I ordered the grilled fish entrée with veggies, and it was exactly what I wanted: simple, clean, and flavorful. Sometimes a straightforward dish done well is all you need. We came for Happy Hour and easily got sat at the bar. The restaurant wasn't very busy but most restaurants in Monterey we saw/encountered weren't full. Bartender was good, kinda disappeared at the end. Got the HH fish tacos which were Pacific cod or maybe rockfish - they were pretty good tacos. The Isabelle pasta isn't on the HH menu anymore but our bartender was still able to ring it through to us, it was pretty enjoyable, decent amount of seafood. We decided to try Fish Hopper instead of our usual stop at Old Fisherman's Grotto, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The food was just okay--certainly not bad, but nowhere near as flavorful or memorable as Old Fisherman's Grotto. The service was the biggest letdown. Our server barely acknowledged us throughout the meal and rarely checked in. When we asked for more grated cheese, it felt like we were inconveniencing them--they sighed and seemed annoyed by the request. It wasn't the friendly, attentive service you hope for when dining out, especially with a $60 price tag per entree. We ordered the Ultimate Seafood pasta and appetizers. We'll definitely be going back to Old Fisherman's Grotto, where the food is consistently much better and the service has always been warm and attentive. Walking distance from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, this spot was the perfect food destination for something on the water, child friendly, and with soup! I love clam chowder and when I saw its award winning and would come in a bread bowl- I was sold. The chowder was creamy , salty, and packed with flavor. The bread bowls top was generously doused with a garlic butter that pulled it all together. Our 6 month old was with us ! It was the perfect break from the drive. You have to get the The Clam Chowder!!! I'm pretty sure they've won awards for this, and after one bite, I totally get why. It is easily the best clam chowder I've ever had. Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor! it's a must-order!!! We decided to share the Seafood Fettuccine because we both weren't that hungry but wanted to try. This plate was also delicious and the seafood was fresh and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I paired my meal with a Bloody Mary, and it was the perfect "shore-side" drink well-spiced and hit the spot. If you are doing the drive down the coast, you have to stop here. Amazing views and delicious food on a fully enclosed pier with a great atmosphere. We came here for our family Christmas Eve dinner and were lucky enough to spot an otter swimming and eating along the shore, which made the evening even more special. Our server was great and very understanding about a dish modification. Unfortunately, the kitchen still prepared it with the sauce and we had to send it back, but the server handled it graciously and was extremely accommodating. I will preface first with saying I did call the Restaurant and speak to the manger after our visit. The situation weighted in my mind for several days and I just could not say something . We visited the restaurant after an eventful time at the Aquarium. We came after the lunch rush & were seated within 10 mins of putting our names in. As many others have noticed and have said in their review that they do have a written up policy right by the host stand that talks about taking your children outside if they are crying or to take phone calls outside. I don't mind the sign & we have three children under 5. We are respectful in general and keep our kids quiet in restaurants. However, the sign came off abrupt & was off putting. The food was really good! Our son (5 years old), liked his spaghetti and meatballs, and that was around $15. My husband had a cioppino and that was priced around $50-$60. I had a delicious special that was salmon with coconut rice and vegetables that was around $30. It was very good & balanced. We also ordered a virgin pina colada , and an appetizer of calamari. Our two other children do not have dishes because one is only 20 months and she shares dishes with us. The other one is only a month at the time. Here's the issues- our server. I don't even think he told us his name. We were seated and asked what we would like to drink. I usually order iced tea in restaurants and I don't drink alcohol. However, I was just thirsty and wanted water. So we let the server know we would like one ice tea and water for the kids & us. From my perspective, that is when everything went downhill. He seemed put off that we didn't want to order drinks that were other than flat water. When we asked about the specials, he basically told us we could go to the front of the restaurant and look at the specials to decide. He insinuated to my husband that you were basically looking for items on the menu that were inexpensive. But would really take the cake for me and why I decided to call the restaurant a few days later. When our calamari was dropped off at the table by nice younger man, I asked him what kinds of things he enjoyed there or what kinds dishes were ordered often . He works in the back of the house and I wanted his opinion. He proceeded to offer me his opinion and as he tells me of a couple dishes, our server walks over and Shoos him away. Me- " I was just asking him what kinds dishes that are popular here" Server " oh he works in the back" Me- "yes I know .. that why I asked him" After we placed our food orders .. we really didn't see much of our server. He checked us maybe twice & a manager actually touched our table twice because we were waiting quite a while for food. We did not complain about the wait but I thought it was nice the manger checked in. I also noticed that servers would bring around a dessert tray to show the tables but ours did not. When I called and spoke to a manager I asked if he was suppose to show us the dessert plate & he apparently he was. I could get over how our server shooed away that food runner & how he spoke about him so I made a call a few days later. My husband, is a chef & has worked in the back of house his whole career. It bothered me that the server was so quick to discredit the food runner and so dismissive of us. We would come back.. maybe without kids and would definitely speak up sooner read more

Maybe I should've let him. Ambiance is SUPERB! I believe this is what you pay for!!!! You see the wildlife if you sat where we did. Bussers are the REAL MVP's! They cleared the tabled filled our glass and made sure we were doing well and to grab our server. THE FOOD THE FOOD!!! MAN!! I'll just come here for the drinks, and the calamari. Clam chowder was like warm grainy jello, oh I'm a chowder connoisseur. The Oyster Rockefeller, never. I really don't understand what flavor profiles were trying to happen there, but they weren't happening. The Special Coconut Salmon, the flavor was nice, the rice was well cooked, the sauce was good too, the salmon was dry for them saying it was local. The PRAWNS WERE NOT EDIBLE, they were very dense and rubbery. We didn't even finish eating them. I would not order this. We ordered another local dish a snapper sandwich, and it was good according to my younger brother. I wouldn't come back honestly unless it was for the drinks and the view. I'll save the best for last. The calamari! Was perfect. I have zero qualms! It was great. Not chewy at all a perfect crisp crust and a pretty good tartar. I can't complain AT ALL!! I JUST WANT TO GIVE A WARNING FOR THOSE WHO LOVE GREAT LOCAL FOOD MAYBE IT WASNT MY DAY BUT ID SAY COME FOR THE DRINKS AND THE VIEW AND SOME CALAMARI. Been here many times for lunch and it never fails. This place is so so good. This explains why it is one of the busiest restaurants in Cannery Row. To start, their sourdough rolls with butter are so good, especially when you dip them in their award-winning clam chowder. After trying clam chowder at so many places around Monterey, they have best one in my opinion. The calamari is to die for and crab cakes are also good. For our mains, we love their fish and chips, spicy shrimp scampi (huge pieces of shrimp), and crispy jumbo prawns. We tried the Taste of Monterey special & the swordfish and salmon as well. Great location right on the Monterey Bay. The decor is very creative, clean, and professional. Customer Service starts with a greeting from the host, followed by friendly hostesses at the front desk. Our server Desiree is over the top friendly, kind, and polite. The coconut shrimp arrived and was quickly devoured. The ahi steak was large and perfectly seared. After our whale watching tour got canceled due to rough seas, we wandered around cannery row having a grand old time and wound up at this place based on the views alone. And they are great, the only way the view could be better is if they had an outdoor patio. Our server was very nice & attentive, we never even had to wait for a drink. The food was really tasty, especially the key lime pie. Plus I'm a sucker for oysters, & their accoutrements of vinegar, horseradish, and cocktail sauce complemented them nicely. Honestly, everything was good, it was just really expensive. You're definitely paying for the view & the location more than anything, because while the food and drinks are not bad by any means, they're also not anything you're going to be raving about either.
