We had seen a few folks going in, and decided to stop by. 20-30 min wait on Sunday morning, not too bad I guess...hostess was very nice btw Once we are seated, it took 5-10 mins to get a drink. We waited another 30 for our food. You know when the waitress keeps apologizing for the delay, you know there's something not right. We looked around and noticed most people were having the same difficulty. Aside from that (which is somewhat tolerable) is the fact that the menu states clear as day on the front that it says "everything is made from scratch." Now, I realize not EVERYTHING is, but there are some non-negotiable items, in breakfast, that you can't say is scratch when it isn't. What I ordered was the chicken fried steak, two eggs, hash browns, and biscuit. These were "ok" to say the most. I mean, when I order those items, I expect the gravy to be killer! Not watered down gravy mix from a bag, luke warm, like I could get from a school cafeteria. Speaking of, the sausage patties my friend ordered were no better than Jimmy Dean ones from the little sausage biscuits you heat in the microwave. Folks, I don't know about you, but if you're gonna say you have fresh from scratch on the cover of your menu, you better bring it. I look at these other reviews on here and realize we aren't the only ones. I'd rather eat at Whataburger than go here. I definitely don't recommend to eat here. When they first opened I decided to make a breakfast stop for a goid french toast, easy side up eggs, coffee and OJ. The place was not entirely packed, the service was typical of a diner, not exactly speedy but served with an extra dose of sugar (bad for cholesterol but grear for the heart and to put you in thw good mood for the day). The food had been receiving rave reviews from everyone but, i must admit my daughter (champion of the french toast art) has got me spoiled rotten, so my rate would have to be 4*. So, why the final 3* you may ask... B3cause i went back for lunch and was supremely disappointed. It was so bad i don't remember what i asked for, though i remember the deep fried steak my friend got. True, she always has to complain about food bought in places she has not chosen to go (her idea of a good tex-mex is Abuelo's... which says it all), but her steak was truly NOT good at all... Once again... the service was slow but you can definitely define it as southern comfort style... "we mat take a while, but our smile, our bubbly attitude sweetness will win you over". If you want some good breakfast/brunch! They have some of the best in town besides iHop. They have amazing cinnamon pancakes and waffles. They are a bit slow; however, they make up for it with great waitresses. You have to give this place a try if you love breakfast food! read more

I don't get the bad reviews, so I'm guessing it can be hit or miss here. We went on a "hit" day. We had a one night stop in Abilene and were looking for breakfast the next morning. I thought I would try to find a place that could handle my Gluten free needs. I didn't expect to find a place that could do pancakes, waffles, breads, etc. This is a no-go zone for me normally. The restaurant was easy to find. Service was quick, friendly, efficient, and coffee was kept filled. And the best part? I had my first Chicken Fried Steak with gravy in over 3 years. If I wasn't so hungry, I would have got sentimental and cried! Everything else my family ordered, they said was delish--including regular pancakes, an amazing cinnamon roll, and the regular breakfasts they got. When going through Abilene, we will stop again. This place was and is a JOKE!!! My husband and I drove quite a ways off the path to get here. I could not be more disappointed. We arrived at 11:00 am and did not get served in until 11:45. Both my husband do not mind waiting if it's decent food. We both got the chicken fried steak and it was horrible. The underside was not cooked and covered still with flour. Heard all good about here from lady at Abilene Aero where our N126M parked today. Modern setting here. Great service. Cinnamon roll to start with..not very good I think. One bite enough. Looked good but..hopefully cinnamon pancakes are better. Flour and dough I would say are very aggressively processed. Like made out of some kind white powder that used to be flour. Waiter asked why I wasn't eating more and took it back so likely will not need to buy that one. The bread i roll seemed like some man made substance. Bacon is great sweet and smoky. We usually love this place--today we took my in laws for breakfast and ordered a cinnamon roll (usually delicious) and the cinnamon roll was just not good... the texture was different and the icing was different. I asked our waitress if hey had changed the recipe and told her it wasn't any good, (our waitress was very sweet) she got the manager who came out and said they couldn't comp it because they didn't change the recipe. What?? I didn't even ask her to comp it?? I just wanted to tell her that it sucked and they should go back to the old recipe. Even if they "didn't change the recipe", it was not good. And honestly, to keep a customer, you couldn't take off a, what, $3 cinnamon roll? The manager was just really weird, defensive and rude about it. She offered to get us a box to take the crap roll home. I said no thanks it was too gross to eat. Seemed silly to I was embarrassed to say it had been our favorite place. A bit crowded on Sunday morning as the brunch options in Abilene are limited but this place is well worth the wait. They have a few good gluten free options for those who prefer or need that. I enjoy the food and the coffee is great. The staff, however, are a bit gruff for my taste. Also, service is very poor. The last time I visited, my friend and I were asked if the check was going to be split before we even received our food. An inaccessible location and limited parking don't help their case either. The building is clean, but decent food and an enjoyable environment don't make up for everything else. The Flipping Egg is a relatively new establishment. Only a year or two new to Abilene. For the price you can find comparable fare at any of the breakfast places around town. The restaurant is very neat and clean and pleasant. The location is a little out of the way and easy to miss and the hours only accommodate breakfast and lunch. The Food: I was excited to try this place out for the first time. I'm not entirely impressed with my meal. I had the "Orginal" which consisted of 2 eggs cooked to your choice, I got them scrambled, 2 pieces of bacon (or your choice of meat), hashbrowns, and a choice of bread. I got the biscuits and gravy. Overall, the portions were very meager and most of my food was cold when it came out. Hasbrowns: cold. Tasted like they had been sitting for about 20-30 minutes. Eggs were more like 1 and 1/4 portions and cold throughout. Bacon was well cooked and tasty but nonetheless cold. The gravy on top of my biscuits and gravy had coagulated and thickened like it does when It has been sitting out but the biscuit itself was warm, not hot though. My whole meal was sort of like it had been already made and sitting at the servimg counter for a good 20-30 minutes. This was contrasted by my wife's delicious looking Grilled Chicken Salad which I never thought I would find myself envying rabbit food. The Service: staff friendly, attentive, and courteous. As I mentioned before the setting and atmosphere was nice and service good but the food was sorely lacking and not worth the price I paid. I could get better breakfast at any one of the other many decent breakfast houses in Abilene and will likely choose them in the future. Not a horrible experience but definitely not one I will be repeating. I give it 3/5 stars for good staff and good atmosphere. read more

I'm a little shocked at the low score for this restaurant. I've never had a bad meal here. I have only had breakfast items but its always fresh and homemade, with a few unique items like the Texas Benedict and the chicken and waffle sandwich. The decor is a little cheesy, but i guess they are going for a farm or country thing. Thats totally forgivable though, especially for the type of restaurant they are. The food was good. It took over an hour to get our food though. It wasn't busy, and several families came and left during our wait. One member of our group couldn't eat her food. Well it's my second time to eat here so I knew to order the cinnamon roll pancakes. I had eggs and bacon. The sausage from last time was really plain , no taste. My son got the waffles, cold and nothing special. It's not bad but nothing is memorable here. The restrooms are not clean and the parking lot is really tight. Though I understand this is a busy time, the restaurant was not full at all & there were plenty of empty tables; our food took almost 90 minutes to come out. Went on Mothers Day( me,my mom and my 9 month old)and it was delicious. Not alot of people there, was sitted immediately. The blueberry lemon pancakes are so good. Would give 0 stars if possible. My wife, daughter, and I visited this place for the first time today. The wait staff was friendly but seemed to be very over worked and streched thin. We ordered our food and when it came out my daughter's food had black pepper all over it and my daughter will not eat anything with pepper on because it's to hot for her. We kindly asked the waitress of they would mind making her some without pepper and we even offered to pay for both orders. She said she would ask but that the owner was in the kitchen so not to get our hopes up. As she walked away my wife and I were confused about this. When the waitress came back she said the owner refused to make the food without pepper because see viewed it as us trying to change her recipe. After talking to the waitress for a few seconds she informed us of how in this restaurant everything is NO and the owner makes it very difficult for the staff to please their customers. We asked if she would at least do it for a 4 year old little girl and she again refused. The owner never did out to talk to us directly, probably fearing what would happen. The waitress went on to say how miserable all the wait staff is but she stays because she makes good money. Her words were, "I work till 11 every day then go home and cry." Any establishment that should be service driven but refuses to cater to a customer request should not be in business. This is a restaurant for God sake and we couldn't even order food our daughter would eat. After our interaction with the waitress, the owner began eyeing us at our table, probably wanting to make sure we actually paid for everything, which we did. The food we did eat was ok, I've had much better. We informed the staff that helped us we would not be coming back and they were very apologetic. Still, the owner never spoke to us. We will hence forth refer to her as the Egg Nazi. I would definately recommend eating somewhere else that you can have your food made as requested. read more

Our first time here and the cinnamon roll pancakes were AWESOME!! Everything else was above average but a bit pricey. Unfortunately they discriminate against diabetics and charge extra for sugar free syrup. My husband eats low carb but likes a pancake every so often and full sugar syrup is too much for him. They were short staffed the day we went, but our server was trying his best (Dan? David? Good guy!) so minor oversights can easily be forgiven. The food was pretty good--everything was brought out correctly and FAST! Best of all, the food was terrific. Buttermilk pancakes were great, the eggs were made as requested, and the bacon...can't say no to bacon. Judging from other reviews, it seems that being understaffed is a regular thing, but the restaurant was also near-deserted when we went. I hope their circumstances improve. By far my favorite breakfast spot to take people in Abilene. Their menu boasts a variety of benedicts that are off the charts! The Texas Hash is spectacular, the cinnamon roll pancakes are spot on, honestly I've never had a bad meal here. Hadn't planned on eating here, especially after the reviews here, but my daughter in law said it was good and they had a lot of gluten free items for breakfast for her. So we went and I was surprised. I had the Texas Trash, hash browns with jalapeños, cheese, topped with 2 battered fried tomatoes, topped with 2 eggs, topped off with sausage gravy and 2 strips of bacon. It was good. Popped in for the first time to grab a late breakfast on Saturday. We were promptly seated, promptly brought an orange juice and 2 waters, and then promptly forgotten. After reading the entire Thrifty Nickel to my wife and ordering another water our waitress appeared with a profuse apology about not being told there was someone in her section. By then we were one of only two tables seated in the whole place. She stated that she was new and assisted us in ordering by reading the menu so that she understood what we wanted. The orders were prompt. We both ordered hash browns that were included in our meal and requested them extra crispy and what we got was an extra order of hasbrowns. My wife ordered a dish with japalinos and asked for them on the side. We got a side of japalinos for 59 cents. When we approached the waitress about the hasbrowns she removed them from our bill and then walked to the register and complained to the kitchen how 'they' had ordered extra hasbrowns. There was one table between us and the register so there was no filter on the volume of her complaint. Bottom line is that the decorations were cute. The atmosphere seemed a little bitcy (a lot of cackling by the staff about how bad their life is right now). The food was good though bland (Get the sweet potato pancakes). The portions were small for the price. The service sucked. I've heard others claim better service so go at your own risk & I wish you better luck. read more

Yes, they get busy at times and there are a few things that I'm not a fan of, but overall, I like eating here. We generally get the Texas Benedict which is awesome, and I always get a side of their homemade salsa (best in town!). The prices aren't out of line with the other breakfast places in town and we've always had good service. My only complaint is, it seems like they have trouble keeping help, just about the time we get to know a waitress, she's gone. My favorites are the Tx. Benedict, and the regular breakfast plates with any of the different flavored pancakes (the sweet cream are great, but they are pretty sweet). read more
