We've heard about the Fort for almost a decade now and decided to go this past weekend. We weren't disappointed. Despite seeing white linen tablecloths, a full place setting and lots of staff, the Fort felt amazingly casual. Folks were dressed in a variety of levels of comfort and not a soul seemed to mind. Staff were incredibly attentive while also being friendly and approachable. The views were great and no one minds if you walk outside for a bit, to savor the sunset. We also met a few Fort characters roaming around, happy to stop and talk with ya. One man was playing a flute, another man had some card games / magic and one fella looked like he belonged in a western movie. Super cool atmosphere. The food was also amazing. One thing to note, the Fort isn't cheap. We ordered a half order of Rocky Mountain oysters as an app, a sirloin with sides, a ribeye with sides, and each had two drinks. A bread basket also comes included. As long as you're expecting to pay $200 before tip and taxes, this is a great place to spend a day's night, a special occasion or to experience it. Just had an amazingly lovely evening at The Fort. Arrived a bit early for our reservation and was seated in the bar. Ordered drinks and a jalapeño peanut butter appetizer. Highly recommend the Jim Bridger it was fantastic. The place was hopping and several tables had paid their bills and were sitting and chatting. The Asst GM felt bad that we were waiting and brought us some appetizers while we waited. Everything we ate was expertly cooked and flavorful. The staff was attentive and took wonderful care of us. Special thanks you to Chris and Tyler for doing everything to make my parents 56th anniversary special and memorable. Great place, beautiful view, fabulous meal with bread and salad to start. Corey was our server and he was great. It is expensive, but you get a lot of food and I loved my bison filet. A good special occasion place. They do add 3% to the bill for kitchen staff. Historian Platter was an excellent way to start the experience. The guacamole and chips, Buffalo sausage and Rocky Mountain oysters were all very good, didn't care for the peanut butter jalapeños and really couldn't find any flavor in the Buffalo tongue. The Forts Game Plate was ordered with the meats cooked rare, and they were cooked perfectly. The Elk Chop was the highlight, so much flavor and as tender as can be!! Perfect! The Buffalo Sirloin was also flavorful and understandably not as tender but still very good. Quail was cooked as well as you could expect for such a little bird, maybe a bit dry. All accompanying items were prepared and cooked perfectly. In hindsight I would have asked for a little more of the Huckleberry Preserves. Very yummy. Bread Pudding and Creme Brûlée wrapped things up and were both yummy! I had Old Fashions which were excellent, and my brother had the Athletic non alcohol beer which is a great choice. Matt our server gradually warmed up to use as we took our time and did not want to rush anything. By the end of the meal he was more personable and engaging. His helper Isabel was a delight, always around to clear plates and get us anything we needed. She had a wonderful smile and was always busy helping guests and resetting tables. Ya' all have some work to do! The quality if the food needs to match the price, which is high. A $56 or $90 steak should cut like butter and be prepared to order. My New York Strip, ordered medium rare was cooked completely through and not fun to eat. I am a home cook and I could have cooked the steak so much better. Many years ago we ate here numerous times. Alone and in groups. It was always good. Until one time. I don't recall the details, but it must have been 20 years ago. We went for our anniversary last night and had a wonderful time. The menu and the wait staff were both excellent. The food was delicious. Comparable to Denny's or Perkins, but better service. I made reservations months ago for Thanksgiving, and I believe I was one of the first to do so. I requested a view table for me and my guests. A week before Thanksgiving I talked to the restaurant, and confirmed that I wanted a view table. When we arrived we were put in the back room (a small convention room of some type), and not even in the main dining area. What a disappointment! I actually apologized to my guests for this seating. It was an embarrassment. When leaving I asked how to I get a better table, and they said to request it. This was an outright lie, because that is exactly what I did. I understand that new ownership will take place later in 2025, and this is Great News. I was hoping to make this an annual Thanksgining tradition. I might try again in 2026, but until then I would not suggest going to The Fort. read more

The skinny: Unique old wild west vibes mixed with gorgeous mountain scenery. Solid food - a fun experience! Overview: We've heard a lot of this place - mainly that the experience is awesome but the food is bad. And I'm happy to say that we were very pleasantly surprised! The were right about the experience, its a fun and unique spot. Immersive wild west experience and the views from the back are gorgeous - highly recommend sitting outside on the back patio if you can. They also have fire pits, heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm. We ordered a few things: Historian's Platter, Roasted Bison Marrow Bones, Herb Butter Buffalo Tenderloin Filet Mignon, and The Fort's Game Plate. The Historian's Platter was a nice way to get a variety of items, you can try some rocky mountain oysters if you've never had them before. Overall solid but nothing to blow your socks off. The best was the buffalo tongue, we also got bison eggs instead of the guac cause they were out which was a solid choice. The bone marrow is a must have. If you like bone marrow at all - these are huge and delicious with some crostini. A full order comes with 4 large bones - I'd highly recommend. For entrees the fort game plate was solid and allowed you to try a few things, but nothing too crazy. The herb butter buffalo tenderloin filet is where its at. If you like butter and tender meat this is what you should get. Overall great vibes + solid yummy food. Ambiance/value: A++ on ambiance. Friendly and knowledgeable servers. Note it is steakhouse expensive prices so maybe for a special occasion or to bring visitors. The fort has a great story as well and it is fun to explore around. I usually wait 24 to 48 hours before posting a review so I can digest my meal and "digest" the experience. No need on this one. Two and a half hours....to eat dinner and dessert! Two and a half hours of absolute.....BLISS! If you plan to come to this wonderful restaurant, don't expect a quick "in-n-out". Take your time and enjoy every minute of this experience! They pace your meal perfectly and its delightful! My wife and I had never eaten at The Fort but--being Colorado Natives--have always wanted to. It did NOT disappoint! We arrived a half hour early of our reservation to sit at the bar and have a glass of wine but the sit-down bar was closed. Note: its only open on Fridays and Saturdays. We got seated immediately by a very friendly host, We were seated on the patio which has a fantastic view. Atmosphere was low key and, while not muted, very mellow and relaxing. We were greeted by Emma who would "be assisting our Server Tyler". After chatting a bit we learned she had been there a year and it was her favorite restaurant she had worked at. You could tell because she was happy to be there and it showed. Our server, Tyler, arrived with the drink and app menu. The menu was explained--with recommendations. My wife ordered a glass of wine from the "wine bible"-an EXTENSIVE wine list. I ordered the Trade Whiskey. Bourbon, red pepper, tobacco and gun powder--yes I said gun powder! I'm not a whiskey guy but felt like I needed to do it to stay in the moment. VERY good! Tyler, though a little soft spoken, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He made us feel right at home and welcome. A little later came the appetizer. We had the Empanadas and I'm a bit of a snob about emenadas. These were fantastic! The pastry was unbelievably flaky and buffalo filling was delish! It came with two sauces. A tomatillo based and a tomato based. The tomatillo was a little sharp and tangy but I'm not a huge tomatillo fan. The tomato sauce was unreal good! Fantastic pairing with the buffalo. We ordered our meals--My wife: Mountain meets the Sea (Buffalo and Lobster) and I ordered the Game Plate (Buffalo, Elk, and Quail). We also ordered a side of mac and cheese (Spoiler Alert: OH...MY...GAWD!) Tyler informed us that he wouldn't put the order in until we were close to done with our app which was fantastic. One of my peeves is when you are just getting started on an appetizer and my meal arrives. Now the food. Couldn't have been more delicious! The meat was cooked perfectly (rare for me. Medium rare for the wife). The lobster was juicy and well cooked. The buffalo was a little tough but it is a sirloin so that's to be expected. The elk chop was perfect! Melted in my mouth. The quail was my least favorite but not because anything the kitchen did. Just not my thing. The only complaint I have is that the potatoes were a bit salty and I love salt. And the mac and cheese? Mouthwatering. We ended the night with the strawberry cream Creme Broulee. I thought it would be too sweet but it was delectable! To sum up: THANK YOU Tyler and Emma and the rest of the Fort crew! This restaurant is located inside of an old historic fort. It is located off of the beaten path about, 35 minutes outside of downtown Denver. They have a decent sized private parking lot and very nice courtyard that has some photo ops. The restaurant has a huge dining area and indoor patio seating. There is also a full service bar as well. They have posted operating hours, but hey close pretty much after the last reservation for the night. With that being said, reservations are pretty much a must. I arrived about 30 minutes after the last reservation and luckily they were able to seat me anyway. I was seated by the fireplace, which was very cool. They have some of the most friendly and attentive staff around. My server, Lynn, was awesome. She was on point and at the top of her game. The restaurant id known for their exotic wild game food such as Rocky Mountain oysters, AKA bison balls, rattlesnake, rabbit,elk, Buffalo, quail, and trout. They also serve steaks. The restaurant has a full bar with some savory signature cocktails and mock tails, in addition to a small dessert selection. I ordered some Buffalo tongue to kick things off and Santa Fe Game Trial Plate which included an Iberian pork chop, a rattlesnake/rabbit brat, a buffalo sirloin and fort potatoes. It did not take long to get the tongue, and it was about 15 minutes. I must admit it was delicious and if you are wondering what the rattlesnake/rabbit brat tasted like, it tasted like a regular brat. I did not notice anything different. The buffalo tongue was delicious. I highly recommend it. Come to think of it, the entire meal was delicious. I loved every bite. Now, you may be asking, what's the catch. I will say that this place has earned each of its 4 dollar signs. It is a bit on the pricey end and can be considered fine dining, with a casual vibe. I has also earned its high rating and each of the five stars that I am giving it too. I really like this restaurant's outdoorsy/lodge vibe. They have some unique and amazing food, a top notch staff, smooth/laid back ambiance, and savory drinks. This may not be an everyday thing, but it is worth splurging and visiting once in a while. The Fort is a great restaurant I feel for newcomers to Colorado and an overall unique experience with the historians walking around to give you some history and great views. I am toggling between a 3 and 4 rating because this is the first time I found myself disappointed in the meal. One of my favorite appetizers is the Hot Sausage Bean dip. It was dry. . And I usually go for a steak or a combo game type plate. This time, I ordered the Idaho Trout, and it was very dry even after adding the sauce. Both overcooked. Now my friends' dishes were perfect, they ordered the Buffalo Ribs and The Mountain meets the Sea and both plates were cooked perfectly and tasted great. The Mac and cheese was tasty, they said, as well as the rocky mountain oysters. I at some point will revisit and cross my fingers for a tastier experience. read more

We were in Colorado Springs and decided to drive up by Denver to The Fort Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant has a great Decore and feeling when we walked in. Started off with the Historian Platter for 2 of us. a sampler platter of buffalo sausage (Boudies), The Fort's famous guacamole with tortilla chips, rocky mountain oysters, buffalo tongue on crostini, and peanut butter stuffed pickled jalapeños. The Mountain Man sausage platter that comes with a selection of Antelope, Rattlesnake/Rabbit sausages, and Buffalo Sausages served with beer/mustard dipping sauce. The Fort's Game Plate came with a bone-in elk chop, buffalo sirloin medallion, and a grilled teriyaki quail. Served with seasonal vegetables, and Fort potatoes, and wild Montana Huckleberry Preserves. Topped off with Creme Brulee for dessert. The service was excellent with very nice staff. I've driven past this place several times to go hiking nearby but have never actually eaten here until recently when it was recommended by some friends of ours. It's a gorgeous location and I love the design and the history behind it. However, the interior decor is pretty dark and dated. The beautiful view and amazing food and drinks make up for most of the outdated feeling though. Their cocktails and wine/alcohol menu are amazing and the food is even better. Our server Mikayla was very knowledge, attentive and friendly. We started with the Mountain Man Sausage Platter which was great. I liked trying all different kinds of meat and the dipping sauces were good. The Hot Sausage Bean dip was amazing and I wish we would've ordered a full size instead of a 1/2 order. I started with a pomegranate martini which was way too dry for my taste but was pretty good -- I just would've preferred more pomegranate flavor/sweetness. I had a glass of Merlot with dinner and I can't remember the name but it was light and floral and fruity and the perfect complement to my steak. All entrees come with a Fort Bread basket and a house or Cesar salad. The pumpkin walnut muffins were delicious and the dinner rolls were good too - all served piping hot with whipped butter. My Cesar salad was fresh and yummy. After our appetizers, bread and salad I was feeling pretty full but I went ahead and ordered the William Bent's Buffalo Filet Mignon Aux Poivre. The filet was as tender as stated on the menu and practically melted in my mouth. The peppercorn sauce was amazing! The snap peas were delicious but I substituted the potatoes for an order of the President Jefferson's Favorite Green Chile Mac N' Cheese which was to die for. The pasta was cheesy and delicious and had just the right amount of kick with the green chilies. I was way too full to try any of their delicious sounding desserts and opted for a boozy coffee cocktail instead which was amazing. I couldn't find it on the menu to reference it by name but it had like four different kinds of alcohol and was served hot. My husband had the Holly's Adobe Sundae which was really good - the ice cream was super creamy and delicious and the great way to end dinner. We will absolutely be back. Be prepared to spend money when you come here but know that it will be worth every penny. read more

First time eating (or being) at The Fort. We did book on OpenTable (recommended on their website) to ensure we got a table at a time we wanted. They do salt the pathways as it had snowed recently. The hostess was friendly and we had a fantastic waiter. He answered all of our questions. I really liked that he helped me decide (the menu is pretty large) and was very satisfied with my choice. We started with the bone marrow (half order) which comes with 2 bones and definitely enough for 2 people. It was prepared well and very satisfying. You get small toasted bread points to put the marrow on. We also had the house guacamole. It is freshly made and has some heat with jalapeno in it. You get tortilla chips to scoop it all up. Green goodness. I had a glass of the red sangria. It had a bit of sweetness but was perfect for what I wanted to drink. They also offer a white sangria. My wife tried the agave margarita and enjoyed it. All dinners come with dinner rolls and pumpkin muffins served with butter. The pumpkin muffins were my favorite and not overly sweet. You also get a house salad with choice of dressing. It comes with mixed greens, pickled ginger, diced jicama and pepita seeds. You don't see ginger in a salad that often. I liked it; my wife was not a fan of it. My wife had the crispy pork belly and it was cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetables it was accompanied with were all spot on. I had the Fort Game plate and had my fill of meats. The elk and buffalo medallions were cooked a perfect medium rare. The elk had more flavor as the buffalo is so lean. The teriyaki quail was not overly sweet and had more meat than I had anticipated. The skin was also crispy. The huckleberry preserves and Fort potatoes made for a complete meal. Definitely a special event restaurant. Will come back again. There is some parking around the building and a lot for overflow. read more

This is a very interesting restaurant. My friend had listed this place as a cool restaurant that looked like a fort so I booked a reservation. On our drive there we read the history about the place that was posted online and made us felt like a tourist trap. Behind the dramatic adobe fort, there were vendors on the side to sell crafts items and the decor felt outdated. It was actually good that we still proceed to dine inside. The service was very friendly and the experience was truly one of a kind. The view was beautiful. The folks there genuinely want to preserve the civil war era culture or relive that time. We saw some teepees set up for festivities. There were dancers and live music. My friend ordered the green chili Mac and cheese and I ordered the elk steak. The meat was decent, the steamed veggies were a bit soggy. The bear blood cocktail was good. The spiked huckleberry lemonade was very sweet. I felt feeling like the decor was a bit too over the board and outdated, but there is genuine spirit of culture preservation behind the operation. If eating at a adobe home with a civil war era story is your cup of tea. The fort is definitely the place. read more

Great setting for what used to be a good place for a special occasion. Now it seems they're going through the motions living off past reputation. The food: eh to okay. Nothing special. Canned vegetables next to a thick scoop of garlic potatoes. The meat is decent but way overpriced. If you want different or exotic go to Buckhorn Exchange in Denver. Service was okay. Despite advance reservation noting "special occasion" our first offered table was a little 2-top wedged next to a storm window. Second try was a bit better. I came to The Fort to celebrate my boyfriend and I's anniversary and wow what a unique exterior that matched the name of the restaurant so well! Our server Adam was so sweet and had the best recommendations as it was our first time there. We started off with the Historian Platter, which had a great assortment of their popular appetizers. It was a great value to try a little bit of everything, and I did enjoy everything except the peanut butter stuffed jalapeños mostly because they were chilled, but the flavor was delish! The salad was divine with the chipotle honey dressing, super fresh and don't even get me started on the pumpkin muffins that come on the side! For my main course I had the duck which was so tender and flavorful, however I wasn't a big fan of the wild rice. The Fort has long been an excellent destination restaurant with wonderful and interesting meats and game. You would go for the food and the view. We went to celebrate my boyfriend's son's birthday. I'm sorry to say that they have really lost their edge. The food is just okay, nothing exciting and the prices are very high. We started our meal with the sausages plate and the marrow bones. The sausages were okay, and a couple of them were very dry, although the mustard and red condiments were really interesting and yummy (I am a sauce girl). The marrow bones were charred nicely, but the marrow was not rendered properly in the middle, I want to say gloopy and not smooth. They were very accommodating our individual desires for our entrees, thank you to our wonderful server! The meats were all cooked nicely. The side dishes were lackluster. They did comp one dessert for the birthday boy which was very nice. He selected the chocolate cake which was okay and the crème Brule. All in all, a very average, yet expensive meal. I'm glad I got to try one of the time tested restaurants in the Denver area lets you know you are really in the Rocky Mountains. It was a pleasant and memorable experience. Service was exceptional. Thanks Marissa, who did such a fantastic job of keeping things timed perfectly and making such great recommendations on what to sample, eat and drink. As you may know, the Fort was built to replicate Bent's Fort on the Santa Fe Trail and is one of the largest adobe buildings around. Inside the atmosphere is rustic elegance. It is a bit touristy with a card trick guy hitting up tables and a small cannon going off on the half hour, but it is all part of the show. Food wise you come here for wild game and other stuff you just don't get anywhere else. For starters, the margaritas were alright, a bit watered down for us, but a nice way to absorb all the menu offerings. Joseph's (named for Kit Carson's wife) Empanadas were delicious, puff pastry, hot, juicy wonderful. Marissa suggested the butter Bison tenderloin and it was also exceptional. I expect part of that was everything in the plate was swimming in butter. The potatoes with beans were good, but a bit soggy. The accompanying sugar snap peas were overcooked, salty. Exceptional wine list and those wines on sale were a bargain. If you live in or are visiting Denver, the Fort is a must stop destination. read more

We had a great Friday night at The Fort, celebrating our cousin Maranda's belated birthday. I partook in the Denver restaurant week three course offer, while everyone else ordered off of the main menu. Every time we go, I must order Julia Child's favorite appetizer on the menu "Prairie Butter" (bison bone marrow, served in femur bones with crostini). Apparently Ms. Child's niece lived in Denver, and when she came to visit she always ordered this decadent treat. The Fort is a great place to try local Colorado game. Among the four of us, we tried sausages made from rattlesnake, rabbit, antelope, and bison. Bison sirloins, elk sirloins, and roasted quail. Don't forget to try the "Trade Whiskey" cocktail that is flavored with red pepper, tobacco, and black gunpowder! Our server Brielle was amazing! The Fort has a storied history, and is a must-stop for "new to the West" out-of-town guests. read more

A dear friend treated two of us having birthdays to a scrumptious dinner here tonight. It's a lovely venue and has a high quality menu of game meat. I had elk that was done to perfection and was so moist and tasty paired with green beans and potatoes. Got back from my "family emergency trip" to Florida right in time for my wedding anniversary. I guess Hubby missed me and we decided to go someplace "special " for dinner. We picked The Fort. We had only been one other time, and that was over 15 years ago. The Fort is located near the cool, little town of Morrison, Colorado. The setting and views are wonderful. Reservations are required but they are at full capacity. We started with the spicy bean dip which was really yummy. Being the good Southern girl that I am, I had a Georgia Mint Julep cocktail. We had bread and muffins, and really good salads. I ordered a filet mignon, medium, and got President Jefferson's Green Chile Mac and Cheese. It was cooked as ordered and very juicy. Hubby got the Buffalo BBQ ribs with the Fort potatoes. He really enjoyed his meal. Because it was our anniversary, we each got a free dessert. Mine was the Chocolate Chile Bourbon cake (chocolate and bourbon...I mean right?) Hubby got the Cheesecake. The service was great and our server quieted everyone in the room to announce our anniversary and also another couple's anniversary as well. I have been to the Fort approx. eight times over a twenty year period. Always love going there for the delicious food and unbeatable views. This visit however the wild game was not at its best. My wife had the Buffalo and it was tender and very good. Unbelievably good. Highly recommend if you go here. The kids and I had the snake and rabbit appetizer and we fell in love. So good. We also got the Elk Chops with a side of Quail. It was my mistake to not ask for the jam to be on the side and not under the Elk Chops. For me, it ruins the taste of the meat when it's already lathered in the sauce. The Elk was sort of tough and chewy unlike what I remember from past visits. Bummer. The Quail is soaked in Teriyaki which absolutely destroyed that poor little birds natural great taste. A little salt and pepper with sauce on the side would be nice. So lesson learned on Quail ordering from the Fort. The Elk was salty as well. Not stoked on this go around. View never changes however :) read more

While the ambiance and views are great, the food was terrible. I would give our eating experience a negative grade if I could.

Went for bday specifically for the bison prime rib special. We were there at 5pm on Sunday. We are informed after we ordered drinks that they are out of the bison prime rib due to sales on sat night. A Huuuuuge let down for our table as that's what we came for and you don't expect to run out at the opening time of the restaurant. Our waitress was way too flippant about our disappointment to the point that her demeanor became annoying and seemed almost sarcastic as the meal progressed. We seriously considered leaving after our cocktails but didn't know where we'd go without a reservation on a Sunday evening. The waitress apologized but that doesn't really help when that what we came for. The manager offered a gift certificate for the future but we will have to wait till the prime rib is a feature again who knows when that will be. The food we did get was only ok. The lamb was well under the "medium that was ordered. The rare T bone had non detectable seasoning and had no sear (see photo) the medium was better on the sear but neither was an exciting piece of meat. The buffalo ribs were the only highlight and luckily they were the choice of the day girl! She was given a free dessert but the crème brûlée was not smooth and silky it had a grainy texture. Legendary spot. Legendary meats. Legendary ambiance. This well-preserved relic of westward migration felt right off the Oregon trail. Went with the elk which did not disappoint. Came with a side of well-spiced snap peas and the house potatoes, both of which hit the spot. The excellent service and other historical elements built into this restaurant were the icing on the cake. Only regret was not spending more time there to explore. read more
