This place is the shit. Frankenstand has been around for 20+ years and I get why! His hot dogs are incredible! He always has specials dogs like the scarecrow and the scaryaki! Plus you can make your own creation and add whatever sauces or toppings you want. The hot dog quality is incredible and I can't get enough. He even made a bowl for me to stay low carb! They weren't open yet but we were so intrigued that we had to make a return to feast on our prey! Lightning strikes of hunger pangs drew us back to #theFrankenstand where we bought 2 hot dogs ( they had so many flavors some were even sold out for the day they were so popular like the beer battered bratwurst !) These Hot Dogs WERE SO DELICIOUS ! Like Terrifyingly delicious ! The only thing scarier perhaps would be a real meat hot dog - yikes ! I had never tried vegan hot dogs, until trying their deliciously haunted dogs here; now I'm sold. They immediately won me over with "The Scarecrow": corn on top, vegan cotija cheese, a light drizzle of sriracha mayo garnished with green onion, and a wedge of lime to really make those flavors pop! In downtown LA, I can smell the bacon-on-hotdog stench from a mile away. But thanks to The Frankenstand, I've finally found peace. Why? Because they rock that hotdog stand life, but it's VEGAN. Not just vegan, the entire setup just has a lot more class about it than a random dude at 1am with a pushcart grill. I mean where do those street dog guys even store the meat anyway, in their coat pockets or something? It's just gross. The Frankenstand is a huge cart with all the amenities necessary to rock your taste buds off. The Frankenstand is a one man show that generally offers three standard vegan hotdogs all named after the classic horror films of yesteryear. The Wolf, the Witch, the Creature, the Swamp Thing. I think there's more that he swaps in and out. I've come across this cart maybe 5 or 6 times and the result is ALWAYS tasty. Check out the photos, these dogs are loaded up. Relish, onions, veganaise, mustards and even fake bacon. This is legit hotdog game here, my friends. If you see this stand out and about just do yourself a favor, pop off on one of these vegan badboys and tell me it's not delicious. I finally got to try frankenstand and it was pretty delicious. I've had a couple of veggie hotdogs over the years but they've all been pretty dry to pretty disgusting but this place definitely knows how to make it tasty. They came to where I work last week and everyone was totally in love. I got the creature for 3 bucks and added jalapeno, sauerkraut, tomatoes, onions and cabbage for toppings and for sauces, I put some ketchup, spicy mustard, and a special hot sauce. It was really good and I really loved the theme of everything. He even brought out a little boom box and played halloween themed music which was pretty cool. read more

I wanted to like Frankenstand because it is creative and looks cool. But what made me dislike Frankenstand was the bad attitude that goes along with the vegan hot dogs. Reviewers beware: if you write a critical (instead of glowing) review of this place, the Frankenstand will come out of the basement laboratory and send you a private message on Yelp and will tell you that "you are making a fool out of yourself." The BEST vegan hot dogs, with the BEST vegan condiments, and the BEST (and most festive) owners. I finally got to try the Frankenstand at the LA Vegan Beer Festival this weekend and I was such a happy camper. I'm one of those people who doesn't seek after very many vegan eats. I love me a good bacon-wrapped hot dog...and if you top it with some chili, I could just about swoon. However, the Frankenstand is a wonderful alternative! I kept it simple with "The Creature," their regular vegan hot dog. After a quick little chat and hello with the nice folks who own and operate the stand, I moseyed on over to their awesome condiments table where I loaded up with Veganaise (which is great), fake bacon bits, and some ketchup. They also offered chipotle mayo, relishes, onions, corn salsa, sauerkraut, and other sour and savory things. While the hot dog didn't have that snap that I like from the casing, the flavors were very good and not too "health food-y." Most certainly the best vegan hot dog I have tried. The bacon bits really helped with giving it a little more texture and the bun was soft and warm. For $3, this was a very good deal. Tracking the life of mobile cuisine in LA these days is like a full time job. I've given up on trying them all. Now, I just single out a few that have caught my fancy. The Franken Stand, with an all 100% plant-based gourmet roster, had become the most recent apple of my eye. After much twittering and coordinating, I finally tracked down The Franken Stand at the monthly downtown LA Art Walk. I was on high alert, texting my friend the day before of the schedule. After hitting a live performance of Gustavo (oh, the hair!) at the LA Phil which my friend scored tix to, we meandered our way to the hipster arts scene a few blocks down and tracked him (not them) down. It was a one man show. With an entourage of scary things. My friend and I each ordered The Wolf ($3), a zesty vegan chipotle spiked dog. I turned and saw a sea of interesting condiments, all vegan of course. I didn't want to completely kill of the flavor of my dog so I started off light with a squeeze of spicy brown mustard, a smattering of relish, a few squirts of veganaise and a couple of jalapenos. I turned to my non vegetarian friend, who had started on her dog and saw her give the nod of approval. "I hate the taste of vegetarian things trying to be meat, but this is something else - really good!" she said, chomping down on her Wolf dog. It was delicious and wolf friendly but you just have to catch them! Twitter works best. Next time I'm getting the witch: a sausage made with tofu and micro brewed full Sail Ale. A vegan hot dog? IT'S ALIVE!!! IT'S ALIVE! So this is a very interesting concept. It's a vegan hot dog stand. I know what you're thinking.. only in L.A. Someone clearly picked up an abby-normal brain when putting this Frankenstein monster together. Though I have to say, it's actually pretty good, and it has a bit o a novelty / kiche factor, so all you hipsters who aren't down with the eating of red meat, you have this going for you. It has been probably the best tasting vegan hot dog I have had. Though i choose not to have many, for while I don't look down on them (that much), I don't mind a little murder to fill my stomach. The personality of this truck is what gives this stand a life of its own. Consider it a little bit as if Eddie Munster grew up, decided to hang out in Silverlake too long and wanted to open a hot dog stand. It's also really cheap. Maybe that Frankenstein of a father didn't teach him much about the value of money.. Either way, it's really cheap, it's pretty good.. and especially nice for when you're entertaining the idea of hanging with folks who don't partake in the eating of the flesh..... .... but have no problem with goth looking hot dog carts that look like they belong outside of the Haunted Mansion at Disney. read more

My greatest experience of the summer has to have been finding the Frankenstand at the Downtown LA Artwalk. I have long yearned to run across the stand on my nocturnal wanderings and it finally happened. Words cannot describe the feelings of elation that came over me when I saw the spooky "sausage" vendor. I love Frankenstand for more than just the food (and food is rarely just about food anyway): 1. He's always at all the events I'm at. In fact the descriptions he gives on his sign are pretty much word for word off the package. Haters gonna hate!!! The theme is awesome. The stand is totally indie and with out any commercial influence. Franken can be found at cool venues like free drive-in movies and animal rights events. He always has tasty sodas and excellent condiments. He actually gives a shit if you enjoy the food, which is rare. Kudos for the fact that he set up such a cool stand that allows me, as a vegan, to enjoy quick and easy food that carnivores can get on any corner in Los Angeles. When I first went vegan it crossed my mind that I'd never be able to stand on a dirty street corner with a fully loaded weiner in my hand and mustard dripping down my face and onto my clothes ever again. I'll admit that this realization was a bleak moment for me. But Frankenstand changed all that. I can't count how many times I've been overcome with pure bliss seeing their adorable cart blaring raunchy/spooky 50s monster jams. At art openings, movies, street truck fests, etc. Frankenstand has made me feel like the fully-realized, hot-dog gobbling maniac I deserve to be. I don't care what brand the franks are. The beauty is in the presentation and the love with which they are prepared. These people do so much to fight against animal cruelty, and there's real heart and kindness behind their cause. The Frankenstand definitely wins the prize for the strangest gourmet hot dog stand theme of...(drumroll) Classic monster movies! The dude selling me franks was dressed in theme, the stand is decorated as such and the dogs are named after classic horror characters. I LOVE meat. I pack burgers and whole chickens away as though I were a 300 pound body builder so let me just say... Vegan's must love this stuff but as your standard carnivore I found it lacking in... meatiness I guess. I do love me some vegetarian foods, I flip over those morningstar veggie links, and I'm cukoo for tempeh so I thought why not? I gave it a go. I ordered "The Creature" for $3 which is billed as being your "classic frank" and also tried "The Franken" for $5 which is a vegan sun dried tomato and basil sausage on a bun. I covered the creature in ketchup, yellow mustard, sauerkraut, and onions, and on the franken I threw some brown mustard and onions. Despite covering them in the condiments I would have to an all-beef dog or a polish sausage neither of them had that juicy burst of amazing that you get when you first bite into a serious frank. But for what they were they were pretty tasty I guess. I ate both of them. I dug the flavor of the franken more than the the creature. I'd recommend the place to my veggie inclined friends but I probably won't personally be back unless these Food Inc. type movies finally make me give up meat for good. Absolutely awesome! I was never that excited for foodstands, in fact I find them to be annoying and stinky at times. However, Frankenstand is beyond everything else! Simple, fast and very tasty!! Decked out with a Spooky/Silly themed stand, it's always fun to see! The nostalgic hotdog man is even there in his vintage outfit, and curly 'stache ready to serve you up a hot steaming dog! 100% Plant based, so no rotten dead stinky beef/pork/frog/raccoon blend of a meat, just pure vegetable goodness! We went during the Food Truck night every Tuesday on York/Figueroa in the shop's parking lot and got two "Witch" dogs... 30 minutes later we had to nab up another one.. just a little "Creature" for the road! I purchased the "Witch" dog (made with Full Sail Ale) one night after Sunset Junction and all I can say is: I wish the Frankenstand was ALWAYS down the block! It was a well priced and generous sized dog with LOTS of condiments to pile on over at the condiment table. Nom nom NOM! The bread itself was excellent too- soft, fresh, and covered with some sesame seeds for a nice touch. Even the vendors themselves were pretty dapper! If you're lucky enough to run across the Frankenstand somewhere, give them a try... I'm confident that any of their dogs will be good enough to satisfy even the most discriminating omnivore. Funny story - I'm new to LA and had passed a host of food trucks on the way to the DMV. Of course I've read about the food truck scene in Cali and was anxious to check it out, so I stopped by on the way back. After surveying the offerings, I asked the Frankenstand guy how much it was for a dog. He gave me a bemused look and told me it was free - this was a company event. Oh? Did I stumble upon something at which I wasn't supposed to be? Ha! Amused, I thanked him and was about to make my exit but he still offered me a hot dog anyway. All he had left was a vegetarian item, which was fine with me because I'll try anything. And, folks, it was Tas-T! Can't remember what flavor, but it had a nice spice to it.
