butter, and we were appreciative that she was given some crayons to entertain herself. Service was excellent as well. Overall, it was a rather fancy, but very nice lunch for the three of us, and I enjoyed being a little bit away from the busy wharf/Cannery Row to enjoy ourselves before the crowded aquarium. Highly recommend!

I was so thrilled to check this pub out especially with our doggie, Meatball the Bulldog! How perfect right? A Bulldog at The Bulldog Sports Pub. We snagged the last available booth, and it had crumbs on there. Not clean. SMH. I went to the bar to order some drinks for my boyfriend and me since he left his wallet in the car. It was raining that night, and we parked several blocks away. The service was okay. I remember the guy bartender said $29something, but then he charged me $30something. I got the Jalapeno Margarita while my boyfriend had the Tito's Mule. My drink was very sweet with a kick of jalapeno while his was pretty good. They had music playing. It seems that there is a modern jukebox where you can pay to pick a song. There was one pool table for people to play. So many people came up to pet Meatball and give him so much attention. He absolutely loved it! There was one guy who asked if he can say "Hi" to Meatball, and we said that it was okay like we normally do. This weirdo was basically making out with Meatball; not cool at all man. Then Meatball flipped on his back, and he was holding Meatball. My boyfriend told him to let go of Meatball. It was such an uncomfortable interaction. Not normal at all. He even said, "This is my NYE kiss!" SMDH. The guy sat down at a table that is across from us, and he kept looking at us. We quickly finished our drinks, and then we left to ring in the new year at our hotel lobby instead. We should have just hung out in our hotel lobby instead of going out; it was much better there.
