We had an absolutely amazing birthday dinner while visiting from Florida! From the moment we walked in, everyone was so friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The house-made whiskey was beautifully crafted, incredibly smooth, and such a wonderful touch. My husband had the elk, and I had the lobster and steak, and we both enjoyed every single bite. Everything was outstanding--from the food and ambiance to the incredible staff and service. And then came dessert... the brownie and ice cream was honestly the best I have ever eaten! It was the perfect way to end an already incredible meal. The food was so good that it honestly makes me want to fly back to Colorado just to eat here again! This was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a very long time. We truly appreciated the attentiveness, friendly atmosphere, and care that went into making our evening so special. Oh. My. God. This place is amazing. Had the best glass of wine in my life. And the ribeye steak was a 12/10. No notes. Additionally, they had a limited edition chimichurri sauce that was the best chimichurri sauce I've ever tasted. Everyone was super friendly and the vibe inside was fun. They also had a patio that looked cute. They also had a great selection that wasn't steak if red meat isn't your thing--the chicken linguini Alfredo was to die forrrrr. Black Hat is a nice restaurant but the food was disappointing. My pork chop was poor. I brought this to the attention of my server and it was removed from my bill. My son had the dry aged ribeye. It was listed as market price--which we should have checked what the cost would be. It came out at $110, which was excessive for what it was, marginal. The bread pudding desert was not freshly made. The ice cream was good though. For such a high-end restaurant, it was pretty disappointing. I wouldn't be rushing back. read more

We are very excited that they've reopened. We ate there on Friday and had a delicious meal. The only hitch was the kitchen lost our ticket so we had to wait forever. The waitress was more upset than we were but it wasn't her fault. The manager comped our entire meal which we didn't expect. It was a very nice surprise. It was so buttery and mouth watering. I absolutely recommend it. I had the fillet oscar style. It did not disappoint. One of the best steaks I've had in a long time. My father ordered the cowboy ribeye. Delicious and perfectly cooked steaks. For sides I had the baked potato with all the toppings. Also my father had the corn. It's so good. I hate to sound like *that* person, but I was really disappointed with my experience here and feel compelled to save someone else from wasting their time and money. Given this place's reputation for quality meat, I was shocked at how forgettable the ribeye was--no seasoning, overcooked, bland, and just bad. I'd chalk it up to an off night, but the disappointments kept piling up. The owner seems to run a tight, cost-conscious operation... Servers weren't able to offer recommendations because they're not allowed to taste the food unless they buy it themselves. (In hindsight, maybe that's part of the business strategy--calling the food "meh" would be generous.) Also, if you're celebrating something special, don't expect a complimentary gesture--this is not the place for that. I get that mountain town service has its quirks, but yikes. Maybe check IDs more carefully, and maybe don't announce specials at full volume right next to a table deep in conversation. On the flip side, if anyone ever wants an easy fallback plan for running a restaurant in the mountains, standards seem low enough that people will tolerate mediocrity simply for the convenience of the location. read more

The Old West found its roots right here! Rodeo and cowboy meet Frontiersman and trapper!! Lots of animal taxidermy line the walls including elk, moose and bison. Saddles and hats are nicely displayed around the rooms along with lots of Western decor and artwork. What an impressive menu!! The focus is on beef, primarily their Cowboy Ribeye (personally my favorite cut of meat) which is dry aged in house and cooked to perfection, but other options like trout, chicken, shrimp are available with a good array of side dishes. We started off with escargot and shrimp cocktail appetizers which were really well done! Most of our orders were the Cowboy or the filet and all were cooked perfectly and seasoned really well. I split a wedge salad with my colleague and it was really wonderful fresh and tasty. The blue cheese was incredible. My steak was beautifully grilled and tender as expected. I was not disappointed. Dessert options were many and we all shared a bite here and there to fully appreciate the fare. Amazing and attentive service by Ken for our party of 8 adults and the owner Dave popped by to say hello in true cowboy fashion; humble and quiet. I've heard nothing but great things about this place so when an opportunity arose to take 2 friends out for their birthday dinners, I suggested the Black Hat Cattle restaurant. The atmosphere is comfortable with several dining areas and a lodge style decor. Our party of four decided to order a bottle of Hahn Pinot Noir which we finished quickly so we ordered another. Our server was very friendly and attentive, he knew the birthday celebrators. I was the last to order and still undecided, my friends and the waiter all suggested the aged ribeye. I was reluctant since the market price was $75, however, I ordered it along with the Yukon gold mashed potatoes. I also ordered the French onion soup. Everything was served hot and was delicious. My friends ordered steaks: a New York strip and the ladies each ordered a Filet Mignon. We spent a comfortable two plus hours at our table and never felt rushed. It is a long and winding drive from Denver to Black Hat Cattle. So why put yourself through that? The staff is friendly, the food is good, the stuffed animal heads on the wall and western art are interesting. Feel free to wear your cowboy hat if you have one, as it will be welcomed here. Four of us had the small filet and we all enjoyed it. It is pricey at $45, but I think the cost is somewhat less than the majority of steakhouses in Denver. Wine list is just ok. read more

Rachel was our server. We had a group of seven counting the two kids. She was very helpful to everyone and happily gave her recommendations which were spot on. We were there towards the end of the evening and she still made us feel very comfortable and not rushed at all. The food was great. I raise specialty cattle finished out on a custom ration to produce the finest steaks for our family, so, seldom do I ever find a restaurant that serves a steak as good as I am accustomed to eating at home. I will mention two of the cuts we had, the first being the ribeye. It was trimmed to perfection by the owner/meat cutter. There was the perfect amount of fat remaining and every single bite was tender and delicious with zero waste. I ordered mine medium rare and it came cooked perfectly. The other cut I will mention was part of the surf and turf special. That was the Wagyu strip. This cut is beyond tender and has that tremendous, dry aged flavor you would expect as the premiere item at the finest restaurants, yet, was offered as part of the special. Everything was better than expected. Some will think the prices are expensive, but, at the time we dined, cattle prices were setting all time records and an unprepared steak of this quality from a premium beef seller can be $30.00 and up, so, I believe the prices were very fair considering the entire experience our family had. This place is great. This is a restaurant in the mountains that seems to be completely out of place in this town of a little over a thousand people. I found the food to be as good as steakhouse I've frequented and the staff is top tier - waiters, bartenders especially. And the prices are very fair. But the best part of the experience is the ambience of the restaurant. Everything is old western including saddles, cowboy equipment and old pictures. Bit of a drive from Golden but well worth it. A few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon we stopped in and had one of the best meals I've ever had in Colorado in 16 years. Everything was perfect from the sides to the flawless drinks and main event amazing cowboy steak. This is now a place I look forward to visiting again! Well worth the trip from Castle Rock (40 miles) to have one of the great steaks of Colorado. Interesting drive through some spectacular countryside. Narrow winding roads so you need to be careful. We had a great table right in the front window and started with great drinks made with huckleberries straight from Montana. Delicious is not adequate. The soup (French Onion) and the salads were very well prepared and extra large. Might want to split the salad as it is a challenge to eat. I chose the ribeye steak (medium rare) and my spouse chose the Wagu filet. Both were perfect in quality and taste. My Montana rib eye was a more than generous cut. They butcher their steaks themselves and age their beef - what's not to like about that? I should have taken pictures but the ones already on this site are accurate. Baked potatoes are the way to go - big and done perfectly. I ordered a side of mushrooms and it was enough for 2-3 people. Leave room for dessert please - the huckleberry bread pudding is to die for - fresh and delicious. Never saw this on any menu but would order it again in a heartbeat. It's a must-try item. They do have a wine menu, but there was so much great on the menu that we didn't feel it necessary to order any. Come and be prepared to eat wonderful food, properly prepared, and in more than generous quantities. You will not be disappointed. By the way, the service was perfect - our server was attentive but not intrusive. Great place to celebrate any occasion with family and friends. read more

Come on people. Let's be honest here. The atmosphere is a great old west feel. Like a cool 1970's old west higher end steak house. Cool decor and good mood lighting and old school country music overhead. Really a great vibe. The service is also great - nice and attentive staff. But the food is generous at 3 stars. I live nearby. I've visited 3 times over the past 12 years. Same each time. I had the tomohawk chop $99 steak. I am not wrong when I say this steak, while definitely cooked to the proper medium rare with a good sear - tasted about like a steak I would have eaten at a ponderosa steak house in the 80's. And this is the exact same experience I've had every time with three different cuts. Meat was tough and felt like a lower grade. Now that said if you kind of like that old timey steak thing then you'll be happy. And the sides were good and the loaded potato was excellent. Sorry - I'm sure some ( especially the older set) will disagree. But I'm no spring chicken and I'm telling you this is an accurate review. read more

My step dad and I are here for a softball tournament and we stopped here on our last night and I have to tell you the service was amazing, the waitress came to our table every 5 min asking us if we needed anything, the appetizers ..Omgsh the little steak bits with the bread was so fricken good. They get a 1 because the old fashion was good. The meal was disappointing. I ordered a rib eye and wedge salad. I asked for a medium per their instruction on their menu, it came out raw. I ate around the outside and left the rest. If it had any flavor, I would have asked to cook the red meat left on my plate. But there was zero flavor so not worth it. Also It was supposed to be a Rib Eye and there was zero marbling? That was curious I can only guess it was dark in the kitchen and they grabbed what ever was there. The wedge salad was not a wedge salad, It was chopped up wilted iceberg lettuce with some bacon and a very runny blue cheese dressing. I left most of that as well. Sometimes you need a great steak. This is the place to get it. I had the filet medallions with bernaise sauce & baked potato. I ordered it rare and it was done perfectly.
