This place is old Florida. They DO accept credit cards. No AMEX. Ordered grouper and fried oyster combo, and for the 2 sides I chose cheese grits and their home made crispy chips. Grouper was fresh, oysters were deep fried nearly perfectly, and the grits were really good too. The chips were also quite good. Including iced tea, the total was $17. It was a fair price for what you get....its a lot of food for one person. The picnic type benches were clean, and they have a person that keeps them clean. I got there just in time, and didn't have to wait in line. 6 minutes later, there were 7 people in line. Food comes out fresh and hot, and they do a nice job of expediting the orders. This is a shack like place with a large covered awning with picnic tables. If that is not your cup of tea, don't let it discourage you. The Basa fish was fresh, light and tasty. All the items I saw on the menu were fried, so if you are not wanting fried.... then go for some sides. We heard the cheesy grits were a must. If I had to rate the place based off of them, I would say a 3 Star sadly. I have to say my cheese grits are much more flavorful. Let me help you if order them. Add salt and pepper and mix the cheese up well or you will feel like you are choking on the cheese with half in your mouth and half down your throat. Now back to the great fish! There was about 8 delicious pieces in the dinner order, that you get two sides with the meal for $10 and change. Filling and delicious! Plenty of parking, the employees are friendly and answered our questions. Now just a heads up. The restaurant sneaks up on you, so you may have to hang a u turn if someone is riding the tail of your bumper. Wow! Little hole in the wall place dishes up some of the best fresh seafood I have ever had. This place is not open every day, but when it is run down and get your fresh fish and fries. Really really good! Their fries are always piping hot and the fish sandwiches are awesome. The atmosphere is fun and divey and there's always a bunch of people. We came at night so we had to contend with mosquitoes for our seating, but it was delicious so it didn't matter. Have only been here once so I can't speak on any of the other dishes, but I really want to come here and try their smoked mullet as I'm a big fan. read more

One day about 10-12 years ago, this popped up almost overnight, in the middle of nowhere on Shell point Rd., in Ruskin. This is a family owned eatery, I really wouldn't call it a restaurant. It is a small building for cooking, that has communal picnic tables & serves only fried seafood. Rest assured if they say grouper, it is grouper. On my most recent visit I had the grouper sandwich, added some hot sauce and an order of coleslaw on top of the grouper. Fish was fresh & cooked perfectly. I am not really a fried food type of person, but here I will continue to make an exception. The coleslaw is dynamite and has a bit of a bite, maybe horseradish. Next time try the coleslaw on top of your sandwich, supper yummy & crunchy. What's a girl to do? Eat good seafood wherever you may find it, even a roadside shack! read more

Outdoor seating only !!!! This was not our first trip to the Fish House, but when my son asked us if we wanted to go with him & his family there for dinner, how could we refuse! Everyone is crazy about this place. And it is a great place. Staff is super friendly. The portions are very generous, and for fried food, it is NEVER greasy! I have no idea what they use for frying, but it works. I got the Basa fish dinner which is really fish and chips. Tons of Basa nuggets (didn't know fish came in nugget size!) with god awful shoe string fries. Cole slaw was great. Tartar sauce was a bit off. The fish, though plentiful was tasteless. Literally, no flavor at all. So I gave away most of my fish, didn't eat the fries and devoured the cole slaw cuz I was hungry! Needless to say, I left there still hungry, so we stopped for ice cream on the way home , which I would never do after a meal that fills me up. This is a very rustic place. A shack on the side of the road with picnic tables outside for seating, which I love by the way. The temperature makes it a bit uncomfortable, but you know what your in for when you come here. This would be the perfect Beach restaurant with the décor and an ocean breeze to cool you off. Worth a try if your into fried seafood! Tips to the owners: A better fries would be nice and perhaps put a little flavor in your batter so fish as mild as Basa has some flavor. read more

We all tried different dishes crab sandwich, fried shrimp, fried oysters and we all got sick. Their kitchen is in a portable shed. Gross. Every one of the people at the Fish House are nice people. They try hard even when the lines are long. It's fun to go there and sit outside with beer or wine you bring yourself. We like the shrimp, but find the house fish too bland and tasteless. The grouper is expensive, but more tasty. I just wish it wasn't in such small pieces each breaded and fried. read more

I was excited to try this place after reading the reviews. I ordered the house fish and fried oysters. The "house fish" is described mysteriously on the menu, (they won't tell you what it is). It's described as: "mild, flaky and always a hit"... The fish tastes like a bland, odd textured variation of catfish. My guess is that it's Basa. I would also guess that it is shipped frozen from a fish farm in Thailand or Vietnam. Not Good! The oysters were better but overcooked and slightly chewy. The side of beans tasted canned, the coleslaw was good! Huge disappointment. We live in Florida, why not sell fresh Florida fish? read more

This is probably the BEST fried fish you'll get in the Central Florida area. I would even be willing to put it up as one of the best in the state. You may read some reviews and people actually complain about their being too much fried food, well that's their specialty, "FRIED Fish" which they have perfected and is always consistent. This place is an absolute hole in the wall. It's outdoor seating near a forest like area. I do mean hole in the wall in the kindest way possible. Heads up though! Don't expect to just be eating... expect to me EATEN also! When I say this I mean, the amount of bugs/flies/spiders in this place is what horror flicks are made of. 2 out of 3 key lime pies had bugs fly in and of course the scaredy pants children I have began closing the pie up immediately and threw it away as if the pie was on fire. My son midway into eating had a fly go straight into his mouth and each of us had at least 15 insect bites each. That all being said.. the food was great. I don't really like too much fried food, I was hoping to find something not fried and it wasn't on the menu. Everything was fried. The baked beans were gross in my opinion but the fries were decent and the grits with cheese were ok. The soft shell crab was great, the fried catfish and fried grouper was great. Mostly it was great if you can get past the flies & bad beans. I would recommend this place if your adventurous and want that going into the swamp to eat fish experience. I say go for it! Great service, a little pricey. Not a fan of fish sandwich. It was mushy when I bit into it with no texture. Most items on menu are frozen then fried. Fries were good. Chicken sandwich is good. My wife loves The scallops and shrimp. The pies they have for dessert are all great and home made. I heard good things about this place so I finally stopped in recently. This is an outdoor eatery ala an old hot dog stand. You eat on picnic tables out front, so no need to dress up. I came for a grouper sandwich but they told me they never have had it. I settled for a "white" fish sandwich, the perverbial mystery fish. Instead of one piece of fish like you usually get it was a few small strips of fried fish with lettuce and a mayo sauce on a hamburger bun. Pretty much a let down. I've eaten here many times and it has always been good. It has slipped a little bit the last couple of times I've been here. This time, I went with a large shrimp and catfish combo with okra and baked beans, with a soft shell crab on the side. As always, the shrimp were really good. The catfish was so-so. The soft shell crab was pretty small. The okra was overcooked and the baked beans were fine (I think they are B & M). There is always a wait because this place is really popular. This is a god damn goldmine. First of all who doesnt like a big basket of perfectly golden fried yummy seafood. Randomly picked this place thanks to yelp of course. The hubby and I were driving around checkin the area out and low and behold this little outdoor picnic table diner was within close reach for our growling tummys. I ordered the scallops, and fried green tomatoes. The portions were massive. The deep fried batter was perfectly crunchy. Turns out my eyes were bigger than my stomach and i ended up takin some serious leftovers home. This place aint fancy, you order at a window, find an empty picnic table, and stare at the cars driving by while waiting for your order outside. Its fun and enjoyable on a nice day.
