I went here because I had gotten a coupon and it was close, since I've heard good things I decided to try it. The resturant is tiny so if you're looking to go for dinner on a Friday night, I suggest reservations just to be sure you get a table and don't have to wait. We ordered baked clams as an appatizer, which were delicious. Very hot and full of taste. For entrees, I got the peppercorn seared tuna that came with creamed spinich and mashed potatos. My boyfriend got the crab cakes. Both came out and were hot, fresh, and beautifully presented. The food blew my mind, it was so good. I forced myself to finish since it was seriously that good. I'd like to give The Fish Store a 3.5 but I rounded up because I feel like I need to give it another whirl. From the outside on Montauk Highway it looks mediocre and kinda eh but once I walked in I was ready to give it a whirl. I was craving a fried flounder sandwich with raw onion and tartar sauce. It was pretty good if I do say so myself. Only major disappointment was that I kept needing to add more tartar sauce to the sandwich. I felt like I took a bite the next bite would need more tartar sauce. So the bulk of my lunch consisted of me holding half the sandwich in one hand knife in other waiting for tartar sauce. Also split the Lobster Bisque. That was delicious. That in itself for me at lunch time can be a meal. Plenty of lobster meat, rich, creamy, and divine. Not too overpowering on the Sherry either so double score there. I've had lobster bisque where I feel like I'm drinking a glass of Sherry with a spoon. Totally not my taste. Now... if it were Riesling or Pinot Noir now we're in business. Service was great. Both of the girls working were quick and efficient and asked often enough if everything was good. I mean our waitress took our drink order which was water and a sweetened iced tea not even 2 minutes later she's back with the beverages. So The Fish Store I'll be back. Didn't meet my expectations;however was okay. Service- the service was good. They had two waiters that seemed to wear three hats. 1- hostess, 2- waitress, 3- busy boys. With all that being said the two girls wore their hats well and never let us see them sweat. This is a beautiful restaurant. Very small and gives you that mom and pop, bed and breakfast kind of feel. Decor gives you a feeling of lighthouse visit/ sailor/ life guard kind of feel which I liked. It matched their food options of seafood. Food- *DISCLAIMER* I like well seasoned food. Their food just fell short for me (minus the soup). I don't know if it fell short for me because I was comparing it to a seafood place I had visited last summer or if it feel because they just needed some more umph added to their dishes but either way I was a little disappointed. RUN DOWN OF MY FOOD: Soda was flat Crawfish soup was soooo good. Perfect! It's was like veggie soup mixed with a ton of yummy seafood I seriously couldn't ask for more. Baked clams were okay. I enjoyed them but nothing to write home about. Seafood marinara- fell so short. It needed more seasoning less sauce. I just wanted so much more from this dish. Overall my experience was okay. I honestly don't get the 3 1/2 star overall rating! If The Fish Store isn't the very definition of what a 5-star rated establishment should be, I don't know what is! I have used The Fish Store for both dine-in and take-out, and I can honestly say they have absolutely nailed it for me every time! Their food is always fresh, their portions are more than ample, and I don't feel as though I need to take out a bank loan just to pay for dinner! Just as any business, no matter how good, there is bound to be an off-night here or there, but The Fish Store is CONSISTENTLY good, and believe me, if they weren't, they would have NEVER had my repeat business. A tip: although you will enjoy almost anything on the menu, I highly recommend their to-die-for lobster bisque soup, and their lobster roll is arguably one of the best bargains on Long Island. read more

I'm not happy to write this review, but I must get it out. Tonight was the worst experience we have had. My husband and I went to The Fish Store in Bayport for dinner tonight as we have purchased fish there before, but never ate in their dining room. My husband ordered a seafood dish of Lobster, Mussels, Shrimp, Scallops and Clams over linguine with a red sauce for 31.99. As he ate it he said it didn't taste right and he saw a mussel that had a disgusting look to it. He showed it to the server who came back and said "That's just mud". Like it was nothing. We didn't want to make a scene although we were the first diners there and by that time there were other patrons. When we returned home after being disgusted by the "mud", we called and spoke to the manger Traves. He apologized but was very nonchalant about the whole thing. How would he like to be told he was eating "mud" which I think was all the duck s**t that was in the water from wherever these mussels came from. The food at this Bayport fish market/ restaurant isn't the best. In fact, it's kind of lousy but you can't beat the value which is why I'll be fair and rate it 3 stars. The corn chowder was bland and lacked any spices. Maryland crab cakes though they had crab, were served a bit burned and had a strange mustard flavor. Tried the grilled orange roughy which tasted exactly like cod. Usually a delicate tasting fish, it was a tad fishy even though it was grilled. The broiled mahi mahi was okay with a mild white wine/ lemon sauce. The fries though were great. Prices for seafood here can't be beat and the staff were great, very helpful and friendly. I was very dissatisfied with the lump crab cakes. The crab cakes were mostly filler with and no lump of crab to be found , they also had pieces of shell inside. The worst I have had. Also beware if you buy the cooked shrimp it is not sold by the pound, it is less then three quarters of a pound. I was given an excuse when I questioned the weight . I have purchased seafood in many states and have been given the pound by weight not a lame excuse as to why it is less . I think there should be a sign posted so the customer is aware of the Fish Store policy. I would not recommend this place, and will go elsewhere for my seafood. read more

I've always had reservations about this place but tonight was the topping on the cake. I stopped in and picked up a 1/2 pound of "fresh" sea scallops. Well, I swear that they were once frozen. When I got them home they had that slightly hard, crystallized feel to them. When I cooked them they extracted so much water that they didn't caramelize the way that fresh scallops in a hot pan should. And another thing, as you wait to get rung up you can look right into the kitchen. It is very disgusting. Though I haven't actually purchased fish from the front of the shop, I had the opportunity to dine in the restaurant in the back last night. It's a tiny place that doesn't require much of a dress code, and they offer basic seafood recipes using the fish that they sell and supply up front: seafood grilled, broiled, battered/fried, and the occasional specials that come with fancy-shmancy sauces. I ordered the "hat-trick" special which was a combination of shrimp, scallops, and a type of white fish (the type escapes me now... Probably because I didn't eat much of it), BUT I switched out the scallops for clams. This special was breaded and fried, but the seafood was clearly fresh and not frozen. It didn't come with many sides and dips other than some lemon wedges, tartar sauce, ketchup, and a pasta salad, but I suppose you don't need much if the seafood tastes so good by itself. It's a simple place that offers great seafood, but don't walk in expecting a foodie environment that offers the latest and greatest recipes. read more

I hate to say this but.... All I wanted for my birthday was lobster. My husband would do anything for me. I've passed this place many times. I figured we'd try it. I got a whole lobster and baked potato. According to the menu I was supposed to get coleslaw. I did not get any. My husband is not a fish eater, so I asked if they had anything that wasn't seafood.. The women on the phone said fried chicken. Wow yes says the hubs. His fried chicken was for a baby. It was skinny little strips of chicken. Not even chix fingers. Skinny little strips, the size of my pinky. Well that was odd. He didn't complain much because I got my lobster, and that's what mattered to him. The lobster claws seemed to be okay. Until I got to the tail. It was chewy and hard to swallow. It tasted a little funny. I choked it down. Well that ended up being a mistake. I threw my guts up on my bday night. I am so totally turned off now. To think I was excited to chew on rubber, and then throw up all night. I don't think I would order cooked food from here. Seth and his team were amazing to work with, very easy going, and helpful throughout the planning. we had the individual lobster meals delivered to the hotel where our guests enjoyed everything. the lobsters and sides were all cooked to perfection and priced right. the portions were hearty and generous. the place itself is conveniently located and very clean. customer service and food is excellent. it was an awesome dinner! read more

I was very impressed. I live in Bayport and usually buy my fish here but waited to try the restaurant. I asked the server what was fresh and she recommended the Monk Fish. It was absolutely delicious. Prepared in a very light butter sauce it was tasty and dietetic at the same time. The sides were equally good, real mashed potatoes and sauteed string beans and carrots. I did not give it 5 stars because my companion had Chilean SeaBass and her entree was watery and tasted as if it might have been frozen. Definitely ask what is fresh, and stick with that. When we arrived the place was empty. Rachael was the only waitress on the floor. She was wonderful by the way. We ordered a dozen oysters and a half dozen baked clams. Oysters had shells and were definitely below par. Clams were all breading. Could not find any remnants of a clam. Then lunch came. My friend's flat iron steak was small but tasty. I ordered the TFS Special. It was supposed to be seafood stuffed flounder, 2 shrimp & 2 clams. I had to pay $4 extra to get broccoli because my meal came with potato chips. My meal came out with more breading than anything else. Couldn't find the seafood stuffing if I tried. The 2 shrimp were TAILS ONLY ZERO MEAT!!! We couldn't believe the shrimps were missing!! When we walked in a customer greeted us and said just take a seat. We order steamers they where good but not fantastic... we had to ask for bread and butter. Waited forever for our food! When we ordered we asked for extra lemon ... we received 1 wedge! We ordered the mix fried catch fish shrimp and scallops. They where baby baby scallops maybe the size of dimes about ten 3 small shrimp and a small over cooked piece of fish. We also order fried clams not enough to fill a hotdog bun! More then portion size everything came out cold! When waited forever! We also had two diet cokes the bill was 57.00 outrageous for size and quality of food! The fish market in the front is pretty terrible. A little pricey and fish isn't fresh. Purchased flounder and wild caught salmon on two separate occasions. Had to throw both out because it was too fishy. The restaurant in the back isn't anything to write home about either. The best things are often the simplest. This certainly holds sway for my meal last night at The Fish Store. Recently, they began serving sushi on Thursdays and it was with eager anticipation that I finally got to stop by. Allow me to say, I was shocked and thrilled by what I found. Often these days, sushi chefs seek to aggrandize their fish rather than celebrate it. They drown perfectly lovely toro in ponzu sauces, dribble the plates with oils, and layer so many flavors that they lose all of their beautiful individuality. This was Not true of the meal Masanori Niidate prepared for us last night. I had the chirashi, which was presented in a humble lacquered box, filled with skin-warm rice and covered with the freshest sashimi I had ever eaten. My fiancé ordered the sushi deluxe which contained no tricks. The flavors were pure, bright, and clean. The fish was the perfect temperature to actually TASTE each piece. It truly was the core of what good sushi should be. It was a perfect reduction of the art. My only slight negative was that the miso soup was overwhelmed by the amount of scallions that we're added to it. It is my understanding that it came from the kitchen, which explains much, as the American style of cooking usually dictates that "more is more". This is a meal not to be missed. A co-worker always mentioned this place as an affordable fish market/restsurant, so I told my wife let's take a drive. We arrived between lunch and dinner so it was empty but kept noticing cars kept streaming into the market so we thought the food would be good. Boy, we weren't disappointed...I had the lobster roll which was prepared a little differently than what my wife makes but it was fantastic, a huge brioche buttered hot dog bun filled with lobster knuckles/tail. The fries and cole slaw were, what can I say..wow! My wife had the chicken sandwich and salad which she raved about. We had a teenage boy busing the table and a he made a few mistakes but we smiled because he's hustling and learning his trade, it was refreshing to see kids making a buck! Had a hankering for fresh seafood, but decided on take-out instead of dining in. The woman on the phone was very friendly and patient with me when I had a huge order for our group. She even let me know exactly how long it would be before the order was ready. Seafood was well-packaged and nothing leaked. The food was delicious. You can tell everything was fresh. The seasonings were great and all items were well cooked. Prices are great! We fed 7 of us for $140. It would have been five stars for sure except for a few things. The steamers, served bucket style in a garlic wine sauce were a little sandy. I didn't care for the marinara sauce included with the calamari (too sweet) and they made one small mistake in our order.
